    Is it just me or did he not address Starship? If SpaceX manages to build Starship, it's game over for all other rocket companies, right? They're building a rocket factory, aiming to build a Starship every single day... was a missed opportunity to ask him about that. Otherwise, very knowledgable and well-prepared reporter, great job! Outclassed the majority of interviewers talking about space, impressed.

    • @luigeribeiro
      @luigeribeiro Před 7 měsíci +6

      "If SpaceX manages to build Starship, it's game over for all other rocket companies, right?"
      no, starship is a "hype rocket", most of the goals set by the CEO aren't feasible, like 24 hours turnaround, a few millions of dollars per launch, low maintenance costs between launches, etc.
      "they're building a rocket factory, aiming to build a Starship every single day"
      LOL. That's not going to happen. Not even with the more faster approach using additive manufacture, like the one implemented by Relativity, it's not possible in a day, not in a week, not even in a month. Traditional methods of manufacturing takes even more time. As I said, Starship is a "hype rocket". Even if SpaceX could magically manufacture one complex rocket that size per day, the costs involved in that imaginary production line and hundreds of Starships per year don't justify the demand for launches in the market, in other words it wouldn't be economically viable.
      Starship might be cheaper in terms of U$/kg, but since it is massive, the cost per launch will be way above what competitors like Rocket Lab can charge.

      @@luigeribeiroSo you are not an investor - fine, but there are some knowledgeable big names who are, and most of the engineering talent flocks there. The methodology that makes all of Musks companies leading edge is not duplicable.

    • @David-yo5ws
      @David-yo5ws Před 7 měsíci

      'Niche Market's' That's what you are looking at here. Starship will not make it 'game over' for all rocket companies. It will make it game over for some, but you have to look at 'The Customer' of the Rocket Companies. NASA (and a lot of pharmaceutical and specialist bio-tech and engineering tech) are going for the establishment of a manned habitat on the Moon. Like the ISS, NASA always has 2 independent companies for supply and crewed launch's, so you don't get people 'stranded' in Space and don't stop.
      The Starship Programme is going to be focusing about 80% of their launch's for the SLS and HLS endeavours.
      There has never been a test on the human body at 1/3rd gravity, for a long term analysis, in order to get information on what effects that will have on it. Very important to have this, before you commit a manned mission to Mars for a journey of 6 months weightless, 14 months 1/3rd gravity and 6 months return flight, again in weightless conditions (unless some centrifugal rocket design is built).
      The other 20% of Starship will be to launch and complete the Starlink Network, as the Starlink V2's are too big for Falcon9 to carry profitably.
      The 'niche' that Rocket Lab is targeting, is for a sustainable, long term company, supplying their target customers. And as pointed out in this interview in about 3 or more places, the margins are very small. Even then, although 3D printed Rockets and differential throttled engines are being developed in a similar competitive market to Rocket Lab, what is their niche customer? Possibly not the same. And then you have geographic locations that add advantages for some of those rocket businesses. Some satellites are fragile or sensitive. Some military operations require dedicated launch's from specific global areas.
      So there's a big 'pie' and Peter Beck seems to be focusing his business model on the maximum cut of his 'niche customers'. And how many others make fiberglass rockets?
      Also, Rocket Lab has a big chunk of the reactionary wheel market. And so another big slice of the satellite market pie. So that adds to his 'small margin' profitability.
      Other's seem to 'rush' into making rockets. Peter seems to sit back and ponder and then evaluate, then calmly start making his rocket and associated products.
      Like the saying goes, it's the second mouse, that gets the cheese and I can see Peter having plenty to eat. Should wash down the hat nicely. 😉

      @@waynerussell6401 I'm a well educated person to know that it doesn't matter how good his engineering team is, HIS CLAIMS are a complete bulshit. Can you see the difference!? His engineers possibly laugh behind his back when he proposes something stupid, not technological and economically viable.
      He is not the one behind Starship's design, he is behind the marketing team, he overexaggerates everything. The knowledgeable big names you've mentioned know that.

