Well I get the phone call - umm yeah my Jeep died ... where is is ? the grocery store down the road..... great. Here is the trouble shooting I did to get it goin again :) - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Thank you! Just had to diagnose my Jeep for a no start no spark and your page helped so much. 1 coil later and she's back in business! As a matter of fact your page has helped through my entire restoration! Thanks again!
Thanks Dave. I actually had my 7 year old and 13 granddaughters helping with sanding and painting on my YJ. Also had the 13 year old mig welding. I had to bribe her. I told her boys like girls that can fix cars. I will show her this. She will love it. 😃
Brother you are a true mentor ! They truly can put the boys in their place when they know so much more than the idiot male teenagers hahahaha
I know I'm getting old, but it seems very few care about cars anymore. That's why self driving cars are what they want. They can stare at their smart phones all the way. However, they can do things with a smart phone (except talk on one) that I still can't figure out. Cars were our ticket to freedom and fun. We bought older ones and worked on them after school for Friday and Saturday nights. My buddy used to go to the junk yard and buy 327's and 396's to swap in and out of his Camaro just for fun. Those days are long gone.
Saddlebag Preacher I'm 21 and I can't stand my generation
NO doubt. While I can appreciate the advantage of CZcams I also remember growing up on a farm looking at a repair manual for my 68 Chevy pickup trying to figure out what points were LOL We had to be self sufficient - go talk to someone that knew something ;) trial and error - but we learned and retained that information. I remember the manuals I used with the greasy fingerprints on all the pages :) Many ( not just young - but most young folks ) are full of addictions - cell phone, video games, netflix - and it just makes a person dumb. People cant read a map and dont know street names, they couldnt drive across their own town without GPS. Yes I agree self driving cars would be perfect for folks like that ....... until the network went down and they were lost. Truly like the movie Wall-E hahahah
I'm 39 years old, and I agree with you! Even though I grew up with videos games, computers, and the beginning of the Internet (AOL), I always had a love for cars and engines. I got my drivers license in 1995 and bought a total, POS, 1984 Honda CRX HF that was a constant pain in the ass. I spent more time working on it than driving it. It was a lot of a fun and I learned so much. Whenever I have a problem with my Jeep, I always have a good idea of what the problem is because of all the time I spent diagnosing my cars when I was younger.
I'm glad I had the desire to work on my car instead of playing mindless videos games and wasting time on the Internet. I do appreciate CZcams and the modern conveniences we have today, but still know how to read a map, and have common sense looking for a place without depending on GPS. Hell, I delivered pizza without GPS in the 90's! Ha Ha!
I'm a college kid and I couldn't agree more. I take more pride in my 25 year old YJ than my friends do in their BMWs, brand new Hondas, etc. Kids these days just don't respect vehicles with leasing and the trend of driving a car for 2 years and then upgrading. I love wrenching on my Jeep because it's always satisfying to see the result.
Glad to see the YJ still kicking! Loved that restoration series, would love to see more YJ videos
Proud of you !
Most people are too busy living paycheck to paycheck they don’t have extra time or money put away for any inconveniences!
As a PARENT Myself I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND 💯👍💯👍
I gave my 15yr old my Nova only to face the same situations. Oh well it's on him. Keep Up The Great Video & Work. 💪💯💪💯
Love your attitude! got the same problem, replaced the crank sensor about 2 yrs back. I'll try that first and then the coil. on another note, my stepson turned into a good wrench out of necessity sand the grandkids are doing the same. can't say I taught em much, just if you're poor you better get to wrenching or walking 😅
Love your videos, Dave! Keep 'em comin'.
My Grandson's 1990 YJ also quit while he was driving also. It has fuel and spark so I will start checking the things you tried. Thanks for the information.
This has been the most entertaining and informative video I could’ve found. Looks like I ran into the same issue on my 93 YJ. Thank you for your input, and smack your son a bit. Happy new year!
Thank you for the video Dave. Loved seeing the YJ. The boy will come along one day. Sometimes it’s easier to get dad to fix it. Hopefully he will share your love for it one day like all your loyal fans do.
Peter, Peter, Peter - I think all hope is lost on that one :) Thanks for the kind words bro !
This was exactly what was wrong with my son's yj. He changed those parts out and it started right up. Thank you!
