- So, in the true spirit of Hot Rodding, we began to wonder if a guy were to build a ’32 Roadster in 1969 with the goal of it being the “baddest thing on the street” …what would it look like? That's the idea behind the Rat Roaster project!
The criteria was simple.
ONE: It would have to outrun the hottest muscle car on the street by at least a second or two.
TWO: It would have to pack some serious “WOW” factor in the engine, paint and overall look.
THREE: It has to be realistic and affordable for a young Hot Rodder to build, so no exotic, high-dollar parts or engines.
Finally, it HAD to reflect the Rock & Roll mentality and style of the times.

I have a '32 Ford Roadster rusting away in my back woods. It was my grandfather's. He smashed it in a race in the 40's and it's been sitting in the woods ever since.
Trucks! and Gearz were the best shows man, I loved these long build series, no other show went into so much of the build details, and every build was unique. Stacey David, you were the one guy who really got me interested in project car building as teen in the 90's. You were not a phony, we could feel the love you had for your babies throughout! Love these full build videos!
💯 in total agreement. I loved watching everything Stacy David did in his shows. I didn't just watch his shows because I found them interesting or because I'm a gear head. I learned many of the skills and mechanical knowledge I have because I was always paying close attention to everything that was being said & done, from the parts being used and reasoning behind it, Quality and pricing difference, what parts are best for your build or what will work just as well while easier on your wallet.

One day, I hope I'll be able to save a little and build one myself. I remember how I fell in love with 32's , and to this day I think they are one of the most beautiful cars ever produced.
I remember watching this build with my son when he was 11 this is what got him in to classic cars and it brought us closer together as father and son.

It's been decades since I meddled with muscle cars, this operation takes me back.
I'm 64 years now, a disabled veteran and particularly today because I'm not feeling well your presentation lifted my spirits.
Miraculously I've survived 3 heart attacks since 2009, one being a Widow Maker but it's time again to get back into living healthier. I had a scare the other day & went to the emergency room HOWEVER God is good & a wake up call is just that.
Thank you again & maybe if I get over the Harley phase ( ha ha ) I'll get back to a muscle car. Even a late 60's V8 sedan would be nice.

You were SO far ahead of the competition back when-and even further ahead now… On the streaming services, Pod Casts and YT channels they school the cast of characters to keep similar clothing, haircuts, even eyewear so the production folks can cut and splice without regard to style or months (or even years) between takes. I lived in your neck of the woods back at the new millennium and saw you around from time-to-time. I recall some viewers criticizing your work ware AND your hair style, but you never lost focus nor raised a fuss, you just wear what works and have a head of hair. Fast forward to today and we can see 20 plus years of episodes from over the decades and only notice the passage of time by the surrounding traffic. You haven’t aged at all.
Good Job! Love seeing the projects again and your techniques are timeless and effective.

I was just a kid when that aired on TV. I've been in the army and gotten out have 3 college degrees and work on semis now and have 3 kids crazy how time flies great build. I have those same valve covers on my father in laws 68 c10 were building together. Thank you for all the childhood memories watching you on Trucks building Copperhead to this watched these with my dad.

