I miss my 99 r6, Yamaha was the game changer in the late 90's. R1 still looks better then the new ones

I still own a 2000 (same as 2001), despite riding newer ones! I have a race-spec overbored high compression engine high lift cams with new springs, lightened balanced crank, and Keihin race carbs... puts out about another 35 rwhp than stock. I put on 2002 gold spot brake calipers for less brake fade, and a brembo 2008 R1 master cylinder for better feel... lots of other mods, Ohlins shock, re-built Race-Tech shocks, steering damper; Marchesini lightweight rims. Plus a bunch more I will not mention. This bike rocks, puts out more power than up to the 2014 R1s. It is raw, and fun! I love this bike, exceptionally light about 181 kg fully fuelled which is less than most 600 sport bikes. Mine is like riding a scalded Tiger and drops into a turn at the speed of thought. And bloody cheap for the performance, plus spare race parts are now really cheap if you want to put on upgrades. In short, if you want to pay 500% more for that last 1% performance, go ahead... if you want 99% of the performance for cheap get the 1st or 2nd gen R1. Most guys are still sorry they sold theirs!

JimWakable when I have the money I'm gonna buy a new r1 for everyday use and mod my 2001 like yours for the weekends. never gonna sell the bike out of all the ones I've owned over the years I love this one the most there's something special about them!

Still have it... slowly upgrading bits and pieces but she still rides like a rabbit. Upgrading clutch, putting on a good used OEM 2002 swingarm and rear brake to save a pound and make it a bit stiffer... and also putting on a non-EFI quickshifter. Finally, got an entire 2001 Champion Edition tank and fairings to swap on. Most beautiful Yamaha sprotbike scheme there was on the R1. Everything for well under $800 try that on your 2015! Quite happy and still a keeper.

Too bad that most early R1s & R6s develop cracks in the bores around 30k mls/50k km, later ones have weak gearbox and seals on the water/oil pumps and crossplane ones destroy crankshafts. Fun bikes to ride, unfortunately with soft engines

I bought a 2001 this year! 2022 July! Been without a motorcycle over 20 plus years ,raised kids, & tried to keep my wife happy! Now older kids older etc… I had to ride again! (Of course watching when & where I ride to avoid negligent drivers)! These bikes are insanely fast & can be dangerous! The only thing I’d change in my bike is the exhaust sound! Love my R1 !!!!!

my best friend in high school back in like 2007 had an 01 r1. That thing was a beautiful machine, and I think it is the reason I still like yamahas the most out of the big 4.

Aye, there's a few. My father has a 2001 model 2 with only 1500 miles on it, barely ran in. Complete sacrilege, scary bike with some insane power. Love it.

I still think the ZXR750 was the bike to get. It was not faster nor better than the Fireblade, but it had the looks and amazing suspension that made out of it a confidence machine.

    Oh I miss this bike:""((
Four years of ownership, or should I say partnership. Loved her to bits, so much so I sold the car and rode her every day. Even treated her to an Öhlins shock, Racetech fork kit, braided front lines. Never once did she fail me...though she often used to give me a fright, but only to remind me who was really the boss;)
So, may the lowlife fuckers that stole her rot in bike thief hell....pieces of shit!

This bike if tuned properly with a stater adjustment also had a secret gear power inbetween the rpms the clutch wasnt even necessary in someinstances with the exup ! again most average riders would never get her off like that she could take a hard pounding and liked it !