Dave, your videos are awesome sir. I followed the entire YJ rebuild the same time I purchased mine. I had to replace the capacitors in my PCM in the middle of winter last year, which was a blast. Never fear! There are some millennial children that know how to fix and diagnose auto issues (and life ones as well)! I don't know how many people I've ended up helping with the Jeep just because most people are ignorant and neglectful. I'm also one of the rare animals that works at an Autozone that actually knows what a automobile is. Haha! I'll keep turning wrenches!
You rock Zack !!!! Years and years ago I too was a zoner :) I was a store manager in one of the ghetto parts of town. We actually had the drugstore next door robbed at gunpoint and the sweet ( very attractive ) manager there - Miss Luster _ was almost shot in the head except the crappy gun jammed - whew. There are some guys in the zone that are awesome ...... just not at my local store hahaha
Need help I am pretty mechanical. I have loss of spark in cold weather. Soon as temp warms up spark is back. Like u I replaced the crankshaft sensor first. Would like to test coil and pik up coil. But symptom is sporadic. Nothing worse then a no start at 5 am and jeep is loaded with my deer hunting gear. Thanks and your videos have been a wealth of knowledge
Yeah dad I have had the same experience with my young sons. The y have grown now and can teach me. Have faith, the grow up inspite of us.
Great video - thanks for sharing. Had the same issue on my YJ!
Loved the video and the cynical comments. I too have a son that only calls when he's stranded. I just bought a 1989 YJ and appreciate the ease and clarity of your videos. Thanks for posting. Crank on brother!!!
Thanks !
I would keep up the maintenance on it . If it were mine . Great videos man . Keep it up .
Some of us would love that old YJ to spoil!
I hear ya - probably up for sale soon ..... not running or the clutch out .... rear end run dry - hahahahaha
Up for sale yet
I want all the yjs!
I glad I saw this video before I went to bed. My YJ is doing the same thing so I am gonna swap out my coil & hopefully is starts. Thanks Davids!
Sorry yours is being difficult - keep me informed :)
Did it start
Just picked up a 94 YJ. Over all it needs so TLC and I'm planning on it being a project build. First thing is to get it running. SO far someone hacked the hell out of the engine electrical system (probably re-spliced 20 wires so far) the Engine shut down relay wasn't even working, after some tracing of wiring the ECM wasn't getting ACC power (the idiots cut the wire going to it) and changing out the crankshaft sensor (they said he replaced it, yea and for some reason spliced the old connector pigtail on it. Might have been the wrong one). Looked and found 2 of 4 injector connectors had wires cut just above the connectors. I'm telling ya any more wires mangled I'm just going to replace the whole engine harness! Why am I doing all this? Simple "It's a JEEP THING!" Keep posting your great honest videos! I'm doing my own YT series on the build to share and laugh at later when I finally finish the build (like you truly ever finish a Jeep Build)!
Hey there love your videos! Got my jeep a few months ago and have been restoring it slowly with the help of your videos and youtube, but I've been having one big issue. It cranks over and starts sometimes and runs normal for a while but dies while on a test drive almost all the time. I've replaced the plugs, distributor cap and wires, crank sensor, alternator, battery, fuel filter and the capacitors on the computer. Just not sure what else it can be. The check engine light comes on then goes off.
Thank you!
Great to have you back! I know you've been busy with the remodel but we all she have missed you. I know what you're saying about the kids... Mine is the same way. Her driver's side window regulator broke...OK.. No big deal l bought a new one and put it in....l purposely left all of the greasy fingerlings on the glass just to see how long it would take for her to have the initiative to clean them off.... Well after over 3 weeks l couldn't take it any longer and had to make her clean it.... You would have thought I'd asked her to donate a kidney from the reaction....l said l bought it and installed it and all l wanted was for you to take 2 seconds to clean the window. Damn it take some pride in your belongings... typical she had to stop looking at her phone in order to do it and we all know that's the end of the world.
OMG - same exact thing here LOL
It is worrying that so many young people don’t know which end of a screwdriver is the business end. GREAT to see a Jeep video from you though.
