The return of Burgess Meredith as Mick in the form of a flashback was one of the strongest parts of Rocky V.

Rocky’s son in this one is played by Sylvester Stallone’s real son, Sage Stallone. Sage sadly passed away in 2012. Whilst this movie isn’t the best Rocky movie, it does have some sentimental value to it, I feel.

Couple of fun facts: Burt Young (Paulie) received an Oscar nomination for the first Rocky film. He was also a boxer while in the Marines and had a record of 32-2. He turned professional and compiled a record of 17-0 and, at the time, was managed by the legendary Cus D'Amato (who would later train and manage Mike Tyson).
Damn a 32-2 record against marines and 17-0 professionally he was quite the boxer it seems

This movie is definitely underrated. It is a great continuation of the characters, but unfortunately it's also the only Rocky movie that doesn't make you immediately want to go work out afterwards.
I believe Stallone intended this to be the end of the *Rocky* story but wasn't happy with it so came back sixteen years later and made *Rocky Balboa* to give Rocky a proper sendoff.
Not without it's issues, but is a good movie.

It was. A lot of hate this movie got at the time of the release is because we all thought it was the end of the Rocky story and as that it just did not work.
Rocky Balboa was an incredible bookend to the series.

In fairness to Tommy Morrison, his act was satisfying which is notable because he was a boxer as a professional and for him to act in front of Stallone and others really late in the Rocky film franchise is not an easy feat.
I love the street fight scene, it takes you back and reminds you how Rocky was street tough.
Another strong point in this movie - the late Sage Stallone's performance as Rocky's son is still good and dramatic to watch.
I knew Tommy Morrison when I was younger. He was an incredibly kind person. It’s heartbreaking what he went through in his last few years
He couldn't get off the drugs! His life he manifested was BECAUSE of ROCKY...
He was his own worst enemy. His second worst was the media hype. Tommy should have stayed off the roids and been a cruiserweight. He would have been the champ there for as long as he wanted.

In the original script, Rocky was supposed to die from the hits that he received from Tommy. That kind of makes the flashes that Rocky was getting make a little more sense.
Exactly. That’s one reason it’s kind of a strange ending. They changed direction during filming and Stallone was never really happy with it. Which is great because I love Rocky Balboa as an ending

The boy who plays the son in this movie is his real-life son, Sage Stallone
Sage was born in 1976 but sadly died in 2012 due to a heart attack!
He was 36 when he passed away.
Sage was also in the movie ' Daylight ' playing a criminal i believe in the movie.
Rocky five isn't one of the best but not a bad movie.

That is what hits me the most in this movie. I remember when this came out and was the first rocky movie i got to see in a theater. I was more hyped for the music then the movie but it does get better with every watch. You look more for the things not shown on scene.

He worked for the second time with his father in the movie Daylight (1996) where he played a convict, who was trapped along with other criminals in that collapsed tunnel in New York.

I remember an interview where Sylvester Stallone admitted this movie was a cash grab, but he wasn't satisfied with the way he ended it so he made "Rocky Balboa" so he could end the Rocky franchise right. Can't wait to see your reaction to that one and your review!😃
I think had he used the alternate ending, maybe Sly would've felt better about this one. Be cool if he did a Director's Cut for this one like he did for Rocky IV, since most people haven't seen the alternate ending
Funnily enough it is one of the most expensive movie of the franchise. I really think part 3 and especially 4 look more of a cashgrab than this one to be honest. Very cartoonish movies, they remind me of First Blood sequels. Rocky 5 felt like an indie movie again, I think there is a lot to improve in it but at least it has heart.
In an interview Stallone mentions how Rocky V was delving into their being glory in losing, and I think it did a good job as a whole showing the career of boxer with his injuries being permanent along with his poor spending habits catching up with him

They should have done just a little better showing how Tommy was being manipulated by Duke. They didn't make him likable enough.
I’m glad yall liked it. Most people say it’s a bad movie because they heard everyone else say it was bad. It wasn’t the first 4, but it was still good. And the closing credit montage is classic.

