Skoda has really stepped up over the last few years.
trainman665 that's because they're owned by Volkswagen
Yup. i just bought a 09 skoda octavia stationcar. facelifted model. i were surprised how... overall nice it is. even at 130 km/h it was also very quiet, the seats are fantastic too.
+trainman665 Yes and I guite like Skoda because I'm from Slovakia and Skoda is from the Czech Republic so I'ts a really popular car here. And for my bad english.
Their new octavia (the one in the video is from like 2013) is much more for almost the same money! Also, it just got a facelift. :)
i still wouldnt buy one, still looks wierd..
This almost turned into fake taxi
I wish Skoda was sold in the USA
JTN 1970 its one of those euro only cars hahaha the octavia VRS is a monster and looks awesome
Just buy a Jetta
I can’t ever see a normal Octavia as good as when I first saw it only for the fact that I’ve been looking at the VRS models all of the time and I can’t ever see one of these without the spoiler,DRL headlights and beautiful sports interior
Just buy a Passat
@@Birmingham_racing octavia looks better, the interior too.
in czech republic almost everybody take the skoda. it's always the biggest car in the class
Because the brand is Czech
its a jetta
So weird considering Skoda is a Czech brand.. I also heard japanses brands sell great in Japan, and german cars are huge in Germany.
I have the Seat León, great car, really good quality interior and drives excellently. Same as Golf
I have still got my 2014 Skoda Octavia, more than four years after I bought it from the Skoda showroom. And I still love it.
you can't love a SKODA
Mihael koštrun you cant love your face
@@ponjebach yes he can?
@@kakobpakob9558 That face can't get rid off pretty girls. I hope you have the same problem.
@@ponjebach maybe a bit late to reply 8 months after?
It does't matter, they are on the same platform, Skoda is a bit more spacious, they share engines, gearbox and everything so I vote for Skoda. That's why Octavia will always be better selling model than a Golf, there is just no reason to go for a Golf unless you are a badge snob which I suppose you aren't.
Sadžid Smajkić But Skodas get all the parts with worse tolerances and quality.
VW gets the best parts, then Seat, and Skoda gets the rest.
If you think there is no difference in part quality ask an engineer.
Having owned Seat, Skoda, VW and Audis in recent years, I think it's Audi, VW, Skoda then Seat in terms of quality. Seat tend to be the more interesting in design, but they feel much cheaper build than than all the others. We had an Octavia and Leon of the same vintage and roughly same spec and the Leon build quality and quality of materials was much worse. (2000 Audi A3, 2002 VW Golf, 2005 Skoda Octavia, 2006 Seat Leon, 2007 Audi TT, 2009 Audi A3 Sportback, 2011 Skoda Fabia, 2013 Skoda Octavia)
Anyway, aren't all low-capacity petrol VW engines built in the Skoda factory these days?
It's so hard to believe that company like VW has bad quality control on their parts. Whether they're made in their facilities in Germany or in Czech Republic it doesn't really matter, parts need to be made to strict tolerances to meet the specifications. I am an engineer too, so I know how production works. They can probably use lower quality materials inside the cabin, but the biggest savings are made due to cheaper labour in other countries. Sorry for my English. Cheers
I agree. They clearly use cheaper materials for each brand in the cabin, but the mechanical parts are the same for all of them. Otherwise the other brands would have a rotten reputation for reliability (which none of them do) If you stripped a Leon, Octavia, Golf and A3 with the same engine down to bare metal then other than the slight differences in wheelbase they would be the same car.
It wouldn't make sense to use poor quality parts in the other brands. Everyone knows that they are the same manufacturer so if one was crap then it would damage the whole VW brand. The difference in cost (other than the cheaper cabin materials) is mainly due to the prestige of the badge.
I genuinely find that the Seat and especially the Skoda cars are faster in urban areas. For a while I was driving both an Audi TT and a Skoda Octavia and the Skoda was always let out of junctions more often than the TT.
nothing wrong at all with your english matey!
Only Octavia i'm interested in is the VRS.
NorthSea0il yeah boyyy!
Bought 2023 Skoda Octavia. They really have come a long way and love driving it. Attention to detail is top notch 🎉
My dad got a 2.0 diesel elegance, brand new in 2013 lovely car. Now onto a 66 plate VRS, they really have stepped up there game in recent years
I always lamented the absence of the Skoda & Seat brands over on this side of the pond. Cheap and cheerful. Lots of vehicles in the US have too many doo-dads. Basic transportation is still a decent chunk of the needs market, here. It why I have a new truck with manual windows and locks; needs vs. wants.
Suddenly you realise that every new car is the same.
It looks good, I love the grill.
Skoda is a great car
i thought you guys had the jetta over there cause it would have been a better comparison than the golf since the skoda is based on the jetta which is a longer golf
Funny. The only Skoda taxis we had here were superbs.
I'd get the Octavia, use the 2k on a mountain bike that I can bring to trails using the Octavia.
Easiest decision in the world. I own a Skoda Octavia 2.0 FSi (2006 model), and it's a great car to drive.
The £2k will surely be equalled out with depreciation, after 3 years/60,000 miles on the 2nd hand market the Golf will be worth atleast £2,500 more than the Octavia, So it sort of equals it self out.
Especially if you intend to part exchange it in, main dealers will only offer rock bottom trade prices for the Skoda, whereas you'll have much more bargaining power trading in a Golf.
Nah. That's what you want to believe.
Českooo!
Chechnya.
+Philip Cooper not even close
Only thing Czech about it is the badge
is it always raining in the uk?
