The threat of Christian Nationalism looms large as MAGA Republicans try desperately to erode the separation of church and state. However, it seems like a lot of the Americans who claim to be Christian Nationalists have no idea what it would mean for the country. The Damage Report's John Iadarola breaks it down.

This country was founded by people who came here to escape religious persecution by their government. They did not want anyone to face that again. They codified the separation of Church and State in the US Constitution, so the government is prohibited from meddling in the church, and the church is prohibited from meddling in the government. This does not mean people of faith cannot be part of the government, and conduct themselves according to their morals and religious principals. However , they may NOT force others to practice their religion, be it Christianity, Islam, Judaism or any other, and laws must be made based upon the provisions written in the constitution, not upon religious rules. This is for the protection of freedom of religion for ALL citizens, not just Christians. If you wish to be a citizen of the United States of America, the Constitution is the rule-book with which you must comply.

So a treaty with a gang of pirates "is the document the United States Constitution was built on"? Glad to see British education sucks just as badly as American education.
The US Constitution was ratified on June 21, 1788 (for the Brits in the room that means that it was written, published, distributed, and enough states had signed off on it that it because the official law of the land). The "Treaty of Tripoli" was signed November 4, 1796, more than 8 years later. So it's kind of hard to make any reasonable argument that the US Constitution was "built on" the Treaty of Tripoli.

If they had any kind of education they would know wearing a religious symbol is protected. What they can't do is force someone else to practice their religion. They can't preach their religion in public schools. A teacher can have a bible in their desk and read it on their break, but they can't use it to teach their class unless they are teaching a lesson on cultural influences or a religious class that teaches about all religions or something similar. They can't promote their religion in public schools. Congress cannot make laws that establish a religion. JUST TO BE CLEAR.............................................
The phrase "separation of church and state" doesn't appear in the US Constitution. However, the First Amendment's Establishment Clause states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion". This is often interpreted to mean the Constitution requires the separation of church and state. The First Amendment also includes the Free Exercise Clause, which protects citizens' right to practice their religion as they choose.
The metaphor of a "wall of separation between church and state" originated in a letter from Thomas Jefferson. Chief Justice Morrison Waite first used the phrase in the 1878 case Reynolds v. United States. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black also famously invoked the "wall" metaphor in Everson v. Board of Education.
The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, requires states to guarantee the First Amendment's rights, including the prohibition against establishing a religion.

The founding fathers were predominantly not Christian. Thomas Jefferson rewrote the Bible removing any signs of Jesus' divinity and James Madison was more a Unitarian believer. They mostly all believed in God, but specifically weren't Christian. Separation of church and state is critical. Remember that 'In God We Trust' on money and 'Under God' in the pledge of allegiance weren't there until the 1950s. E pluribus unum seems more fitting a phrase to stand on. I actually like nationalism and patriotism, but MAGA ruined the true meaning by pushing Christianity as their pillar and not just accepting freedom of religion.
