- How did the Panerai Radiomir and Luminor watches become so iconic? Paneristi Josh Thanos is here to talk Panerai history from the pre-Vendome to the current era of Panerai. What is your favorite Panerai reference? Comment below!
The PAM 911 is the last of the Paneristi references from the brand. How did we get to this point? It all started in 1860 with Giovanni Panerai and his watchmaking school in Italy. Guido Panerai took over at the turn of the century and began making dive watches and other diving instruments for the Italian navy. At this point, the young brand wasn't making consumer watches, and even partnered with Rolex to make their dive watches.
By 1956, the brand was innovating dive watches with what became the iconic Luminor crown guard while eventually selling consumer watches out of a small boutique in Florence. So how did the company go from this small boutique to the iconic worldwide luxury watch brand that it is today? It all has to do with Sylvester Stallone, the Vendome family, a controversial move to Switzerland, and the still-active fan-curated website called panaristi.com. Tune in to get the full story!

Truly classic watches, I first fell in love with the brand when i was stationed in Naples and Rome. I am a Marine and combat diver(Force Recon) I appreciate the rich history of this brand as it's similar to the precepts of the Corps, I own the PAM423 and it is willed to my son already, lets hope he too will cherish this timeless classic. Cheers to all!
Thanks for doing this "classroom". Panerai can be a polarizing brand. I admire their history and would love to see the brand do well.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Josh is so much better when he is not goofy and not trying to have a personality bigger then his actually is.
He is both personas. Neither is an act. He's a likable guy.
M tbone, you dont know me bro!!! :)
@@joshthanos3552 still a fan my friend
I'll definitely be adding one to my collection someday. There's just something about them that always draws me in.
Nice, which reference would you choose?

The Pam 48 fits perfectly on my wrist.
I'm beginning to love this watch brand more and more. This will be my 3rd watch for my collection.
Great job Josh, even if you don't own a Panerai, its hard not to admire the brand. I've had my eye on the PAM 564 for a long time know after watching this I will buy it sooner or later. Thanks Josh!
Thanks so much for recording this summary of Panerai's brand history. As a complete newbie to Panerai and a new owner of the PAM 682 I found it really interesting. Cheers
PAM000 was gasp for air, stop my heart, love at first sight. I couldn’t get myself to pull the trigger until a year or two later - thinking that is a lot of money for a 2-hander. When I finally did I bought on the 112 (I) mainly because of the sandwich dial. Probably my favorite detail of the watch. The design and details are just unbelievably so well proportioned and spot on. Also I love winding it hearing and feeling the clicks. Yes These are the reasons why such a simple watch is so beautiful 😍
Hi. This is the first watch video I've watched on history of watches. I've been a watch enthusiast a long time, started getting into watch repair and servicing of my own watches, really enjoyed this video and learning history of a brand I never heard of. Thank you looking forward to more

Gorgeous watches Panerai 😍
Your best video Josh. The Pam 111 started all this craziness for me and I never sold it.
This has been highly informative and I learnt a lot too. My favorite bits were the Radiomir shape adapted from the Rolex pocket watch. Thank you for this Josh.
One of my favourites brands. Having been sick for some time im trying to catch up on content . This channel never disappoints. Bravo. I've still my 323 which I've kept for a long time. Love it to death. I think they have around 15 in house movements now. 8 and 10 day reserves and micro rotors, numerous complications and always beautifully finished pieces .
Great Video, many thanks.
Great overall history on Panerai. Nice job Josh.
thanks!
Thank you Josh. This is just what I need to know. Thinking about getting Pam 510 this year!
Just bought a Pam 104 and love it! Video is great!
boom! keep the panerai train rolling!
@@joshthanos3552 Thank you!
Great Job Josh, always been a fan of the trading desk but here you excelled you're self, I found your knowledge and story telling of Panerai fascinating. 1940s radiomir on the cards......👍UK
Sweet Thanks!
Thank you Josh, very interesting show. Keep them coming. 👍
Josh is awesome! Glad we sparked your interest, thank you for watching!

Nicely done Josh, I have a love/hate for Panerai. Today? Disappointing. Maybe in time, they will turn the corner. Maybe..... 😉 Good start to season three. Love the personal story regarding your PAM.
Brilliant video Josh. Reminds me of the old OJ videos. Fascinating brand. I would love to see more segments on panerai and here more stories like the Jamaica one. Best of luck from another paneristi in Dublin!
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions Craig!
All the way from Dublin!? Awesome!

Josh, it was superb show. Full of facts and interesting story. Hope we will see many other episodes on this level. I'm now curious is someone can make better classroom than Josh :)
Great video. I’m newer to the brand, and bought a 690 Radiomir. One of my favourite pieces.
love the 690!
Amazing video, I really enjoyed it! What was the PAM model # that you got from Jamaica? That was a pretty cool story, would love to see pictures of that before the restoration.
Hi Thanks for watching! its a PAM002 A serial
Excellent video. Well done Josh.
Also the set up is way better than the previous awkward chair.
The chair has many fans (with the exception of the awkward angle from season 2), but we're glad you like the current format better!