Rocky 4 was the absolute biggest and most dire fight of Rocky's life,and it was the most emotional fight for him,to the point that he doesn't even want to think about it later on.
While someone watching it before the other movies wouldn't really think much of it,the same can be said for all the movies past the first.
I love Rocky 5 though,it definitely didn't deserve the hate.
People were just used to seeing Rocky in the ring and coming out on top against impossible odds,so that poisoned people's view of this movie.
Guys! Really like that you're watching them all. I like when people watch everything and decide for themselves if they like it or not. Skipping movies outright leaves out big chunks of history, regarding the characters involved.
I appreciate how open-minded both of you were when watching this movie; you didn't just trash it like most people do.
Agreed! It was really refreshing to see some actual analysis of the story plot points, and characters themselves. They were still honest about it taking a turn there at the end, but they found so many things to appreciate about the movie, which I think shows what us die-hard fans of the series can take from it as well
Most people trash it because they had years to form a solid opinion on it, and weren't just first watchers.
Rocky V was directed by John Avildsen, the same guy who directed the original Rocky (and won Best Director at the Academy Awards) as well as the entire Karate Kid film trilogy.
Avidsen didn't want to do it because he already did the original Rocky & the Karate kid movies however he was convinced when he saw that Rocky was dying cause it was something different. However Stallone changed his mind midway & Avidsen blame this as to why the movie failed. Personally I'm glad it didn't happen and I enjoy this movie also
Unfortunately he was closer to the one that did Karate Kid 3 and not the first two.
@@Dacre1000 I love Rocky V but pretty much hate Karate Kid 3 mainly because it was hard for me to believe Daniel would be afraid of Mike Barnes after fighting Chosen to the death. At least with Rocky Tommy was built up and Rocky was built downward to make the fight more even and I love that they tried something different with the street fight. I always though Daniel should had fought SIlver.
@@rxtsec1 Stallone did not "change his mind midway." They started shooting with the idea Rocky would die. Then, a week into shooting, the studio came in and said "Eh, no, Rocky's not gonna die." Stallone tried to fight them on it, but eventually, he lost out.
@@ConstantineFurman not true the director blamed Stallone more than he blamed the studio. I saw the interview. He said Stallone realized he agreed with the studio and didn't want to kill off Rocky. In addition Stallone always says Rocky 6(Rocky Balboa) is his favorite Rocky movie and he's glad he didn't kill him off & he wishes he didn't kill Apollo off either.
Stallone's dad passed in 2011 then lost Sage in 2012, I can't even imagine how that feels.
Sylvester Stallone lost his mom to in 2020 but she lived a long life when died at age 98. Stallone has dealt with rough times when was poor before becoming a star after Rocky and his son Seargeoh has Autism. Stallone had two failed marriages before marrying his third wife Jennifer.
Great video as always! Rocky & Adrian's son in the movie was portrayed by Stallone's real son, Sage. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago. More Stallone picks: NIGHTHAWKS (1981), RHINESTONE (1984) and as another poster stated, OVER THE TOP (1987). You won't be disappointed!
What not Demolition Man, Cobra, or Tango and Cash : I actually really like thos even Tango and Cash
the lockeroom was his body shutting down from the extreme trauma his brain took. Loved the bell sounds when he couldent stop his hands from shaking, it was as if rocky was on his death knell
Excellent reaction! I thought the analysis at the end was superb and showed exactly how I feel about Rocky V as a longtime fan of the series. The Mickey flashbacks and Talia Shire (Adrian's) performance were tremendous. You too also pointed out even more positives about this and interesting plot points that I hadn't really thought about before, like Paulie's awareness of Rocky's neglect of his son, and when Tommy had started to go down the wrong path. It showed a TON of character growth for Paulie, which was cool to see. The other thing you guys mentioned that I'd never realized before is that Duke was actively trying to make things personal/emotional so that he could get Rocky to fight. Rocky even said when they were outside Mickey's Gym that he 'aint personally or emotionally involved', and Duke caught on to that and forced that to be the case by the end. Super astute analysis there on you guys' part. Lastly, I think you too will absolutely LOVE Rocky Balboa, it is a great film in every sense.
The original ending was that Rocky was supposed to die because Stallone didn't want to do anymore Rocky movies, but the studio convinced him to change it. The next movie rounds out the Rocky story nicely and Creed definitely takes it to the next level.
Perfect summary.

