I really like his reserved attitude when someone tells him how great he is. He really doesn't want to be a role model and that's exactly the right attitude because you can never become a great director by just looking up to others. You need to look inside yourself just as he said ...
I realize Nolan hasn't yet had even close to the impact of any of these men. However, he does suspense and characters better than Hitchcock did. He does mind-bending photography better than Kubrick did. He uses sets and set pieces better than Welles did. Honestly, if he keeps up like this for the rest of his career, he may go down as the greatest director of all time.
Chris is such a straight faced character. You hardly see him smile or even express any other facial emotion. Could he be a highly advanced android.....?
I'm glad that Chris says "the story comes first" when they're asking him about 3D. The graphics in his films are fantastic. He doesn't need to shoot something in 3D to prove himself. Look at Avatar. It was a beautiful film, but the storyline and the dialogue were cheap. I like that the story itself is the number one priority for Nolan. That's what makes his work so much better.
And 0 oscars... I honestly think Chris does not give two fucks about Oscars, he knows he's better than everyone, the numbers speak for themselves. His first feature film, Following, had a budget of $6,000 USD and made a whopping $240,000 USD. Think about that
i really like the casting of tom berenger... kinda similar choice of casting eric roberts in TDK or rutger hauer in BB. and they are really great in those movies..
@shananika exactly ... and nolan also can rely on his stories because they are unique and extraordinary every single time ... one of my favorite writers/directors ... cant wait for "inception" ...
Inception has received wide critical acclaim and numerous critics have praised its originality, cast, score, and visual effects.[13] It won Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Cinematography, and was also nominated for four more: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Art Direction.
The best thing about this movie is when Leo spins his totem and it doesn't fall over which means the whole movie is just a dream. This happens at the very end of the movie. This was the best plot twist ever! I didn't see it coming. I love this movie :)
@cinemats digital cinema storage depends on delivery method - DCP (or digital cinema playlist) is MXF wrapped where DCDM (digital cinema distribution master) is large format image sequence , so yes massive amounts of storage would be required for even 10 or more 2K Res movies - So a 4K or even 6K 2 hour film would be huge - bear in mind IMAX is delivered as larger image as well Hence the reason most cinemas use DCP over DCDM. Hope that helps :)
@christm5 Stuff shot on IMAX looks great in IMAX theaters, and 35MM theaters. It's easy to scale down. Its when you shoot 35mm and upscale it to IMAX that stuff starts to fall apart. It looks like Nolan might be shooting batman 3 all IMAX. That would be awesome.
@cinemats IMAX is still 24FPS. IMAX is significantly higher resolution than film. It's also 4:3, a different aspect ratio (width vs height) than film. The problem comes when mixing the two. I still think if you want to shoot an IMAX film, shoot an IMAX film. If you want to shoot a 35mm film, shoot a 35mm film. Don't shoot both - your constantly mixing back and forth, and the effect can be jarring. The Dark Knight suffered from this, but he did use it wisely - city wide shots and action scenes.
i always find it funny that at these panels you can mention pretty much anything and someone will cheer for it.. i am not dissing it, i would too.. but sometimes it just cracks me up.. for example in this panel nolan mentions the different formats he shot inception on.. and you can hear basically 2 people clap when he said "65 mm Vistavision" :D :D
@cinemats You can convert film to IMAX. But just like taking a small jpg on the internet and enlarging it, your "blowing up" film to the size of IMAX - you're gonna loose some quality. That's why I don't like that route. So for most of the dark knight IMAX edition, your seeing blown up 35mm film.
Was that SEANxLONG @11:14? Also, it's great to hear that Blade Runner has served as an inspiration to his work. I personally find it to be my most influential film, especially when taking sci-fi into mind. Both Inception and BR had very similar endings in a way...
@Orbster25 Well if you're just the general public you don't notice it. But to a film enthusiast that sees 35mm, 2K Digital, 4K Digital and IMAX projections all the time you notice these things. Best example of this is The Dark Knight Blu-ray which still has all the IMAX DMR processing applied to it and you can see the nasty halo's around objects.
