No one is doing Bread. Really enjoyed that you enjoyed it. Gates's silky smooth voice that could go really high was good enough that he could've been JUST a singer, but he essentially WAS Bread, writing some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. You really listen. But it's not just about big families! A lot of Gates's music WAS about big families, but listen to "Everything I Own" for one of the most beautiful tribute songs EVER. I cry my eyes out every time I hear that, and most people (except the smart commenters here!) don't know who Gates is addressing. Same pattern with Gates in that one: Starts simple with guitar, then the strings come in and I lose it. Really enjoy how you enjoy! :)

Hi. I love Bread. My big sister used to have a The Sound of Bread compilation album when I was a kid in the mid 70s. The Bread melodies stuck in my head as I got older but I mostly got into my own music. During the grunge period in the early 90s I remember walking into a local second hand record shop and I saw a Best of Bread CD. Bread were so unhip and really uncool, but just looking at the song names brought me back to my childhood and hearing those melodies in my head, but I was actually embarrassed to buy it because Bread were so unfashionable, but I splashed the cash and bought it. When I got home and played it, oh goodness, song after song of songwriting heaven. Instantly taken back to my childhood on such beautiful melodies and songs.
I have since grown to love Bread and love their unfashionablity. Bread is a treasure trove of beautiful songwriting and their albums are well worth checking out if you can. Any album from 1969 to 78 is perfect - and I don't say that flippantly. My favourite Bread album is On The Waters (1970), it's just sublime music.
Anyway, I'm getting carried away here.
Thanks for giving this a listen Chod. Much appreciated.

I was 13 when this came out. Haven't really heard Bread in decades, and Never listened to them with headphones. It was an unsophisticated record player or AM radio. But your reaction made me really Listen to the music as if for the first time. I have a whole new appreciation now, Thank You!

The album Best of Bread was in everyone's collection in the early 70's. Side One of that album (yeah, back when albums had sides) was played over and over and over in my household. The smooth grooves of this song is so amazing.

"Mother Freedom" if you want a more upbeat song from them and somewhat different from their other songs. A real banger, for them at least.

Dude David Gates knew how to write lyrics that were real. “ I would do anything” “if” “guitar man” baby ima want you” gotta do em!

Bread has about seven songs that are absolutely fantastic and you just heard one of them. "Baby makin' music"?; sounds about right. You MUST hear the following (and I'm sure lots of people will say the same}: Baby I'm A-Want You, If, Everything I Own, Guitar Man, It Don't Matter To Me, Aubrey, Diary, Sweet Surrender, Mother Freedom & Lost Without Your Love.

Ha, ha. You've only scratched the surface of Bread. Yes, "If" is a required listening to song of theirs. 😉
    Keep up the good work.
