I do this at home, too. I use 1:1 yellow and black mustard, a bit olive oil, a bit dark sugar, apple cider vinegar, salt, water. No commercial mustard can beat it.
I see your comment is from a year ago 😆….do you have actual measurements especially the sugar? Bit = ?
🌸
I would love your recipe also where did you get your black mustard seeds
Great vid, I learned some key aspects of the process like temperature and letting the prep rest in the fridge to rid bitterness. Thanks a lot for sharing and cheers feom Alberta-Canada!!!
I really appreciate you explaining the role each ingredient plays in the recipe. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Just made my first batch with yellow powder and black seeds. Used cold water and wine vinegar. Should be good if it doesn’t burn my nose too much. All our decent mustards here in Thailand are imported and taxed so this is a big cost savings.
Update: Best mustard in Thailand. Love it.
I've only made the fermented mustard from nourishing traditions. It's a 3 day ferment and so powerful! Some history as well: During the era of king's, mustard always sat at the ready next to the king in case he was poisoned! He would take a spoonful and it would cause him to vomit. The mustard I make from the above mentioned will cause you an upset stomach if you take too much. Our family loves mustard but when we over did this homemade mustard we learned just how true it was, a little goes a long way.
Judithsmith, please send me the fermented mustard you spoke about. I can't wait to try it. ThankYOU. Blessings to you from my heart
@msparamin3285 you can find it online
You have finally answered few of my painfull questions. Cold/warm water and the bitterness of my mustard. Thanks!
It’s SO EASY!!!!! I looked for a recipe after tasting some incredible mustard made on the other side of the continent. I had no idea it would be this easy. Can’t wait to try it. I subscribed!
Wonderful!
What a great tip about the temperature of the water. I have made mustard spreads before and had no idea why they were always spicier. Refrigerated water was why. Thanks for a great video!
Great video. I just found this channel. I subscribed to this channel as well. So glad I found it. Love it ❤. Thank you for sharing. God Bless.
Thanks and welcome
I'll surely be adding mustard to my own homemade condiments 🤩 Thanks for sharing your recipes!
Wow, I have been making mustard with the "boil on the stove" recipe. That is always pretty potent on the senses. This seems to be much easier. Thanks Carolyn.
You did an amazing job t3aching this.
So simple. Cant wait to make this. Thanks again for a fantastic recipe. So when are you making a cookbook? All your amazing recipes deserve a cookbook 🤩
I didnt realize it was so easy🥰😎. Thank you as always, love your mustard dish!❤
TimIng is everything! I was just at the grocery store Friday and thought to myself I wish I knew how to make my own mustard. I wonder if it's possible. Next day...your video.
I'm going to be fully prepared for the day that God blesses me with my Homestead! You guys are awesome.
I make a fantastic ketchup, and kept thinking I wanted to make my own mustard, but I hadn't seen anyone do it. Now I can try that too!
I cant wait to make this, ketchup, and the mayo. Especially with the price of condiments. Thank you.
I love this channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us
I learned a lot from this short tutorial. Thanks for sharing all of this information!🙂
Wow! I didn't realize it would be this easy... Thanks 🤗❤️
I LOOOVE MUSTARD AND THIS VIDEO! There's a mustard museum in Wisconsin that's a great adventure. Taste all the mustards there, then use Carolyn's recipe for the base. Thanks so much!
Much love from the Midwest US 💖
Thank you for sharing this easy recipe for mustard.
"Honey, the girls and I are making mustard, tonight. Do you care to stop and pick me up, please?" 🍾
Muahahahaha!!!
Thank you, this is beyond perfect in length and content!
You're looking so well, Carolyn! ☺️ So happy for you!
Thank you so much!
Thank you! Looks delicious and so easy! Now I’m going to watch your Mayo video!
I love the video. Great explanations and I’m going to give this a try. I will say this, I don’t know if there’s any person in the United States, or the world that has to make a financial decision based on mustard. I see this more of a artisan journey than a cost savings project.
Great work. I can’t wait to try this!!
Who knows what will be available to purchase in the future?? Or what ingredients will be in it?? Making mustard today! The less I can buy at the only store near me, the better.
My new favorite channel!!
Thank you for giving us this.
Thanks so much! Last time I went to the store to buy my favorite stone ground mustard, the shelves were empty. Nice to know that I can make my own now. I'll be using this in my favorite chicken marinade going forward.
Do you follow a recipe? That sounds wonderful
Absolutely going to try it thank you!