Thanks Mike ! I have a few more coming up - in fact this Jeep is in another one LOL
My 92 YJ has this exact same issue that started a few months ago. I’ve troubleshot everything and was hoping I would find something in your video to help me. Unfortunately the ignition coil was the second thing I replaced. I have a spare computer, I have check engine light working, I have new sensors, I have new everything. Like an idiot I threw parts at it and finally found I did not have any 12V power at the ignition call or at the fuel injectors. Next thing is to get a new harness I guess as I believe that possibly have an issue in my wire harness. I gave up on working on it a few months ago and may come back to in the spring when the weather is nice. LOL. Keep the videos coming love watching them!
Does sound possibly like a wiring issue - was it running then suddenly quit ?
Check the Auto Shutdown Relay
I have literally changed every fuse, replaced every relay, new ignition coil, new battery, new starter, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, and on and on and on. I’ve thrown almost every part I can at it, but I really think it’s a problem within the wire harness itself at this point. When it warms up and I have some help I’m going to start checking continuity. At one point in trying to start the vehicle some smoke was coming from one of the wires near the battery and relay box under the hood that I had assumed I had found in the harness and cut out and replaced. This wire led to the fuel injectors. I’m wondering if this somehow shorted out something else. If I can get a hold of a wire harness at a decent price I may just replace the entire harness to see if that fixes the issue. It actually began randomly stalling while driving down the road and slowly grew worse until it just would not start at all. RPMs would drop drastically sometimes would kill the engine sometimes would rebound back up while driving. Was not under a load, on a hill, etc. but was completely random. This is the only thing that I can find that happened out of the ordinary leading up to this issue.
You made this video 5 yrs ago , thank you for your trouble. Im learning.
Question for Dave or anyone that might know. I've owned my 91 yj for 30 yrs and it has always been reliable. It over heated this past week and I replaced the water pump. Now, it starts (when its cold) and runs well for 5 mins then dies. Then won't start until I leave it alone for a while. What do you think it could be. Being it runs, its getting spark (I replaced the coil). What would be affected by it overheating like this?
Thanks
Ed
Dave, love the videos. I have a 2000wrangler 6 cal same problem as yours hard to start replaced the fuel pump, coil and plugs --they needed to be changed. I still have a hard time starting we put a diagnostic on it and got one code d1. Any idea what that is. Thanks larry
Always love to see you wrenching on the yjs. Your videos have been helpful in the past for sure. I failed to see the real troubleshooting aspect of this video though. Seemed to me like you loaded up the parts cannon a little quickly. Crank sensor, PCM and coil. For those who don't have the benefit of diagnostics experience, I fear they'll watch this video and think troubleshooting consists of changing parts until the problem is solved. Obviously, you are approaching it with your previous knowledge and you narrowed it down. But, true troubleshooting means finding the problem BEFORE heading to the parts store.
I hear what you are saying - most people dont have OBD1 scanners and even if they did the information is spotty at best. I went with probabilities - 1) crank sensor - 80% of the time usually the problem. 2) ECM - had a rebuilt one from a guy on ebay ... as the ecm controls EVERYTHING on these AMC creations my second guess 3) Coil - hardly ever the problem and rarely have I had to replace them. Im unsure what "troubleshooting " you would suggest before going to the parts store ( I suggest Amazon as in the beginning of this description for about 1/4 of the price of an Auto zone ) - I checked fuel as stated by pressing the schrader valve and gas sprayed out - eliminated that , then determined no spark.
If I can buy a crank sensor and coil from Amazon for 27.28 ( and I would suggest everyone has a used ECM from Ebay or a boneyard just in case ) and have a spare if it isnt that component - why would I spend a ton of time trying ohm out some coil or fool with a greasy crank sensor that both can be changed out in less than 20 minutes - really ? Yes I suggest everyone has a spare coil, crank sensor ecm if they can get a good price on one and possibly a cap and rotor.
I have a question about my 2001 jeep Cherokee...the water temp gauge goes to the red line (250) for about three minutes.....then the water temp drop quickly.... goes back to 210.... do have any idea what my problem could be....its not leaking water...it was, but now is not....ive filled the radiator and overflow..
They were not low...
I had a no start issue. I checked everything back to the coil.
Still wouldn't start.
So I delved deep into the internet.
The next thing to check is the ASD relay.
Turns out that one of the connections had slipped out of the PDC and was no longer in contact with the ASD relay.
