An overlooked spoof movie is Wrongfully Accused (1998). It stars Leslie Nielsen and is written and directed by Pat Proft (one of the writers of the Naked Gun and Hot Shots! films). It is mostly a spoof on "The Fugitive" and "Clear and Present Danger", with bits from "Mission: Impossible", "Baywatch", "North By Northwest" and "Titanic".
And… “The Natural,” “A League of Their Own,” “The Sandlot,” “The Pride of the Yankees,” “42,” “Moneyball,” “Damn Yankees,” “ Bull Durham,” “Major League,” and “The Rookie”
Police Squad was a short-lived tv series that this movie is based on. A lot of the jokes in this movie were carried over from the show. the first batter and the assassin were actual baseball players, one of whom is in the Hall of Fame.
It's all started in 1982 as a tv series named Police Squad! It was a spoof of a cop show from the 50s called M Squad. They shot 6 episodes, got cancelled and brought the concept back on the big screen with a much better success. The big screen version also uses elements from the gritty cop movies released in the 70s like Dirty Harry or Telefon (both directed by Don Siegel by the way).
Sir Leslie appears in Scary Movie 3 (the last worthwhile movie in that franchise) which was produced and directed by the same team that made the Naked Gun series. A sadly forgotten gem in the parody genre is from 1990 called National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 that stars Samuel L. Jackson and Emilio Estevez. It's basically a Lethal Weapon spoof.
@@shanester1832 Agreed. I was very disappointed with SM4. It seemed like they just decided to go with the same kind of cheap shots and toilet humor which brought the parody genre down in the mid 2000's.
There was an earlier movie with this same title in 1956. Movies/shows to see to get certain references: So You Want to Be a Detective (Short 1948), Johnny Dangerously, Fletch, Platoon, Dirty Harry, Dragnet (Radio 1949 to 1957, Television 1951-1959 and 1967-1970, and film 1954, 1966, and 1986), and of course, Police Squad.
Great movie. I hope you also do the sequels. It is a very funny trilogy, This trilogy is based on a short lived tv series of 6 episodes of Police Squad that was a head of its time and canceled you should also see it. The secretary in the movie that served the tea and was hypnotize is the directors mother she was also in airplane (the woman with the makeup). You should also see Top Secret another funny movie from the same directors of Airplane and this movie. Fyi The Shakespeare in the park bit is a spoof on Dirty Harry movie line (Which is also a great movie you should see). Fyi the bad guy in this movie you see him in Star Trek 2 movie
😎👍 A lot of people besides me are going to mention this, but it's worth repeating...The next Zucker Zucker & Abrahams film you MUST watch is "Top Secret!" (1984). It came out in between "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun," and it's arguably even funnier than both of them. And someone like you, who is heavily into James Bond, will especially appreciate it. 🐄
From giggles to belly laughs , you had them all ! I like serious Jen , and sad Jen and spooked out Jen , but silly Jen is my fave ! I had a great time but that is not unusual with you . Great job !! God Save The Queen !
The song you liked "I Love LA" is written and performed by Randy Newman who is famous for writing the scores and songs in the Toy Story films. Remember "You've got a friend in me"?
The scene of Frank Drebbon doing his acrobatics in his apartment is honestly the best scene in the entire picture for me. The reason I love it so much is because it's one of the greatest examples of stunt-work in film history. You literally cannot tell where Leslie Neilson ends, and the stuntman begins, and vice versa.
3:59 Mark! William Shatner stars as the commander of a moonbase! We got to see the "Starship Enterprise" as she appeared in the original series, for the first and only time on the big screen! The story is about the "Mayflower 2" trying to fly from the Earth to Luna! 😂
The VHS box for this at the time just straight up gave away the plot and was inkeeping with the jokes, pointing out the baseball player as the assassin.