Thank you, Carolyn.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe! I appreciate you!
Thank You sooo much for this recipe.👍
I recently learned how to make cranberry mustard from the BALL BOOK and OMG is it delicious. I also made a hearty German mustard. So much easier than I imagined.
Linda Storza, please send me your recipe for your cranberry mustard and black mustard. Thank you. Blessings
I simply LOVE watching your how to videos. Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️
Glad you like them!
Carolyn we really need a tutorial for that lovely homemade soap in the background!!!
Great instructions. So simple!
Good. I have been searching for the process of making mustard paste. Thank you very much. I will try it.
This is great 👍 Thank you. 😊 I have all the ingredients so I'll be making this today.
I made this mustard using yellow mustard seed & very cold water. Boy was it spicy hot. I toned it down by adding juice & a few pickles from my 14 days pickles. It’s still a little spicy but it’s delicious. Thanks for a keeper recipe.
I'm really enjoying this channel thanks for all you do
Glad you enjoy it!
I've been making my own mayo and ketchup for years. At age 61, I never thought about making mustard until today when I realized I was out, but had a big can of ground mustard. As luck would have, I also have a jar of mustard seeds. Yay - I'll be making some today! Thanks for the tutorial and links :)
thank you so much for this!
Thank you so much for the info. With your explanations, I understand now why my mustered was so hot…😊❤
This sounds fun
Thanks
just made this using your video and website yesterday. I used ice water (41F). turned out great! I think next time I will back the salt down a little but I'm one of those people who are a bit sensitive to salt taste ...this is a great starting reference, thanks a ton!
I've made mustard before but I ran across black mustard seeds.
I doubled your recipe and substituted the water for ice cold dry vermouth.
Loving it already even before it sits in the refrigerator.
Thank you that is so awesome I'm going to try that 😊
Thank you- my Dad will love it, I'm sure! Could you do ketchup, next? 😉😁👍
Ketchup is tomato with sugar, no more sugar, no more…
Thank you wonderful lady ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Que bien. I love it
Thanks for the recipe great! I ferment mine it is a little more bitter but probiotics are worth it! Nancy from Canada!
Thank you!
great learning teach..
Thanks, Carolyn, for this video. I didn't see anything in the comments re how much commercial powder to use. A video on the Suttons Daze channel uses your Tbsp6 seeds and C1/2 commercial powder, so I went with it. My mustard is a bunch spicier than I expected, but I can see where and how homemade beats storebought. I threw in Tbsp2 white sugar and Tbsp1 honey in hopes of cooling the kick some. Can't wait to try this with my next turkey sandwich.
If nothing else, this mustard is gonna kick my oncoming sinus infection where it counts!!! Yay!!!
Here is the recipe: homesteadingfamily.com/homemade-mustard/
I love different mustards. Thank you for showing how easy it is to make. Can I ask where you purchased your grinder and what brand it is?
I make a fermented mustard that is amazing! A neighbor said its like some they would buy in NY at a high end store, and miss getting.
I always add honey, its fantastic.
And I often add some lavender glowers or 1tsp of essence - sooo yummy.
will try tomorrow! thx
I'm annoyed at myself for how EASY this is. I could have had my fancy expensive mustard for PENNIES!!!
Thank you for sharing. ❤
I tried to make mustard with wine and alls I could taste was that wine 🤣 it was horrible. I'll definitely try this as I'm nearly out of mustard now and I refuse to pay $3 for a tiny jar!! Thanks so much. 🥰
It’s also super easy to grow mustard! Grows really well, just harvesting the seeds can take some work!
I love this recipe. My family loves mustard. It will be so nice to not have to buy it
I literally went on your site yesterday to print your mayo recipe and then since the mustard one came up too, I printed and read through that too. How timely that your video for it came out same day! I think it’s a sign 🙌🏼😁 homemade condiments on the way! (I did make the mayo with olive oil, but must say I think it’ll invest in the grape seed since I’m not loving that olive flavour so much).
You need to make her ketchup too! It’s delicious 😋
@@libbyleatherwood6940 I will!! I got the ingredients not too long ago, but haven’t made the time to do it yet. Thanks for the reminder. 🙏🏼😊
Fantastic!!! Thanks. I spend a small fortune on good mustard. No more.
Wow 😂 Thank you didn't kw it's that easy 👏
The fact that it is so simple is kind of mind blowing. Now I just need to find a good reliable way to get mustard seeds. Guess I'm gonna have to look up if and how I can grow mustard if I can. I know we had wild mustard, but that's invasive and can leave you with burns, so idk how good that would be to use. I'm sure there's a different kind that is used for edible mustard.