Took the bottom cover off of my PDC and pushed the wire back on.
Boom starts right up.
Mines got some serious issue
I’d enjoy your thought on what could be the problem
Had cylinder and switch replaced and it fixed the shut off problem I was having but now I’ve got no power turning the key so I pulled the cylinder it’s working properly pulled the switch and it’s got 11 volts to the red power wire
But when I cross it with the yellow ignition wire or the green gauge wire it reads -1 tried by passing everything but hot wiring the auto shut down fuel pump relays and the ignition fuse and got nothing
(Turning ignition cylinder no lights would come on
Jiggled the wires and the fan kicked on in accessory position for a second but nothing else worked
My brother in law is 38 (I just turned 36). He never checked the oil in any car he had. My brother (also 38 years old) told me a couple years back that his power steering pump must be going out. Come to find out, he only had 5 lbs of air in each tire. I just replaced the distributor rotor in my wife's 1995 Jeep YJ today when I saw your video as recommended by CZcams. This after changing out the ignition coil, as the ohms on the high side was reading 9.34k ohms. I understand the tolerance should be about 10K ohms or more.
I just didn't like how the engine was sounding, so instead of trying to drive it as is, I decided to just buy a new distributor rotor. My wife does all the joy riding, and I do all the mechanic work. She couldn't even put the soft top back on by herself. My soon to be five year old son continues his question of, "Daddy, you working on the Jeep again?" I bought the 95 Jeep YJ February 2019, having to fix a lot of problems that the previous owner, a teenager, had let build up in less than a year of owning it.
My son crashed my TJ. But he had to buy his next car with his own money. Gained an appreciation for taking care for things you have to sacrifice to get. And, thanks for the video, I think the crank sensor is the problem with my YJ.
Dave, it’s really a shame. You put all that hard work into restoring the jeep, and your son doesn’t take care of it. I would be very proud to be able to drive a vehicle my father built from the ground up and I would take excellent care of it knowing all the work he had put into it.
I have an old 1990 YJ and it will not turn over I started by changing out the start switch under the dash
then changed out ignition switch starter relay and starter the started was good but old . the only thing I can think of at this point is the computer ? not sure just where to go from here , on this year there is nothing more to check i don't think any way Can you give me any ideas ???
any ideas on how to fix this issue? i got a 94 with a basically new crankshaft position sensor( 3months old maby?) new ignition coil, new spark plugs and wires and im getting power to the coil and sensors. cant figure it out and im sure its part of the ignition system and not fuel or anything like that
My condolences...
Ah well - soon Im charging rent LOL
Nice vid and good info. Miss that YJ!
Me too :)
my jeep is in the shop right now for the exact same issue... engine would randomly shut off and would take up to 15 minutes worth of attempts to get it started back up again. apparently it was the ignition coil too
We have a '92 Wrangler that our son is using and this sounds like us. He drives it until it dies and then...here come the calls. Hopefully this will work to get it back running.
My nephew is the same way. He was given a car and he just runs it into the ground. No maintenance what so ever. I wasn't that way, but I guess it's just the way it is these days. Good to see back at the mechanics side of things.
Thanks Wyatt !!!!
This was great! I have a 1990 with the 2.5 four cylinder. My mechanic loves to work on my jeep and attempt to rob me... I am trying though!! Cool video thanx!!👍🍔
Keep turnin wrenches Scott - hahaha sorry couldnt resist :) You can do it !!!!
Hey Dave have 99 xj power to everything won't start checked crank sensor changed ignition Got no spark But gas and alt gauge won't move !!! When they do it starts ???? No gauge no start
I have. 98 Wrangler 2.5 ran codes came back cylinder 4 misfire. Changed cam and crank sensor, no change. Is worse at operating temp. Any ideas
Hello.
I have a YJ 1994, 4L, 6 cylinders.
The jeep wont start.
When I open the ignition switch it activates check engine and all the lights at the dash work fine. The gasoline pump does work with good pressure, we also have good spark, batery is also good, fuse are ok.
My mechanic replaced the starter coil, also changed the capacitor modules at the computer and it still won't start.
The mechanic told me that after replacing the capacitor modules and he try to start the jeep the capacitors were burnt once again.
Do you have any suggestions to get it started?
Thanks.
