THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) Revisited: DC Movie Review

  • Has there ever been a more highly anticipated movie that wound up bitterly dividing fans as prominent as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises? Coming hot on the heels of The Dark Knight, which is still widely considered the best superhero film ever made, expectations could not have been higher for Nolan’s trilogy capper. Yet, there were problems right from the get-go. The most obvious issue, of course, was that Heath Ledger, who so memorably played The Joker, was dead by the time The Dark Knight hit theaters. There was no way that the character could ever be included in the sequel without seeming opportunistic. Instead, Tom Hardy’s Bane would be the villain, Bane, but when an IMAX prelude was released before Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, there was a problem. People could not understand what the heck Bane was saying. Little did anyone know, this would become a recurring problem with Nolan’s films, with many criticizing Tenet for its indecipherable dialogue.
When the film eventually came out, it was overshadowed by the tragic Aurora shooting, but in time people would eventually come out in droves to see Nolan’s final film in the Dark Knight trilogy. But in the end, many fans didn’t like it, while others thought it was a masterpiece. To this day, some consider it the worst Batman movie, while some also consider it perhaps the best. So what’s the truth? It’s somewhere in the middle, as we explain in this episode of DC Revisited profiling The Dark Knight Rises. This episode was written and edited by Adam Walton, while Tyler Nichols narrated. What do you think of The Dark Knight Rises? Let us know in the comments!

It is a good movie. But one scene I can’t get past is at the beginning of the climax. When Batman and Bane are facing off. you see Batman out in broad daylight. In costume out in daylight. I really like The Dark Knight Rises. The movie was sadly a victim of circumstances, especially with Heath's passing, and it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Nolan brothers to top one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. And sure, Rises doesn't messure up to The Dark Knight (and that near flawless script it has, few movies do) but it's still a very good ending to this trilogy. It unquestionably has some lows here and there but the highs are really, really high. Tom Hardy's Bane is just iconic and the themes are as interestingly done as in the two predecessors. It's also a gorgeous movie to look at and Zimmer's score here is just fantastic.

Tough to follow up perfection. Many 3rd films face those challenges. Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie but it had to follow Empire Strikes Back, which is considered by many the best film. The Godfather 3 was a letdown compared to the 2nd movie. Empire and Godfather 2 are considered 2 of the best sequels ever and many consider them better than the first time. Rare sequels that top the original. The Dark Knight Rises faced that. You are following a massive hit, a iconic performance by Ledger. It was going to be brutally hard to match or top that. It's a good movie but not great. Honestly my third favorite of the Nolan trilogy. I will also say that despite some jokes about the Bane voice...Hardy's Bane was good and of course way better than the horrible Bane from Batman and Robin.

I respectfully disagree regarding Banes voice, I always found it improved the character. The Dark Knight Rises isn't as good as The Dark Knight but it's definitely a very good end to the trilogy.
I thoroughly enjoy this movie and I put it second in the trilogy. I really like Batman Begins as well and think it's a great film, its just my least favourite of the three.

  • @THE_BEAR_JEW
    @THE_BEAR_JEW Před 2 lety +8

There's definitely some stuff you can poke fun at in the trilogy. Like Batman's voice, that one actor's delivery of "No more dead cops," Scarecrow getting electrocuted, and Talia's death scene lol.
However, the Dark Knight Trilogy is probably the most important set of superhero movies ever. When Begins came out, we were in the gutter in terms of superhero movies. I think many people started to lose respect for them because of the overall average to bad quality of Fantastic 4, Blade Trinity, Daredevil, X-men Last Stand, Superman Returns, etc. Really the one great superhero movie during that time period was Spider-Man 2.
Batman Begins restored a lot of faith in superhero movies with the tone it took and with pretty much everyone involved wanting the movie to be taken seriously, which led to mass audiences going, "oh damn, we should take this seriously." It also ended with the Joker card. That made theater audiences go nuts. So you knew there was a lot of hype surrounding TDK.
While Iron Man would end up being a great movie in its own right, the hype for Iron Man was not as much as TDK. Many were waiting for Heath Ledger to fail and it was kinda expected that the character would not even be close to rivaling Nicholson's Joker. Iron Man flew under the radar and ended up being incredible, but I think TDK's massive success showed that superhero movies were viable franchises again, which I think led to Disney raising their eyebrow like the Rock and deciding to buy Marvel Entertainment. That in turn led to Marvel getting a blank check to go build the MCU, which is now literally the only cinematic universe that has ever been done well.
As far as TDKR, nobody would've faulted them for stopping with TDK after Ledger's death. You could tell they planned to bring Joker back for a 3rd movie but that was impossible. Thing is, given the significance of the Dark Knight movies outlined above, it was important to bookend the story properly. Them going with Bane and Talia as the villains to bring it all full circle was a great idea and I'm glad they did it. Yes, TDKR isn't on the same level as TDK in terms of pace, but it has it's own qualities that make it a must watch and an excellent end to a wonderful journey.

