- Going on a big solo adventure takes careful planning and having all of the right gear. This is all about my most essential gear that we will be taking on the Oregon BDR routes to make sure we can keep ourselves out of, or get ourselves out of any trouble.

Man, great kit! Love these videos, especially the explanations for why you are taking it. Happy trails!
Thanks, I thought it might be useful for some people
@@TrailTravelerdefinitely!
20K!!! Great job!!!!
Thanks, much appreciated.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
You carry quite a few more straps than we do but to each their own… The most important piece of kit that you might discuss in a future video is a good first aid kit and the knowledge to use it. Safe travels!
You are absolutely right. We do have a first aid kit inside the Jeep. I probably was just thinking that is a given that everyone should have one because it never leaves the Jeep and isn't specific to one trip.
@@TrailTraveler agreed. But for those with less experience than us I think it’s important to keep bringing it up. Enjoy your videos!
Not sure if you remember with how much you're out, but you helped me and my friend who got his Subaru stuck in the snow in Wyoming in January of 2023. Thought it was funny that this comes up, because I just got back from an Oregon BDR trip, myself, in my Tacoma that I wish I had in Wyoming when we got his Subaru stuck 😆
I definitely remember that! Did you complete the whole BDR? I’ve heard there is still snow on section 7.
@@TrailTraveler no, we only did sections 2-5 this time as that's all we had time for. I don't think there would be right now due to OR's Cascades snow ceiling being so high right now. Good luck though!
Congratulations on the 20k !
Thank you!!
Great preparation. Especially love how you keep in touch with someone at home. Comforting for all!
Absolutely!! Too many stories of people being stranded for days because they couldn't reach anyone and nobody knew where they were.
Please grab a first aid kit , more important than the satelite
Sounds like a badass trip !!
We do carry a first aid kit. It wasn’t specific to this trip so I didn’t think to mention it
That looks like a great loadout! Not too little, not too crazy much. I bring mostly the same gear on my JKUR trips (but no trailer, not a fan AT ALL of trailers). I don't own a Pull Pal, but would get one depending on the trip if solo. I also have a second 20-gallon gas tank installed, so no need for Rotopax. The only suggestion I'd make is to bring a longer-handled shovel, which is particularly useful for digging snow out from under the middle of your rig. Even if that one extends, it can't extend by very much. Other than that, I agree completely with this setup. Well done! 🙂
I am probably going to pick up a better shovel today as well as a new bottle jack. I sometimes take a hi-lift, but given the conditions we are going, I think it would just be empty weight.
@@TrailTraveler Yeah, the 2 main things I think a Hi-Lift is good for are winching (especially backwards with no 2nd vehicle) and debeading a tire laid flat on the ground. Neither of those situations happens often enough to warrant carrying the weight of one. Weight is the enemy! I also bring a bottle jack and a Safe Jack adapter to go under the axle.
@@VideosOffRoad Exactly. When we did the Wyoming BDR, I was getting ready to setup a backwards pull with the hi-lift when some people came by and helped us out. In Oregon, there is only one section of concern right now, and it will be close to 2 weeks before we get there. Worst case, I lay done some traction boards over the snow to drive over it.
@@TrailTraveler I carry a Structron S600 shovel. The handle isn't super long, but the teeth on the end of it are very strong and it works well for breaking up really compacted/rocky soil that a regular pointed shovel would struggle mightily with, for example to help level out your vehicle or trailer. I don't think you can buy it at a regular hardware store, though. I had to order mine online. It's a knock off of the Krazy Beaver shovel, for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price.
Is the Colorado BDR doable pulling a small teardrop style off road trailer?
You’ll be fine… I’m be on the OBDR July 6-14th… bring shovel, chainsaw, and 5 gallons of gas. Safe travels 🤙🏽
We should be one day ahead of you. If you see us, something has probably gone wrong. :)
@@TrailTraveler you should look into cowboy tree dinner. Google it
Was doing Gambler 500 weekend of June-21 and ended up doing a good chunk of Section4. At the highest elevation ~6k ft had just a few snow drifts on road but they were really soft and melting. Let us know how it goes and how the later sections around Mt Hood were. We are heading to do the ORBDR week of July 21.
What do you carry for a jack? Do you carry any spare fluids (motor oil, brake fluid etc)? I have found a ratchet strap handy on the trails.
We have never had an issue using the factory scissor jack, but I am buying a bottle jack today. We generally don't carry spare fluids as my trail experience is that if something happened to cause you to lose oil or coolant, it is not something that can be repaired on the trail and then topped off with spare fluids. We do carry a handful of extra ratchet straps in the misc tool bag.
What chain saw is that?