Another comment mentioned John Houseman as the driving instructor. Houseman was one of the most significant figures in American theater. Along with Orson Welles he co-founded the Mercury Theatre, and co-produced _Citizen Kane._ He was the first head of the Drama Division at the Julliard School. He founded The Acting Company with members of the first graduating class of the Julliard acting program, including Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, David Ogden Stiers, and a dozen others. In his long career he produced or directed some forty Broadway plays and thirty-three films. It was only rather late in life that he began acting.
That first assassin was the Sucked Brothers mother. She also ruined her makeup in the lavatory at the end of Airplane¡ ! John House man was a distinguished Oscar winning actor famous for playing Edward Stratton II in Silver Spoons and as an acting teacher at Julliard.
great reaction Jen (even if you did miss some of the jokes). Also in the Naked Gun films you MUST read the end credits, they are so funny. "Mr Weitz divorce attorney" is one that always gets me (see the credits to understand why). :)
The music was very good. The song that played during the baseball game is "I Love LA" by Randy Newman. The song played after Frank and Jane fall in love is "Something Good" written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, performed by Herman's Hermits. My favorite part is the baseball game. It was funny the whole time. In the 80's, most people would have recognized the right fielder who tried to kill the queen as Reggie Jackson, a top player at the time and a star on the Angels.
This movie was written & directed by the same three guys that wrote and directed "Airplane". Their names are, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams. I went to high school with them in the 1970's in Milwaukee, Wi. Besides Airplane, they also did Airplane 2, The Naked Gun, The naked Gun 2 1/2, The naked gun 33/3, Kentucky Fried Movie several of the "Scary Movie" movies, just to name a few.
"Nordberg" was a large billboard on some kind of factory visible when driving south on I-43 towards Chicago near Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. I always had assumed it was the name of the plant. The guys who wrote this movie - Zucker, Abraham's, Zucker - grew up in Shorewood, WI, which is also on I-43 but just North of Milwaukee, WI. As kids, for some inexplicable reason, we thought the Nordberg sign was funny. I assume that ZAZ thought the same thing and used it in this movie. I assume, I do not know.
I love it when the dude who is so tall his head is outside the frame wipes his face and half a banana falls down.. bawahahaha.. It’s the simple stuff, ya know?..
The actor playing the villainous Mr. Ludwig, Ricardo Montalban, is most well known for playing Mr. Rourke for seven seasons on ABC's Fantasy Island, from 1977-1984. He's had a long career though. He played in two of the original Planet of the Apes movies, he was a villain on the original Star Trek, a role which he reprised in the second movie, The Wrath of Kahn. He also played a Classy villain in the 1974 TV movie Wonder Woman, which was VERY loosely based on the comics. The baseball player who tries to kill the queen is Reggie Jackson, a real-life, famous baseball player. In the scene in the car where they had red lips, they were eating pistachios. For cosmetic reasons, they used to dye the shells red, and this red dye would come off on your fingers (and sometimes your lips) when you ate them.
The baseball player that was trying to kill the Queen is Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson who was playing for the California Angels when the movie was made.
The great John Houseman did a hilariously unexpected uncredited cameo as the driving instructor. If you look up John Houseman’s biography, one will understand why just his very appearance in a film like this is hilarious. By the way, this is John Houseman’s final film before his passing .
Jen, so many great baseball movies out there to check out. You really don't need to be a baseball or sports movie fan to enjoy them. To name a few: Field of Dreams The Natural Bull Durham The Rookie Can't go wrong with any of those. 😁👍
And it's worth rewatching many, many times. The large number of background gags (and foreground - like walking around the set walls, which you magnificently caught) will make this so much more fun. "Use your open eye, Frank" you caught, too. AIRPLANE II isn't worth watching except to say "I have" but the next two NAKED GUNS are good enough.
I used go to Angels games all the time as a kid in the 80s - we lived ten minutes from the stadium! The player programmed to kill was Hall-of-Famer Reggie Jackson.