Other Tale of two Cities references include the characters named Stryver and Barsad. The note Gordon wrote being used by Bane to discredit him ala the Defarges using Doctor Manette’s note against him to denounce Charles Darnay. The “recalled to life” motif when Manette is released from The bastille, ala Bruce escaping the pit. And of course the “sacrifice” Batman makes at the end.

While hard to top Ledger and Eckhart in TDK, Hardy and Hathaway certainly gave them a run for their money. It gave such a powerful ending to the trilogy.

I love this film. It’s my favorite film of the trilogy and my favorite Batman film overall. It comes full circle with the trilogy and Bruce Wayne’s journey as Batman comes to an end while ensuring Gotham will have a protector be it a new Batman or Nightwing. Lot of what people consider to be plot holes are already established in the other films of the trilogy, such as how Bruce Wayne was able to travel without money or identification. If something like that was shown in the film, people would have complained how we already saw that in Batman Begins and we never needed to see him sneak onto a plane or boat or getting into Gotham, but since a scene like that wasn’t in the film many just say that’s a plot hole when it’s not. That’s just one example, but other criticisms are either things already established in the trilogy or are little nitpicks that doesn’t ruin the film alone or the overall trilogy. I know many will always prefer The Dark Knight as the best and that’s understandable, but I think a good number of people at the time of this films release anticipated quite a bit from this film and when it didn’t meet the expectations they had, it was written off by them as a sloppily made film that doesn’t live up the the previous film and that’s just unfortunate. People will say things like because Heath Ledger died, they had to avoid the Joker which was a problem with the film as they then had to come up with a new idea for the film so they could exclude the Joker entirely, when Nolan never intended the Joker to be in the film, mainly since he didn’t even have any kind of outline for a third film written until he revealed he had one done in December 2008, around the time The Dark Knight came to Blu-Ray and DVD, at which point Heath Ledger had already been dead for about 11 months. The Joker being in the film was never an option by the time writing the film began, especially when Nolan only focuses on one film at a time and doesn’t think about sequels when making a film as he wants to make the best film he can whenever he’s working on one. The most he ever discussed about multiple Batman films was back when he was talking to David Goyer and basically said how it would be interesting to make a Batman trilogy, but then didn’t think any more of that as he didn’t want to think he’d ever get to make more Batman films as he wouldn’t want to just put things in the film to lead to a sequel that may never come. Of course there will always be people who won’t like it and they’ll have their reasons, but there are a good amount of people who have taken another look at this film within the 10 years it’s been released and their thoughts have changed to a more positive perspective on this film and while it may not be their favorite of the trilogy or favorite Batman film, they don’t rank it or see it as low as they previously did. Christian Bale is still my favorite Bruce Wayne/Batman to this day, his performance in all three films was phenomenal. Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy did a fantastic job in their roles in all three films too. Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard did a great job in their parts as well. This is an incredible ending to the trilogy and I’m glad I saw it at midnight July 20, 2012 after seeing the previous films on the big screen leading up to The Dark Knight Rises when the Cinemark theater I went to had The Dark Knight Marathon. Seeing all three back to back on the big screen I believe helped me truly love and appreciate this film as much as I do. Thank you for making this video. I’m glad that after a decade, more people are able to accept this film for what it is as opposed to what they wanted it to be.

I liked DKR. It wasn't as tight as TDK, and was a victim of just how good the latter was, but it was a good film.
There are many issues with it but there are two that bug me the most:
    a) The whole Bruce knee 'issue', which is given attention in the first part of the film but is completely irrelevant to the story. Maybe the intention was showing Bruce was no longer in peak physical form after years of hiding but the emphasis on it early on, only to be solved quickly by a magic brace, makes it irrelevant. Neither the knee problem nor the magical high tech brace make any difference in the story (Bane would have broken him whether his knees were fine or not). Seemed uncharacteristic for a Nolan film to have a detail with no purpose in the story.
    b) The Tumbler. In the first movie Fox makes a reference that it was a prototype. Not only that but it was specifically described as a "bridging vehicle". All of a sudden in this movie there are two more Tumblers (one more than the two needed to tender the lines required for the bridge, as described in Begins). Not only that but they are armed with cannons. The function and history of the vehicle seemed completely forgotten for the convenience of the story. This begs the question also about why Bruce had never replaced the destroyed one with one of these. And before anyone says "Because he gave up after TDK and didn't have a need", yet he rebuilt the Bat cave post TDK so he could have moved a replacement in between too.

