What On Earth Is Going On At Hull City? (2021 Update)

- In the space of three years, Hull City went from beating Liverpool and Manchester United at home in the Premier League, to losing 8-0 at Wigan Athletic and finishing bottom of the Championship.
It is a staggering decline, and one which I covered 18 months ago - but now Hull City are back in the Championship, back in the relegation zone, and rumoured to be on the verge of a takeover which would end over a decade of Allam rule.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens revisits what is going at the club that he supports, both on and off the pitch, and takes a look at the club's prospective new owner - Turkish entrepreneur Acun Ilicali. - Sport
Still hoping for a 'What on Earth is going on at Oldham Atheltic!' We're on the verge of being the first former Premier League club to fall into the non league and most people have no idea what is going on behind the scenes

Acun Ilicali has always been successful on whatever he ventured. Trust me, if he buys this team, it means that Hull City will be in the Premier League soon.
Time for me to put Turkish flags up in my room 😂
And he is a football enthusiast too

I hope you are right . The only time I saw my team arsenal was when hull was in prem lol. Sanchez scored twice including a free kick but I had to have a home ticket!

"Hull Tigers."
Sounds more like an American football team's name.
I'm not a big rugby fan but from what I remember at least one team has a similar type of name (Bristol Bears) though it's the only one I remember admittedly lol
@@massimilianopieroni9235 I think there's also a Leeds Rhinos but that could be for a different sport
@@uninspiringspoon9578 Rhinos are a Rugby League team, it's fairly common for Rugby teams to have a name like that, Hunstlet Hawks, Warrington Wolves, Castleford Tigers etc.
@@helvete983 True, but those were modern US inspired re-brandings for the Super League. Warrington were originally called Warrington Zingari Football Club. WIth Hull it's odd as they are known as the Tigers to fans, but somehow officially naming them as such is deemed beyond the pale to fans.
The Baseball team of Osaka is called "Osaka Tigers"
My grandfather was a big fan of them
You're a Hull City fan? I've been looking for a Hull City fan CZcamsr for so long and never knew you were! That's so cool!
Ahhh, the British humour... I really laughed hard with the Istanhull branding. Good one, mate!
Alfie, you're the first thing I think of when I think of Hull City now. Not even a joke.
One day I think there should be a HITC Sevens fan meet up at a match day up at 'Ull. I'd attend.
I've got a good feeling about Acun. He has genuine passion for football and wants to get us back in the prem. He knows it will take a lot of time and money but he said he is willing to invest and to improve however he can. To him, its passion and a business. For the Allams it's just business. I'm hoping the deals go through and I can't wait to see an increase in attendance hopefully. Also, good win tonight against Birmingham and a decent atmosphere which is not something I have said about the kcom since 2014 lol
I love the city of Kingston upon Hull. I went to university there, 93-96. I therefore have supported Hull City.
I supported Hull Kingston rovers even though I lived really close to the then ‘Hull Sharks’. The reason being, it just sounded daft!
As an outsider to Hull the city tag really made me and others perceive Hull as the important urban centre it is. ‘City’ gives the whole place a ‘lift’.
At Carlisle we think we are run badly; and we are but only through incompetence and an attitude suited to the 1950’s.
Great video (as ever).
Seriously well researched and brilliantly delivered. A highly objective and thorough piece of Citizen journalism. Very important work.
Thanks and well done.
All the best to Hull CITY!
YOUR A CITY AND KR SUPPORTER WOOHOO
You're definitely a true fan of sports, that's for sure.
@@davidsilverstein5079 yes it does seem it
Always interesting to hear from a hull fan on this issues we have faced, and the fact you have made videos on us is always good to see and hell you got a series out of it, fair play to you sir
As a Sunderland fan, a lot of this hits home but our previous owners were never as straight up malicious, just incompetent, thankfully things seem to be changing at the club now. Hopefully we'll be facing you again next season - in the championship
Am a Birmingham fan looking forward to visiting Hull for the 1st time tomorrow
Another great video, and great to see that things might finally be looking up for your team. I'm a Wolves fan, but I've always had a soft spot for Hull (both the football team and the city itself) - I'd love to see you back in the Prem again one day. I know what a positive effect it had on the city last time around. Will be keeping an eye out for the news about the takeover in mid December!
Brilliant video, love listening to you talk about something you’re passionate about and something that’s close to my heart - a badly run football club (Portsmouth fan)