Those red things were pistachios. Back in the day, imported pistachios were dyed red when shipped and often left a little bit of dye on your fingers and mouth (not nearly as much as they had on them). The gun the bad guy had was a micro uzi.
As others have noted, Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was the player trying to kill the Queen. Another former player in the film was Jay Johnstone, who was the lead off hitter for the Mariners. Sadly, Johnstone died of COVID in 2020.
Hi Jen, I`m glad you enjoyed it, yes , the sequels are well worth reacting to. I also like (Airplane 2) with a certain William Shatner in good form, though sadly IMDb is not so keen, apparently. Similarly, I enjoyed Spielberg`s 1979 film (1941) War/Action/Comedy. As for other`s, there are the 1991/3 (Hot Shots!) films, the 1984 (Top Secret!), the 1977 (The Kentucky Fried Movie) & the Police Academy series of films.
They used to dye pistachios red back in the day, because their natural green color was deemed unpalatable. What makes the scene even funnier is they were eating 'gas station' portions that would cost a fortune, lol.
Don't know if you noticed but these movies (Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots) always have jokes hidden in the credits. The NG sequels are definitely worth watching. And Hot Shots. Airplane sequels...not as much, but they have their moments.
4K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 32:02 Mark! You're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: Haha! Leslie Nelson stars in the space drama "Forbidden Planet" that inspired "Star Trek" and then he and Cindy Williams star in a space comedy with many names that spoofed "Star Trek"! So covered the bases in his time! 😊
I think you should see the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet if only to appreciate what was perhaps Leslie Nielsen's greatest serious dramatic role. It's amazing that it took so long for anyone at Hollywood to decide that he should try something silly. What really impresses me is rock and roll royalty like Priscilla Presley turning out to be a great comic star in her own right. Johnny English Reborn is another comedy about an incompetent hero type interacting with the Queen. Thanks, Jen!
Hard to know which is the biggest transformation between on-screen characters… Leslie Nielsen as the Commander in Forbidden Planet vs his role here, or Ricardo Montelban as the bad guy in this vs Kahn in ST3 😂 I hope they both had immense fun deliberately hamming it up in this movie 😂
Oh, thank you, Jen. You are the first reactor in quite a long while who has actually recognized who the world leaders are in the opening bit. Most of the young pups don't even seem to recognize them. Ricardo Montablan's gun was a Micro Uzi. And yes, those were all actual famous sports broadcasters, and the players were all actual players. Especially Reggie Jackson, who was one of the biggest baseball players in the US for a time. For good baseball flicks, The Natural, Bull Durham, For the Love of the Game, and of course, Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch.
The gun the bad guy pulled at the end is an Uzi Pistol. The sequels are both great, but you should see The Untouchables first. There is an iconic scene in there that you'll see in a sequel. Similar movies are the Pink Panther movies, starting with the second one. The first one "The Pink Panther" was a heist movie that featured a French inspector. That inspector was so popular that they did a number of spinoff movies around him. They even tried to reboot it a few times, but they weren't as good. There are a lot of baseball movies worth watching, but I think you'd like The Sandlot, the Bad News Bears (Original), Major League, A league of their Own, and Bull Durham. You don't need to be a baseball fan to appreciate them. The first two are technically kids movies, but they hold up. They are all great movies, and baseball plays a major part in them, but they aren't "baseball" movies in the true sense. For more focused movies, there's Eight Men Out, which you should see before Field of Dreams. It's not a sequel or anything, but the same character appears in both and it will help to know the first story before seeing the second. The Natural is good, but probably not a good fit for a reaction channel. Moneyball talks about the business side of pro baseball.
Leslie Nielsen was from Saskatchewan, Canada - the son of an RCMP Mountie. He was a serious TV actor during the Live broadcast era of the early '50s, and got his break in the feature film classic Sci-Fi epic FORBIDDEN PLANET (MGM, 1956)--> React to that! He didn't turn into a comedic actor until his deadpan deliveries in AIRPLANE! (1980), which revived his mediocre career into that of a cult star.
