  • W.B. Yeats love affair with Co. Sligo began back in his childhood. He spent his summer holidays in Sligo listening to his grandmother's stories of ancient Ireland, myths and legends. Absorbing the folklore of the county and meeting with the local people there. He would later refer to Co. Sligo as the Land of Hearts Desire. Yeats always maintained that Sligo was the domain and landscape of his poetic imagination. Yeats was awarded the Noble Prize in literature in November 1923 and was considered to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. He was the first Irish person to receive the Noble Prize. William Butler Yeats died in France in 1939 and later buried in Drumcliff churchyard Co. Sligo under bare Benbulben's head. His epitaph reads , Cast a cold eye on life, on death, horseman pass by.
