  • In this video Sammy Davis, Jr. imitates Nat King Cole as he yucks it up with the smoothing singing legend, and Nat King Cole really gets a kick out of Sammy's over the top impersonation of his singing style. Sammy Davis, Jr. had an amazing knack for impersonation and often incorporated that into his act.
Sammy Davis, Jr. was one of the finest tap dancer ever, as well as being one of hell of an all round entertainer. Starting on the boards of vaudeville as a child, Sammy grew up to become a dancer, singer, musician, actor and fine comedian. Arthur Silber, Jr. and Sammy Davis, Jr., starting in 1950, were best friends and business partners for over 25 years.
Their association involved shared success and shared failure, shared pain and shared joy, for when they started together Sammy was a relatively unknown player with the Will Maston Trio and then he became a international superstar in all facets of show business.
When Sammy broke the color barriers in New York and Las Vegas, with Frank Sinatra's help, Arthur was with him; when Sammy got in his major car accident Arthur was the first one at the hospital, when Sammy met with famed star Eddie Cantor to talk about coming on his show against the wishes of others because of racism, Arthur was with him as Eddie Cantor defied the powers that be.
Arthur Silber and Sammy Davis were best friends and business partners for over 25 years and this book tells stories about Sammy never before revealed and sets the record straight on other stories that have become accepted as real from repeated telling.
For more about Arthur Silber, Jr. go to www.sammysbook.com
About Sammy Davis, Jr: Me and My Shadow by Arthur Silber, Jr.
Read the definitive biography about one of the greatest entertainers in history and all the great celebrities he met and mingled with along the way. For over 23 years, beginning in 1949, Arthur Silber Jr. and Sammy Davis Jr. were practically inseparable. They were not only business partners but the closest of friends. As Sammy began to carve out his niche as a solo star, they celebrated the triumphs, suffered the insults and braved the dangers in a world about to go through dramatic changes.
From Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack to Kim Novak and Eddie Cantor, throughout the pages of this book you will read stories never told, see pictures never seen by the public, and get the real story from one who lived it with Sammy Davis Jr. New York, Las Vegas, London and all places in between are visited as Sammy and Arthur make a journey of personal and professional discovery in the midst of fun, great and scary times as millions come to fully appreciate the absolutely mind blowing talent of a man now popularly recognized by just one word, Sammy.
    About Arthur Silber, Jr:
My first big professional break came when I was twenty and Sammy Davis Jr. hired me as his personal assistant and lighting director, a position I remained in for over twenty-two years. It would be impossible to measure everything I learned from Sammy about show business.
He was the consummate professional, a genius at his craft. During that time we became business partners and formed Samart Enterprises, which I still own to this day.
Some of the highlights of my years with Sammy were when I staged and produced his portions of three Royal Command Performances.
The first was for Queen Elizabeth in London 1960. Then, in 1961 I staged and produced Sammy's portion of Princess Grace Rainier Red Cross Gala in Monaco for their Royal Family, and finally, a performance for England's Queen Mother. Over the years I produced and co-produced many of Sammy's shows including Englandís Best TV Show of the year, 1961, Sammy Meets The British, and the following year Sammy Meets Girls. For eleven years I was company manager, production manager and lighting director for the Lettermen during the height of their popularity.
Since leaving the Lettermen twenty-two years ago I have been company manager, production manager and lighting designer and director for Vikki Carr. A few of the highlights of my years with Vikki have been as production design and lighting director of an NBC special, A Very Special Evening With Vikki Carr (that won the IRIS Award in 1979), the UNICEF All Children Show in Vienna, Austria and last, but certainly not least, production design of her shows for Presidents Jerry Ford, Jimmy Carter and a special show for President Reagan.

That's incredible. Nat King Cole's voice was so rich, I didn't think any one could imitate it. Sammy Davis Jr was an awesome talent. How ever, it was hilarious to see my favorite male singer turn the tables on Sammy and imitate his voice.

+larry potter I don't think he was trying to imitate Sammy's voice - more like make fun of Sammy's impression of him. I may be wrong but that's what I got from it. :-)

Craig Haylett, +larry potter - Craig Haylett that's how I ,too, "heard" it, which made it that much more fun, wonderful and magical. That clip, made what occurred between them look effortless, fun and easy, but it belies the the years of hard work and dedication, that each man put into developing and honing his respective craft. These two artists could "talk" to each other, in the language of their art, only as they could. The respect had to be mutual, because they had that inner knowledge, of what each had to endure, of what it took for both of them to[ eventually] be "there" and share that moment in time. Maybe it might be likened to two Marines of different periods, sharing a knowing look, when they speak of(going through) Parris Island. The rest of us can't relate.

They were both heavy smokers, which contributed to that richness, and I think made it easier for Sammy to do the impersonation, although he had a knack for doing them.

I heard it as Lary heard it, which was NAT turning the tables and imitating Sammy’s voice, which to me still had the same magical effect you described. Everyone knows Sammy can imitate anybody, but I need not think they were ready for NAT to do Sammy. I I know I wasn’t… lol

Notice that Nat Cole is jokingly impersonating himself after Sammy's rendition...
And notice how they both were scratching under their chins. This was a known Nat Cole mannerism. Very funny stuff.

Only Nat King Cole could do this. His talent and charm was on another level. And his voice was actually his 2nd instruments. He also pioneered the Piano, Jazz guitar, and Bass trio combination. No one had done it before and no one could do it as well as him either since.

How gracious of Nat, I have to say though, Sammy Davis jr has yet to be equalled as an entertainer, many have been good dancers and singers but he was an 'above-average dancer', actor and singer AND he could do spot-on impersonations and he was funny as hell, no one equalled him then or since and this is coming from a die-hard Sinatra fan, Sinatra could sing and dance and will always have my heart but Sammy was the ultimate all-rounder! He had enviable talent, that a higher power put so much in a single living soul is deeply unfair, really!

One of the highlights of my career. If I was stranded on a desert island and could only have one wish, and I couldn’t have my wife with me, then it would have to be my Nat King Cole record collection and something to play it on. Nat King Cole....I became a serious fan when I was about 14 years old. Stay As Sweet As You Are...I thought that song was the bomb....I was into disco, funk, rock, reggae, calypso, even liked country tunes but Nat, who died in 1965 even before I was born was the man.
Also loved Sammy Davis Jnr. ....one of the most versatile, talented entertainers ever.
As if being a great dancer and fantastic singer wasn't enough he could play the vibraphone, the piano and was a bad ass jazz drummer as well.

That was freaking awesome. Two of the very best that every lived. I dare say the best overall entertainer in Sammy Davis, Jr. and the best vocalist outside of opera in Nat King Cole. Sure, there are others you could argue for, but I've got these two at the top.

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by best vocalist outside opera. Does this mean that opera singers are just better than other genres.
I don't think there is such a thing as best, it's a matter of taste, but if you want to talk about technical abilty(outside of opera if you like) Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald were untouchable, Ella's command of time, pitch and fluidity and Sarah's phenomenal vocal quality, range, ear and control the equal of anyone that ever sang.
Nat was fabulous as he had a wonderful quality to his voice but was in no way a superior singer to the two ladies I mentioned.

Absolutely. And there is very little of that to be found, unfortunately. It's very hard to make a living without singing. I'm thinking of Chet Atkins as just about the only acoustic guitar player who didn't sing, but that's bc he wasn't black, and was much better than anyone else at the time, and maybe still is. They also cancelled the show, even though it was the most viewed show on TV at the time and the quality was unmatched.
