Of all the videos I have done this is the one I LOVED the most. Sitting down, chatting with Jon - was the greatest pleasure and I cannot wait to do it again soon.

Jon has been with me 5 or 6 months but I already feel like he is very much part of the furniture and shares all my passion for what we do here - all be it in an incredibly relaxed and level headed way (thank god one of us is!)
Jon has just come back from a trip to Dowina guitars where he was taken by the UK Distributor (Thanks Steve @ CUK). The Dowina story has been beautifully unfolding during the course of the year and they thought it would be lovely for us to see their workshop first hand. Whilst I would have loved to go, I am not a great traveller without my family and I knew Jon would make me proud - so I packed his bags and off he went!!!
I have deliberately not spoken to him in the 24 hours he has been back as I wanted to get the experiences recorded 100% honestly and in the moment. I couldnt wait to hear what he had to say because based on the texts I was receiving back from him on his trip - he hadn't been dissapointed!
I think the results speak for themselves - an honest down to Earth chit chat about our exciting project with some Wonderful people at Dowina. Being able to share my love of guitars with Jon is a blessing - and to have Dowina introduced to my collection is a total privilege.

My student has a 400 something euro Dowina, it is by far the best acoustic guitar I've ever played in my life, and I played on 2000+euro guitars that were shit compared to that little Dowina.
For a long time i've played 700e Dowina that absolutely destroyed everything I've tried. Just amazing!

Having one on order, I’m working my way through all the Dowina videos! Enjoyed this one and Jon has been very helpful in starting the ball rolling. Interesting comments about wood ‘imperfections’ and I did see the clip on the Eastman video, I wouldn’t criticise anyone who wants ‘perfection’ (each to their own) but I would certainly go for sound first and would actually welcome some visual ‘character’ within reason. Cant wait for mine to arrive, hope the world is a different place by then and I can go to the shop!

That 'the wood has to look perfect' thing is odd. I recently got an Eastman E1 OM Classic Limited from you, and after playing it a while I realised the reason that they shaded the top is because the Spruce has a knot in it at the edge of the soundboard and it was therefore not cosmetically perfect. It doesn't detract from the guitar at all, quite the opposite, it's the best acoustic I've owned in 20 years of playing.

Love the video guys but you got it wrong with the Taylor fret-boards, if you want jet black ebony from Taylor it needs to be a special build order otherwise shelf stock comes with marble ebony. Bob Taylor wouldn`t have it any other way.
bee gee noooo. Look for a stock Taylor 314ce . If this is a ‘thing’ it’s a very new development as Taylor boards were always jet black in my era selling them

Full credit to Taylor Guitars but, hey....I still love Richards Guitars.
bee gee hmmmm I think I may have been misunderstood. Can you give me the time stamp where I said that. My memory of what I would have said is that bob Taylor and Stan both agree on the issues relating to sustainability and consumer demand for black ebony. Did I say something. Disparaging? Just trying to understand the context of what you are telling me? The quote from Taylor backs up my pint about the issues with cosmetics and until that statement came out the boards definitely were black. Did I suggest Taylor boards are all pure black ebony? I need to find the bit where I mention it to understand what you are saying I got wrong. Sorry to be so easily confused!!!
I think this might stem from me misunderstanding Stan when he was telling us about it on the day! It was ebony from Bob Taylor, but in hindsight it may have been something to do with his ebony project - rather than being Taylor cast offs, which I thought they were! Either way it still sits nicely with the discussion about making guitar building more sustainable - It's SO refreshing to see a brand as big as Taylor taking a stand and trying to force the industry in a better direction environmentally.
Personally - I absolutely love when the wood on a guitar looks as woody as possible! So - to me - those boards I saw on Stan's table were jawdroppingly beautiful, so I'm glad that we're getting to see ebony like that, instead of plain black!

I don't actually really focus on them. Its a lovely idea but it undermines their brand in my opinion. I have told them my heart is in THEM not focusing on beginner / budget market. Let Cort do that themselves. Pomona GAC is made in house by them and your question highlights EXACTLY the damage I think it does to their brand.

Fantastic video chaps! So glad Jon got a chance to go over to Dowina and see the great work they do there. Stan is an acoustic guitar alchemist. Spend an hour with that guy and all you want to play is a Dowina guitar :) I am in the very lucky position of being able to play some of these guitars every day so I know how fantastic they are. The attention to detail that goes into each one is incredible!

Richards Guitars , it’s hard to put into words, but I was getting frustrated when watching the video, sometimes your interruptions seemed unnecessary and I felt were rude to Jon. Not everything was bad as a lot of the interaction was what you’d call normal. Maybe I’m just used to your rambling with yourself (which is OK) but again it seemed maybe disrespectful to Jon ( I don’t know) perhaps it’s just my dour Scottish upbringing.. so don’t take it to heart as this is a personal feeling, which may say more about me than you, as I had read previous comments and they were all positive. Just didn’t work fo me. Sorry. But I can’t wait to see a guitar review on Dowina
Thomas chalmers thank you so much for your genuine feedback and that is exactly what I need. It raises a brilliant point. In real life I am totally terrible at jumping in. I have to forceably stop myself when something springs into my mind. It’s partly childish enthusiasm combined with my awareness that my memory is so terrible that I am worried I will forget what my point is. Also I am so keen to take on what he is saying and so desperately don’t want to miss anything that I feel if I say my bit I can then focus completely on what he is saying. It’s a kind of dysfunction of mine!!!! I totally understand your point of view and it’s something I constantly apologise for when I am excited about a subject. Hmmmm thank you for making me aware. I will have to really consider this and in fact watching my interactions back is fascinating as it’s not often I ever have the chance to witness myself in a conversation. One thing I promise is it’s not from a lack of respect as Jon is just the most wonderful and knowledgeable person who I am bless to have working with me. He is also someone who makes me feel comfortable about being me. He seems to totally respect and understand my mannerisms and we share the same values in life I would like to believe. I will sincerely take on your comments and thank you for taking the time to reply.
Richards Guitars , no problem, in fact I’m a bit like you, I worked for many many years as a quality control inspector in the oil industry, where I made daily decisions on product quality, is it right or is it wrong, when it’s wrong I can’t help offering my opinion on how to rectify it. And when I feel hard done by I can’t stop myself challenging it to the n’th degree. I know this has got you into trouble in the past. I don’t like to be critical for the sake of it, it was meant to be constructive, and if you agree with some of it then hopefully it was worth while.
Enough said, it’s time to open a bottle of wine, have a great weekend
