Moss pole hack, a chatty repot + my thoughts on Youtube so far and my day job

  • I got a little candid in this video about work and life 😅 In today's video, I show you guys how I buy myself some time before I have to extend my moss poles, and also how I save space on my moss poles! I also quickly go over a fun hack that lets you keep your leaves looking nice and tidy.
    I also share my thoughts on CZcams so far, and I kinda talk about my day job, too.... I was off for almost three months while we moved across the country and while I was waiting for my professional license to be issued in this new province, so going back to work after such a long time off kinda wiped me out a bit! So I talk about the ups and downs of that. I understand that it is a privilege to be able to choose to work less than 40 hours a week, and I am grateful for that privilege and will enjoy it while I can.
    And I know I mentioned that I was not going to repot the verru into soil but ended up doing so anyway!! Sometimes I just do things, you know? 😅 I didn't want to repot it into more moss, because I absolutely HATE removing moss from roots, and I don't want to do that again to this plant when I've already done it here 😒
    Anywho, this is just a little fun repot and chat, so I hope you enjoyed it!

    Love your ‘bendy’ stem hack!! I love that you share your authentic self. I think you’re adorable as well as smart. Your attention to detail I’m sure makes you an awesome Hygenist. I had to retire early due to an injury a couple of years ago after working in optometry for 30 years and I completely understand your feeling of exhaustion at the end of the day. Yes optometry is medical but there is also a retail component that forces offices to be super efficient in order to keep each visit as profitable as possible all while taking care of each patient’s medical needs. I would be drained at the end of each day.

      Thank you so much for the kind comment, and your empathy as well! It sounds like you’ve had a long and rich career. I’m sorry your injury forced you to retire but hopefully retirement is treating you well! I appreciate that you understand the balancing act that we have to do as a member of a privately funded sector of healthcare. We want to take care of our patients but there’s always the business aspect of it too, and it can definitely be draining at the end of a long and physically demanding day. But I just try my best to count my blessings and I really enjoy making connections with my patients, so hopefully I still have a long career ahead of me! 😆

    I watched 3 of your videos in a row and really like your style and content. I was positively surprised when you started sharing your job and personal feelings. I was glad to find out someone else also ‘chose’ to work 3 days a week. I work in Finance in a stressful environment. I decided to switch to part-time working over a year ago. I have not been criticised by anyone for it but I feel guilty sometimes when I think about how other people cope with full-time work, or I feel conscious about telling people I chose to only work 3 days a week because I don’t want people to think I’m a ‘lightweight’. I agree with what you said, there is more to life than working all the time. I can cope with 5-days work but will just be less happy. Not sure why I started rambling on here. Guess I should just say you have done a good job wiith you tube videos😊

But at the end of the day I think I am just thankful that I have the opportunity right now to be able to cut back on my hours a bit! So I will enjoy it while I can 🥰 I hope you are enjoying your increased free time! 😁

    I just love your videos 😍 I have recently started working three days a week too. I'm a relief teacher (substitute) and I give 100 % each and every time. I never know what class I'll get, what year level is allocated to me or what subjects I'll teach until the last minute. It is full on, busy, ever changing and I rarely have a lesson off or get to eat my lunch properly 😅 But I love what I do and realised pretty quickly that, if I'm going to give the best of myself to others, I had better fill my other days with things that fill my heart 🩷🌿🩷

    I think its always hard when you compare yourself to how much others work when you think work is draining. I try to remind myself that just because others work more or maybe in a more stressful invironments, doesnt mean they dont struggle. And maybe they dont have the funds to work less or the cognitive capacity to reflect on that its their work draining them.
    I think its good to take care of yourself whenever you can and I would just be super happy that you are in a position to work parttime and dont let others pull you down!❤️🤗 They are probably in a bad place and need to compare themselves to others to make them feel better and feel justified.
    I hope youre having a great weekend and am looking forward to your next Video!!🥰🥳

    • @HerPlantStories
      @HerPlantStories  Před rokem +1

      Definitely! I am so thankful that I am now in a place where I can take it easy for a while and work part time. I worked 5-6 day weeks because I had to as well, not really because I want to, but such is life I guess! For now I am counting my blessings and enjoying it while I can. I just don’t think it’s very fair to compare apples to oranges, because we’re all specialists in our own fields and nobody will know the struggles that a person is facing. So what may be easy for someone might be difficult for another, too. I guess what I’m trying to say is everyone’s experience is valid, so I don’t see the need for comparison 😅 and I think I was just a bit testy when someone said that to me and I was already grumpy from a long and difficult stretch at work! 😅 anyway thank you for watching, I really appreciate it, and I appreciate your feedback as well!