Thanks so much for this Rocky V reaction! In my life, this was the very first Rocky movie I saw in the cinema. I saw it with my father and brother.
Looking at this movie, I really don’t see any flaws in it. It’s yet another perfect Rocky film
When that aggressive manager showed up I thought I knew why this was most people's least favorite part: we get another unbelievably ridiculous victory (not as if Rocky III and IV weren't entertaining but they had some unrealistic superhero vibe). But in the end I was really surprised (pleasantly) for being realistic and I really liked the emotional aspects as well. Actually this was my second favorite part after the first one.
I always enjoyed this movie. I think it follows a great story arc of a boxer who fights with all heart and very little defensive skill who gets and retains the world title; goes through a grueling international spectacle match where he suffers from intense CTE issues, and winds up latching on to the first boxer who shows some skill to try and live boxing through him. From the start Tommy showed warning signs and Rocky ignored them because he was feeling dopamine hits living through Tommy boxing for him. A lot of the things Rocky does in this movie I chalk up to his brain damage. When his son tells him the picture was of his French teacher but then a minute later Rocky says English teacher was a clue to me that his mind was going and his decision making was going to be compromised.
I agree with most of that, but he was joking that the kid probably had made more than just the one spicy picture. He didn't say show me your English teacher _again._
The irony in this is that Tommy Morrison, the actor who played Tommy Gunn, was a real-life boxer who had incredible potential, but who's life followed a very tragic path.

The character of The Duke is based on Don King, whom was a famous and over the top boxing promoter at the time.
I noticed that the same actors who played the bartender, the gym assistant and the pet shop owner/manager in the 1976 movie were back in Rocky V. It was all part of the effort to recapture the look and feel of the 1976 movie.

The movie isn't THAT bad as people think it is.
Comparing to most movies that have come out in the last 15-20 years, this is a masterpiece.
And it had to follow the other Rocky movies, so not an easy task to begin with.
You guys are gonna enjoy Rocky Balboa and both Creed movies alot when you get around to them.
I'm convinced that over 90% of the people with these overwhelmingly negative comments about Rocky V haven't actually seen the movie. They just read the plot synopsis and reacted negatively to that.
Whenever a new piece of media comes out, sometimes it gets butchered and people jump on it and stay loyal to the butchering forever. It's real psycho shit... Rocky V got butchered, so "it's open season" on it.

I personally love this film, but for none of the reasons I love the previous ones. It finally addresses what an absent father Rocky is (and always has been during the movies).
Paulie's redemption, although he wasn't a bad guy, he was just an everyday guy with resentment and jealousy.
I also think it expects the viewer to fill in some gaps instead of being spoon fed the plot (which I think could have been done a tad better).
Tommy Gunn is also a kid, he says at the beginning that he just turned 20 and boxes as an excuse to get away with his anger and violence, which is what Adrian meant when saying he didn't have Rocky's heart. He only wanted the fame and money, whereas you both agreed at the start that Rocky never cared about that.

This is literally the only movie where he is an "absent father" at all. And it wasn't even all that bad. Yeah, Rocky blew the kid off a few times, but it was because he was busy. Rocky was literally at work when the kid came in looking for attention.
The fact is that any "neglect" the kid thought he felt was in his own head. He's a kid. Everything perceived as negative is the end of the world to a kid.
But I don't like the way they laid all the blame for the money loss on Paulie, especially because it doesn't make any sense. Why would they give Paulie power of attorney over thier finances? That makes no sense. They should have just made the guy taking care of thier money responsible. Left Paulie out of it. That woukd make more sense cause that happens a lot.

@@russellward4624 there accountant was corrupt and took the money and thought he could put into stock market and when market dried up so did all of Rocky’s money leaving him penniless and broke forcing Rocky and Adrian to sell everything and move to low rent neighborhood in Philadelphia
In the retelling of anyone's life there are chapters that are not always the most entertaining and not always the most pleasant but are necessary to understand the whole story.
Rocky V is one of those chapters.
Did you notice that the guy playing Rocky's lawyer was also the same guy who played the Philadelphia boxing commission head in Rocky Balboa? The actor, by the way, is a real life lawyer!
I love how much smarter and more confident Rocky and Adrian became.

