VERY cool comparison! I think the timeline gets less in the way of the guitar and is less obvious... probably much easier to play the Timeline than the Ocean machine...
Thanks! Yea I think they are two different things. One is created to be an ultimate delay pedal and the second one to create a very specific sound of Devin Townsend. I guess it just boils down to what you need. :)
Great vid! I own an Ocean Machine and I adore it.
One thing I noticed is if you go into the settings, the reverb and two delays are all set to a low pass filter, which I think explains the claims that the pedal sounds muddy. I set one delay to the high pass instead, dialed the tone back, and set it to digital and it created a nice dotted eighth sound, which I couldn’t do before. I think messing with the filters a bit could make it a bit more comparable to the Strymons clarity
I’ve had an Ocean Machine for two years but never figured out why it sounded that muddy, your method helps me a lot. Thaaaaaanks
to me the lowpass filter is really welcome, I like the old school style reverb.

Both sound lovely. I've had my eyes on the Ocean Machine since it was announced because it's perfect for a particular application I have in mind, so I didn't really need to measure it against any other pedal (I have an H9 max anyway) but it's good to see it stand its ground against such a ferocious contender.

The noise for the lo-bit on the ocean machine is as it should be. No because of the one-spot. Great comparison, I feel like the mix was Abit higher on the ocean machine so it was a bit more intrusive. Otherwise they're both grear

Great video! I love my ocean machine, but occasionally you have to combine it with an EQ pedal or play with the settings on my amp to get a fuller, less digital effect. I'm considering buying some eventide stuff..any opinions on those pedals? Cheers mate!
Thanks! I did enjoy the pedal for a while but ended up trading it for other stuff. Haven't actually played Eventide stuff that much, but I'm happy to recommend the Source Audio Nemesis Delay. I got one couple of months ago and I really like it. Sounds as good as Timeline to me at least and is really easy to operate without a single menu. I have a demo on my channel of it, check it out if your interested and shoot me up with more questions if you have any!
hey man! what kind of adapter did you use for the ocean machine? If I use mine I can only use the reverb of the pedal, If I turn on one of the delays I get a lot of noice out of the amp. Do you know wjats wrong?
By adapter do you mean power supply? For this demo I used 1Spot to power Ocean Machine. Try to make sure your power supply gives enough power to the pedal. The manual says it should have 500mA of power. If it still doesn't work I'm afraid your pedal might be broken and you should probably take it back to the place you bought it from. Hope this helps.
Great video. Instead of talking for an eternity you do practical comparison. Even CZcams sound might not be highend, this method is still the best. I decided for the ocean machine, but use it for synth. esp ambient style patterns. Love it.
pretty awesome. i was trying to decide between the two and making sure i wasn't being biased because I'm such a fan of devin. honestly though i do think i prefered the ocean machine over the strymon. plus i like that its two delays and a reverb and midi. so it'll cut down on my live pedal board.

+Vladimir Halinen I'm sort of all over the place with delays. ambient sounds along with the typical lead delay sounds, on top of just having some delay on all the time for rhythms
Nice comparison! i do prefer the timeline by far, but is really too much expensive, and without the reverb. Can the mooer sync his BPM with incoming midi signal?
Thanks! I haven't tried anything midi related with the Ocean Machine since I don't have any midi controllers or such. So unfortunately I'm not able to answer that question.
no it can’t. users had requested it many times in upcoming firmware but there’s no hope that it will ever be released

Thank you! And yes it does. There's lots of options, dotted eights, triplets etc. Pretty much all the subdivisions you find on other delay pedals as well.
Nice video comparison. Thanks! Frankly, I think it's in the ears. Mine like Strymon and every delay or reverb I hear, while they are really good, (like my Neunaber Immerse), I always want the Strymon as my "go-to" sound. Like picking speakers: my ears just want to hear JBL sounds. One's not better than the others, just better for me.
I completely agree. In the end music is about feelings and self expression. I'm still learning to trust my ears instead of my brain. Sometimes I find myself buying gear that "should" be great instead of buying the thing that really inspires me no matter how unpopular that thing is amongst other guitarists. You bet. My brain tends to get in the way too. I read too many reviews, then I'll buy something and say, "Nah, doesn't sound good!"
I like the Tape and Digital of the Mooer. I think the Analog vs dBucket are comparable. And I like the Lo-Fi (Lo-Bit) of the Strymon. I don't think the Galaxy and Swell are quite the same. I do think the Strymon sounds a little more professional in that comparison. But honestly, I'd rather just control the swell with my volume pedal anyway. So I think I am probably leaning more toward the Ocean Machine at this point. Anyway, thanks for the video!
Can the Mooer ocean do a dotted eighth note U2 sound? Does it’s reverb compare well against the strymon reverb pedals also?

A thing to note is that the stereo implementation of the Ocean Maschine is not really working. More then half the effects do not work in stereo and collapse the signal path to mono, and some of the stereo ones have a very strange stereo image. Its all fine and good if you just use it as a mono pedal, but if someone out there are looking to do some stereo effects this is not the pedal to get.

