      Nah it felt pretty liberally sided tbh. Not that that's a bad thing, but an easy counter for opposition would be "but the drugs and the crime they're brining in! It's ruining our country" or something along those lines. Of course it would be awesome of people wanted to do well, because they were moving into the U.S., and got the chance to, but Job security has been relevant (even more so now) as a voter issue, and the easy target is immigrants. It was a very innocently simple/wholesome take, but I'm glad that he at least has some ideas about how to work it all out politically. Its an awesome start.

    This Vox video is a shitty/biased video honestly, it way oversimplifies the parties into just being either racist parties or not racist parties. It creates a false dichotomy between southern and northern states that is much more nuanced. The red and blue map of today has really only been around since 2000. Bill Clinton for example won many southern states just in the 90's. Ronald Reagan in the 80's won almost every state, including northern states. Northern and Southern voters are not two different and separate blocs like the video tries to portray. In the 20's and 30's, the presidential elections went from Hoover, a republican winning almost every state, north and south, to Roosevelt, a democrat, winning almost every state, north and south. The video skips over the 50 years between the end of the Civil War to the beginning of FDR by chalking it up to "big business Republicans".
    The explanation of "Black voters switched over to their new advocates, the Democrats" in 1964 because of the Civil Rights act is so misleading as well. The house vote for the civil rights act was 153 Democrats and 136 Republicans for it, with 91 Democrats and 35 Republicans for it. It was nothing like a party line vote, with many Democrats not supporting it at all. The narrator says Goldwater was against the Civil Rights act because it gave the government too much power, which is true. Goldwater repeatedly said he was against racial segregation and supported the Supreme Court case in Brown vs Board of Education. His opposition to the act was just because the act violated the federalism of the US government, he said racial issues are best dealt with by the people directly involved, not the national government. People should be careful before claiming Goldwater to be any sort of racist, which he was far from, you can't fault the guy for sticking to his almost libertarian principles of a limited central government. The important takeaway from Goldwater is that he turned the Republican party into the small government party, resembling the party of today, and paving the way for Reagan's landslides.
    I also don't like how the video skips from Goldwater to a few seconds on Reagan to then skipping all the way to 2012 as if the only changed until then was Hispanic immigration.
    My point is that this is a really bad way of looking at history, to go in with a narrative, a narrative that whoever gets votes from the South are evil racists, and the video is obviously meant to try and falsely label one party racist. Parties are not defined by what minorities support and don't support them, there is so much more nuance than that. Look at an electoral map of the elections leading up to 2020. You will see that while it is true that many states are divided by geography, and geographical region can and has gone for any candidate. It is a modern trend in the last 10-20 years to have such a consistently divided vote especially in presidential elections, as urban voters have increasingly isolated themselves from rural and suburban voters, rather than all just being individual Americans, voters are divided into demographic groups.

    The party shift is far more complex than this video would have you believe. The most important race was likely the 1912 election. You had a major split with Teddy Roosevelt’s progressive Republicans, who favored corporate regulation, and Taft’s Republicans who were more establishmentarian and economically elite.
    After Teddy’s Bull-Moose Party (a third party) took more votes than the Republican Party, both parties were forced to adapt as a means of limiting the splintering. Democrats slowly began in incorporate the left economically with FDR, and into the 60s they pretty much secured the northern vote by banning segregation. Republicans responded to this splintering by attracting the white blue-collar workers through promoting social conservative wing of the economically liberal bull-moose party and through ideas of “state’s rights.”
    Between the 1940’s and until the 1960s both parties were fairly economically left-leaning in their values of building infrastructure, and socially the divide was far more between the North and South than it was between Democrat and Republican, but people mostly voted on foreign policy, as tensions were so great against the USSR.
    Democrats Kennedy and Johnson both brought domestic policy into the discussion, and while the Civil Rights act was a Democratic move, Liberal Republicans, like Eisenhower and Nixon, were apprehensive of speaking out in favor of segregation. This apprehension was sensed by a large faction of Republicans in the Deep South, who voted for a third party. At this time, there were also Republicans who feared that their party was going down a wrong path, and many of them switched to the Democratic Party; and the same thing goes for the Democrats.
    Ronald Reagan really came to define the Republican Party base in the modern era. He combined unabashedly Conservative Social policy and trickle-down economics, which was able to consolidate a new Republican Party.
    In the 90’s, The third party member, Ross Perot, won a great deal of votes in the 1992 election, and that started a new movement which was more populist in its anti-globalization message, was more anti-taxation, radically anti-immigration, but was also more liberal in regards to LGBT rights, universal healthcare, free-trade, and foreign policy. This movement would indirectly inspire the rise of populism on both sides of the spectrum, as new issues would be discussed. Trump would take the anti-tax message, anti-globalization, and radically anti-immigration factors of that movement while Bernie’s movement would take Universal Healthcare, LGBT rights, and foreign policy. Both Bernie and Trump oppose purely free-trade. Currently the biggest divide in the Republican Party are their appeals to the Midwest working class, as Trump represents a more populist leader who speaks to their fears of things like free trade and government corruption. They may have some irrational conspiracy-level fears, but other fears they have are completely rational, given the disconnect between the elite and the masses.

    • @DarjeelingEnjoyer
      @DarjeelingEnjoyer Před 3 lety

      @@livelyosprey Explaining something without bias is easy. You tell the person exactly what happened without putting your opinion on the incident. If a shooting happens, you say exactly what happened and that isn't bias.
      Example: man is shot by police for charging them with a knife in his mother's backyard. An unbiased news report would be "An officer-involved shooting occurred at [Place] just a few hours ago when the man reportedly charged at officers with a large knife. Officers fired multiple times and he was taken to the hospital in critical condition." That is all facts and no opinions.
      Now here's a real-life example of this happening: czcams.com/video/AnS-1VBLuBg/video.html&ab_channel=ABCNews
      ABC News said an UNARMED black man was shot 20 times in the back by a police officer in his own grandmother's backyard. When in reality, he was shot 7 times while charging the officers with what appeared to be a gun. He was wanted by police prior to the shooting for assault on someone else. He wasn't shot in the back either, he was shot primarily in his shoulder. That is false reporting and bias, meant to sway the opinions of the viewer into agreeing with the family members.
      If ABC said it without bias, it would be this: "A black man was shot 7 times after charging at officers while holding a cell phone. It's reported that the man was pointing it at officers in the dark after he ran from police. Officers told him to stop multiple times but were forced to fire after they saw him charged them while in a shooting stance." That is unbiased reporting which only states facts.
      The most unbiased report of this incident was from a CZcamsr and not a news source. czcams.com/video/_IN-YmosRME/video.html&ab_channel=DonutOperator - And only facts about the incident are stated here.
      Sure, everything has a SLIGHT bias, but it is very easy to contain it by only stating facts about an incident.

      @livelyosprey Před 3 lety +3

      @@DarjeelingEnjoyer I you want to be pedantic. My point is that facts aren't biased but you will always have a conclusion with only a chunk of the facts which forms the bias.
