    You missed Rolf Potts.

Those conversations were influential to me. At the pinnacle of youthful wonder in my 20’s I took a different job that put me on international assignments, and I made it count. I blew off my boss for the jungles of Malaysia. I saw the sunrise while it was setting on the only place my parents know. I stood at the ticket counter and picked a random country. I made friends with people who don’t speak my language and chased the incredible zeal of a traveler's romantic fling. In the glorious prime of my life, I got to chase adventure like a tiger chases prey.

That path I took in life, and others, happened in part because of the ideas and conversations I heard during the formative years of my youth, which in my case, happened to coincide with the raw, novel, and outlaw times of early podcasting.

Beyond exposure to new ideas, really what happens is you start to internalize the underlying virtues of people you model after, and you model after the people you’re around and are compelled to listen to. Ari was part of that crew. I happen to know the exact first occasion - January 2010 on the third episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, before this show existed. I'm not sure how many people have actually taken the full ride of the show, live as it happened, but there can't be many.

It's hard to say exactly how and by what you got influenced by, but I’ll take some guesses.

Ari’s sense of “going for it” probably rubbed off. Not in a reckless way, but a calculated, bold action sort of way. Deciding to have a flip phone, disappearing to travel, leaving his religion, putting comedy specials on CZcams for free, committing to reputationally damaging jokes because of beliefs about the art form, not giving fake apologies, ending this podcast when it’s right - demonstrations of independent thought like these are formative to young people as they look to others to model behavior after.

There’s virtue in “going for it” - some combination of boldness, bravery, intelligence and confidence. And, in a way, nobody goes for it quite like the amazing racist.

Probably don’t dose people with drugs, but you get what I’m saying.

There was also that time I, no shit, thought I had herpes for 2 years, stayed celibate and didn’t get tested to avoid confirming/confronting my failure. Joe List helped me a little through that period. And then I found out I actually don’t have herpes and I praise the lord every day I’m not one of those dirty people.

Let’s see, I also lost my religion. This would have happened anyway, but likely in a slower, more troublesome way. I distinctly remember hearing those early, early podcast voices make some religious comments and thinking I've never heard a non-believer talk.

And, f***, I’ll miss the music. You know he thought about that selection. And the format is the best. A 30 second teaser with just enough context to make you think when the song's groovin’. Why this song? It doesn’t have to make sense, but often is does. Just go along and let it frame the mood. Ari's definitely the most prolific music lover in my sphere.

With the money and views in podcasting now, it feels high stakes and tense. People are thinking about how they will be heard as they talk, and that's a shame because there's real beauty when you can just hear a person as they are. I think that's one reason for Ari's sustained success in podcasting. He clearly gives fewer classical f***'s than the average, so that thought baggage is out of the way, but he also helps get it out of the way for his guests too by making it a hang at the park, or asking questions like an actual person, not a person asking questions for an audience.

One thing that occurred to me along the way is the power of low-stakes audio-only conversation, generally. When you hear someone talk as themselves, that IS their consciousness, and I don't think there's a better way to capture it. Imagine actually closing your eyes and listening to someone's words. Your visual ADHD gets re-directed into thought space, and you can hone in on the stream of consciousness coming at you, human brain waves transduced, the human experience. And then Brent Crysler interrupts with the sound of the absence of brain cells, whatever that is.

If low-stakes audio-only conversation is the best way to capture a consciousness, why aren't there home audio's like there were home videos? It would be cool as f*** to hear my ancestors talk as they were, in long form. So that's what I started to do - a home audio series with my family and friends. Imagine instead of saying a name on a gravestone to flash people back into existence, you can click play and hear them as they were, in their prime, and maybe they still have relevant things to say. I'm directly stealing Ari's format with leading and trailing songs.

Another thing that rubbed off might be Ari's sense of value for freedom. I've often found myself thinking "what are the consequences, really?", a common thought pattern for Ari that is somehow difficult for most people.

Back to the music. I put together a playlist as my muse for this moment of retrospection. A couple songs are direct plugs from the show. Others only have threads of podcast influence. Upper Echelon, for example, caught my attention as a party anthem, I think, because I was made aware of the party horn sound drop through the podcast right as it was making its way into culture. Another is Upward Over The Mountain, which is the outro song for Duncan Trussell's beautiful conversation with his dying mother, a piece of work that helped me with my own maternal mortality. Others are just jams that somehow fit the moment, often tilting towards some unashamed core in me that is a product of the American South. And some I've just long thought deserve a spot in a podcast intro/outro. I'll reply to this comment with the link.
To paint my parallel journey with this show, I started as a high school slacker graduating into the absolute community college mediocrity path, and I’m now a scientist at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, with a hot, perfect-match professor wife who I met while chasing that Rolf Potts inspired adventure. F***, look what happens when you go for it sometimes. I genuinely think that my access to early podcasting before any of my peers caught on let me speak beyond my years, and that advantaged me in life.

Last thing - these concluding episodes have beautifully colored a picture of posterity and legacy through a man's description of his proudest work. Things that will outlive him. Things that he knows will be the high water mark in this life, at least in one dimension of it. And what great timing, as I myself now enter the portion of life where a man does his life's work. This little tip in the direction of legacy and posterity has spurred self-reflection, and that, again, is the butterfly flaps of influence.

He's provided all that influence while shooting the shit, cracking jokes, and talking to prostitutes. And that’s how you paint beauty while staying funny, you f***ing idiot Edinburgh fake emoter blowhards.

Anyway, Ari, cheers to a new arc in life. I got you a beer if you visit the Pacific Northwest. Thanks a lot.

    Kyle

People bang the drum about how great O&A was, but I was always a Ron and Fez man. Obviously I listened to O&A, but it was always about what guest they had on. Vos, or Quinn, Patrice, etc. It didn't matter with Ron and Fez, they could make great radio between the two of them, because they understood that they were painting a picture for the listener, not being dicks for the sake of it. The fact that after 20+ years, people were still saying "No sh*t" when Fez came out, says it all. Of course he was gay, that was the joke.

(by the way, someone should do a show or documentary about Brian Redban's impact on podcasting and comedy, he got A LOT of people started.) Also, I really appreciated the musical selections in the pods, some selections were just genius. Thank you for the last decade of entertainment ari. This is my favourite podcast of all time and it’s gotten me through various tough times in my life. It and you will be sadly missed. I truly hope “you be trippin” will still happen. Gonna miss this podcast so much. I really loved you finding interesting people to interview. You really shaped me as a younger man now i’m in my mid twenties after a decade of listening and you’ve truly shaped me as a person. Thankyou again Ari. Enjoy your summer ❤️