I think some people don't like this film because they love the Balboa Family. Rocky fought so hard and achieved so much it was heart breaking to see them through bankruptcy. And struggle because they were good people. But in Hine sight this had to happen. In the long run. The hero's journey must have some struggles of not just the physical but the emotional. I like that Pauly has had a lot of character growth. He did make lots of mistakes but eventually learned from them. Which is why he was warning Rocky about Tommy. Rocky took the hardest emotionally because him and Adrian love their child and wanted good things for him. People forget Rocky in the 1st film wanted to prove thT he wasn't just another but from the neighborhood. That's why he was so frustrated. I CRY every time I see the Micky flash back. I look forward to the watching the Rocky Balboa vid.
Saw this in the theater - and always appreciated how it seemed much more "realistic" after Rocky IV. How do you actually weather getting beaten by someone like Drago. And the path that many fighters wind up traveling, especially if they wind up screwing up their finances. And that 'flashback' to the gym with Mickey... one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. The "Get up you sonuva bitch - Mickey loves ya" part gets me in the feels every single time..... And Paulie winds up the MVP in this one lol (along with the priest from 1 and 2. And speaking of those movies, note that Tommy's first fight is in the dark, grimy ring we see Rocky first fight in Rocky 1)
Also, as far as I remember, Stallone planned on this being Rocky's final chapter so to me, it always made sense to bring him full circle and bring hm and Adrian back to the old neighborhood.
"Rocky Balboa" will knock your socks off!!!
Tommy Morrison, who plays Tommy Gunn, was a real life boxing world champion. He even defeated George Foreman in 1993 and later on defeated Razor Ruddock. In 1996 Morrison was diagnosed with HIV which resulted in him being banned from boxing. Sadly this led Tommy to a downward spiral. Morrison had a tragic life and dealt with legal troubles, drug addiction, and multiple arrests following his ban from boxing. He made a comeback in 2007 after his ban was removed due to multiple negative HIV tests. His comeback didn't last very long. Unfortunately in 2013, Tommy passed away due to multi-organ failure and cardiac arrest.
Pauly had a redemption arc in this movie even though he screwed up at the beginning big time ...but helping the kid train helping out getting the gym up and running was solid
I love that they course corrected and brought Rocky back to being more real. I love Rocky III and IV, but I consider those movies chapters of Rocky's life if they were told in a comic book. It was great to see real Rocky that I felt I hadn't really seen since Rocky II. But then this movie the story just didn't do justice to a real Rocky story. There's an aura of depression about this movie, in the movie itself and in the actual lives of those that made it, which I'm sure has already been remarked on more than a few times here in the comments.
Such a shame.
With all that being said, I still like this movie. I still find enjoyment in rewatching it. It's just my least favorite of the Rocky movies.

I get you, but this this just looks more real than 4 without really being it. The melodrama is still too over the top to rival 1 and 2. Also there is course correction and then there is making a U turn. The return to basics was so contrived and forced... But I am genuinely glad that you like it.
Believe it or not, Burt Young (Paulie) was actually a heck of a great boxer in real life. 32-2 as a Marine and 17-0 as a pro under Cus D'Amato (Same one who trained Mike Tyson).
I can believe that for sure 💪💪💪 maybe that's why Stallone want have him in the movie, so Burt could teach Stallone a little bit
@@jimmykarlsson2567 Made me realize in that parking garage scene in Rocky 3, Burt was being careful not to hurt Stallone, when as a kid I figured it was the other way around. Never seen it the same since my daughter showed me Burt's biography.

I wasn't sure if anyone else has commented on this but the actor Tommy Morrison who portrayed Tommy Gunn was not only a professional boxer but was also the great nephew of the late John Wayne (Marion Morrison)
I never thought V was as bad as people make out. I get that it’s a real tonal shift which might not appeal to everyone. The mickey flashback always makes me tear up. Burgess Meredith was a brilliant actor.
Also the actors playing Tommy died of HIV. Also that was Stallone’s real son in the film; he also died recently.