Great reaction to a classic movie! There were at least 2 real baseball players in the game...Jay Johnstone and Reggie Jackson. Also Joe West was (is) a real umpire and he was in the game, he said 'You can't throw an umpire out of the game'.
5:08 "'Nordberg.' What kind of _name_ is that?" Well, that part's actually kind of odd. It's German. It means "north mountain." I know, because I've been studying German, and one method I've been employing is taking kids movies that I know and watching them in German. You know the movie _Frozen?_ The German-dubbed translation for that title is _Die Eiskönigin._ There's a scene in the movie that has the younger sister, Anna, at a shop in the woods, crossing paths with a mountaineer named Kristoff. The shop owner asks Kristoff where the sudden cold snap is coming from and he replies, "From the north mountain." That scene, with the German dubbing on, has him replying, "Von Nordberg." This method of taking kids movies (specifically _kids_ movies) and watching them in a language you're trying to learn is a method I heartily recommend. This way, each word, the moment you hear it, is anchored to an emotionally significant scene, and because it's a kid's movie, the grammar and syntax are simpler.
Yes both the Airplane and Naked Gun sequels are worth seeing. Fun fact. These movies were based off the Police Squad tv show. That was cancelled after only six episodes because....it had too many jokes. Some excutive desided the audience would get mad at all the jokes they were missing and canceled it.
I also recommend the Police Squad series that these movies were based on. The series was cancelled after only 6 episodes; the show was ahead of its time in my opinion. The pilot is a little uneven, but the series quickly hits its stride. They have to pack their jokes into only 22 minutes per episode, so it's non-stop gags. I also second Top Secret. It's my favorite of the slapstick movies from this era.
The younger generations miss 90% of the fun of the opening scene not being able to recognize the "participants", that's General Idi Amin Dada dictator of Uganda, Muammar Ghaddafi of Lybia, and Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, was pleasantly surprised that you knew it was Yasser Arafat and Mikhail Gorbachev. By the way "I can't believe we just met yesterday" and you go "Me neither", hilarious!
the entire Naked Gun Trilogy is very underrated (The 3rd entry is so overlooked due to when it was released nobody really gives it love when in honestly it’s the perfect book end to the Trilogy) There was also a short lived tv series Police Squad (the tv show inspired the original movie) For a tv show it was very silly but, many jokes went into the 3 Films (Scary Movie 3&4) were essentially like Naked Gun swapping out Cops/Action films with Sci Fi/Horror) Not Another Teen Movie is one of the most misunderstood Parody movies (It’s very manic and doesn’t know what it wants to be with elements of 80’s John Hughes teen comedies with late 90’s early ‘00 Teen sex comedies (It’s by no means bad but, as a comedy parody the structure is all over the place

"Oh, I need to see Leslie Nielsen interact with the Queen!"
*looks on in amused anticipation......
Oh man I watched all 4 Lethal Weapons, that sounds awesome! 👍
@@jenmurrayxo It's a little tough to find but it is so funny!
I was such a huge fan of Scary Movie 3, still perplexed as to why 4 just didn't work. It had Zucker behind the wheel but the magic wasn't there.
@@shanester1832 Agreed. I was very disappointed with SM4. It seemed like they just decided to go with the same kind of cheap shots and toilet humor which brought the parody genre down in the mid 2000's.
"Sir Leslie Nielsen"?
He was a Canadian-Danish actor, not British.
When Canada's sweetheart smiles, the world smiles with her. 😊🥰 xxx
Oh, man.
Too much.
But nice...
"the umpire saved the queen"
"Look, it`s Enrico Palazzo"
Also i want to give a huge MVP to Stephanie, the student driver.
