What it’s like sleeping in a Volkswagen California 2023

- Every year myself and my family look forward to a weekend away in the Volkswagen California campervan. We know this van hasn’t got a toilet and can be quite small feeling for four people and yet we seem to manage to get through every camping experience.
This year we stayed at an Aire campsite Which is quite a different experience because it doesn’t have a campers kitchen or anyone in attendance, but they are often very close to the water and we love that.

Love the VW California, trouble is they are pricey. The Transporter conversions are much cheaper.. Glad you're having some quality fun time Bob. I hope all goes well with your operation.
Yeah and the spec on California is pretty basic, no Lithium, no solar panel, no toilet or room for it.. a professional conversion can be a lot better than a factory built California

I wish my ‘84 Vanagon was as well sorted as the California is. Love those shades and engine. The table is head and shoulders better. This heater doesn’t need the engine warm like mine does.

The front closet actually has enough storage space for a Porta Potti: you just need to raise the shelf to the highest level and it fits perfectly. Just slide it out of the closet prior to unfolding the downstairs bed, and it will stand between the bed and the driver’s seat… No more going out under the rain or in the cold in the middle of the night!
Love that little buggy but can’t be too stable on the road hitched up to something as big as that.
You should be able to use a porta potty with the bed in place. I can in my similar size campervan.
Hi Bob. Great video. But I'd prefer the caravan, drop in on the site and have the car to do a bit of touring. I know the California is a cool camper but bit pricey and the no toilet would just put me off..

I've owned various campers & motorhomes and travelled all over Europe for the last 50 years. The prices have just got so ludicrous they are simply not attainable for the Common Man.
