    The Audio Technica ATH-M50X are some of the most widely recommended headphones out there, considered by many to be the absolute best all-around performers in the sub $150 range. Less well known, is the rest of Audio Technica’s M-series line, all placed in separate price ranges, each aimed at a unique type of customer. The ATH-M40x, at least outside of audiophile circles, still tend to fly under the radar within discussions of high-performance low-cost cans. At $99, The M40s serve as the little brother to the M50s, one place lower in the lineup of the M-series of monitor headphones. These headphones were first brought to my attention after reading numerous comments on my videos about the ATH-M50xs, recommending I check out the M40s because of their flatter signal, allegedly less punchy, more balanced sound, and ultimately considerably lower price. It was hard for me to imagine a $99 pair of closed backs really performing so well, so I decided to get my hands on a pair and listen for myself. To say these have impressed me, would be to put it lightly.
    These headphones share a similar design with the rest of the m-series line, striking me as something of a cross between the m20s and m50s. To be completely honest, these things do feel rather cheap and a far cry from any of the more premium headphones I have used. With that being said however, I must acknowledge that I think these are a situation where the far majority of what you are paying for is sound, as opposed to design. They feel somewhat cheaper than the M50xs, and the earcups didn’t swivel as smoothly in my experience. There are many popular consumer headphones which manage to pull off flashy designs but cost 3 times as much as the M40s and sound nowhere near as nice. For around ear headphones, they are not the most comfortable, and can cause the listener some ear fatigue beyond a certain point. Many have looked to replacing the ear pads with higher quality options, some going as far as to order Audio Technica’s own MSR7 pads as a solution to the lackluster comfort provided by the M40s. I didn’t do this however, and would say that while these are not the most comfortable pair of cans in the world, they are simultaneously not unusable and are satisfactory when you consider the excellent sound these things put out. Compared to some other high performance/low cost headphones I have seen, the M40s look fine when being worn walking around. They aren’t exactly stylish, but around ear headphones with large drivers rarely are. On the whole, while they are not a particularly premium feeling cans, this can be forgiven when you hear how they sound.
    As is the case with virtually all Audio Technica products, sound performance is the strongest aspect of M40xs. To really get the most of out of these things, I used them with my usual setup, the Audient ID44 streaming high fidelity tracks through tidal. Additionally, I listened a bit through my iPhone SE (I know, an old phone, but at least it has a headphone jack). These headphones were effortlessly powered through the Audient’s powerful amp, however they were also more than usable with the iPhone, but definitely perform much better when using a high-quality DAC-Amp set up. The ATH-M40x are tuned to be pretty flat, offering a more neutral sound which comes off as far less punchy and perhaps exciting than something like the M50s. Natural, would be the right word to describe their sound. There is a consistent smoothness when listening to music, and a genuine balance between low, mid, and high ends. As someone who uses the reference grade open back ATH-R70xs as my daily drivers, the fairly flat signal from the M40s was a pleasant surprise. Sound signature really comes down to taste at the end of the day, so what sounds the best to me may well not sound the best to you. These headphones have a very clear, yet by no means overpowering base. When compared to the M50x, my point of reference these have a significantly less prominent bass. While the M50x are certainly more balanced than your average pair of consumer headphones, in the world of high-performance

    I see headphones as kind of like choosing what kind of drink to have with your meal.
    The M40x's are like water. They're neutral, clear, and won't colour your experience, for the better or worse. Water won't ruin your palate while eating your delicious meal, and the M40X's won't ruin the sound of the song you're listening to.
    But sometimes, you want something with a bit more flavour. The M50x are like a soda pop. It's more exciting, colourful, and can go great with some things. The M50x's can enhance the sound of some genres of music, like how soda pop goes great with some foods, like a hamburger and fries. However, you typically wouldn't want soda pop when you're at a fine dining restaurant, like how the m50x's may not sound their best with more subtle genres of music.
    A nice set of open back headphones, such as the HD 600s, Audeze LCD 4s, or ATH R70x are like a fine wine. They help sweeten your experience, especially with things that require more subtlety.. However, too much of it, and you'll be obnoxious to everyone around you. Wine can really tie a great meal together, but it isn't always the best idea to have it with something like fast food. Likewise, open headphones sound lovely with more subtle music, such as classical, acapella or acoustic, but often lack the bass response for rock, metal, hip hop and EDM.
    The ATH M70xs are like cough syrup. They're harsh, no one wants to have them, and are only used when a problem needs to be solved. When you're sick, you take cough syrup, not because it tastes good, but because it will help with your sickness. The ATH M70xs are not to listen to music, but to search for problems in a mix or master, as the accentuated highs will reveal many flaws that the other headphones can't. They're kind of like the Yamaha NS-10 studio monitors, which were initially intended as consumer bookshelf speakers, but have such harsh treble that studio engineers use them to correct flaws in a mix. The idea is that if you can get a song to sound decent on a pair of NS-10s then they'll sound good on pretty much anything, and I think Audio Technica had the same approach with their M70xs.
    I have been watching all of the videos in your ATH M series reviews and I have been thoroughly enjoying them. I already have a set of fairly neutral headphones (NAD Viso HP50s, I highly recommend checking them out, as they take the approach of "neutrality" fairly differently than many other headphones) and I wanted something a bit different. Something that is coloured different than my current set of headphones, and something that is rugged enough so it can be used for drum tracking (I've heard that running some consumer headphones like the HP50s way too loud can blow a driver, but not so on something like the m50x). I already owned a pair of m50s so I decided to get another pair that will be here in a few days. I also purchased a pair of SHP 9500s, for when I'm playing a game, don't want to use my main speakers, or just want to listen to something relaxing. Again, amazing videos.