I live in the US and completely get and agree with everything you said..It’s very similar here having to worry about production and the patient’s care and time. I just got a verrucosum on Etsy last week. It didn’t make it to well because of the heat. But I have it in a container trying to acclimate it. Any pointers for me? Yours looks beautiful! So many videos on CZcams say it’s a difficult plant but I’m up for the challenge!!

    • @HerPlantStories
      @HerPlantStories  Před rokem

      I think you’re off to a great start!! My mistake with my first verrucosum was repotting it right after receiving it in the mail and not giving it a high humidity environment. It died soon after lol!
      I’ve had a few Verrucs since that have done amazingly well though!
      I think the key is to not shock it right after shipment, to be gentle with the roots when repotting, and to only move it to room conditions once it develops a strong and expansive enough root system to support the rate of transpiration.
      It’s sensitive to burning as well, so light has to be bright but pulled back a bit. Once it has settled into its space, it’s actually very easy and straightforward to grow! Good luck!

    Sup Bekka! One question, what if after the top chop just stick it to soil right away without removing moss at the bottom? Like let the roots actually move into the soil by itself? Or will the moss hold too much water. TIA 👍🏽!

    • @HerPlantStories
      @HerPlantStories  Před rokem +2

      I've done that before and I don't really know why this happens but every time I've left the moss inside the pole intact, the plant just continues to root inside the pole and doesn't spread out into the soil!! Super frustrating. So I've just been loosening the roots from the bottom most part of the pole and planting them into soil to encourage the roots to go into the soil instead of staying within the pole.

    Very interesting moss pole hack video. I have a love-hate relationship with moss. I’ve switched to perlite prop boxes but after chemo I’m so sensitive to certain smells ( I know waa waa). Yes, I get the “haters” too! Yep, I requested cancer, folks.... The smell of freshly wet sphagnum moss makes me gag. If I leave it in a bowl in a room, leave the room and come back to the room that smell is in the room for what seems hours! Urghhh! I want to do what is best for my plants. Switched from the big box sphagnum to the Besgrow brand thinking it was my cheap moss, but no, just opened the more expensive stuff and the same thing happened. Sigh. Hurrah! You worked three days in a row! I’m proud of you! I can’t work one day in a row. It’s all relative and the 6 day woman should just get some empathy and STFU!

    • @HerPlantStories
      @HerPlantStories  Před rokem +1

      I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you continue to have a steady recovery! My husband hates the smell of freshly wet moss as well, so I can see how a highly sensitive sense of smell can find it really off putting! It's a good thing there are alternative methods now such as perlite, like you said. For the poles, I know some people use tree fern fiber and some people even fill their poles with the same aroid mix that's in their pot! Although that may or may not work for you depending on your growing environment, but could be worth a try?
      And yes, it's all relative, which is why I try not to compare my situation to someone else's and I wonder if maybe I took it the wrong way, but nonetheless her comment at the time made me feel like it invalidated my feelings, which still sucked 😅

Since cancer I’ve learned a lot about the true nature of friends and strangers. I’m a lot more self-reliant and have developed a thicker skin. I buy mine locally! I believe the brand is called WIllGro, and a lot of nurseries here carry it. I know a friend who buys her perlite from Amazon though, and hers was SUPER CHUNKY lol I think the brand she bought is called Mother Earth and it comes in this MASSIVE bag but when you calculate the cost per liter it's actually cheaper!

    It doesn't seem like you use any supplemental lighting. Is everything grown on au naturale?

      For now, yes! The shelves face a large south facing window and for the better part of the day they get a decent amount of light. It’s not ideal though. Normally I would use supplemental lighting and I will have to once the days get shorter, but the space between the shelves don’t really allow for that without running the risk of burning foliage. I am currently brainstorming for ways to install lights at the proper distances, but I think I’ll have to get new shelves. The shelves you see currently were never meant to be my permanent setup anyway 😆

    Wow! I had no idea that Canada did not provide dental care as part of their national health care program. That's really surprising and disappointing! I thought Canada was very progressive as far as health Care is concerned and good dental health is definitely part of good medical care. I know that some dental problems can exacerbate medical problems and literally ruin your health...

      there are dental programs in place for lower income families and certain socioeconomic groups, but for the most part, dental care is private in Canada. A lot of people do have coverage for it through their workplaces though, although coverage can vary!
