Fallout New Vegas: Defeating Legate Lanius with Barter

- The speech options you can use to get Legate Lanius to back down if you have a barter of 100 (or 80+ with a skill book and the comprehension perk or 90 without the perk). In my case, I had barter at 80-something but used a skill book and also had the perk.
If the text seems to small to read, I apologize. It should be easier to read in HD. It's smaller and looks different because of a mod I have installed.
I'm able to reach level 34 because I have Dead Money installed.
Note that this is a re-upload from my previous version, which was lower res. Doing some searching here led to me finding Camtasia Studio 7, which seems to have done a good job with the file size while still managing good quality. Though, it is the trial version. - Hry

Lanius was a warrior not a leader
@Zxylo 5 yeah but it's confirmed that as soon as Caesars dies the legion will eat itself soon as after. Lanius is tough but from his speech alone it proves he's not the best leader. "We only need to move forward" is a terrible strategy for conquest. Now Vulpus would be a great leader but lanius hates him.

Lanius' only weaknesses: 100 Speech and 100 Barter
AceofArrows - Minecraft Redstone Master thats the important one.
Also apparently my cybernetic woman's fist, because I downed him in a few punches at low level.
Also the riot shotgun and the "And Stay Back" perk. You can just keep him stunned on the ground.
I personally just have so many unarmed perks that even without a special gauntlet I'd say at minimum 1/4 or so of my hits (even more when I do the NCR ranger takedown attack) just plain KO the enemy. Then I just pop some pills, and vats stomp them to death.
yes it is funny but the real weaknesses is his idea of strongness: Lanius and the legion belive that loosing is for weak and must be punished.
The fear of loosing make him chose the battle to fight. Meaby this conversation was a giant bluff of the courier, or meaby he was right, but if you make him belive that there is a chance for him to not only lose a battle, but an entire war, he will chose to not fight.
I wish they had this option to beat him...

That would be HILARIOUS. It would be more fitting for House if that could be incorporated into the story. Maybe House gambles for the right to rule New Vegas, or let you decide it’s fate.
However, Caravan all but eliminates luck and chance. I also haven’t played against an AI that’s any good at the game, asides from Nash Johnson at Primm, and even then its because you haven’t got any extra cards yet.

Let's all take a moment to insult FO4 dialogue system. Ok? Ready?
It sucks.
+BakuTex Press up for yes, left for maybe, right to say something that might be witty but who knows what the PC will say and down for no.
Damien Don't hate me for hating on the dumbed down aspects of a dumbed down game.
+Damien Criticizing something does not reduce it's value. If anything, it provides developers with lots of community thoughts. What would be toxic to the community is the game being uncriticizable and therefore bethesda doesn't even have to try .
+Kang the Mad Exactly! If they don't get real criticism from people that are 'allowed' to say something without fear of getting fired etc., they might never know that people as a whole don't like something. If they don't know, things will never change.
Just look at all of the games, movies etc. where we see or hear about early versions of them or various parts of them. How often do we hear about things that the person generally credited as the creator wanted but others said no, or gave feedback that resulted in changes? Sometimes they change makes us wish we could have had the original version. Sometimes, we end up relieved that someone said something and they made changes because the original idea would have been a disaster.
Sometimes, all it takes is one person to say something. You may well find that others agree that were afraid to say anything. maybe it was fear they were the only ones that felt that way or maybe it was something else, or a combination of things. Either way, sometimes, all people need is a little push to get things going.
ExplodingConsole Im actually kinda worried about TES now.. Since Skyrim, bethesda has been simplifying aspects of their games (The leveling system and the dialogue as well.) Skyrim's speech skill was pretty useless... So you couldn't play as some kind of pacifist.
I love how FNV is a game that takes place in the future, but it still has a set of roman fantasy armor that looks better than most fantasy movies and games.
Rafe758 the armour is sometimes a concoction of stuff they found in the wastes, old military or police gear like riot shields, or stuff from their own forges, you can clearly pick out the T-45D power armour they jury rigged into shoulder pads and such, lanius' gear was probably something like modified police riot armour like the Desert ranger and NCR ranger.