My YJ is just clicking when I turn the key, any advice?
Happen to me yesterday , my jeep yj 91, fail i get crazy to know what happen and the answer was simple, the crank sensor was lose!
I have an 88 jeep wrangler 2.5 4cyl and the problem it starts but after it warms up about 30 min. It will shut down.
No electical no lights no turning over.
After a while it will start again.
Any suggestion.
Anyone
Im 20 and I have had a few different jeeps since I was 15. never brought any of them to a mechanic, just got online and learned how to fix it myself. Just picked up a 98 XJ for $700 and I have been wrenching on it for the past few months fixing it up. Just tell people that i'm your son! haha
You sir are truly an inspiration and maybe ..... just maybe.... there are just enough of guys and girls like you to keep the race from extinction- hahahaha .... son . LOL
I feel the frustration, same here 😭 😄. I remember you working hard on this thing, in past videos; used them for help/reference when I was rebuilding my YJ. We have a" you get one" policy in the house, "This is the last one you get, if you let it fall apart, the next one is on you."
... is it for sale, and how much? 😎 I'll come down from Louisville to get it.
Ill let you know LOL
I have the same policy - yet they still are clueless ;)
Sad to hear it doesn't start. But hell yeah!! Another jeep vid!!
Thanks Francisco !!!
My 89 yj starter wont bump. If I turn key to on and short the starter with screwdriver it starts. But with key nothing
I had my 91 yj quit running while I was driving it. Turned out the dizzy gear on my distributor striped out
Oh man .. my 15yr old son is the same way. I offer to teach him but he’d rather play video games. I feel your pain!
my jeep has stalled and timing seems great chian is good a TDC rotor position is still good sparks has fire bur it wont crank. barb get gas. its a heads are better than one situation.
What if you don't get a check engine light?
What the third thing he said? What was the third trouble shoot thing he did
Don't let it get to you too much, I didn't become too mechanically proficient until I joined the service and moved out. When you have to start paying for it yourself, you realize how much cheaper it is to do routine maintenance and drive the car like you've got to pay for it haha keep up the great work!
That's the same as it was for me. My father was pretty dang handy, but I didn't learn too much more than the absolute basics when I was in the house - many years ago now. I guess one of the bigger motivating factors was moving away from apartment living. Suddenly you have a place to work on things, and then find that everything needs fixing.
True James ! Thanks for your service too BTW ! :)
Its a pleasure to serve! Keep turnin wrenches!
Thank you for the video! I have a 94 YJ 4.0 which had the same symptoms and it ended up being one of the wires pinched going to the ignition coil plug. I just ordered a new pigtail and connector which should fix it indefinitely.
Been fixing cars since before i started driving haha..... Keep it up :)
Way to go Leather !!!!!
Ah man, heart breaking to see the YJ looking so used and abused. Especially after all the work you put into it! Your boy should be proud to be driving a piece of history right there!
Up but its his - he bought it and must deal with the consequences :)
David got a tj jeep put new fuel sensor a new fuel pump driving down the road it just quit Mormon and in a few minutes starts back up any suggestions
Same issue here.
This is like an episode of the twilight zone. It's spooky !
I'm Dad and my son uses our 91 Jeep YJ. I'm doing everything this dad is doing and my son does everything like his son (maintenance wise) or the lack of rather .
I thought it was me watching me in a differnt dimension....lol
God bless our sons !
Love that greenbon that yj. I went through a check something ( disappears quick. not brake and check engine those stay just long enough with starting).
Battery good all around
Sprayed wd40 on starter. oil collecting?
Cleaned under hood relays and fuses
Started right up.
Now loss of power on occasion.
Going to try this.
Great video. Even if it's not my problem, fun to watch.
What state do you live. I wish I could talk to you
Wait that’s the YJ you rebuilt? Holy crap that thing looks terrible now! Nothing is worse than putting so much time and effort into a project and Jeep for someone to mistreat and abuse it.
I hear ya - when you sell it , it is sold sadly :)
I agree with you Dave! Consequences.
Great job! Thanks!
Miss your Jeep videos, David
MM - keep watchin :)
Amen brother!
I would have guessed ignition control module that's what went out on mine
Great video, thank you
Missed the vids Dave!!!
Thanks Jmac !!!