I'd like to hear the Ocean Machine go toe-to-toe with Strymon's Big Sky.
I almost bought the Big Sky last weekend but then I heard the Ocean Machine on YT. Now I'm very conflicted. They both seem like excellent choices for my purposes (I'm an ambient keyboardist and it would be my first effects pedal) but the OM would save me about $200! I also realize that the BS is made in the USA and Strymon has a great rep for top tier quality and service.
I know next to nothing about Mooer except that they are a Chinese company. If something goes wrong with one of their products, who will fix it? Must it be shipped back to China or is there a stateside facility to handle repairs...?
Big Sky is pretty different from the Ocean Machine. One is a high end reverb and the other is designed to capture different ambient sounds Devin Townsend uses. It really depends on what you need. Sound quality on Big Sky is on another level but so is the price. If it's in any way possible, I would recommend you to try both. That's the only way to be sure which one to get.
I don't know how the warranty issues are dealt in different countries (I'm from Finland), but usually if something breaks, they give you a replacement unit. You can always ask your store about the warranty&repair policy they have. Hop this helps!
@@CatPickStudios Devin designed the pedal, but it's not just to recreate his sound. he likes to sandwich reverb between two delays, so the om is two delays and a reverb that you can arrange in any order you like. plus a looper. the sound quality may not live up to strymon, but you basically get the function of two timelines and a big sky plus ultimate flexibility for less than 300€

I'll get the Ocean Machine tomorow! I am 18 and can't afford the Strymon, but it's good to know, that there's no realy big tonal difference. To me they're both great, sometimes the Ocean Machine sounded a bit better & sometimes the TimeLine. Like the swell mode sounded better on the TimeLine, but the Tape Delay on Ocean Machine sounds much warmer & fuller to me than on the TimeLine.
But I not only will buy the OM because I can't afford the TL, it's also because the OM also got also a Reverb with 9 modes & because of the Looper, where you can put your loop at halfspeed & reverse, where I'm sure I can do some weird-crazy stuff with it. And I always wanted to get a EHX Freeze, but on the OM you can also freeze notes, when you hold down one of the Delay footswitches, doesn't matter if A or B it works on both.
And I guess for 211€ it's a great pedal & a great deal, right?
The Ocean Machine is a great great pedal for the price. For me the most important thing was that it is fun. I found myself losing the track of time by just browsing the presets. Both pedals are great and do different things. If you are into more crazy delay/reverb stuff then the Ocean Machine should serve you well!
Yeah I like to experiment a lot! I am also a big fan of Mogwai, saw them live 2 weeks ago, but I also listen to Ty Segall, Thee oh sees or stuff like that here; awesome guitar on this song, my music sounds similar to them: czcams.com/video/dUegJBEusoI/video.html.
PS: Their lead guitarist of Mogwai got a full* pedaltrain terra 42 , biggest Pedalboard I've ever seen so far. ^^

I think the joy with the Mooer is the fact its 2 delays and a reverb and how they work together. I managed to get one for 140 euro
The Mooer is great and allows you to create bigger soundscapes than with the Timeline. And as you mentioned, it's waaaay cheaper too.
just got my Ocean Machine today. My buddy is a hardcore Strymon guy, but I honestly preferred the sounds of the Ocean machine on almost every setting you showed. I didn't not like the Strymon, but I could not hear enough difference to warrant the difference in price. Great vid!
Thanks! I really like Timeline but the Ocean Machine feels more like a creative tool to me. Both do the basic delay things well, but with added reverb I can create awesome ambient soundscapes with the Ocean Machine.
Vladimir, you nailed it... the Ocean Machine is much more a creative tool as a stand alone unit. I find the Strymon does have some fuller tones, but I'm not sure that's worth the price difference, and it is just a single delay pedal. Thanks for doing this video! -Glenn

Frankie Shayne. Hearing DT demo the OM he proves it has infinite possibilities. It’s us mere mortals that ultimately struggle to get the best out of these pedals. Some on here also forget the Strymon is currently more than twice the price of the OM.

When you activate the Ocean Machine, I notice a drop of volume and your dry signal looses high end and definition
Felt the lofi was a noticeable difference on the time line, not as noisy with an emulated breakup- the mooer sound was more like electrical interference. Swell was smoother...maybe safe to say "creamy" as to the galaxy. But it all goes to what someone's needs are. It doesn't seem like the Oceans machine is a clone but has similar characteristics. One should treat them as different vs. using the mooer as an inexpensive alternative because the mooer is not really inexpensive although moderately priced. A used Stryman can be found for $299 to $350 used.
Yeah I think they do similar things but ultimately they're pretty different both sound wise but especially usability wise as well. Really depends on what you need.
Timeline wins of course.

Perception of "click " is purely subjective as you articulate your attack into the patch. I hear this rubbish about the Zoom CDR 70 as well. "Time does not diminish stupidity"

its youtube sound quality, but to me it sounded like the mooer doesnt keep up with the timelines ad/da conversion quality. to me, the ocean machine lost the original tone of the guitar.
I think it might be a combination of ad/da conversion quality and the fact that Ocean Machine adds modulation on almost every effect. It's not "clean" in that sense. I agree that Timeline sounds more transparent.

Yeah it’s not cheap and you should only buy it if you really need it.
The lack of midi sync is a huge disadvantage of this pedal.
