As everyone is saying, the machine gun failed, but they threw a grenade and the shrapnel injured Heydrich and he died later in a hospital due to the injuries. They were pursued and hid in a church where they tried to resist the nazi soldiers to their last bullets. To this day there are still bullet holes on the church since the nazis shot a machine gun from a window from a building across the street, I've been to the church. I believe they then commited suicide by poisoning themselves with cyanide so the nazis couldn't get information out of them. I respect the heroic acts of the resistance movements in the nazi occupied countries. They all did this for a better future for everyone, even though they knew they were risking their own lives every single day. Their sacrifices were not in vain. I salute them with utmost respect

Actually, the shrapnel from the grenade penetrated the seat of Heydrichs Mercedes upholstery, that was filled with horse hair. It was that hair that infected Heydrich's evil body, and ultimately killed him.

    Correction:
    1. Kubis' STEN was jammed, so they threw a grenade and that wounded Heydrich, not the SMG
    2. Karel Curda, a collaborator gave the location of Kubis and Gabcik to the Gestapo. They hid in the st. cyril and methodius cathedral in Prague. The SS raid at the cathedral, and after a gunfight, Kubis and Gabcik commited suicide

Heydrich was attacked with a sten gun, from the front, which jammed. Heydrich stood up from the backseat, to shoot the man in front, with his officer's pistol. Heydrich was never hit by gun.
The other agent was back up, and came from behind Heydrich, with a grenade, which actually did not land in the rear seat, but blew up on the outside of the rear door, next to Heydrich. Heydrich was hit by bits of car and grenade.
Heydrich had had a policy that all Nazi VIPs had to ride in bullet proof heavy vehicles, with escorts.
But Heydrich drove in an open, unarmoured car, without escort, as he wanted all Czechs to know he had no fear of them.
That was the clear way to attack and it was set up on a hairpin turn, where car had to slow to near walking pace. When the 2 agents ran, they initially thought the attack was unsuccessful
Only in the days following with certain announcements, did they know he was injured.
Heydrich had refused to allow Czech doctors to treat him, they had to find a German medical professor to treat him. Heydrich refused to answer any questions of the anaesthetist. His arrogance unbelievable.
Himmler sent his personal doctor to oversee Heydrich's treatment and he approved all that had been done. Heydrich's wife, Lina, visited. Heydrich was cool, thinking clearly and approving appalling revenge attacks. He appeared to be repairing well, but days later, he suddenly got a high temperature, and sank into a coma, and swiftly died.
The Lidice revenge massacre was based on the maddest coincidences.
At the time, nobody German had a clue who attacked or where they were hiding.
A young man was wanting to dump his current girlfriend, so he sent a letter to her at her work, in a factory, IMPLYING he had to go into hiding because of a major act against the Germans. So she would be impressed and wouldn't give him a hard time.
She was off work, sick, and her overseer opened the letter and gave it to the local Germans. They arrested her and interrogated her, and demanded to know everything she knew.
One of the random things she knew, was that 2 young Czech men had left Lidice to go to England to fight for the Allies. They knew that 2 men had attacked Heydrich, so they had the names of 2 Czech lads from Lidice, and believed they had been sent back to assassinate Heydrich.
In fact, those 2 Czech lads had joined the RAF, and were flying RAF planes, I think fighters, in England, with no idea what was happening.
The chap that took over from Heydrich, (name forgotten), was instructed to slaughter EVERY man in Lidice and all the women and children shipped off to Ravensbruck, and Chelmno extermination camp, from Lidice, and Hitler wanted Lidice to be totally eradicated. No building remains existing. No roads. All old maps showing Lidice were to be handed in and destroyed, new maps were made totally wiping out anything that showed anything to indicate Lidice.
Even the cemetery was flattened, the skeletons dug up and trashed and dumped elsewhere.
Some very young blonde children and babies looking German were sent from Lidice to Germany, to be raised by childless Germans. Those children not knowing their real stories.
When the 2 assassins were betrayed, other men were unfortunately hidden with them. All knew they would be tortured terribly, before being killed, so all of them decided not to surrender. At one point, the crypt where a number were refusing to surrender was filled with water, from fire trucks, to try to get the men out alive, for torture and public execution.
Earlier, when the revenge killings began, the 2 assassins of Heydrich were appalled at the number of Czechs being killed, and suggested they put signs around their necks, saying they were the assassins, and walk out on the streets, in the hope of stopping innocent deaths, but were told not to. They were honourable, lovely young men.
Hitler had the total destruction of Lidice filmed and it was shown in other occupied countries to show what would happen if any other Resistance tried the same thing.
In reaction, knowing what had happened, many different countries named streets, suburbs after Lidice. Daughters were named Lidice, and a very moving link was forged by a town of miners in UK, with the town of Lidice, which had had a mining population.
Sir Barnett Stross a labour politician of Stoke on Trent, with links with the miners of North Staffordshire met, and those miners agreed to donate 1 day's pay per week, to a fund to rebuild Lidice. At the time, they had no idea how long the war would last OR if England would win, from September 1942!
Lidice was rebuilt, postwar, 300 metres from the original Lidice, reached through a rose garden, from the new village, the original area remains a memorial of the war crime, today.

