  • In this video we are going to look at how the Japanese aesthetic concept of Yugen, or suggested beauty, could have a great effect on your photography. Later, I will go through some of my photos to show you a number of ways to use Yugen as a theme for expressing yourself.

I appreciate your work trying to capture an aesthetic, a feel. Your commentary is helpful to me. It must be very difficult. I think of standing on the rim of the grand canyon, the feel, the sense of awe verse pictures. What a wonderful thing to be able to share a sense of presence, depth and awe. Thank you and best wishes.

Yes, it's not an easy thing and still it's always up for interpretation. I think you are there with that feeling of awe from the unknown. Trying to communicate that feeling isn't easy though.

Lovely- in the first Watkins Glen shot, the distant waterfall looks to me like a geisha wearing a large obi. And later on, I really like the contrast captured by the stone lined steps with the city buildings in the distance.

That's cool you saw that in the Watkins Glen shot! That garden in the middle of Tokyo was hard to get shots without the surrounding skyscrapers, so I just went with it and gave up fighting the background.

@9:28. It is interesting to note that the suburbs are on the left, and the pathway is going uphill to the right, avoiding the noisy suburbs and searching for peace.
    Sorry for the long sentence....

Great observation or interpretation of the scene! Thanks so much for your point of view.

My new favourite channel! I love your commentary. I’m learning a lot about Japanese aesthetics. This really stood out to me: "Yugen is rooted in the now." Lots of other hidden gems in this video too.
I love the inclusion of poetry from Zeami. I recently self-published a book on haikus (my own haikus) and would like to improve on my writing. Do you have any recommended poetry books by Zeami (translated into English)? His words inspire me.

Glad you liked the video and are enjoying the channel! Congratulations on getting your work out there, it's not an easy thing to accomplish. Unfortunately I haven't come across any poetry based books from him, most focus on his Noh plays. This book is a good primer on his thoughts on Japanese culture etc.: The Spirit of Noh: A New Translation of the Classic Noh Treatise the Fushikaden