The only thing missing from this movie was the story of the entire police force being stuck underground for 6 months. How they survived. How they were led by one man who believed their time will come to rise up and retake control of the city despite the whereabouts of Batman being unknown. After the police win back control, Gordon appoints this man to be his new police chief. The officers name with his new title is Chief Miles Clancy O'Hara 😁👍

The movie is a lot if fun.
But it asks you to take leaps of logic that are really hard take seriously.
Especially in a film that tries establish its world as grounded and realistic.
Also the plot got a bit convulated.

I really like the first two Nolan Batman films. Sadly, I hate this movie. I really wish I could love it, because it has some great ideas and the bones of a great movie. I think it has no soul.
Selena Kyle was a really fun component and probably the life of the party, but Bane and that plot twist failed to get me invested in a philosophical back and forth over a vague and impersonal Gotham City the same way Joker and Ra's al Ghul did. Ultimately, as a villain Bane didn't provide anything for Batman to grapple with as a character, since his actions weren't even motivated by his own experience but by someone else's; and that someone was not only a harlot that betrayed Batman, but a character that existed in the background without much of a backstory until you find out Bane's perceived backstory was actually hers. And as a purely action focused villain, Bane's fights were little more than slow, lumbering slug fests.
And I can't get over the use of Alfred in this movie, either whining at Bruce to stop being a recluse or whining at him for going back out into the world because of Batman. The end where he sees Bruce retired is like seeing someone get an award for ending the career of someone I really liked, which is especially sour because I love Michael Caine's Alfred, and I hate this trilogy ended with me feeling a level of resentment for the character... although more so the writing than the character, because I feel the Alfred from the first two films would never behave this way.
My biggest issue with the film is Bruce's reasons for not being Batman anymore are so varied that, when he sees Gotham in need of Batman and decides to overcome his injuries, it's like none of those things ever mattered; so when he becomes Batman again he does so without much of an arc - aside from overcoming some physical obstacles. It just makes me wonder what the core reason of him not being Batman anymore was in the first place? And what was it that drove him to return? Some sense of destiny? Some sense of ability to make a difference? Was he upset he wasn't the hero Gotham needed? It's never explored.
So Batman just goes through the motions of a comeback arc without anything significant or profound about why he needed to undergo that arc or how he managed to overcome it. This movie is a collection of great ideas and set pieces, a great cast, a great director, some pretty great dialogue, and I even liked Bane's voice. It's a finely crafted film that showcases a wide range of mastery of the craft. But as far as the character goes, they forgot to give Batman a soul.

Dark Knight Rises officially turns 10 years old!!!
Still my #1 movie of 2012 and made $1.081 billion globally
I remember seeing it with my friends Tom and Liz opening weekend at shoppingtown
Sad it was the same time that shooting took place in Colorado
The movie itself was a terrific conclusion to Christopher Nolan's rebooted Batman series and considered the end of stand-alone comic book stories in cinema
Loved how Anne Hathaway as Catwoman carried enough emotional weight and was portrayed as an actual cat burglar and a con woman like in the comics despite her age difference with Christian Bale
This was also the first film in 3 movies to actually focus on Batman and his life slowly being taken apart bit by bit from his fortune to his corporate career to his physical strength and the title corresponds to his story arc learning to rise again from the ashes of defeat
Roger Ebert called it one of the best endings to a trilogy he's ever seen
It makes a statement on class warfare and equality; everything mostly being calculated and quantified given anyone with a cell phone can learn about anybody
Even the wealthy never consider the less fortunate taking back what little there is
Despite a number of plot holes popping up and some of the dialogue not packing enough punch next to clocking in at 3 hours I loved Tom Hardy's interpretation of Bane acting as an eco-terrorist even though his voice was mocked constantly on social media and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Blake learning Bruce Wayne's struggle to come back and fight for Gotham's fight against corruption
Much of it foreshadowed occupy Wall Street being very apolitical
Thought Marion Cotlliard as Talia Al Ghul was quite a surprise but happy it tied back to Batman Begins even if her defeat was weak
I was tearing up at the end too
Happy these movies popularized several trends in modern blockbuster cinema, from the modern concept of a “grounded, gritty reboot,” to superhero films attempting to gesture towards big political or socioeconomic concepts
The other good news is that Bale and Nolan are eager to come back for another installment to wrap up Bruce Wayne's arc
Ultimately this movie acts as cautionary tale about how any form of extreme populism can turn into fascism and terrorism

Personally, I think the problem with this movie was at this point, they were really straining on the whole "Realism" angle that the films were trying to sale and it was giving away to more outlandishness and it was clashing with the tone. I picked up on that feeling myself even when I first watched it. Not to mention this was one of those climaxes where newly introduced characters have a big, profound effect on Bruce that doesn't feel right after the efforts in the last two for continuity (Talia and Selena).

