THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) Revisited: DC Movie Review

  • As much as fans loved Matt Reeves’ noirish take on The Batman, ask many folks what the best ever big-screen Batman movie is, and they’ll answer Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. A legendary sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins, this epic permanently changed how comic book movies were perceived. Until then, they were seen as fun potential blockbusters but without any artistic merit. When The Dark Knight came along, suddenly, critics started to take the genre seriously.
The movie also became a pop culture phenomenon, skyrocketing director Christopher Nolan to the top of the A-list, establishing Christian Bale as perhaps the definitive screen Batman (to that point), and making Hans Zimmer’s iconic score so influential blockbusters are still knocking it off to this day. However, the most celebrated aspect of the film is, without a doubt, Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker. Tragically, he would pass away before the film’s release, but he would win a posthumous Oscar and become a pop culture icon whose status hasn’t diminished in the 14 years since the film’s release.
In this episode of DC Revisited, we take a look at the making of Nolan’s classic, examining how the film was cast, the reaction from the MPAA (who almost gave the film an R-rating) and its lasting impact on the pop culture, with it being more than merely a hit film. It was a bonafide phenomenon.

The Character "James Gordon" (Gary Oldman) was the BEST that I have seen in all Batman Movies so far, including "The Batman".
There was a "sincere concern and humanity" with this Character and Actor in"The Dark Knight" that no body could touch...
From what I "have heard" there may be two other B-Man films in the near future using Pattinson as B-Man.
I am hoping for evolution of our favorite characters of the DC/B-Man Universe...
Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Riddle (evolved), Scarecrow, Bane and Poison Ivy!
Oh the Evil that "could be"...

This film changed my way of looking at film, not only as entertainment, but most importantly as an art form. I was 12 years old in 2008, to paint you a picture of my taste in film back then, I used to think that the first Transformers and Spider-Man 3 where amazing films, obviously I kept watching the action scenes only. Then one day my mom took me to the opening day of The Dark Knight and everything changed. Something happened after the film ended, I was blown away by it, the story was an emotional roller-coaster, I knew that I've seen my new favorite film, it changed me and it changed my thought of what a movie could be. Ever since this is still my favorite film of all time.

The first show was partially ruined by a pair of punks sitting next to me who woud not stop texting and fucking with their phones. After about a few minutes into the movie and them not responding to courteous requests to knock it off, they were both removed summarily, by myself and another patron and finally the lazy-ass ushers who finally showed up.. One punk threw a swing at me, missed, and hit an usher. I threw th punk to the ground via bouncing his head off the back of a seat.

I'm surprised you missed this, but Ledger's Joker voice was based off of Tom Waits. And Ledger was a friendly member with the crew, hence the famious photo of him playing with a skateboard over Christian Bale's body. Interviews with Michael Jai White said he would perform his scene with Ledger and he was very giving as an actor even if the amount of work it took to put on the make up would have been replaced with a double in most films. And he should know being Spawn.
Glad you noticed the Adam West references, there's a bunch in there that often get missed but are really obvious, like Joker's mask or when he abducts the Gotham News Crew.

I just remember like so many people the backlash to Heath Ledger being announced as the actor to play the joker and all the horrible backlash and nasty comments such as getting a gay cowboy ( in reference to brokeback mountain) to play the role and thinking this too much negativity and people being over the top cos I liked Heath Ledger (personal favourite was his role in the knights tale up to that point)however my personal views was he would have to do a smashing job to beat Jack Nicholsons performance as the joker as me and my brother as laughed and enjoyed his performance. But man after we came out of the cinema saying that movie should be renamed the joker cos my god what a ground shaking performance it was by the great late Heath Ledger just I don’t know where to begin man but also taking his performance aside the supporting cast such as Gary Oldman and Aron Eckhart ( extremely underrated in this movie) the problem this movie had was given Heath Ledgers performance it overshadowed Christian Bale, he did a great job, but just paled in comparison. I would like think in a different universe a scenario where Heath Ledger played the joker opposite to Robert Pattinsons brilliant and my favourite portrayal of the Batman 🤔

It’s a shame that Ledger was really noticed and appreciated after his Joker role. He was known as the “pretty boy Brokeback Mountain guy”. Pretty much how casual movie watchers see Pattison, the “Twilight guy”; even though Pattison has had amazing roles and should already be nominated for an oscar. Let’s not forget “the Gay cowboy” was nominated for that character and was amazing along with Gyllenhall. This is why I don’t stereotype actors. Matthew McConaughey in the early 2000’s was the typical pretty boy in dumb chick flicks but I got to see flashes of greatness in the 90’s with Amistad and A Time To Kill. McConaughey later went back to serious dramas and won an oscar for Dallas Buyers Club.

I'm in the waaaaay small minority that feels like TDK is a complete let down (outside of Health Ledger's performance). I don't like that Gotham itself has no real Identity of itself. And I feel like the story tries and fails to replicate the story structure of No Country for Old Men Men. As I feel like TDK actually wants Harvey Dent to be the actual Protagonist (similar to Tommy Lee Jones in NCFOM) as the Joker AND Batman are two unchanging forces (something that the joker even alludes to) and Harvey having the only real character arc. Only his story really falls flat, and his ultimate change to two-face is not very impactful.

Sorry but you are so far off . First off No Country For Old Men was straight up boring trash. Also there is almost no dialogue in No Country. So I don't get the comparison.

@@feck2594 story structure. No country's main character is Tommy Lee Jones, despite being in the film for maybe 20 minutes, it is about him and how the case and changing times affect him. he is the main character of the film. I feel like TDK did the same thing as far as structure is concerned, Batman really isn't a character and the Joker isn't a character.. And the Joker even says it at one point, that he is an unstoppable force, and Batman is an unmovable object, and the real character, at least to me, that seems to have an arc.. was Harvey Dent, but his story line was the weakest of the three.
I also feel that the movie is about 1/2 hour too long. and perhaps the rush to turn Dent to Two-face in that last 1/2 didn't do his character and storyline much justice.

They didn't have plans for a 3rd movie.
Originally they threw around the idea of making Joker the villain of the second movie and two-face being the villain for the 3rd. But they instead had Harvey as a secondary villain in the second movie.
Nolan has said that after all 3 of the movies he wasn't sure he'll make another. He was prepared to end with TDK even if Ledger lived.