If you like Weird Al, watch his film UHF
“Look, it’s Enrico Pallazo”
That phrase always gets me 😂
The woman who played the villain's secretary was the director's mother. She was in all their movies.
19:45 Hands down, my favorite gag (the reaction to the expired Chinese food). I cackle every time 🤣
Great movie.
Leslie Nielsen is such a legend. He's buried here in Florida and his epitaph reads: "Let 'er rip" Who else would put that on their gravestone?
You have the sweetest personality, I swear!
A "Dingy" is a small boat. The joke was that Frank thought he was talking about taking a piss
8:02 "Its value is... _beyond_ estimation."
Which means it cannot be insured and Ludwig was _particularly_ mistaken to show it to Drebin.
That first assassin was the Sucked Brothers mother. She also ruined her makeup in the lavatory at the end of Airplane¡ ! John House man was a distinguished Oscar winning actor famous for playing Edward Stratton II in Silver Spoons and as an acting teacher at Julliard.
I love that you knew who the foreign leaders Frank fights were.
You are a very special woman.😂
Finally after watching about 30 different people react to this movie someone recognizes the Yassir Arafat and Gorbachov lookalikes.
great reaction Jen (even if you did miss some of the jokes). Also in the Naked Gun films you MUST read the end credits, they are so funny. "Mr Weitz divorce attorney" is one that always gets me (see the credits to understand why). :)
8:44 Mark! This is extra funny to me because I've seen "Forbidden Planet" and "The Poseidon Adventure" & "Fantasy Island" and "Star Trek"! 😂😅
29:46 Mark! The movies are a continuation of the "NBC" series "Police Squad"! 😂
The queen was played by Jeanette Charles who had a decades-long career on British TV - any sitcom or sketch show that needed the queen, that was her.
To name a few:
Field of Dreams
The Natural
Bull Durham
The Rookie
Can't go wrong with any of those. 😁👍
Did you seriously leave out Major League?
Going further back in time, I would also add Pride Of The Yankees.
@@darkzer0670 Yes, because the list can go on and on.
A League of Their Own
The Bad News Bears
The Sandlot
Just to name a few more.
This movie and its sequels are based on the short-lived (but hilarious) TV show "Police Squad", also starring Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin.
Leslie Neilson was born in Canada. All great people are born in Canada
The doctor riding the missle was a nod to Dr Strangelove too
Hi Jen, I`m glad you enjoyed it, yes , the sequels are well worth reacting to.
17:16 Pistachios, they used to dye them red to look fancy.
They used to dye pistachios red back in the day, because their natural green color was deemed unpalatable. What makes the scene even funnier is they were eating 'gas station' portions that would cost a fortune, lol.
FYI, the baseball player assassin at the end was Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson who I believe was still an active player for the Angels at the time.
Notes: Haha! Leslie Nelson stars in the space drama "Forbidden Planet" that inspired "Star Trek" and then he and Cindy Williams star in a space comedy with many names that spoofed "Star Trek"! So covered the bases in his time! 😊
24:52 Baseball movie to check out that's usually a hit with the girls: "For Love of the Game" starring Kevin Costner and the late Kelly Preston
Don't forget Major League!
Leslie Neilson was a national treasure. NAKED GUN❤❤❤❤❤
5:08 "'Nordberg.' What kind of _name_ is that?"
Well, that part's actually kind of odd.
The shop owner asks Kristoff where the sudden cold snap is coming from and he replies, "From the north mountain." That scene, with the German dubbing on, has him replying, "Von Nordberg."
This method of taking kids movies (specifically _kids_ movies) and watching them in a language you're trying to learn is a method I heartily recommend.
I like both sequels equally as much as the first although they each have slightly different vibes so I could see how others may feel otherwise
Naked Gun is taken from an 80s sitcom 'Policy Squad' - very wacky and funny show. Thank you for your reaction!
If you haven't notice, you already saw Leslie Nielsen in another movie "The Poseidon Adventure (1972)", he was the captain.