WE MUST HAVE DIED ALONE...
The Legion is composed of an amalgamation of 86 separate tribes, given what we know about settlements in the wasteland these tribes are likely communities of less than 1000 people on a high estimate. They haven’t been around long enough to inflate their numbers through mass reproduction. That’s a population of less than 86000, spread across a large area of territory controlled by standing armies that themselves consume resources, but the amount of soldiers they have is far below that. The Legion doesn’t have females soldiers or even advanced support staff because of misogyny, cutting the population they can draw numbers from in half. Assuming they’re at least semi intelligent they’d use women and slaves to supplement their production and maintenance facilities like farms and ammo factories. So the remaining 43000 would be the amount they’ve left to work with, but that number would also less than their standing armies assuming total conscription. Firstly the amount of able bodied men would be diminished by things like age and combat attrition, given how shit Legion technology is it’s safe to assume almost nobody makes it past 60 (at least not in combat ready shape), as for attrition they’ve been at war for their entire existence and it’s safe to assume they’ve only rebuilt their numbers through mass subjugation. Their medical capacities are flat out terrible (partially by design) so things such as disease and infection are very real threats. Given how much advanced support that can’t be draw from raw slave labor any soldiers need in terms of equipment maintenance, supply management, training, healers, and weapon production much of their army doesn’t see regular combat. It’s not unreasonable to suggest that they only have half the original amount of the male population as actual soldiers at best leaving 21500ish. There’s also the matter of holding territory which is another issue. Tribal societies lack knowledge of true large scale agricultural practices things like irrigation and pesticides are likely in very low scale; food shortages could very easily kill them not even mentioning storage and supply lines. Their major strength is in stable trade routes which they need standing armies to maintain, and those armies also see attrition by dangers of the wasteland like mutant animals and raider gangs. Advanced weapons are almost nonexistent among them and their own firearms require costly trade connections and facilities to maintain, and again supply lines. That’s a heavy limitation on how much they can actually throw at the Mojave because they need most of their armies to keep from falling apart from attrition or insurrection which is again another halving of their armies to 10750ish on a high estimate. There’s no goddamn way that all 10000 of them will fight to the last man, casualty rates of around 20-30% would cause a mass route like in real armies. On a structural level their leadership is difficult to replace and easily targeted, because of the stupid idea to give commanders different armour. Despite what Lanius says Caesar is a messianic figure to them so his death would obliterate their morale in the long term.Their training involves throwing weaklings into the most dangerous fights and scraping together whoever survives. All it would take to destroy their command structure is a competent assassination team. The end result is a Legion that cannot function without successful conquest in the immediate future, has be heavily restructured in the long term, and one that’s ready to fall apart with the deaths of key individuals. The fight for the Dam is either a short reprieve from a much longer and ultimately fatal campaign or the last nail in the coffin for a insanely structurally unsound expansion. If their numbers are even less than the extremely generous estimates I’ve given them there’s a good chance a single courier with the inclination could completely destroy them as a faction with enough effort, just mop up their commanders and target key supply routes then let them fall to power struggles and resource deficiencies.
Ian L pretty good but I’d say the number for mass retreat would be something like 50-60% because their the legion and most legionaries are the ones raised from a young age to die for the legion
[Barter 300] dialogue option right here
Your population numbers are way off. The NCR is said to have at least 700000 citizens in Fallout 2 which takes place 40 years before New Vegas. They probably have well over a million people living there by now and he Legion is said to have a similar population. The game just has no way to actually show this.
Big Guy For You Nobody states that the Legion has a similar population, the math doesn’t work out for that to be true. Bear in mind that the NCR has been around a lot longer than the Legion as Caesar is originally from the NCR. Character statements are also circumspect as the person stating it isn’t an objective source.
Big Guy For You Tribal societies also don’t have the resources or agricultural practices to maintain large scale populations, if they did they wouldn’t be tribals. Technology is strongly linked to population growth and Legion technology is total crap.