Stop telling me what to do!!. A hug, I love your content :)
Have you ever made your own fermented mustard? It’s really good!
Just awesome. How long can I store the mustard seeds.
I didn't realise that temperature makes a difference to the hotness. Thanks for that info. I've also read somewhere that grinding dry makes it hotter than grinding wet, i.e. soak the whole seeds in the liquid first. The liquid prevents chemical reaction that happens in air to create that heat. Can't remember other details. I also vaguely remember that fermenting is another method, unless this is a form of fermentation?
Hello! I am amazed about the information you share! Thank you! As I am looking for an adequate spice grinder for quite some time now, would you care to tell which product you use? Greetings from Austria, AJ
Nice
I enjoyed this video, but I’m really interested in the bars of soap curing on the counter. Do you guys have any videos of soap making? I think soap making class would be great for the traditional skills site.
Hi, love your channel. I do have a question about buying mustard seed in bulk or most spices in general. So...how long will these spices last when buying in bulk? I guess the quality after several months is what I am wondering about.
Have you ever sprouted the mustard seeds?
I looked up mustard making tutorials to make some homemade mustard to smoke in my smoker to see if it makes it better.
I’ve been looking for a video like this, I bought (accidentally) a ton and I mean a ton of mustard seed. Pretty sure I have enough mustard see to make enough mustard for the next 5 years
Thank you for this, I didn't know making mustard is so easy! I have mustard seeds, but I don't have a grinder. Do you think I could grind my seeds in a mortar, or does it have to be fine powder? I don't have access to mustard powder in my country.
I like mixing seed
❤❤❤
Could you please do a talk on how to properly can meats if your electric goes out for a long period of time . Do you thaw everything and cold pack or what. I do have a gas stove and a camp stove.
Hi, I couldn't seem to find the link to where you purchased the Bulk mustard seeds.
Thank you!
Not seeing the link to Azure Standard for the mustard seed, but I can look it up.
So if you add honey does that have to then be refrigerated?
Also, do you have any suggestions for making the powder without a spice grinder? I have very few electrical appliances, and wonder if there are any options besides a mortar and pestle for that step?
What is the measurement for store bought mustard powder? Is it still 6 tbs? Thanks!
🙏
Are those mustard seeds from your garden? Thank you for the demo.
Does it matter what type of water? I know tap water quality can vary and be dangerous at times (boil water notices), bottled purified, spring or distilled water? Are we looking for a certain ph? I'm looking for a mild, traditional yellow mustard. If I use warm water, will placing it in the fridge defeat the effects and make it spicy? Do I need to leave it out for a while before putting it in the Fridge for that 24 time period?
Also, how do you know when it's gone bad?
🏆
Can you tell me what brand spice grinder youre using ??
I grow mustard greens. Silly question but if I let those go to seed can I use those seeds to grind?
Yes! You can!
I was about to ask the same thing! Thanks
@@HomesteadingFamily And are the mustard seeds you buy plantable? Would it be possible to take a few and grow mustard in the garden?
@@AuntNutmeg I have grown mustard from seeds I buy at the store
Thank you! Of course, the goats got to them before I could harvest but next year for sure!
I made this recipe the first time with cold water because I was going for spicy hot, but the second time I used warm water and it still came out spicy hot. Both times I put them in the refrigerator for two full days before tasting. I am using both whole yellow mustard seeds and totally grounded yellow mustard seeds. Any help would definitely be appreciated.
How long will your mustard seeds last and the storage of the seeds? Thanks for tips! Making it today, just want to make sure I store the seeds correctly.
i will use a sealed mason jar
Will this mustard taste at all like (French’s) yellow plain ol’ mustard?
While I like dijon and brown mustards we rly love basic yellow mustard and finding a recipe is impossible.
I didn’t know to buy white seeds (and add turmeric for the color)-is that rly the key to making basic mustard?
@aycaurelman I would love tour recipe also where did you get your black mustard seeds?
Here is the recipe: homesteadingfamily.com/homemade-mustard/ And we like to buy our mustard seeds here: www.azurestandard.com/?a_aid=EWfmOQQSY2
Can you do a video of making soap? Thank you 😇🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for the receipt but I can’t find it on pdf anywhere ..
I have a question. How long past expiration date on can food is it eatable? Stored in dark cool cupboard. Will heat effect the canned food as well?
