The story behind this performance is Scott had lost his voice just before and they had a terrible dress rehearsal. They’d resigned themselves to no better than second place. You can hear the break in his voice at the end of that last note. Scott once said it was their plea to be in the finale and you can see it. They left everything on the stage. It’s also considered in the fandom to be the first official Mitch-slap. It was the first time they just unleashed Mitch without reservation and he killed it (it’s widely believed the producers wanted a designated lead and Scott was the obvious choice at the time. It’s also believed Scott and Mitch were asked to downplay their sexuality, which is likely a reason Mitch sang in his lower register for much of the show). My favorite part is their slow walk to the front of the stage at the beginning. They sang “the horses are coming, so you better run!” To me, they were telling us “we’re here and we’re not going down without a fight!” Chills every time.

YES! Avi was doing that overtone WHILE singing the bass 🤯. I don’t think the judges ever understood / commented on it. Scott was a powerhouse and MITCH!! @@margretrosenberg420 I don't think the judges missed it. I can't believe anything happened on that stage that Ben Folds, especially, was not fully aware of. My belief is that any specific comments they may have made regarding overtones got edited out by the producers, much as they excluded any references to LGBT youth in their coverage of the Trevor Project. It seems far more likely to me that they decided the Sing-Off audience would be confused or worse, bored, by the advanced concept of overtones, and so any of those comments ended up on the cutting room floor. Mustn't expect too much of the average listener, y'know!

I love how this performance foreshadows the arrangement of their greatest hit, Hallelujah. The way everyone recedes to showcase Mitch's sensational voice is striking, and an ingenious formula too effective not to use again. They certainly brought it all together in Hallelujah, one of their last official videos with Avi, and a perfect circular moment in PTX history.

You're right to notice the sound that Avi is making - it's his overtone singing where he sings a bass note but carries this second tone on top of it! It shows up in a couple other of their later songs but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head. Wasn't this just the best? Mitch killing it, Scott being all growly and intense - it's my fave of the season followed closely by Let's Get It On. There's another comment about their performance in season 4 and that's definitely worth watching. Plus in the intro it shows them meeting and chatting with that year's competitors, one of which is Home Free. :)

This was the last judged performance. As with most of these singing competitions, the finale episode has a bunch of special performances by the finalists, some eliminated groups and special guest singers. Each of the finalists gets special comments by the judges, a video review of their performances and each of the three groups does a song with one of the judges. For some reason, Shawn did not perform; instead, Pentatonix does a song with host Nick Lachey, "Just Give Me One Night (Una Noche)", which was a hit for Lachey's boy band, 98 Degrees. Some people don't like Nick, but I highly recommend you watch Una Noche because it is a big moment for Kirstie, and I think Nick's reaction to her is hilarious. 🤣

Ok, what's left is the finale (which was not voted on, votes were already closed) where they did
-Without you (with feedback issues so they were off)
    -Una Noche (With Nick Lachey)
-Announcement of the winner + a part of Eye of the tiger
Then there was a christmas episode. I think ptx did a justin beiber song, a song with the 2 past winners AND a song with another group and Flo-Rida.
I don't remember which episode but one of those 2 last also have "group numbers" with all the girls and all the boys from the show. Also, each episode the season had an opening number where Scott had a big part (and the rest of them gott bigger parts as time went on) which I find very fun.
From other seasons you have ptx coming back for season 4 (that homefree won) and did I need your love and for season 5 a Holiday Medley.

Wonderful reaction! Yes, that was Avi doing a bass note AND the whirring sound at the same time! It's almost like they have 6 singers when he does that. And finally, everyone got to hear how incredible Mitch's voice is.
I do hope you watch the next two performances - Una Noche, sung with Nick Lachey, and Without You. A few people didn't like Without You, but it is one of my favorite performances of the whole season. It is a love song and they turn and look at each other as they sing. Yes, they were exhausted and some of the mics weren't working quite right. But it also has some of the best harmonies of the whole show.
After that, there is the video which shows them hearing that they won, and they try to sing a closing number, Eye of the Tiger, but they are so emotional, and it is pretty shaky. They came back as guest performers the following season (which is the one Home Free won), and did two songs - First was a Christmas Medley and the second was "I Need Your Love", both of which are definitely worth checking out. It was nice seeing them come back, not afraid of losing and well-rested, and both performances are great.

    • @bill.godwin-austen
      @bill.godwin-austen Před rokem +2

They themselves weren't happy with how "Without You" came out on the show (it was because of a muck-up with the mic balance and what they were getting (or not getting) in their in-ear monitors). There's a video they shot in a parking garage (probably at the hotel they were staying at for the show) where they did it the way they intended for it to sound, and it's amazing! Could you imaging driving into that structure to park your car before going to your room and coming across these five singing their incredible harmonies?