That's right. Turns out, the leather seats were stuffed with horsehair which contained spores believed to have caused the sepsis which killed Heydrich. They say it could also been from the horses hair, that formed the cushioning of the seats in the rolls royce, that were shattered and imbedded into his wounds also. He came to, was coherent, eating etc, but the blood infection set it badly. Six days later, it took his life. Hitler expressed his disapproval of any of his high ranking nazi heiracy being chauffered or travelling in and open vehicle. Reinhardt assumed no one dared to take him out, as he ran chez with such ferociousness that people were too fearful of the reprisals. Goes to show that people will risk everything to rise up against pure evil.

According to the legend, anyone who places this ancient crown upon their head and isn’t worthy to rule over Czech people shall die within a year. Some people who were there when Heydrich was brought before these jewels said that he allegedly put the crown briefly on his head.
He supposedly did this almost exactly a year before his assassination.
There are no proofs of it actually happening, however it is a cool fun facf.

Lemme see if I got this right: they kill Heydrich to stop the murder of Czech civilians but the Nazis kill thousands of civilians as pay-back for Heydrich’s killing. Seems like the law of Un-intended consequences came into play here.

Everybody is being played from the two polish assassins to the German leader. This will keep repeating itself unless we halt the Tower of Babel/Khufu Matrix which runs a two-prong system of controlling the warriors' spirit in a four-quadrant control system of ascendancy/descendancy series of wars and then controlling the flow of goods and services from this point. The world wars were a descending Last Hurrah of the Sacred Masculine Non-Semite to the ascendancy three-of-four major series of ascendancy wars with the Sacred Feminine Semite. Our quadrant has produced a Broadbased Judeo-Christian Freedom Governing Document that prohibits this manipulation and that can replace this Tower/Matrix. I'm for the Allies and the Polish people because of the Democracy Index guage on this series of wars. The Allies were much higher. However, everyone has their head stuck in the Ongoing Life Abreviation to Life Abreviation instead of my new Ongoing Systematic Appraisal to Systematic Appraisal. Emotions run high, and I'm a bit hypocritical here. They probably are saying this for the Polish military upgrade in the current antics of the Sacred Feminine Non-Semite with the Russian portion in this quadrant as another form of authoritarianism. Sure, sacrifice some more Polish people instead of my American self. Let's take a look at the big picture and shut down this Tower/Matrix at its source. Even a medium-range guess by most people can pinpoint this European source country. Use my 200-plus region-and-zone system to weed out the conspirators. This has already happened near like this, but probably later on this week someone will ask, "I hear you paint nation-states in multicolors?" I've survived so far. I feel you. (superthunderbird).

The goal of the assination was to provoke the retaliation. Hedrych was succeeding to well with his carrot and stick approach in quelling Czechoslovak resistance. Brits never at loss for a spot of end-justifies-the-means reasoning.

@memkiii No need to berate yourself like that for being ignorant. You could read some reputable historians. It is well documented that the in-country resistance leaders (e.g., Mastný) begged Beneš and the Brits to call it off because "an attempt against Heydrich's life... would be of no use to the Allies and its consequences for our people would be immeasurable". But to no avail. After the war Beneš denied any involvement.
As to British involvement... the SOE records are still sealed 81 years after the event. Why?