Don’t we all just love a classic HITC7s 7 minute intro!!! No sarcasm
Any chance of a video on Coventry City? Would love to hear what you think about our journey from being relegated to League 2 to being in the Championship play off places and how Mark Robins has done it
Bought in "the hammer" in cm
Solved!!!!
Nice seeing Cov back in the Championship to be fair. Always felt like you belonged in the top divisions of football.
I think this is more of a negative concept, not achievement.
As much as I really don't like Hull City AFC (born in Cleethorpes so Mariners fan, obviously), I have a deep fondness for the City, having attended University there & I'd say they've suffered enough. No fans deserve owners like the Allams, that's for effing sure so while the plight of my dear Grimsby Town weighs far more heavily on me right now, it'd be nice to know our neighbours at least, might have something to look forward to again. Sincerely hope it works out for you
Thank you lol
As a Barnsley fan I went to Hull away by myself, I enjoyed going to a working mens club and talking to the locals, to be told 20 minutes in, that one of the lads I was talking to, was a Hull City AFC player back in the day :). Was a really enjoyable day despite going by myself (can't remember the result), really nice local folk, they were against Allam then
From a Newcastle fan, never give up hope👍
As soon as I saw the news Coyle was injured yesterday I knew you'd be happy so almost fitting this vid comes about now
Gotta love it when Alfie throws jabs at Michael! Great video as well, and man, I hope for your sake that Hull City can turn things around ASAP
Good job with your research on Acun. As a Turk, I wasn't expecting this much detail about him from a foreigner. Hopefully he'll do a good job with Hull City.
As a Southend fan i feel your pain.Hope you get your new owners.
Great video and having now won 2 games in a row I reckon we can pinch 2nd spot this season (and of course that is a bit of humour and sarcasm; both of which I loved in your article!). My fingers are very firmly crossed that Ilicali is indeed the saviour we have waited so long for! Taxi for Allam!
Alfie I'm begging you to make a "What on earth is going on at Panathinaikos" because we also have many issues with the owner and I think it would make a really interesting video
I love your channel nice to see a vid about my hometown club!
Your first video inspired me to do a Hull city save on FM21. The Allam's are gone, in fact the club has already been sold twice. We won both the league one and championship titles and sit fourth in the premier league after 14 games. Lewis-Potter has been the best player so far scoring 22 goals in league one and 33 in the championship.
As a Forest fan, you boys have my sympathy. To go from the PL to League 1 is a little soul crushing, especially with owners of Hull City’s “calibre.”
Having been to the Kc, it’s an amazing fanbase actually full of really nice people to watch a match with, very Yorkshire folk and very proud of it. Sad to see this has happened at Hull
Another great vid Alfie. Tbh I wasn’t much aware of anything about Hull until the ill fated 16-17 season. Watching Silva try to keep Hull up was like watching a man with weights on his ankles try to swim the Atlantic Ocean.
Honestly I just assume every owner of a football team are just incompetent farce (bar maybe Leicester).
And I too would like whatever the Irish Guy has been inhaling in mass quantities. Probably coke-cola
i always love your videos!
IstanHull is a sick name.
Great video mate. Hope everyone's doing good.
Been looking forward to this
I feel your pain. Fingers crossed for your new potential owner, and that he doesn't replicate what we had down here at Portsmouth - ie out of frying pan and into the fire...... Chin up!!
I’m not a Hull fan but I was watching the other video yesterday as I’m doing a Hull career mode
Watching this in feb 2022 and so happy to see the takeover complete and Hull relatively safe from relegation. 🧡
Acun'u burada göreceğimi hiç düşünmemiştim...
I live in Turkey and i witnessed Acun's investments and shows a lot throughout the years. And i can say that if acun buys or invests in something he is going to be successful. He is passionate about football. He is a fenerbahçe fan. He knows how business works and he had enough experience to know that he must be patient. He was a football reporter before he rise to the top. So he is aware of the footballer's mentality and what he must and mustn't for the team. (Sorry for my bad usage of words)
Love these types of videos mate. An 1860 munchen or Blackpool video would be great. They've both been through the mill in recent times. UTMP 🟠
yes totally agree on that! As a 1860 supporter u got the example of an investor that does what ever he wants on the one hand and nowadays a light at the end of the tunnel based on the current approach by the management and the coach.
@@aputzo just curious if you remember Daniel Borimirov playing for munchen 1860?

