Wow, this is the best, most useful video I have found on the internet for gel stain! I had no idea I could add oil paint to customize a stain for my cabinets! This is brilliant. I also didn't realize I will need to let my rags dry before throwing them away.
Awesome video! I love Gel Stain also! I just wanted to tell you the best part about your video is you included the SAFETY of disposing the rags correctly. I see so many videos about stain and rarely do they mention how dangerous they are when caution isnt taken. So many people don't read the safety warning on the label. These days lots of at home do-it-yourselfers that could literally burn their house down. I personally watched my rag smoke! It was laying down spread out in my van, however the floor is outdoor carpet and another Factor could be that I was using a dishcloth much thicker than a t-shirt rag . Sherwin-Williams gives me free empty metal cans. I put them in there with lots of water and seal the lid. Until I take them all to the waste plant. So "thumbs up" for an outstanding video! 💯
You may have just saved a life or a House.🔥
Thanks so much for sharing, you video is very straight forward and thanks for the tip at the end with drying the rags.
Perfect timing for my next project - Thanks!!
beautifully done. I just came back from the paint dept at home depot and all they could tell me about Gel stain was that it went on thicker. Thank U
Thank you for all the info. Very direct 👍
Thanks! Great video!
That is some really nice work. Very good video, will help for my next project. Thank You.
Thank you!
Great and informative video. Getting good info on gel stain in the store is difficult. 😥
I’m trying to lighten some wood. I’ve already stripped off the sealant and stain.
Can I apply several layers of a lighter gel stain to lighten the wood color? Thanks
This is a great and informative video and I’m so happy you included safety of disposal information. Thank you
Can you layer this with the wipe off method like with stain? I have oak, but from all the videos I've watched, they're going for multiple painted on coats vs multiple wipe on wipe off methods. The paint on is too dark, but the single wipe off just makes the color look more orange or red. Any advice would be great.
What do I do if my gel stain won’t dry and feels tacky?
I had my home built & had a contractor gel stain my fiberglass doors to look like wood . Unfortunately some has worn off near the door handle down to seeing the “steel”, maybe it’s a steel door 😊 can I fix this myself with gel stain & wood grain tool I have ? Not sure if he sealed it or not? Not on any other of the doors he did? Help! Thank you!
Hi - I have cabinets from the 80’s in great condition but bottom set are worn from the sun. I was told to use Restore a Finish which didn’t work & now the bottom cabinets look splotchy. What do I do to fix this? Do I use Gel stain with Urethane to save them? Is that safe to do over the restore a finish?
I have an exterior door that's made out of what I believe to be oak but there's 2 pieces at the bottom of the door that is made out of either white oak or something different and the pieces are horizontal instead of vertical like the rest of the door. Will gel stain be able to make the door one solid color? I wish there was a way for me to send you a picture of the door so you'd have a better understanding of what I'm dealing with. And there's raised trim around the window of the door that I have no ideal what it's made of.
Do you still need to use a pre stain conditioner? Thanks!
I saw this answer elsewhere- no. 👍
Is it necessary to use a pre-stain before applying the gel stain? Thank you.
No
Yo
Can I use the gel stain over stair railings that are already painted white?
Yes you can apply gel stain over paint. Just know it'll take a while to dry and you'll need to put a top coat over it. Gel stain, and any stain, needs a protective coating.
I gel stained a white painted mantel to make it look like wood. LOVE it!
Hi can this be used on laminate flooring 😊
noooo
?
Self ignite? How are you just going to mention some messed up property like that and then just nit go into any detail?
Because it's a commonly known factor regarding stain, lacquer thinners, mineral spirits, etc.? You don't make a pile of rags, as the chemicals involved are reacting to air exposure and gradually getting hotter. They can, but not necessarily will, self-ignite. We tossed our used rags in a five gallon bucket of water before throwing them away, it's not that serious.
@@Rasyvnos For neophytes it is a very alarming mention.
Just soak the rags with water. Or put in an airtight old paint can. No oxygen no fire.
WHAT ABOUT A FIBERGLASS DOOR?
I would guess yes because I stained the outside panel to my bathroom cabinet and it had to have been pure laminate glued on to look like wood. It took multiple coats, drying between, but years later still looks great! General Finishes Gel Stain is awesome. If you don't like it, use mineral spirits to wipe it off and then paint it.
I painted my white fiberglass door yesterday with Minwax gel stain, and it was a great success! It looks beautiful. I made sure to brush it on evenly in areas, wipe off my paint brush, brush loops and scribbles all over it the spot with the wiped-of brush, and swipe it straight over again to create that real wood look.