It worked for me as even when it simply polished some humor from Shagged Me, I hadn't seen Shagged Me yet, so it was all fresh and hilarious to me. Brought out my 10 year old's sense of humor. I've never understood people's issue with Bane's voice. It's a little muffled but I can easily make out everything he's saying and my hearing isn't that great.
Overall this film struggles because it has to live up to the greatness of it's predecessor and you can tell they felt like the only way to compensate for that was to go bigger.
Also, the class warfare stuff needed to be more of the center of the film and less about nuclear bombs and secret assassins.
If I was writing this, I would've made the Court of Owls the main villains and have them manipulating the public into a class uprising much the way corporations took over movements like the Tea Party and turned them into the MAGA's we're stuck with now.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of, id not the, most overrated movies of all time.
Nolan's" Gritty realism" in this movie was actually a collection of gritty and incredibly unlikely to impossible events that require more suspension of disbelief than many time travel movies. Almost nothing in the movie makes sense. From the unlikely odds of anyone being fooled by the ridiculous take down of the CIA plane in the opening, to the ridiculousness of Batmen teaming up with someone who is lowly enough to torture an, apparent" cripple. To the ludicrous idea that anyone would accept falsified stock trades that went down during a daylight takeover of the Gotham stock exchange. To the idiotic premise that a multi billionaire apparently does not actually own anything (except his ancestral home) but instead apparently buys everything ( art, cars ect) with loans. To the unrealistic idea that the utility companies would shut off utilities a few days after someone becomes bankrupt, instead of after a few months of non payment. To the unbelievable logic of sending EVERY POLICE OFFICER IN THE CITY into the sewers. To the absolutely preposterous concept that said police would not only survive about 6 months trapped in said sewers( part of which was during the winter ) , but would come out of the sewers after all of that time healthy and hale, wearing pristine uniforms , and sporting perfect shaves and haircuts, and then them being in such fighting shape that they overwhelm an army of much better fed, much better rested, and much better armed( as in assault rifles against batons) minions of Bane. To the finale of Batman getting 6 miles away from the bomb in less than a minute. And all of that isn't even counting the laughable idea that Robin found commisioner Gordon in moments in a sewer system as large as Gotham's or that he somehow knew that Wayne was Batman because once, many years ago, he saw a certain look in his eyes.
No .This movie was not a 9 out of 10. It was not even close.
No. This movie was not " gritty and realistic", but unbelievable and ridiculous .

I loved the chase at the ending with the Batwing. Taking the time and going through the trouble of doing live effects is so worth it. That's one of the reasons why the Dark Knight trilogy is so good. The lack of CGI. CGI should be avoided if possible. The fight scenes were a little weak and felt rushed but still worked for me. I didn't have much of an issue with Bane's voice personally. I I love the rough and tumble Englishman who's read a lot of books type voice he had. Cool review. I never saw this trilogy, but naturally heard lots of praise for it. I'm more of either a Micheal Keaton or Adam West kinda guy, but I do think since this Batman had so much of a following and came with a preexisting backstory, it have been nice to have had him be the one in the Superman v Batman and Justice League movies (though Ben Aflack looked and sounded cool). Particularly it 'd have been interesting to see how Nolan's very grounded vigilante coped with a world that now had super powers, aliens and even a superhero who (should have been) his polar opposite in most ways. But, hey its all lead to us getting our Micheal Keaton Batman back; now let's just hope us fans of his aren't disappointed by something mocking or unrecognizable.

A rich underappreciated rich literary narrative that taken with the trilogy shows the timeline of American response to 9/11.
The fear toxin in the burrows shows how fear gripped our society. The over reach of authority against an unknown evil, and trying to bring security through it a lie. The rise of populism and and the dangers of destabilizing society for perceived power brings us to were we are now.
Also the progression of genre from film to film, A Samurai adventure film, a Crime Epic Film, an Epic War Film.
For me, it's a perfect trilogy.

Nolan didn’t do a rehash of The Dark Knight like so many people wanted. He stuck by his guns and made the movie he wanted. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are so different, tone and story wise. Begins was a big summer blockbuster and more of a traditional superhero movie. Dark Knight was a gritty crime thriller, almost film noir. Rises is something else entirely. In a lot of ways it’s an apocalyptic story. The end of the world so to speak.