Ya i hear ya about kids i have two same issue with cars .good vid
Thanks GMG - it truly is sad but I will be missed when Im gone LOL
When my son was 16-17yrs old, I told my son, who also has zero mechanical knowledge , " you best pay attention to what im doing , or you better get a good education and great job . He took me up on the education part and job part instead!!!
Yeaaa .. the YJ again :-) I've got another YJ build in the works. You know you need another one Dave .. lol. I could come down help ya with it being that I'm just a little north of Nashville. Good diagnostige vid! Keep it up. Later man!
You need to stop by when in the area :)
I’m in the same boat your in my son don’t care Either it’s said we won’t be around for ever I’ve tried to teach him he like his iPhone more 😔
It sounds like your "diagnostic tips" is to throw parts at it. At least it's a jeep and it only takes a few parts to keep it running.
Great video
Your son could have had the Jeep towed to a shop and had them do the work. My guess is somewhere around 250 dollars and at least a few days without the Jeep would be the result. You better be having a heck of a Father's Day.
hahahaha yeah I think you arent really appreciated until they have to start paying for things LOL
Lol I gave my daughter a Cherokee xj. Guess who bails her out all the time on the side of the road. Yup Daddy jajaja. Thanks for the video my yj is doing the same hope one of these pointers can have her running again
Thank you
Good thing you had that spare computer to rule that out. Got to get them involved when they're young, if you wait until the teen years, it's too late ;)
FB - it is too late LOL
Dave...for the love of YJs pleeeaaasssee buy it back 😢. That's a damned travesty! She even looks like a wash is in order.
Hahahaha I got a 20 year old in my house that’s the same....
Society has ruined Young People .... hahaha
@@RedneckGarage am young. Can confirm. My friends can’t figure out how a wrench works
Excelent video
Fix me problem in me yj 95
I have 2 girls in their 20's. I taught them both about general maintenance and care with their cars and to at least to be able to change a flat tire. No their husbands I told them they need thick check books because they don't have a clue.
man that made me laugh ..... no doubt :)
sad to see the YJ being treated so poorly after you put so much time, work, money and effort into restoring it...
I know right ?
Wth, went backwards in the process lmao realized no spark first thing to check was coil and could’ve done that with a simple multimeter
I got 5 kids and they tear up every vehicle they get in. I'm not going to keep fixing there crap.....
Get him off those video games, get'em in the garage and show him what to look for and how to fix it. Do routine maintenance etc. etc. My boys work on their own cars, of course when they break down and their not playing games lol. Actually I told them the same thing, look after your car, keep up on maintenance and it'll last.
Goooood Luck - one day they will wish they learned something :)
😂😂 a kids truck thank for the video. Your son sounds like my daughter she drove her jeep with a oil leak which she fail to Maintain and she blow the engine
Done all of that to the Jeep no spark
I guess they think they will be rich and can buy a new car every few years. If they can only get dear, old dad to fix it one more time before that happens...
Whew - no doubt :) I tell them all the time - I wont be around forever - one day you will be on your own ..... and I feel sorry for you ..... hahahaha
Peach it Brother!
hahahaha
You seem like a very smart man, You just speak the cold hard truth....
I'm actually having the same problem with my 1991 Wrangler YJ... I've had it for about 8 years. And when i first bought it it would just die while driving it.. Then after about 10 minutes it would start back, Other times it had to set for an hour or two... I replaced the cam sensor, crank sensor and I believe i replaced the coil. (Can't remember it's been so long ago) It still would take spells of dying at random times. I put a new auto shutdown relay in it and I assume that it fixed it, because it ran for afew years without ever dying.
But, It finally did it again and I'm really puzzled as to what it could be. I really dread replacing all of those parts once again, and especially purchasing a new computer... Any ideas, or any way to check each part?
I've read alot of forums online and tons of people have had the same problem, but no one ever said what the problem was.
My bet was on the crank sensor all the way. WRONG!
I know right ? The RPM threw me off - I forgot it doesnt register till running LOL
I have 3 kids the same way
My daughters are the same way, actually. But then... you have a son.
ugggg when you see his hair in an upcoming video you will wonder LOL
allways start with the cheapest/easyest part first. When you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras
yup that would be checking the fuel gauge lol