I had an Octavia vrs estate with the dsg box. I sold it after 6 months because it was too good. Flaws are character. That car had none. Bought a Mini Cooper s to replace it.
2:31 - Oh my God, what are you guys talking about when comparing it to the Golf? The wheelbase is 66mm longer than the Golf while the actual car is 412mm longer. Where did you get those 50mm from?
should compare it to a passat
@@hardcorehardo Passat is in Skoda language Superb.
As well it come in estate(combi) version.Octavia it's just VW GOLF platform.
@@hardcorehardo Skoda makes Fabia as a hatchback, and Octavia as a sedan, so it may seem on the first look that Fabia is more comparable to Gold and Octavia to Passat, but in reality Skoda is a smaller class car, Octavia is in the same class as Golf and Superb is in the same class with Passat.
@@KafanskaTV Yeah VW arent stupid. The Skoda range slots into gaps in the VW range.
Lol, octavia is built on golf skelet.
Bestseller in Poland.
Must say than Skoda's aren't exactly fun to drive, but they're so practical, even their smaller model (Citigo) got a nice cabin and boots space for it's sides, very good fuel engine consume, and with good features
Just sad the show got cancelled again....Smith needed a shave also.
jody024 always a great show and proper motoring show rather than geezer entertainment
This is the old model. Could Fifth Gear not make a review on the facelifted version and upload it?
I like to think of it as Skoda's Golf Sedan.
one thing i don't really get is, the budge thing. i mean, who drives a vw and people turn their heads and say wow? buy a mercedes if that's what you're after. vw is a cheap budge ,anyway. having that said, i already got myself an octavia. not a thrilling car,but there's so much room in it,including the boot, drives fine, reliable and cheap to obtain and maintain.what's there to moan about?
this is an old one....
i think the styling is quite nice, better than the golf
2019?
2013?
Interesting that it's cheaper than the golf in the UK but here in Finland the Octavia is 1000€ more than a golf
Yes, that is their pricing strategy - in CZ/SK Skoda costs more than VW as well, however, it is vice versa in most of Europe.
Make terrific second hand buys
Really hate to break it but thats the old Octavia, the new one has four headlights...
It's the same car with a facelift.
only ever see them as taxis, hardly ever see them as normal cars lol
They're taxis because they are cheap, reliable and massive. Nowadays the Rapid seems to be the most common new taxi, but it's not as a good to drive.
Favourite car for taxi in barcelona
I thought the same and got the 150hp tsi octavia...the 2000 I saved I spent it in boats and hookers xD
Boats and hoes, boats and hoes......(Stepbrothers, great WIll Ferrel flick)
Literally upset you ripped top gear this hard.
If this exact car existed in the us, u would buy it.
Or the Leon 👍
It's like you're getting less of a car for your 2k with the Golf as it is a hatchback...
and skoda allready released facelift for that "new" model
Why did you compare it to golf and not the Jetta? It is like comparing apples and oranges :)
Damir Kvajo Because the Jetta is on an older platform and is more basic than the MQB based cars.
ApurtureSci thought jetta was just a golf with a tail, and that they made each generation of golf in jetta version. anyway, still dint get hiw can they compare hatchback and sedane...
Damir Kvajo Technically both are hatchback, look at where the boot hinges on the Octavia.
The Jetta isn't a hatchback, the hinge is at the bottom of the window level. The Octavia hinge is at roof level. Hatchbacks open to give full access to the whole rear of the passenger space, including the rear window. Jetta doesn't do that.
I'm glad vw only sells Audi and Lamborghini here in SA.........oh and Bentley too
I have a golf gtd and I love it!
that's stupid
£2k cash in your hand isn't quite how it works though is it. 99% of people that buy these sort of cars will be doing so with pcp deals and the difference between £16k and £18k on a pcp is next to nothing that would make a difference. Golf would also have better residuals making it even less of a difference.
contract hire is a fair bit cheaper than the Golf. Bigger boot, quicker & just as economical (in 1.4TSI form). Think it's gonna be my next car.
It’s also a bigger car more bang for money
when comparing this car at skoda marketing , they where thinking of Chinese cars i guess ? :D :D
It is compared to other Octavias.
It says that no Octavia has appeared as good in those ways as this one.
The Golf Mk3 are the best VW Golf.
This episodes very old. Even the model in India is newer!!😂😂
Škoda should say thanks to VolksWagen and Germans.
For starting the war which resulted in soviet occupation and Skoda going from competitive car to a joke?
@@neplatnyudaj110 no you can thank France for all that..
Golf. I want the Golf.
This review is two years old.
Julian Webb nothing get past Julian Webb
Rolling coal Škoda
combi version looks 1000% better
Is this just a rebadged jetta?
In a lot of ways, yes, but the Jetta is a saloon and the Octavia is a hatchback.
Trevor c340 No.
Jetta is smaller it's more of a Passat
@@Birmingham_racing Passat is bigger. It slots between them.
No
A golf is hardly a prestige brand.
renault grande coupe is better ❤

his beard is so awful
Szy mon makes me want to punch him in the face
Only reason why you'd have any VW is because you're a badge snob and don't want a Skoda or a Seat or because you can't afford a Porsche, Mercedes, Audi or BMW

Jack Mayall i guess so
Fifth Gear is Crap! And it is boring!
Jan Šimek don't watch it then
Skoda s are rubbish
Skoda are the same as vw same engines same everything but the badge.
Some else who knows nothing about Skoda's!!!!!!!!!
Can’t someone have a personal opinion about a brand?
By the way that was for the skodas back then and i don’t mind their current cars.
