  • Organizing my yarn stash took some time, but I finally found a great solution that works for me in our small one-bedroom apartment! I love to separate my yarn by material, gauge, and project so having these containers is a great way to do just that. How do you organize and store your yarn?

    If you are still looking to donate yarn, and this goes for anyone looking to destash, call your local schools. Art teachers love crafty donations. I donated a large portion of my stash, along with needles and hooks, to my kids' school this year, and they were able to teach the entire 6-8 grade classes how to knit and crochet this year.

      Love this! I’m definitely gonna remember that whenever I need to destash. Thanks!

      Many public libraries also have yarn craft-related clubs. Sadly, some schools don’t have art programs anymore, so libraries are a good fall-back option.

    Mine has to hide in office boxes so I use Ravelry's stash pages to easily be able to see and flip through my stash. As for donating I work for a knitting and crochet club who's goal is to donate blankets and shawls to those in need. Luckily we also work with the local thrift stores so any yarn donations to them work their way to us. In turn, we can then support other non-profits in our area.

      That’s awesome. I know a lot of people love to use Ravelry for their stash! And that is so cool! I love that idea to use yarn donations.

    I live in a 2 bed apartment in the uk. And l have a ottoman bed to put my stash in. Put my yarn in vacuum bags and store in my ottoman bed. And it save space in our little home. Like your little basket they are brilliant and fantastic idea. I’m knitting down my stash for 2023. And trying not to buy any wool for 2023.

      That’s a great idea as well! Thank you. Good luck with your stash! I know that can be a mighty goal but I’m sure it’ll be so rewarding once you meet it.

    I have been looking for storage solutions for a while but didn't think to ask myself what I wanted besides "in one place". I have started a Pinterest board to help me better visualize what I can do with the space I have, what aesthetic I want, accessibility, etc.

    I never considered using that wheelie bin for my yarn. I have the exact same kind but i use it for storing blankets/bedsheets. I bought a toy hammack to put my yarn in a corner thar i could just grab, but since i keep them in a duffle bag currently, it didnt occur to me that dust would get all over them

    • @woolnwords
      @woolnwords  Před rokem +2

      That’s a fun idea! I remember having a toy hammock growing up. I guess depending on how often you go through yarn, dust may or may not be a super huge issue but something to at least consider.

    I’ve found some amazing yarn at thrift stores, either a really nice brand or a large quantity or a combination of the two. One of the yarn shops near me also has a little yarn “lending library”

    Space bags! Large, clear, durable - I don't suck the air out unless I'm moving. Not the most aesthetic, but I have plenty of space to work with. I also have cats, and occasionally moths, so the space bags really protect the yarns while still letting me see the scope of my stash.

    I know in my area you can donate yarn to thrift stores. In fact I normally get my yarn second hand and most of the time at thrift stores.

    I know that a whole yr has gone by since you posted this but, have you ever thought of donating yarn to Senior Centers? They’re always looking for yarn. They usually make afghans & such & donate to different organizations. I hope you will let others know about this too. My Sr Ctr is always looking for yarn.

    The only problem with those under bed storage boxes is the handles are open so bugs even dust can get in there

    You can use cubes with inserts, but instead of using the inserts as drawers, turn them so the opening faces front. Not perfect, but may work for.some. That said, your underbed storage looks great fir you

  • @ant713m
    @ant713m Před 4 měsíci

    If any of your yarn is real wool I'm really surprised you used this method. Merino and expensive yarns need to be away from floors and where moths can get them. The storage handles have holes and things can crawl in and ruin your yarn. No problem if all acrylic, but if wool etc it'd a huge issue. I use tge really useful Boxes as they lock air tight.

    • @woolnwords
      @woolnwords  Před rokem

      Not sure exactly what yarn you mean, but a lot of hand dyed yarn comes in long skinny, twisted hanks that you then wind into balls or cakes. A lot of the hand dyed yarn that I have now, I got from DFW Fiber Fest last year from brands like Miss Babbs, Chaos Fiber, Madelinetosh, and Destination Yarn. Other than that, I have a lot of yarn from places like Joann or Michael’s. Hope that helps!

    If you have yarn that is acceptable for babies and feel like putting in the work, typically the new born station/children's section in hospital accepts blanket/plushie/maybe hat donations for children with more difficult illnesses for comfort or kids who just lost their parents etc do make sure to ask your local hospital though because they do have stricter regulations on what they are allowed to accept. Otherwise kindergartens for raw yarn or pet shelters for pet blankets are happy to accept donations in my experience