As a Dutchman I can say there was some trepidation at Fortuna as well. However they are very astute owners (The one still there). With smart recruitment of both players and staff with Fortuna being in dire financial and sporting position when they took over and now as you said they have been able to remain in the top flight and even recorded their top finish in the last century last season. Although that was mainly under his partner Gun. And then when he wanted to do a full take over they backed off due to Ilicali's plans.
What were his plans?
@@davidsilverstein5079 Main thing is that he wanted to be way too involved in the technical day to day of the club which the current board did not want. They wanted the technical side be run more by the actual football people. On the flip side he was prepared to put in a lot of money. Now that he has taken over Hull let's see. Can't be worse then the current ones.
Whilst the fit and proper owners tests leaves a lot to be desired, the little I know about the Turkish guy is that he does seem to have a genuine interest in football. For the sake of Hull I hope he turns out more to be like Radrizzani at Leeds rather than a leech like the Allams. It's criminal how a club can be held hostage like that, and one hopes in the future the EFL grow a set of balls (no pun intended) and actually implement harsher controls on who owns a club, with a provision to actually remove toxic owners like the Allams.
Those net worth sites are absolute nonsense. 100 million is pocket change to this guy considering the size of his business portfolio. And you have to ask yourself if you were only worth 100 million would you potentially gamble half of it on a football club outside of the Premier league. The Championship can be a money pit with Derby being a prime example of how much money, legally gotten or illegally gotten can be lost on a failed gamble to win promotion.
Best of luck though Alfie, hope you get an early Christmas present.
His Name is Acun Ilicali...
And the name of the stadium will also change...
I prophesy... Exxen Stadium or Exxen Park!
@Helvete The fit & proper owners' tests in the Australian A-League are worse, trust me. Just ask former fans of the now-defunct Gold Coast United. How Football Australia could let a shameless con-man like (mining magnate & all-round wankstain) Clive Palmer own a club (which he basically ran into the ground in a couple of seasons) beggars belief...
Fingers crossed, I remember playing Football Manager 10 years ago and Hull were a stable mid-table team in most my saves, hope to see them back there!
Acun is a football crazy guy. I’ve no doubt he’s carry the team to premier league in 3-5 years. Can’t promise he’d bankrupt the team in PL right away, but he will get you there.
A lot can change in two months 🇹🇷
Relying on an Irish guy prediction is like relying on a wheelchair bound grandma to win the 100m sprint at the Olympics. It’s not impossible but quite a few outrageous things would have to happen
Every prediction show he does strikes fear into the heart of every football fan and the hope that he doesn't predict your team to do well.
I mean he's the only one who can predict 9-0 german to lichtenstein
@@Dz73zxxx He Can also predict thing such as Derby 2nd

Hi Alfie! Great video and hopefully the Allams leave Hull and you get your club back!
An idea I suggest for a long form video would be the demise of the Republic of Ireland national team and the national association (especially the finances) as a result of John Delaney. A lot of info on this got can be got from the book champagne football. Its incredible and not talked about outside Ireland. It has basically bankrupted the FAI.
solidarity from this Arsenal fan. as you've touched on in your Arsenal vids, the Kroenkes aren't much to write home about. sucks to see any formerly great club in dire straits - wish the best for Hull City, you and their other fans
Great Video. Acuns name is pronounced like ah-june btw. He had also some involvment in the Özil deal to Fenerbahçe.
I feel for ya mate, been through similar as a blackburn fan, footballs a strange game and even though it feels like everything is hopeless at Hull , things can always turn around
The mood amongst blackburn fans prior to this season was universal dismay, no proven goalscorer , a young squad and paper thin depth.
Yet we find ourselves 4th with a south American superstar being the 2nd top goalscorer in the league
Swings and roundabouts comes to mind
Hey Alfie, any chance we can get a video on FK Slutsk? They're the Belarusian Football club that fans started supporting around March of 2020 when the world shut down due to the pandemic. The Belarus Premier League was the most prestigious from 1 out of 4 or 5 professional football leagues in the world that didn't shut down.
If you've never heard of FK Slutsk, they have fans in most English speaking parts of the world (mainly due to their humorous name) and the story of how their owner went to jail, and how it was their quarantined international fanbase who kept the club afloat, is very special, and would make for a great video!!
It reminds me of how Eibar was able to stay in La Liga due to financial rules for being too small with 3000 investors from 41 different countries
Would love to see a video on Fair Game, Alfie. They'd probably be open to interviews