    Just from someone who has owned the M40x since 2015 eand has used them extensively... The build quality is a mixed bag: plastic structure, ear cup adjustment and cables still work as on day 1. However, te same cannot be said of the headband and ear pads, which I have worn down to the foam. Still sound great though, so I just picked up a new of ear pads and I'm ready to continue using them for another 5 years!

    Good review! I have had both the M50X's and the M40X's and personally preferred the M40s because of how much more balanced they were! The M50s have too much bass and highs for me. Still the better option for all round entertainment though rather than mixing and editing which is what the M40s are better for.

    One helpful thing for these if you brake the coil cable which is easy to do accidentally, is to make the long non coil cable shorter when you use it in your pocket by using a good velcro thing you could get from Amazon and put a nice cicular thing for some of the cable. In 2019 there are still the best headphones to me and are worth the price. I have tried many in a store. They don't look weird compared to some to me aswell. Nice review and funny last shot of you carrying the headphones dude. I also laughed when you were like "I know, an old phone". That is still a decent phone you have.

  • @clumsy124
    @clumsy124 Před 4 lety +3

    Have had them for 4 years and they are still in incredible shape. It doesn't scratch anywhere, the leather on the head part is still in good shape, although I believe the cushion has become flatter over the years. The build quality is no joke. I mostly use them at my computer but when I travel with them I rarely ever use the pouch that comes with and just throw them in my bag. No sign of deterioration apart from the earcuffs that have worn out quite a bit but are easily replaceable for 10$ or so on amazon. The coil cable is very practical, I never used the other one that is like 6 ft or 10ft long. Everything about this package is durable as far as my experience goes.
    As for the sound, I'm no expert in audio, but I do very much notice how flat the sound is as they a monitor headphones. Even I who like good bass in headphones, I still am satisfied with them but I would've liked to get more bass out of them. My sister has gone through 2 pairs of Beats solo since I've bought those and they're still in very good shape.
    The clicking sound they make when they fold is so satisfying.

They are so clear everytime I listen to a song I have heard on other headphones I hear ten times more detail than I did before and i just don't want to stop listening!! I'm personally a bass freak and I love bass. These at first I was like meh but now I just like them more and more(ps:for anyone wondering if you need an amp because they are studio headphones you do not. Also if you have a samsung device go to settings and there is an equalizer that you can tweak to your preferences and also a option to upscale the audio, dolby atmos, and tube, also concert which is cool and even a test to make a custom sound stage just for you! Trust me messing with them can make huge adjustments to sound. So before you judge based on out of the box check your setting and tweak them and you will be in heaven! Look up the 3.5mm mod for these. While you do have to open them up, it's not hard to do and you can always undo it if you need to. There's just a piece of plastic inside which limits you to that one type of locking 2.5mm jack. Once you take it out, you just fit in a slim 2.5 to 3.5mm adapter, most of which you won't even see after you're done. You can always remove that adapter and use the 2.5mm cords, they just won't lock into place anymore.

    The M40x was my first nice headphone 5 years ago. I always thought it was "neutral". Made sense since prior to that I had some random JVC Super Dupa Bass Mega Omph BASS BOMBA headphone. It's bass was boosted and by a lot. The M40x seemed so neutral and flat in comparison. Since then I moved on to bigger things but the little M40x will always have a special place in my heart. Oh and BTW, the M40x is not neutral. It has a boost in the mid bass, another one in the voices and yet another one in the treble. It's a W shaped headphone.

Will my 100-watt amp turned to max volume, I will only hear a clean low volume with no harsh or distorted sounds, and no loud danger of hurting my hearing.