If you skip a lot of the indulgences he did (blown engine, custom paint, etc) you can do it for a reasonable price.
@@bmstylee should have been a flathead ( thumb nail 20ft away i thought it was a late-50's ish hotrod build and nail-V8 power glide-automatic or modern TUC/computer-6-speed or 3 🌲to modern TR6060 platform and 9" pumpkin 🎃 )( more so if you're poor in 1970 as swapping it out ( and possibly buying the car from a no car hobby's person aka a model-A engine/flat 4L or continental 4-6-8L cylinder's and or Oakland engine and maybe transmission? aka i don't care just make it drive beater bomb pre-1955 and or WW2 special as repair/tooling wasn't really happening aka hard ) is expensive and 2hand parts where probably cheaper and or other richer hot roder's had mostly moved on to better/bigger/more HP and or torque outputs ) or nail head or 1st gen hemi ( and probably alcohol or nitromethane powered or race gas/av-gas leaded heavy aka good for the engine but not for the owner as in that era it was easy to buy and cheap vs now most run E85 or 91-pump gas ⛽ ( or ShT-gas ) and racing-gas 95-160ron* and nitromethane is the exotic fuels in ~2000-up~ ) or FMEL-V8 as lincoln's could be found in including v12tov16-flatheads ( same for caddy's engine's plus a couple of OHV choices and or aircraft based engine's ect as by 1940-1970 the junkyard choices was wild in the right circumstances/cities vs internet/corporation-big-yards/parts-store now days as a boneyard and or more copy and paste-fans aka choices got less and less and or costs to be different are more auto-hobby wise ) or 1940~1965~ OHV-v8's pre-SBF302's as that wasn't really out yet same problem for the biger ford-bolck's or dodge big block aka 320-572CI hemi ( was under the right circumstances super cheap v8 Polly or max-wedge or regular-wedge as finding a wrecked donor 1940's-65 car happened and or rich-boy's buying dealership NOS parts for $$$ like the 426-hemi platform or cammer-ford a H-lot less likely as ford-corporate-boardroom aka top brass like the CEO/CFO had to ok the sale same for Chevy's/other choice's for a swap platform as dodge didn't care as much and was after new loyal fans/$$ USD ) or wedge version or packards engine swap's 8L cylinder's to the later 1955-61ish 5" bore spread/spacing v8's as the Chevy's in the 60's was $$$ and not junkyard or auto-part's store common ect yet the 350 and 383SBC and or big block-Chevy's in ford-coup's is 90-'s thing and up personally id pass on chevy flavour but i know in 2000~-up it's cheaper/easy way now as the buick nails have junkyard/aftermarket dried up-ish ( cold war and or the USA 🇺🇸 government used most of the NOS and used cores up and it's replaced now/in 1970's~ with Chevy's SBC and more likely the BBC-454, so commonplace the 🇺🇸 government asked for GM corporate to continually make new crate engine's but GM's CEO/CFO said no! so it didn't happen for the nailhead ) the most likely swap as im not a buick or really a ford guy for reference aka i drive a 60's charger ( dodge guy with razing of a chevy truck dad with ford leanings ( and mixed dad-grandpa moper-chevy-little ford-leaning the other grandparents is 80-2005's caddie and heavy ford fans not sure how a Lincoln barge didn't find a home with them ? ) aka i ended up buy his K1500 1980's and later on a 1968 C10 ) with a 440/hemi platform and 7-speed TR6070 transmission efi ect
and yes dad loves fendered 1920-40's ford's/Lincoln's like this but OHV and automatic-transmission swaped aka almost looks OEM-stock in blue paint black interior
@@bmstylee i forgot the other buick transmission choice the funky but cool torque converter CVT sorry forgot the marketing names ( made pre-1965 i think and after 1930 something and was used in some tanks/government applications ) but it's way different from the say a 727 or turbo 350 GM transmission that came after it in the 1960's
aka 1970 ford-32 swapped to a nailhead i can see this biuck/tank-CVT being used as the OEM donor car's being used might have it and in that era adaptation and or one click away wasn't a thing so lazy choice/most people was using all of it and or manuals found later one at say a swap meet or glide used out of a later gm product or aftermarket seller by the 80's 3-speed-automatic transmission was a easier thing to do vs pre-1970
1st gen hemi and Polly's were used for government application's as well so maybe this is got something to do with the use in hotroding?
pre-computer and or internet connection common access 2000'sish marking one off or smaller bach part-runs was harder to do ( as you need tooling manual ie welder and or bridge-port mill/lathe and a skilled tradesmen plural just to make one part/model/thingies. say/ie scanning/cad and 3d printing for the end use or mockup for the CNC mill ect ) but now people have the tooling i think 🤔💭 to do wilde/different flavour hot rod's not sure why it's not done as much aka the LSX or SBC-350 ( and i think pre-1995 the stroker crankshaft and or big tall lift ~300-400th+ cams was't a thing and or very expensive so for a 1970 build wasn't a thing yet in less your contact's are COPO/engineer team or higher end tradesmen with the right conditions to make/buddy's-team your self/team parts ) swapping is commonplace/copycating others ride's 🤔🤗, i do know the 1st and 2d gen hemi as a swap meet and or swap option or crate engine is way more than a LSX-junkyard swap same for swap meet's, BTW this isn't just a 1933 ford thing ( dad's into the 2006-up EFI one's/modern for reference vs flatheads and carbs ect ) as i have seen 1970 dart's ( sibling love's 4-door late 60's A-body/dart candy red-paint/green 💭 interior weirdness to me but ok roll with it at least he wants a dodge efi/turbine engine and or hybrid, also like's the hennasy TT dodge 1998 gts vipers in blue stock/oem delivered ) LSX swaped not a fan really weird LSX swapping into brand-X that doesn't make sense or fit the caricature of the new home it in, mopar makes a ok setup same for a 2006 charger that was LSX swaped why is already a V8 and or hellcat/SRT ( i get it's not perfect for idling/daily as the camshaft/lifter's can go bad but Chevy's aren't perfect either all the way and or after a X-year use's the same lifter aka can go bad or other failure mode's ) and a bigger size to start with?? ford mustang's/truck's get the same experience? and ford has way more choices as Chevy's after a while settled on ( badge engineering ect and or didn't help finances leading to bankruptcy in 2008 plus poor workers at the bottom vs brass at the top relations aka we kinda hate are working class's ) SBC-size or close to it and kinda BBC400-640ci but now in 2023 i think it's harder to get at the dealership's? not counting chevy 4-bangers or diesels as the options have grown to the point it's hard to name or remember them all same way for others brands to be fair also more 🇺🇸 hotrods aren't likely to use them? other than some diesel engine or hybrid or BEV swapping i have seen 1st person ect