The fact that they pulled out such an incredible performance in spite of the sound difficulties, in spite of their exhaustion, was amazing. Please, watch that performance again, see how they are singing to each other, listen to the split harmony on the last chorus - it's incredible.

The original is a great song! They did it justice. You can see the rush of energy they got when Mitch's big solo was so warmly received - they strode down stage like the bosses they are after that. Seeing Mitch's triumph here takes me to his recent performance of Creep after the unmasking - he was *beaming* with joy as he went higher and higher, slaying the crowd in the studio and across the world, who expected a female vocalist for that part after hearing them do it as the California Rolls. @@CarmenReacts - The whole thing is very fake in a way. The idea is to drive the viewers into a frenzy episode by episode. Pentatonix came in 3rd, which we all know would be outrageous if the show really was about vocal talent, but it's not. They were dressed as a 5-piece California makizushi (sushi roll), which goes with them because they work out of Los Angeles. Every competitor starts out dressed in an elaborate costume, real Latin American carnival style, and they perform round by round until "voted out." Scott seems to have written all the arrangements for Pentatonix as California Roll.
The big climax was their cover of Radiohead's "Creep" (another little connection: Brian Justin Crum, who performed with Superfruit in "Rise" after the Pulse nightclub shooting, had a famous performance of this same song several years ago). When an act is voted out, they get "unmasked" onstage. The show usually gives the outed act a few bars over the closing credits for the episode, but with Pentatonix, they got to sing the whole song.
Scott has talked about how difficult it was for them to sing with seeing each others' faces, body language, and reactions, so maybe that's why that final performance was so elevated, now that they could see each other and show the audience what they're really like. (Well, except for the goofy glittery leggings and matching T shirts they had to wear under the masks ... they also had skin-tight streaked white sleeves+gloves over their hands and arms, so that you wouldn't realize that the group had two black members and three white members. And Kirstin and Mitch both wore chunky heels throughout the show, so you couldn't be sure how many women vs. men.)

The fact that ptx used CZcams (with visuals) and social media is likely the reason they became as big as they are, and they did it long before the big labels caught on that it was a good marketing stratergy. What I think you don't already know is the reason Scott, Avi, and Kevin were getting the lion's share of the attention.
I assume you're aware that Scott and Mitch are both gay, and they both came out of the closet in high school. Well, the producers of _The Sing-Off_ were also aware that they're gay, and they did NOT want this fact coming out on their nice, "family friendly" show. So they took steps to keep this little fact under wraps. I won't go into all the things they did, since only one of them is relevant to where the attention was going.
The producers were afraid that if Mitch's upper range became obvious that would raise questions about his sexual orientation. It's a pretty stupid idea - after all, Scott is gay, too, and he's a baritone - but apparently bigotry results in stupidity, or vice versa. So the producers went out of their way to squelch Mitch. During the third season of _The Sing-Off,_ and ONLY the third season, the show had a rule that each band must select one singer at the beginning of the season who was their designated lead singer, and that person must be their lead singer in every performance. And then the producers informed Pentatonix that PTX didn't get to choose; their lead singer had to be Scott.
From a competition standpoint, this rule was a problem for all of the groups. Pentatonix was the smallest band on the show, which put them at a disadvantage; if one of their members was sick no one else could fill in, they needed all five of them to be at the top of their form EVERY PERFORMANCE. In the bigger groups, one person having an off day was no big deal; someone else could always fill in, which gave the bigger groups an advantage. But with the single lead singer rule the larger groups lost some of that advantage; there was one person, their lead singer, who could NOT get sick; the only difference was that Pentatonix had five singers who couldn't afford to get sick.
But Pentatonix also gained a slight advantage from this rule, because Pentatonix knew where it came from and whom it was aimed at, so unlike the other bands they pushed back. Remember that Britney Spears medley they did? Their lead singer in that medley HAD to be Kirstie; anyone else would have made it seem too gay. 😂 And in their 11th performance (which was the same night as this 12th performance), they had two leads, Scott and Kirstie. Also, as the judges noticed the phenomenal talent of Avi and Kevin Pentatonix deliberately began having their rhythm section do more, once again, to take away from the perception that only Scott could be the lead.
Also, notice that each time Pentatonix -broke- bent this rule, they were praised for their decision to do so by the judges. More, the judges DIDN'T say, "You know that technically you're breaking a rule here, but it was still a good decision," because apparently the judges were totally unaware of the single lead singer rule; the producers hadn't told them. So while the other bands slavishly followed the rule, Pentatonix pushed back against the rule as much as they dared, and gained standing with the judges because of it.
Which brings us to the twelfth performance. One of the reasons the judges selected "The Dog Days Are Over" for Pentatonix was that it was a chance for Scott to shine, with his powerful baritone. What the judges were unaware of was that Scott's powerful baritone had been so overworked by the one lead singer rule that Scott's voice was suffering. He really needed a week off for his voice to recover, and that wasn't an option. Worse, Scott was coming down with a cold. And he still had to be the lead singer in "The Dog Days Are Over."
They had a great arrangement. They were using Avi and Kevin as much as possible, but Scott still needed to sing lead, and it just wasn't working. Their dress rehearsal was an out-of-tune disaster. They just KNEW they were going to come out on the stage and totally blow it. After the twelfth performance the viewers could vote, and the last thing they did before voting opened was going to be mangling "Dog Days Are Over." They were going to go home in second place.
Okay, so was there anything they could salvage from the wreckage? Hmmm. It turns out that yes, there was one goal that they could still manage. They'd always had two goals for _The Sing-Off:_ they wanted to win that recording contract, and they wanted to introduce the world to the wonder that is Mitch Grassi's voice (though I suspect that wasn't Mitch's goal, but he was overruled). Up until now the producers had managed to keep them from attaining that second goal, but the time had come to insist upon it. After all, what was the worst that could happen? They were going to lose out on first place anyway; once Mitch got his moment the cat would be out of the bag and there would be nothing the producers could do about it.
So they arranged a solo for Mitch. It took only a minor tweak to their choreography to get Mitch to the right place at the right time, so they tweaked. And then they went out there, and in order to give Mitch the most support they could they did their best; they gave it their all. In Scott's case, that means that he actually gave his voice for this performance; that vocal fry on his last note was his voice giving out entirely. And to their astonishment, their all was not only good enough, it was fantastic. They totally nailed it. With this performance they won _The Sing-Off._

