Years ago in LA, where I grew up, there were Intimate Jazz haunts & piano bars all over the greater LA basin playing the Great American Songbook Standards, as we're hearing here, "That Sunday That Summer" Nat Cole recorded May 16, 1963, at Capitol Records 1750 N Vine St, Studio A with Ralph Carmichael conducting the Orchestra with His arrangement & with 'Britain's Cliff Adams Singers & By Golly in My Grandparents' & Dad's old LA, Hollywood neighborhood

This excellent rendition carries on the legacy and the beauty of a timeless song. Who ever fell forever in love on a Sunday, is indeed blessed!
Thank you for this, one and all...

I've been listening to this rendition for years and just recently found out Mr. Whalum passed last year. Rest in paradise and thank you for the beautiful music.

Beautiful, intimate and brilliant vocal rendition...good melody liberties. Dramatic and so
melancholy. Thanks for posting...another good music lesson for me!

Mr. Whalum does not imitate Nat "King" Cole...one reviewer suggested that Cole's phrasing was as much a part of Whalum's as visa versa. Peanuts toured with Cole first as his trumpet player and later on tenor sax. Whenever Cole would perform he'd tell the audience he wanted his friend Peanuts on stage with him and would call him down from the bandstand...perhaps taking his phrasing from Peanuts' horn.

The best version of this song is Bobby Scott's version, from his hard to find CD called Bobby Scott and his Trio, For Sentimental Reasons. It's better than Nat Cole's version too. Doubt me, I'd be glad to email you the MP-3. It's marvelous, and swings. I can play it ten times in a row. This is nice, though. Bobby's album is on amazon in MP-3. Any aspiring signers should hear that album. Bobby was a great composer, too.

Nat sings it for 1963 - perfect. This is good, Bobby Scott is good, Nat is just right. For jazz piano version it's hard to beat Wayne Kelso - magical.