This was a cool project. It's absolutely doable for a guy who make a reasonable living, didn't make bad life decisions, and haa a bit of mechanical aptitude.
Love how its spun as a budget build…. Its all of $100k.
I'm sure he mentioned this several times, " realize the whole plan before YOU build it " and as a disabled veteran on a fixed income I'd build this 32 low budget chassis components, low budget paint, low budget tires/rims & be happy with a Chevy Stovebolt 261 c.i. Six for the street only.

Another channel I watch on CZcams is Sleeperdude. Sleeperdude does amazing low budget builds and radical ressurections using what's available in his garage first.
Then if he can't create the part he needs he'll resort to a manufacturer. No car is ever perfect or pretty, or show worthy. But the skill, creativity and inspiration from the Sleeperdude channel motivates me across the board.

I'm happy to see these videos as a one and done as opposed to how they were presented on TV. Always loathed how it was a skip around affair where it seemed like 4 projects took 10 years to complete. Granted, there's always the usual recap that took up a great deal of time per episode, but it just seemed like nothing got done. Thankfully YT came along and shook up the TV industry so that even the PowerBlock is now focusing on one project at a time.
This just got edited to be all at once. Shit takes time, even on TV. Especially if you've gotta wait for parts, shipping, and to find just the right company to PAY you to use their parts. Have patience.

@@bandwagon240 indeed it does, but it still takes time. Now we'd all love it 8f they started a project, then kept going until it was done. In fact, I'm doing that with my first CZcams project next year. The only way I'll be able to do that is by biting the bullet, paying FULL price, and filming the entire thing BEFORE that first episode airs. Which I'll probably only be able to do a few times before wait times don't line up with a weekly episode schedule. That means doing more than project at once... and the viewers are just gonna have to wait.

I love the rat roadster project! I watched this back when it was new on tv. You really inspired me to create my own creations and put them out for others to see on CZcams. I forgot that you put a bass drum pedal in this car. I built a ratty 63 split corvette and put a gretsch floating action pedal in it. It gave me a lead foot but it was super cool! Thanks for making years of videos that inspired me to think outside the box.

When my Father (God rest His Soul) was 19 yrs old he had a '32 roadster, but he got in a car wreck with it. T-boned by a truck and it rolled over. He had scars on his arms because he laid down and wrapped the across the bench seat. that car was built well because he survived the crash. I always wanted to make him one when he was alive, but could never afford the project. Still think that '32 is the best body style for a hot rod ever. my second choice is the crown vic. I want one of those die casts. let me know for sure.

Hi that is sweet my buddy and I worked on his 32 roadster original it was fun plus I work on model T 's
I watched the video, Totally loved the build process and the paint color.......LOVE IT! But never was mentioned what this "budget Build" actually cost! I would think even without the paint and the chromed parts, it would still run pretty close to $100,000! I'm pretty sure that one DID!
Maybe his version, but without a blown motor and custom rear end and suspension this build could definitely be duplicated at a lower cost.
Tremendously enjoyed this video. The Beachboys "Little Deuce Coupe" was my favorite song in high school, and I lusted to have one. Finally, in 1968, I purchased an already-built '32 5-window Hot Rod for $900. It had a 1965 327 Corvette engine with the aluminum high-rise intake manifold, high- performance Holley 4-barrel carb and a Vertex Magneto. Put out an estimated 360 horsepower, and with lighter weight fiberglass fenders, it was essentially unbeatable on the street (couldn't drag race it because it had no scatter shield). There was much to do to upgrade a lot of the components, as the car was obviously used for many years before I got it (except for the newer engine). One of the first things I did was to have it repainted "Lime Fire Green" -- almost identical in color to the Rat Roaster. Unfortunately, I was not an experienced mechanic and depended on other people to do some of the upgrades and repairs (of which there were many!). Being a poor college student at the time, it was hard to support the cost of ownership of this amazing hot rod. As much as I loved owning it, after two years I had to sadly sell it. I still carry a photo of it, with me standing beside it at age 20.

I like it that Stacy built this car on a realistic budget. I'm certain nothing was provided free of charge. Makes me feel good a Cable TV guy with clout is keeping things real and grounded by NOT accepting free donated engines, blowers, carbs, wheel, tires, transmissions, body kits, drivetrain kits, brakes, body work and paint. I may go and build this same vehicle.............................