I honestly do hope they follow up on this moment in the game, maybe not for the player but at least some kind of knowledgement of a great battle between NCR and Legion where the Courier faced Legate and defeated him...or was slain by him.
I feel like this is the kind of war Caesar expected for the Legion after his demise, Lainus as the Legate and now leader of those of the mark of the bull need to adapt, reshape it’s structure and tactics, thesis and antithesis.
Right now he is tested, conquer alone isn’t the path to victory if they can’t hold the west and east, both financially and as a nation, they’ll fall harder than the bear did.
The courier acted as the thesis, and now after the conflict, the legion shall encounter its synthesis to become something greater, something to truly rival the might of the west.
Top bad barter backfires on you in dead money. But good call on the courier hitting a nerve with Lanius that he is woefully unready for actually ruling New Vegas
Brilliant military general, strategist, one of the most powerful men in the Mojave in both raw might and authority. He holds an entire army under his command, and can reign supreme in any battle he chooses.
A man in a blue jumpsuit said "but no water" and he gave up
This is a great rebuttal to a premature Legion invasion of the NCR, but you need to remember that Lanius isn't Caesar. The real plan is to hold the Mojave, establish a new capital for the Legion in New Vegas, and after a period of stability and growth, proceed West into the heart of the NCR as an empire reborn. Lanius is completely skipping over the second, most important step in order to invade California as quickly as possible, which is where the logistical problems come from. He would just kill and enslave everything that moves in the Mojave before rampaging through California. Edward Sallow was born an NCR citizen, so he knows better than anyone in the Legion about its infrastructure and government, and how best to subvert and ultimately conquer it. The Legion will only succeed if Caesar is alive to lead it.
Yes, the Legion’s best bet is to capture Vegas and thus, the Mojave, but there are two problems with that:
Vegas itself, if it has its upgraded defenses, will cost a lot of bodies, espeically with the LEgion’s lack of heavy weapons
Hoover dam needs to be their supply chain and depending how they recruit the surrounding region, they likely wont be able to go beyond the Dam they just captured.
Even after capturing Vegas, it would take Decades to capture and hold the Mojave with their numbers.
Also with the DLC, the Mojave is subject ot terrible consequences in that time frame, that will make it a harsh place to live.
"Until the day when our armies meet again, envoy of Vegas - I shall wait for you on the battlefield."

I always liked this ending. Using barter to win. Reminds me of The Meeting of Leo I and Attila the Hun.

One of the reasons I want a New Vegas sequel is knowing what's the canon ending.

