    Great review of GMRS. I have my HAM radio license and taking the test is easy. My wife is not technically savvy at all, yet she passed with flying colors. Once you pass the license is good for 10 years and you can renew every ten years without cost. To pass the test, just take the online practice tests over and over and over again until you are able to pass it successfully and consistently. You'll find that when you go in to take the real test, it's just like the practice ones.

      @@gammondog Yes it is. I read the books because I found them interesting, and I understood them. I have my degree in Engineering. My wife wanted to do HAM radio with me, so she just did the practices. She has a hard time understanding technical stuff so I knew there was no way I could explain Ohm's Law. Anyway, she passed the test first time through and even got the questions on Ohm's Law correct. My son and daughter and their spouses got their licenses the same way. Easy-Peasy.

      Situations where I have needed to use a repater: 1) Organizing an off-road recovery mission, 2) Getting help for someone in the back country, 3) Participating in our club's weekly nets, 4) Contacting all of the people that are meeting at a specific location but coming from different areas.

    IMO a kinetic pull should always be a last resort, because of the large amount of force involved, especially if something goes wrong and breaks. I carry one, but it's never been used, as the nice slow and controlled winch has always been successful for me. The Aussie's list a kinetic pull dead last in their recovery training. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, though. Also, pulling in reverse is not good. First gear puts more torque to the ground than reverse, and the ring and pinion gears are much stronger going forward than backwards because of the angle of the teeth.

    By far Blackbear is NO WAY near the scariest trail in the US. Unless you have no balls. Take it slow and easy (which is normal since it can be a traffic jam), have a good spotter and someone you trust to guide you around the end switches and it is a breeze. I did it a few times in a Hummer H3; wider than a Jeep. If you fear heights, or don't trust people, not the trail for you. Moab Rim is worse; off canter, big crack (and Hummer H3s do not articulate) and Kane Creek a few hundred feet to the rear...my opinion!

      We have never had an issue using the factory scissor jack, but I am buying a bottle jack today. We generally don't carry spare fluids as my trail experience is that if something happened to cause you to lose oil or coolant, it is not something that can be repaired on the trail and then topped off with spare fluids. We do carry a handful of extra ratchet straps in the misc tool bag.

    That looks like a great loadout! Not too little, not too crazy much. I bring mostly the same gear on my JKUR trips (but no trailer, not a fan AT ALL of trailers). I don't own a Pull Pal, but would get one depending on the trip if solo. I also have a second 20-gallon gas tank installed, so no need for Rotopax. The only suggestion I'd make is to bring a longer-handled shovel, which is particularly useful for digging snow out from under the middle of your rig. Even if that one extends, it can't extend by very much. Other than that, I agree completely with this setup. Well done! 🙂

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler Před 7 dny

      I am probably going to pick up a better shovel today as well as a new bottle jack. I sometimes take a hi-lift, but given the conditions we are going, I think it would just be empty weight.

    • @VideosOffRoad
      @VideosOffRoad Před 7 dny

      @@TrailTraveler Yeah, the 2 main things I think a Hi-Lift is good for are winching (especially backwards with no 2nd vehicle) and debeading a tire laid flat on the ground. Neither of those situations happens often enough to warrant carrying the weight of one. Weight is the enemy! I also bring a bottle jack and a Safe Jack adapter to go under the axle.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler Před 7 dny

      @@VideosOffRoad Exactly. When we did the Wyoming BDR, I was getting ready to setup a backwards pull with the hi-lift when some people came by and helped us out. In Oregon, there is only one section of concern right now, and it will be close to 2 weeks before we get there. Worst case, I lay done some traction boards over the snow to drive over it.

      @@TrailTraveler I carry a Structron S600 shovel. The handle isn't super long, but the teeth on the end of it are very strong and it works well for breaking up really compacted/rocky soil that a regular pointed shovel would struggle mightily with, for example to help level out your vehicle or trailer. I don't think you can buy it at a regular hardware store, though. I had to order mine online. It's a knock off of the Krazy Beaver shovel, for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

      My wife has a think Russian accent and does not like to be on camera or heard. That is her preference. But we appreciate the weak effort at trying to insult us.

    That shoulder strap would work good to secure it in the child seat loops. Great feature.

    I'd like to see this adapted for the IFS liberty. Giving us the ability to go with better gear set.