I think Rocky 5 has aged well, and Stallone had to bring the series back to earth after part 4. the scene with Micky brings on the tears everytime!

I think it gets a bad reputation because it was the 5th installment and it faced heavy competition from Home Alone.
The guy he trains was a real life boxer named Tommy Gunn (not the pornstar). The movie doesn't exaggerate how good he actually was. He wasn't in the follow up. He passed away nearly a decade ago.
Always loved Rocky V never saw the problems people have with and I say it at any opportunity I loved meet Tommy Morrison in person… great reaction as always.
Also this is my second favorite Adrian performance behind Rocky 3. The monologue in the street in this movie is almost as good as the Monologue in the beach in Rocky 3. Gives me chills every time. Talia Shire as Adrian is perfect.

After over the top action part 3 and 4 a lot of people thought this one was a let down, even if Rocky was not a boxing movie there was always a box match and I guess people expected it. I think this movie tries to go back to the roots of Rocky 1 and I think that it is a better movie than 3 and 4 even though they are more fun to watch. As a kid I always found Rocky 3 and 4 to be the best and the other ones to be "boring" but as I grew older I realised how wrong I was.

Gotta love how each movie picks up EXACTLY where the previous one left off, but somehow the kid's aged 3-5 years. Lol
I often wonder how much of the ending was changed once Rocky's death was changed. It seems rather comical "he took my room!" and would have been very out of place considering the planned finale of the movie. I would be interested in reading the original script.

@@RDSports5 Geez. That was decidedly more disturbing. Wish they had kept in the part where Rocky helps him up. The look Tommy gives him is a bit of a payoff to the "Why can't you see he's just using you?" theme being setup throughout the movie.
And no comic relief screaming "he took my room" throwing off the seriousness of the fight.
OK. Okay. o.k. Rocky 5 has some redeeming qualities that I rediscovered with Re-watching it with ya’ll. I think the reason myself (and a lot of the other commentators) didn’t like it too much was because of the last acts awkward vibe change and the dated/cheesy/New-Jack-swing score.
But, listen…
Rocky 5 sets up “Rocky Balboa” so perfectly; I’m looking forward to your reaction to it.

This was a great reaction and commentary for Rocky V.... you both did not leave out anything . I like how you opened up the whole franchise and brought up important situations going on around Rocky V . Now Rocky V might be for most the least favorite in the franchise but on a personal level for me.... Rocky 6 will always be my least favorite... I watched it once and I will not watch it again . I did go on to watch Rocky in Creed but I have not seen Creed 2.... I am not sure yet if I will .
All in all I still really did enjoy both your reactions and comments for this movie and I am likely to watch your video here again soon . You both really did bring up a lot here . I was emotionally invested growing up watching the Rocky franchise.... the sentimentality in this one with his son will always mean something important to me . Thank you both for this very much.
Yeah, I don't see the hype for Rocky Balboa that alot of people have, it was okay. I preferred this movie over Rocky Balboa. Still glad they're watching the whole series.
I think the biggest issue with Tommy gun was that Rocky attributed way more heart and character to him than he ever actually had. Like you said many times, Rocky always believes the best about everyone. He was simply there to use Rocky and then move on from the very beginning. That's the thing that Pauly saw. The only thing Tommy had was strength. He never had the endurance and heart that Rocky had. Duke fully understood that Tommy was not smart and was greedy. That was all he needed in order to manipulate him into creating this mess.
I grew up in the Kansas City area and Tommy Morrison was the local prodigy. It was great to watch him rise up in the ranks and beat a lot of legitimate and well-known heavyweights. His highlight reel is amazing. Though as fantastic as his boxing career was his personal life and career would end in heartbreaking tragedy. Great reaction as always!
The next one (Rocky Balboa) is soo good. It’s emotional, and has one of the best life speeches in it (sunshine and rainbows).