In 1962 one of my classmates Dad put a nailhead Buick in their '32 and blew all our minds when my classmate got to drive it to school. We dreamed of owning a 32 thru 34 ourselves. Yes,, they were plentiful and very affordable in the 1960's. I could have owned a '35 Ford 3 deuces flathead, 3 speed pickup for $300. It may as well have been $3,000 'cause I didn't have that kind a money as a 16 year old. Now, 60 years later I'm too old but the desire is still there and the pocket book is still too flat to own one.
Im in my early 30's and watching stacey in my mid teens was sooooo much fun and interesting. I watched alot of horsepower garage and trucks with this man. And to this day i dont own a truck not my thing. My bug is german cars but wrenching is wrenching. Maybe thats why im a mechanic now

In 68 I'm gonna say best power for the buck back then was the small hemi like the 392 they were cheap and inexpensive back then I was buying them for 100-200 bucks and if you hung around the tracks back then you could pick up blown baby hemis that were loaded with speed parts for a few bucks that huys blew up racing thats what I did I use to hang around our 3 local drag strips and usually by the end of the weekend I had a pickup and trailer full of blown engines and parts and I'd take them home and pull parts and put them in my engines and go race. Back in those days the hemis were still in abundance and could pick up old Desoto cars with baby hemis for pennies and then in the mid 70s you had the pontiacs they were torque motors in stock form and you could pick up those old bonnevilles and catalinas with the 389s or 400s in them for a couple hundred and most of them had the powerglide or 400 tranny behind them. We ran a metal bodied t on a 32 chevy frame from 62-78 and we ran anything in it that ran by friday night and drove it to the local track raced all night and drove it back home. Think we had 50 bucks in the car itself and rest of our pocket change went to buying cars for engines and parts. Didn't have all those 9 inch rears back in those old days we ran the old oldsmobile rears with the removable centers or we had a couple old ford banjo rears with franklin centers in them out of old dirt cars but only one of our local tracks would let us run them. I don't remember to many small block chevies back in our early days they were mostly just in the haulers weren't many on our tracks.

I wasn't able to run my Olds powered Roadster after the first run of 11.70 at 123 mph at any NHRA or AHRA track because it wasn't caged... were you able to get timed run at a track?

That’s an awesome conversion, far less hi tech bs simple raw power proven design, love the turbos great idea 👍 and affordable later on to rebuild the engine without remortgaging your home,I know the Porsche anoraks love the horizontally opposed crank layout for good reason , however this system is much cheaper and has more grunt by far for the bucks, a no brainer 👍👍👍👍

I think a 6-71 blower from a screaming Jimmy with a BDS conversation kit. It would help show the younger people how we used to supercharge on budget. I remember asking buying old Detroit diesel blowers for cheap.
One of the most common engine made then and now is the Chevy 350 casting #3970010, 4 bolt mains. Set of vortex heads and EFI and your on the high side of 450+hp.
Chevy did put vortec heads and fuel injection on a 350.it made 195 HP.
@@billbonu1639 Not all Vortex head will work. Most are no better than old bowtie heads. Casting #'s 902 and 680? I think are the right ones. Google it.

Personally, I would have done what my dad did and cut the exhaust pipe, adjust it for clearance and the electric cutout, tig it back together and recoat it with cerakote instead of notching the frame to fit the exhaust. To each their own though.

What's funny is I used to run a big (built in) Cincinnati Press like that in Hamilton Ontario at a place called National Steel Car building rail cars. They are Using a (built in ) Hamilton Press in Ohio.

All that polished aluminium is a maintenance nightmare - anyone not understanding the chemical conversion of raw aluminium to the atmosphere is in for a shock - or - a huge amount of polishing - week after week after week etc etc. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.
There's a product called Sharkhide that supposedly protects the aluminum for a long time ,they use it on aluminum pontoon boats too . Other companies make a true Clear colored coating to protect things like factory aluminum manifold etc. for restored cars .
FYI, On all brake lines I use industrial style 10,000 psi lines from the master cylinder to front brakes, rear brakes everywhere. Not a single steel brake line anywhere. Works great from 1974 to the present 2023. I was able to find conversion brake lines here in Houston, Texas.

It’s a lot of good looking craftsmanship but I can’t imagine a color I wouldn’t like better. Plain tan, white, lilac, pretty much anything would look better to me.
Not a big fan of 32 but I really like how the car turned out.
Classic wagons are making a big comeback in the car shows. My favorite is a Vista cruiser, by Oldsmobile.
Ok, now I gotta find the Revell model and build it!