As a fellow hull city fan think these another update on our beloved club maybe after this summer’s transfer as we are doing well in my opinion
I love it. Do one on Sacramento republic because they’re a mess rn!
Can you do a video on what’s going on in the Turkish Super Lig. The big three clubs are all struggling this season and are below the top 3
Looks interesting, mind you atm it's Trabzon leading, but the 3 traditional powers -as of yet- aren't out of it by any means. It will be interesting to see how it develops. Their domination has been certainly challenged in reason times.
Need to do a redo of derby as well 😭
Funny how I'm attending uni of hull, me living 10 minutes away from the stadium and playing for hull city's u23s.
Another Idea: "What on Earth is going on at Austria Wien". In Short: 24 national championships (last 2013), a 40+ million construction project including a new stadium, regression in play, rumoured 70+ million of debts ... a sudden (and shady) sponsoring deal who (surprise) did not pay and now a constant fear of losing the license after being in the level of austrian football for 100+ years.
I am looking forward what acun will do in hull, if they are good and maybe playing in the prem one day, whole turkey and all turkish people all over europe will behin supporting them
Montréal Impact or as they rebranded to Club de Foot de Montréal, should be a video! Terrible owner, alienation of the fans/ultras, very chaotic ownership
“Life’s never dull in Hull” said P&O Ferries.
One of these for Club Olimpia would be great; one of the all time greatest south american clubs, now close to relegation.
As a Fenerbahce fan now i have a new team because of Acun. We will go to premier league i am sure . LETS GO HULL 🧡🧡.

Alfie struggled to mention Hull City much these past few videos, so he made another full video about them to balance the scales
It's sad to see this happening to a club that means everything to Alfie - a genuine and extremely knowledgeable football fan.
Hopefully the Allams' days are numbered.
The Allams will go eventually. Mike Ashley finally went so who knows?

Video idea: Best player for each number on their shirts.
Your What-on-earth-series could be extended by the downfall of Grêmio Proto Alegre. Only a few years back they won both the Serie A and the Copa, now they are going down to Serie B. Concerning the squad and the large support the club enjoys in in Rio Grande do Sul thats quite impressive to see. Looking at Cruzeiro, Palmeiras or their local rivals Internacional they are not the only ones falling victim to the close competition in Brazil. But maybe there is more to it. Would appreciate one of your deep dives. :)
Good friend Alfie, your beloved Hull City is one of my favourite clubs ever but the club must move on from the regime of Allam sir and be taken over by a latest regime to make this one of the smallest clubs in your history to be progressing well!!!
Favourite team to manage on FM. Lewis Potter and Greaves top lads.
and now Hull have won two games on the trot. What is going on at Hull city. I might just become a Hull fan, or maybe not. LOL
I stopped going when they changed the badge
Sad for you but Hull has always been a club, bouncing between the second, third, and fourth tiers of English Football except for the period between 2008-2018. To see clubs like Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton and Ipswich in League 1, mostly because of mismanagement, is for me still far more strange
Sadly teams feel forced to gamble to try get that premier league spot. Promotion and survival can mean 400+ million over 2 years. That's why you see teams like Wednesday and Derby break the rules to try and get out of the division.
The Championship is one of the hardest divisions to get out of, you not only have to compete with stick FFP rules, much lower standards, but the parachute payments from relegated EPL teams make for an uneven playing field too.
What’s strange is a city the size of hull with a huge population in East Yorkshire has not been tapped into… ever, the only reason they have bounced between the lower end of the leagues is due to a lottery of poor owners.
@@Kris_1708 That's so true - most people I know in that part of the world tend to support Leeds even though it is well over 60 miles away, as East Yorkshire has never had a successful football team. It's a real shame!
@@iamjoestafford I remember growing up in Leeds in the 80's Hull K R were pretty big as a Rugby team and probably took away a lot of potential support.

Hull City AFC is the very thing that the 50+1 rule blocks out. Supporters don't want financers to do dumb shit? Just voting against it will stop it. The English FA really should start looking into 50+1...
