I have a 3HP (actual, not just the rating) Devilbiss (branded Craftsman many years ago) compressor with a 30 gallon tank. No trouble at all painting a car with the purple gun. Compressor barely broke a sweat.The purple gun is fairly easy on air as paint guns go. But if you have a 3 gallon pancake compressor "rated" 1HP it is only good for about half a panel before you wait for the compressor. One easy way to know if you have enough air to do larger projects is knowing your compressor motor REQUIRES 240 volts. My 3HP unit uses over 13 amps on 240 so you can guess how limited you can be on a 120 volt line.

Wow! I honestly cannot recall a time when I have been more impressed by the level of professionalism, quality of content, ease of understanding, and overall value if time spent watching your video presentation on the Harbor Freight HVLP paint sprayer with regulator.
Seeing your video has given me the confidence to refinish my kitchen cabinets with Harbor Freight Purple Paint Sprayer white semi-gloss water based enamel & finish coat(s) them with semi-gloss poly topcoat. I plan to purchase the Purple sprayer w/regulator , a pack of paint strainers,, an inline moisture filter & some acetone or similar cleaner for the sprayer assembly from my local Harbor Freight very soon.
I have a Husky compressor that is capable of 5cfm @40 psi and a 5/8in. ID / 25 ft. all rubber hose that'll work well for this task butt the tank is only 4.5 gal.
I have few questions before I get started on this project:
Q: Would it behoove me to purchase (0r possibly rent) an auxillary tank of 20 gal or so?
Q: What product(s) do you recommend for cleaning the spareyr and for thinning the paint? I'll be using water based Behr Premium Enamel for Cabinets & Varathane Polypropylene Behr Premium Enamel for Cabinets & Varathane Polyurethane ?

If your spraying water based products thru the gun, I would spray water thru as a flush at the end. Then flush the gun with lacquer thinner. I flush my guns with lacquer thinner when spraying solvent based products. I would talk to your paint supplier about what to use as a thinning product. Some water base products are fine to thin with water but there are solvents that work with water based or water reducible products also. Your paint supply should know what’s best or the product your using. I seen people use or install auxiliary tanks to do just what your thinking. That gives you added capacity. I’m using a titan capsray 115 system (small and simple and get the job done) for spraying laquer paint and clear on cabinets but wonder how this system would work with the gravity gun since I notice maintenance on that titan machine it’s a lil too costly
I've watched all 3 of your HF gun videos, and I was actually very surprised at the finish you got with the blue paint painting the wheels, and the paint also appeared to have some "candy" quality, which if it did that is even a more impressive result. I couldn't tell which Shopline clear you were using but, again, if it's high solids clear that makes the results more impressive.
What has my attention is the reasonably low amount of orange peel you got. Loads of people, me included can get that gun to lay down a relatively even coat, but I haven't seen anyone get a finish close to that WRT to orange peel without color sanding. In my case, I've managed to get a similar finish using it to spray water and oil-based polyurethane (on furniture), but I've never had that kind of success with paint, and I'm wondering what the trick there is.
You said you were running 30psi at the gun (I'm assuming trigger pulled), I didn't see you do anything special reducing the paint, and I'm assuming that the gun setup is typical for automotive spraying- leave the air valve open all the way since you're regulating at the gun, open the fan pattern up as wide as it will go and still give you an even pattern, set the fluid flow close to wide open since these guns don't deliver near as much material as "professional" guns.
I've tried pressures from about 20-35psi, fluid flow from about half to wide open and usually the fan pattern open all the way/airflow open all the way and typically my results with paint range from a little bit dry (sandy finish) to pretty significant orange peel (smaller and courser pattern than a real orange peel).
Thanks for watching. The dry spray or orange peel is usually from not getting enough material on the part, so that the droplets can flow together, or the solvent package being too dry and not letting the material move after it hits the part. Sometimes to large a droplet will cause orange peel. There is a sweet spot for all these issues. So if your having issues breaking the material up, one trick is to run acetone as part of the solvent package because it thins the material with out causing runs. It drys usually before it hits the part but thins the material so it will atomize. The other side of that is to run a tail solvent that evaporates slower to help get the material to lay out after hitting the part. Down side to tail solvents is high risk of runs and slower dry time. My method is multiple coats a light first coat, followed by a couple even medium coats with a short flash time in between. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the video, im in the market of buying a air compressor for my garage, want to get into painting, condensation and water in the air line is a whole other issue I never thought of and im glad that you covered that, i plan to paint but probably in pieces, fenders and hood all done as separate parts, will a 2 hp, 30 gall, probably 5cfm do ok?