People have told me about this before, the fact they were not allowed to be openly gay and that they were pushing for Scott as the lead and both of those things still shock me every time I read it in a comment. Even though I have definitely seen it happen more and more as I watched the performances. The fact that they used this performance to show off Mitch’s incredible talent makes it so special and I’m glad to see he was finally able to do that 🫶🏻

@@CarmenReacts I'm 70 years old. When I was a kid, in a parochial school, no one even mentioned homosexuality around me.
My high school didn't have a prom (because close dancing might lead to making out which might lead to other things); instead we had a Junior/Senior banquet. And I didn't have a date for the banquet, because no one wanted to date a girl who was a math geek. Fortunately for me, my physics lab partner also didn't have a date, because there was no one he was interested in (or so I understood it at the time), so he asked me to the banquet. Protective coloration, for both of us; there was never any suggestion that we were anything but friends.
And the day after we graduated he came out of the closet. He moved to San Francisco, where there was a large gay community, and we fell out of touch. I found out later that he was still in S.F. in the early 1980s, when AIDS hit. He was likely infected before anyone even realized there was a strange new disease going around. Back then, HIV infection was a death sentence; obviously, he didn't make it.
I've lost three gay friends to AIDS, and one to suicide. I've seen gay friends find the loves of their lives and do everything short of getting married (because marriage wasn't a legal option), KNOWING that their beloved had AIDS and was dying. But they went ahead anyway, because that's what people do when they're in love.
And I've heard all the rhetoric from politicians claiming that if we allow gays to marry it will somehow amount to an attack on heterosexual marriage; and it's all BS. There's a strong human tendency to fear the "other," and politicians learned long ago how to use that to find a group that they can demonize and then use to their own advantage. Gays have been and continue to be one of the biggest targets, and lately it's begun spreading to trans people, as they've been more in the news. And yes, it is shocking to anyone who's capable of thinking about it objectively, but too many people still allow their knee-jerk responses to take over.
When you get to the finale you'll see Pentatonix visiting the Trevor Project to make some public service videos for Trevor Project and to talk with the kids about bullying. Before you watch that, I recommend looking up the Trevor Project online and finding out what they're all about. The producers of _The Sing-Off_ deliberately edited out any mention that the Trevor Project is all about supporting LGBTQ+ kids, to reduce their suicide rate, and in removing that information from the video they shot themselves in the foot, because too many people know about the Trevor Project, and they took offense at the blatant bigotry that had finally become obvious to the world.