It requires high level explosive skill checks, and there is no dialogue since you're a mile and a half away from him
@@sauercrowder Are you joking? I don't remember this option.
@@fratervinny fuck me you're dense
"trade helped us survive" is a better line then all of Bethesda's work combined. Seriously - it's timing, it's place, it's reason - this is deeply intelligent, and I love that Obsidian gives it to us!
The entire game keeps hammering home the point about how even the more powerful and more numerous NCR struggles to govern the Mojave while at war
There was no chance of the Legion doing any better if they won.
WHY DID I PUT ALL MY POINTS INTO BARTERING
make tons of money
Sao abridged reference
Just like actual Rome -- spread too thin over too far, it stretched itself to death occupying more land then it could hope to reasonably maintain.
By the looks of that ammo counter, you were ready to do great battle
The art of the deal.
This game was the only true sequel to fo2. Fo4 was a good game, just did't live up to its name. I don't know why Bethesda can make games like morriwind, oblivion and skyrim but can't make something like new vagas lol.
The Man With No Plan >Implying Skyrim was good*
Oblivion's questlines were fucking wonderful
And Shivering Isles is the best expansion Bethesda has made up to date, and that shit's not for debate
The Conspirationist
Lmao, Skyrim was my first Bethesda game; fuck off
The Conspiratorist how does it feel to be so wrong?
Dragonlight Reaper Wow. Then your opinion is quite impressive. I played Oblivion first and then Skyrim. I never really enjoyed Skyrim, don't know why. The too hard trying voice acting maybe, the stupid pointless accent. The NPC design with the sword swing motion feeling the same. It was just like a feeling of playing a video game instead of a feeling of being transported to a world of fantasy. I never understood why people praise Skyrim SO much and downgrade Oblivion so much also.
ULTIMATEGAMEDUDE
Skyrim's a good game imo, just a *HORRIBLE* TES game
I guess the reason so many people bash Oblivion is because it was too "mainstream" as in it was to medieval themed.
And people were expecting a jungle and 2 different Imperial Cultures, not a forest with 1 unified Imperial Culture.
Oblivion also took away a lot of RPG/Skill elements from Morrowind. In Morrowind you had a ton of choices, and the game reflected on your character's skill, not YOUR skill (What I mean by this is cast chance and strike chance).
And enchanting...The beautifully broken enchanting...
Shivering Isles is by far the best expansion as of yet, however.
Beating a savage with capitalist logic.
You can beat new vegas without killing a single creature, and you can kill every npc in the game "except yes man"
This is the power of money.
so no one is probably going to see this, but should i get fallout new vegas? i'm playing fallout 3 a bit and i kind of want something more deep, is this the way to go?
Javatolligii yes
thanks bro
Javatolligii new vegas...isnt quite finished. but thats enough to be better than f3.
The deserts make it feels blank.
But there's more to replace it's blankness especially humor.
FULLY-ERECT HAND PENISES
Javatolligii Absolutely.
New Vegas was such an amazing game.
idk why, but I was deadass just expecting him to be like "I'm gonna pay you $100 to fuck off."
And thus the chat system in F76 is restored to its former glory.
Imagine if you can talk down Dagoth Ur with speechcraft.
"I'll pay you 100$ to fuck off."
I swear man I wish I invested more into Speech or Barter. I could never beat Lanius the normal way, and had to console command him to die.
No wasted words when this dude speaks... I've never even played this game
this aged like fine wine ngl
Imagine the Barter skill actually mattering.
No, each DLC mission increases the maximum level by 5.
In the distance, you can see the ghost of Milton Friedman, smiling and nodding his head.
I love how he runs afterwards.
epic voice
I like think that Lanius died shortly after the events of New Vegas, because of something seamingly minor like tooth infection or falling and hitting his head, or just a sudden heart attack.
An anti-climax like that for that Monster's story to end amuses me
Kinda like Ceasar, no?
I saw banter everytime in my recommendations
*[Barter 100] "I'm gonna pay you 50 Aureus to fuck off Lanius"*
I just beat Fallout NV and I sided with Yes Man, now I don't know what to do.
SOAG19 repeat siding with someone else
Nothing the game is over sadly
Psychopath play through!
Yes man was there in case you screwed with the 3 other factions,
Try House, NCR or even Legion playthrough.
New Vegas: main "bad guys" have a deep rooted philosophy behind them
Fallout 3: I AHM THE ENCLAVE!
Fallout 4: YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND
I love how fast he runs
(Fallout 4 version)
Lanius: "An envoy of Vegas, yet you carry yourself for battle. If so, you cannot **truly** be from that city of cowards."
[Battle] "Bring it on." (starts combat)
[Coward] "Coward? I'm not the one hiding my face behind a mask." (starts combat)
[Vegas] "Maybe Vegas is tougher than you thought." (starts combat)
[sarcasm] "Wow. You aren't compensating for anything _at all._ Shush: I won't tell anyone." (starts combat)
Lanius: "Your severed head will be raised above the streets of Vegas."
Depressing because its true
@@uberd3323
Painfully so.
This or the speech ending should be cannon just so New Vegas 2 can be a thing. and maybe they can even make an interesting quest line out of the legion if they do a sequel, fuck knows the legion needs more love, even if Lanius is the only reason why.
The legion is dead. The only way that the legion could have survived is if Caesar was cured of canser and actually mad New Vegas the new capital and then made some SERIOUS reforms to the leadership of the legion. Without that the death of "The Son of Mars" (Caesar) would leave a power vacume that even the legate would be unable to fill. Besides the legion is based on counquest, if they get into a prolonged war of atrrition (much like in F:NV) they WILL lose, since they mostly get new recruicts by taking new tribes + the entire legion numbers in in a few 1000 to 10.000 maybe 20.000 at best, the totall pop of the NCR is 700.000-1.000.000 (700.000 in F2, but they have grown since then). The legion is doomed to fail, no matter how cool a F:NV 2 would be...
The Thing "The Legion is dead" uh nope, your idea of what would happen is not cannon. sry m8. once it's cannon then you can say so.
Just stating the facts that the legion has some serious numbers stacked against them and that they lack an idear of what is going to happen when Caesar dies, the man is like a god to his people, but he is an oldsick god and he has only got about 5-20 years left to live, if he wins. I know it´s not canon, but fallout canon is pretty much always a "good karma" ending, so i doubt the legion will win
I don't get why these were "Barter" checks instead of a combination of Speech and Charisma checks (take that everyone who puts a 1 on Charisma)
because you're speaking about specifically money and economy. there is a speech option as well.
"I'll give you 200$ for you to fuck off"

You have to do the missons for the king in Freeside, specifically the one where you travel to Jacobstown. After that, then you've got Rex as a companion.