Yes I used the heavier stuff. I’ve seen it done a hundred places never an issue. There are several people that will go on about not using it. I work in a shop part time that it’s been in with no issue for 30 years.
As an extreme amateur painter, with no paint mixing skills, what type of paints should I use for painting metal projects around the house, i .e. mailboxes, exterior doors and such?

Depends on the length of the run, you can get some pressure drop. Having one at the gun is the most accurate way to regulate but you can do it at the compressor. Hope that helps.
I bought a 27 gallon fortress will it be enough to paint small stuff like a bumber or hood? Or roof ??
I don't know your name yet. But thank you again for the lecture. What air compressor is best for painting large vs small project. I already have two air compressors. One is portable and the other is more stationary with a 30 gallon tank. I wasn't thinking of painting automobiles when I purchased these compressors. They were more for running air tools although I do use them for painting small project mostly on wood but some metal work as well with a syphon paint gun. Maybe you can give me some feed back if I post the specs on my compressor up. I did notice your compressor has a large gear/pully on the compressor side that's run by the electrical motor. I'm assuming this setup is to lower the stress on the electrical motor making the compressor more efficient so it doesn't have to cycle on and off so much when using an HVLP paint gun which you mentioned need a high volume of air. Thanks aging for explaining that for best results the compressor need to put out the minimum CFMs required by the paint gun. I'll make sure to check my compressor specification for this. Knowing that really makes a difference. I would have thought the gun wasn't very good not realizing its not only the gun that's plays a factor in its performance and the quality of the paint job when its all done. I have a Porter Cable 6 gallon pancake style compressor and looking to paint the basement ceiling. I'm looking for suggestions.
You would be better of to get an airless sprayer for that application.
I just purchased a 60 gallon DeWalt air compressor, I've seen a lot of videos involving these elaborate air drying piping setups with 50+ ft of piping to allow the air to cool. Is this absolutely necessary for a temporary location to spray an old car? Could I get away with just running a 50ft air hose from the compressor ball valve to one of those regulator/filter water separator devices, and then connect to the paint spray gun? Will this affect the compressor even if I drain it properly after each use?
No you don’t need all that stuff. Drain the water from the tank and use a bulb filter at the gun should be fine.

You want to keep the gun square to the part you are spraying.
I just got a 25 gallon 5 hp it says it does 9.1 scfm at 40 psi an 7.1 scfm at 90 psi can I paint my 4Runner with it just kinda expensive for a nice compressor

I have that same paint sprayer and all it says is 12 SCFM at 45 PSI, there is so much contradictory info on the internet at this point I have no idea what air compressor I can buy to work. I would love a video on specific affordable air compressors we could use because if you go buy charts at home depot I need a $1000+ compressor for this gun? I am looking to put clearcoat on (peeling on my truck in spots) my truck and am willing to do it a panel at a time if need be
You don’t need to spend a thousand buck to get one to handle this paint gun. 3 1/2 horse power and 30 gallon tank will work. Thanks for watching.

Hey man, do you take apart and clean ypur gun before changing each product, meaning going from primer to base to clear, or do you use three different guns and clean them afterwards. Nobody ever shows the in between processes, thanks,
I flush with solvent. I leave solvent in my gun between coating and flush again before I spray.
gixerman01 ok so just empty the paint cup, fill cup with solvent, spray until cleaned, empty remaining solvent, spray air only to flush then ready to go?
Rick Lane yes you will need to rise with solvent and then flush with solvent. If you still see some paint residue when flush keep going till you get clean solvent thru it.

You could use a 30 gallon tank for a project that size.

It should work but you will have let that little compressor keep up. One door one side at a time. If you try to do more or a couple in a row that little air compressor won’t keep up. Thanks for watching.

Tim Miller most pancake models are designed for a nail gun just a short burst of air. I don’t know of any really designed for painting. Sorry.
