  • This Roman Market town is just minutes away from beautiful countryside and picturesque Cotswold villages.
Cirencester, known as the "Capital Of The Cotswolds", is a historic Roman market town in the heart of the Cotswolds. Cirencester lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswolds.
The Romans invaded England in 43 AD. The Celtic tribe in this area, the Dobunni put up little resistance. Nevertheless, the Romans built a fort on the site of Cirencester. The Roman name for the town was Corinium, which is thought to have been associated with the ancient British tribe of the Dobunni.
A thriving wool industry contributed to the town’s growth and by the late 2nd century Corinium was the second-largest city in Britain. The Saxons captured the town in 577 and in Saxon times the name of the town was Cirrenceastre or Cyrneceastre.
In February 1643, during the Civil War, Royalists and Parliamentarians clashed in the streets of Cirencester with 300 killed.
Cirencester's market square is dominated by the cathedral-like Parish Church of St. John Baptist (one of the largest in England). The large south porch has an impressive fan vaulting that was built in about 1490.
Cirencester today is primarily an agricultural and tourist centre.

Not only is the architecture beautiful, I love the scale of the buildings-not overwhelming as can be in the USA.

Cirencester is a pretty town with a strong old character. We imagine very well the Saxons armed to the teeth invading this city. The church is very beautiful too.
The houses are magnificent for those who love the past like me.
Pretty little passages too, full of old-fashioned charm.
    A place to visit quietly.
    Thanks Kevin.

MMMMmm what a wonderful surprise to wake up to! I agree with many of the comments, especially the alleyways at the end. And of course the church! I love churches like these and they seem so plentiful in the Cotswolds. So today I imagined myself window shopping through all these quaint and wonderful looking shops and cafes ! With so many giant malls here (which hold little or no appeal to me ) this was so much fun and so quaint. The church bells ? not sure that's what they were but gosh they sounded lovely and a nice surprise! Thank you for all the additional information / historical facts you included Kevin! One , likely dumb question, I've notice different videos you'll say a "Grade 1" or a " Grade 11". and wondered what that means. Again, all that brick and the age....wow, it is so amazing! Thank you kind sir for taking us 'away' to magical places! Be well ! ~~~Jo💞

Thank you for your lovely comment and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. Grade I or Grace II ratings are given to buildings in the UK based on their historical significance. A Grade 1 listed building, like the church in the video, is considered to be of 'exceptional interest' and has architectural or historical importance. Grade 1 Listed buildings are at the top of the list for protection and preservation. It is also rare to find a Grade 1 listed building compared to a Grade 2. A Grade 2 listed building is of 'special interest', the building has particular historic and/or architectural significance and is subject to regulations that protect its unique character.
Yes, that was indeed the church bells. Thanks again Jo.