    • @wick9427
      @wick9427 Před 7 měsíci

      @@luigeribeiro i think people make this argument because they completely underestimate the viability and importance of rideshare.
      you can argue that sending one 10 ton spacecraft to leo up on a vehicle designed for 150 is not viable, and that's all well and good. but it turns out there IS a clear market for satellite operators that are willing to wait and make compromises on inclinations to join a rideshare and fully abuse the insane lift capability with every launch. Beck and others scoffed at transporter missions, but spacex is making bank on those, and some of these smallsats are going into space for nearly half a million USD, which is simply way cheaper than launching on a dedicated ride meant for sats of that size, like electron.
      not knocking rocketlab btw, peter beck is right that there's plenty of operators that prefer speed over cost, as speed sometimes decides cost, but he's wrong about the idea that super heavy lifters like starship won't be able to actually reach their potential cost/KG figures, they will, eventually. musk is obviously way too optimistic about that timeline however, i suspect it will take at least 20-30 years for starship or a derivative to reach the kind of sticker price he talks about.

    Rocket Lab's current products are small launcher and space tugs with medium launcher as future developments. Spacex is currently bossing medium and heavy launch market while aiming for super lift capabilities with Starship. Blue's only available product right now is sub-orbital tourism and aiming for heavy launch capabilities. These companies are NOT in the same league.

    Rocket Lab’s CEO Peter Beck, explains why he’s going back on his word not to chase the medium- to heavy-lift rocket market. He doesn’t use these words, but isn’t it known that Rocket Lab is losing customers to the growing small-lift rocket companies? The question that wasn’t asked is if Rocket Lab will ever venture into the heavy lift market. I highly doubt it, because I don’t believe there will ever be enough customers who need a fairing size larger than 5 meters of the space tug.

But he likes competetion so he won't price them out. Even if it was 1 billion, you get 50% more payload for 25% the price of sls. You realize they have 4 starships and 3 boosters ready to go to the launch pad right now. You can see them in boca Chica today. They can produce one per month, several once the star factory is up and running. So starship will work. It is a matter of time and that time is near.

      @@Smiles10130 Yep, been hearing that for 10 years now. You know, how Lunar program in 10 years went from WWII ballistic missile to landing men on Moon and bringing back, while discovering and inventing everything for the first time ? Well Musk spent 10 years on fancy CGIs of Mars colonies, and painfully reinventing things known for decades, like water deluge systems , and still has nothing to show for it. They have nothing, just big stainless steel dildo, and two giant handles to jerk it off to explosion. If you haven't realized what starship is about despite such obvious visual cue, I don't think anything else can help you.

    Thats what i want 5 billion dollars for is to deploy transformer lego like pieces similar to a jigsaw puzzle that can transform an go together to create a space station that can then house an build ships for mining and resource gathering like a star ship the closer to the sun the more energy it can obsorb and use for fuel to power its smaller vehicles to reach other places.. all you need is electricity to travel in space at speeds not known on earth.. its a different propulsion system.. an we need to create our own communities and breeding programmes to create something similar to a country but in space.. its a space nation.. infinite resources.. an unlimited education.. creating our own communication networks our own internet so we are independant from the slavery of what we know as earth.. all these people trying to limit us an stop is from evolving by giving off fake and false information..

    Why dont you create your own telecommunications network throughout the globe and be a master of it.. just like elon did.. why dont you do that too.. and create a new network.. create your own empire why dont you want to rule as much of this place as possible then bounce off an create comm sats in other areas of the galaxy.. an create other civilisations that you can control an rule over.. DONT YOU WANT TO BE A KING? THATS PRETTY UN-AMBIOUS BRO

    You have limited the market of this by keeping it to earth.. you need to sell your products and services to other planets

    Great to get an update, but completely left out China's entry into all things space. It's almost impossible to compete (in everything) as they have more trained engineers at a cheaper price. Even innovative ideas are quickly absorbed into their endeavours.
    You can't fight ideologies with bombs and missiles, hopefully China's leadership and the rest of Capitalism will see the benefit to all through working and living together in peace and co-operation rather than domination (in all its forms) leading to futile wars and suffering. Learn the lessons from history.

      There are 'horses for courses' as the saying goes. Mahia LZ1 & LZ2 are in a unique location and there will always be a satellite business that can use that geographical position. The Florida coast is getting crowded and that interferes with launch dates and launch windows. Peter Beck picked that exact location, free from busy airports, shipping lanes, isolated from high density populations. For those very reasons, I don't think you are right. And once they find and fix the cause of the last Second Engine Start failure, the launch's are going to ramp up. Kiwi David 🇳🇿

    Oh come on, he went public to get cash, not to ensure multigenerationality. Space business is just not a good business yet, there's nothing wrong with saying that.