The director John G. Avildsen did the original Rocky and Karate Kid…..fast forward some years and he also did Karate Kid 3 and Rocky V back to back…..something happened there in 1989 and 1990 that made him go silly with the direction of those two films
The Duke was basically another DON KING and Tommy was like a prime MIKE TYSON.
That was both a great video and a really nice movie review from you both. I also greatly enjoyed watching the cornucopia of Philadelphia sports news reporters in the press conference scene.
I’ll mention that online (Daily Motion I think) there’s a workprint version of Rocky V. It’s not in the best quality but there you’ll find more scenes, different soundtrack, alternate takes and more character development and is actually a much better cut of the movie.
Stallone had mentioned recently after finishing Rocky IV directors cut that he’s like to make a ‘Stallone cut’ of Rocky V. Maybe then we will have a more fleshed out and official definitive cut of Rocky V. (Stallone acknowledges that it’s the worst received Rocky in the franchise and also admits it’s his least favorite in the series)

Rocky physically went back to where he started. You also got to see leg breaker/Street fighter Rocky In the fight with Tommy. Tommy's first fight is where we first saw Rocky fight in the opening scene of Rocky ( making $20.) Tommy Morrison Played Tommy He was a professional boxer at the time . This movie was a necessary step for the transition to the Balboa movie as well as Creed.

I've always enjoyed Rocky V. I recognize that the filmmaking isn't on the same level as most of the other films, but it's still 100% canon, and I think that a good bit of it is better than some of the other sequels.

Tommy Gunn is an actual fighter by the name of Tommy Morrison who had an amazing record of 52 fights 48 wins with 42 by knock out.

The original script by Stallone. Tommy kills Rocky in the street fight. Stallone had second thoughts after speaking to the studio who wanted more Rocky movies after this. The original end credits was supposed to show Rocky's life ending on his grave but Studio convinced Stallone not to end on a downer.
Sage Stallone was originally set to reprise his role in Rocky Balbao but had sort of fallen off the wagon by the time came around to filming. He unfortunately died of a drug overdose in 2012.
Tommy "The Machine" Gun protrayed by Tommy Morrison was a real boxer. He was WBO world champion in 1993. He was hand selected to play Tommy Gunn by Stallone. Interesting fact his reallife nickname was The Duke. He died in 2013 of a cardic arrest.
Rocky V is brilliant in my eyes. Gets too much stick. The end fight is justified as no medical team would clear Rocky for the injury he had at the time. All other 4 movies had a boxing finish and would have felt a bit meh for a 5th straight time, plus it was never about Boxing it's about Rocky and is inward struggle through life. Personally speaking they are all great but If I had to select a poorest Rocky Film. It would be Rocky 3.

The ancient Greeks actually had a word for that kind of resilience, but I can't remember it right now. Boxer Eurydamas of Cyrene gained legendary status in the ancient Greek Olympics when he won despite being hit so hard that it broke several of his teeth. He didn't want to spit the broken teeth out because that would let his opponent know how badly he was hurt, and he didn't want to keep them in his mouth because he might choke of them, so swallowed them and kept fighting until he knocked out his opponent.
Luckily Rocky 6 is much better.
The Duke character was an obvious reference to long time fight promoter Don King. I also like the Rocky Marciona references. Marciano is the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated. He was well known for a fighting style where he took a lot of punches. Which of course, meant he retired pretty young and sadly, died young too. Anyway, Marciano is who Stallone based Rocky on. The bad actor who played Tommy Gunn was not really an actor, but a profesional boxer named Tommy Morrison. Who also died young, from the aids virus.

The whole brain damage story plot was pretty much lessened for Rocky Balboa thankfully. Stallone said that with advancements in science and medical treatment that the damage Rocky suffered really wasn't that severe.
Best scene in this movie was the flashback Rocky had with Mickey in the gym. That was just beautifully written and acted.

Almost forgot you did these today. This in my opinion is the most underrated of the bunch. It´s not unenjoyable. It has a lot of depth. But also some flaws.
And it´s still my least favorite of the franchise, unfortunately.....
And I gotta add that the German dub for this is absolutely GREAT. From the moment on that Rocky said, that he can´t stop his hands from shaking (you just GOTTA check out the German dub for this one!), I knew, I was in for something special........
Tommy Gunn was portrayed by Tommy Morrison, nephew of the legendary John Wayne. Sadly, he passed away as well.
No matter what some have said...I loved this movie and all of the Rocky movies.