Great video! The history of Panerai is pretty unique. Love my PAM 616.

So interesting and cool
I have an SLC 425 and Luminor Marina 422 and love them! I liked what you said about traveling with 3 different watches, I do the same thing!
Thanks for the video. I'm thinking of getting a classic Radiomir. Hope they had made smaller case sizes more available.
Great episode Josh. Added you to Friendster, High5 and MySpace.

Thank you for the history that was great. Should develop a series for the brands you sale. As a customer gives us a better understanding about the brands and watches they make.

Thanks for a great video! I got my first Panerai yesterday (PAM380) I went for the classic one. I have been wanting one for some years but as a Rolex guy it took me some time to skip to another brand, but damn I like this. It is comfortable and though it is 45mm it sits really nice on my wrist. I have a feeling that my Rolexes will soon have some new friends coming over :)
Awesome, never new Panerai had such an interesting history. The brand is growing om me😀

Awesome video. Wonderful learning the history of the brand. Any suggestions on a first Panerai? I have a Rolex ceramic submariner date, Breitling Chrinomat Evolution, and a vintage Tudor Date-day. Any suggestions for fitting a Panerai in the collection? Thanks in advance, awesome job, and looking forward to the next video!
hey mark! email jthanos@govbergwatches.com
Mate, I will reach out. I am also a fan of Panerai and planning to get one soon. Would be great to have a chat before I get my first one
Hi, does anyone know when the First Submersibe was launched and what model was it? i've read online that it's the Slytech but i cant find enough sources to confirm this.
I have a Panerai Pam OO5 and l love it...awesome brand with great history also have a Rolex Sub.
Thanks! Which one gets more wrist time?

Panerai pam 005 gets more wrist time. I love it. I have a Omega seamaster 42m ceramic blue. Panerai most times then my Omega than Submariner. My next watch is the Steve McQueen Monaco blue calibre 11 the with left hand version. Hopefully get it on my birthday.

Panerai il meglio del meglio..
went onto watchbox and checked out Panerai stock, about 100+ pieces to be sold, this video makes sense now. last year I sold off my APROO and my Panerai, got the defy 21 el primero chrono, got money left in the watch bank and waiting to see what to put money in.
Panerai is a strong brand for us - but also does have an interesting history! What brand are you thinking of putting your next watch "investment" towards?

@@1916company nothing exciting yet, im still looking
Great video, Josh. I've been a fan of the brand since the late 90s. But for one reason or another, I still don't own one. The models I like are either too large for me, are missing some detail that a Panerai should have, or include something a Panerai shouldn't. So, I've focused on other brands over the years but always keep an eye out for that "perfect" Panerai (for me).
What are the elements of your perfect Panerai? Radiomir or Luminor? California or sandwich dial? Small seconds? Other complications?
--Team WatchBox
@@1916company My favorite model line has changed over the years. I first liked the Radiomir and would have gotten the PAM00062, with a 40mm case and Zenith movement, if it had a sandwich dial (a must!). The 42mm PAM00141 was another contender, with Zenith movement, but, again, no sandwich dial and I wasn't sure about the silver small seconds sub-dial. Then the 42mm PAM00338 came out, with sandwich dial and no date (preferred), but I wasn't sure about the rose gold hands over the standard (greenish) lum and titanium case. So, I started looking at the Luminor because I thought the OP I add to my collection should have that iconic crown guard. But most are too wide or thick for my wrist or have busy dials (PAM00688) or insufficient water resistance (PAM 00728). So, now I'm looking at the 42mm Radiomir 1940s and, in particular, the new PAM00933. What do you think?
What was the independent watch brand right below Anonimo at 5:38?

Great stuff - 338 Rad here
Good choice! Thanks for watching!
Hey, Josh, what do you think about Panerai's recent smaller sizes, the 42mm ones?
Historically, have they ever gone smaller than 44mm before?
i like the idea of smaller panerais but they take some getting used to in person
Do seiko watch history
Somebody fired a riffel with a Big calibre ....damn!🤙 make a video please 🤙🤙🤙
I own four Panerai.
I love panerai and this is a great video, but did you really just try to tell us that the exact same watchmaker making the same watch in Switzerland is going to make a better watch than they did in italy? I'm so confused.
im confused too! not sure what your question is.
Hmm, great vid, but why wasnt it a classroom video? i am missing the beautiful chair. Oh, oopsie, it was. Still no chair...
We are still negotiating with the Chair's agent for appearance rights fees. Hopefully the chair will be back in future episodes 😜
--Team WatchBox
Where's the chair gone?
Last we heard it's somewhere in Narnia. But that's just what we heard.

@@1916company haha love you guys
You're gonna leave us hanging after that build up of the Jamaica story? Let's see that watch
his first swiss watch was a panerai? what was his second, Patek Philippe?? lol
Someone own any Panerai in year 1950 ???
Panerai is killing themselves. Get back to tradition.
Screw these snap backs and 30m water resistance.