BTW, when I said 'my most influential film' I did not mean it as if I had anything to do with it. What I mean is that Blade Runner is the most influential sci-fi film to me. (Haven't seen 2001 yet, perhaps I should pick it up and watch it before making such a bold statement. I'll always love Blade Runner, though.)
@nathant I agree I don't like like the method IMAX blows it up. Not only do they take a "low resolution" 2K image most of the time and blow it up, they also scrub away the grain and apply nasty artificial sharpening which makes the 35mm material look way worse then it really is. Ideally I wish IMAX could get a 4K digital intermediate and just blow it up without applying ANY filters to the image so you have as much detail as possible and not have it scrubbed away with the grain removal.
@nathant There's also the problem in that 35mm film only has a resolution of about 2.5k before you start to see grain clumping and noise. So, really IMAX films should be shot on 65mm if you want a good quality blow-up
@matureguy65 Did you rip your review off of Ebert? Cause he said the exact same thing in his review. I agree with the opinion by the way, just wasn't mine originally.
As much as i hate boasting, Im in love with film making and In the future I'm pretty confident I will be successful.... But FUCK!..... Nolan... I'm so fn envious of your glorious work man, seriously... I got have a beer with him sometime...
Nolan has done some grest work. But I'd like to see him make a British film as all his others are very American orientated, I would like to see him have a go at Bond.
I find it ironic Nolan made one of the best reality-questioning movies thus far ever made (imo), yet seems like an immensely self-assured guy. Up to the point that I find his self-assurance quite disarming. Either that, or he's very arrogant, but somehow I just don't think that.
@HarknessRed Ok, so I have to agree the wooping is pretty annoying. But Nolan and Thomas don't appear too embarrassed or even irritated by it. They probably realize their at Wondercon, an annual movie geekfest and not some super prestigious film critics convention.
@Redspy27 He doesn't seem like the type of guy who makes movies because he wants to get a ton of money or wants to please people. When you hear him talk about how he makes his films, he makes it sound like he is making this for himself, and who cares if somebody thinks it's bad? He made the film the way he wanted too, and he is proud of it. Screw everybody else's opinions
@jalusbrian depends what you enjoy in a movie. I believe Chris Nolan is a humanist person while Jim Cameron goes for more a environmentalist, not saying that they dont care for one of the other. I did not care for Avatar its story was saying nature comes before man. What I always viewed is what is nature with out man. It kind of relates if a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around does it make a sound. I think the majority of people do not care for the plot of avatar since they dont connect
@jalusbrian no u got it wrong 3/4 of the profit for the movie is due to special effects. I can guarantee you that every 7-8/10 of people questioned randomly about avatar would say mediocre. There is no outstanding performance to escalate the plot any further. Nobody was nominated for any acting role. And I was hoping that Colonel Miles would have won at the end, They tried hard to make me see humans as evil they failed. There are plenty of people ready to believe in good, says so in TDK
Chris Nolan never went to film school. Not going to film school doesn't mean a damn thing. You can learn everything you have to about filmmaking in 10 minutes.
@shananika Why is it not possible to talk about Inception without mentioning Avatar? Anyway, although I love Avatar, Inception looks like it's own beast, and I so can't wait to see this... Wake me up when it's July.
@batman93oo right...so 1/4 of profit due to special effects and 3/4 due to story...thats sounds fair.....put the two together and you have a masterpiece..... NOW, how far would 2001 have gotten had it not been for its special effects? HMM?
I love how Nolan's films can be considered as a family collaboration.
I really like his reserved attitude when someone tells him how great he is. He really doesn't want to be a role model and that's exactly the right attitude because you can never become a great director by just looking up to others. You need to look inside yourself just as he said ...
I still so blown away by Inception... Chris Nolan is genius!!!!
You should rename the title:
"God captured on camera"
I realize Nolan hasn't yet had even close to the impact of any of these men. However, he does suspense and characters better than Hitchcock did. He’s getting there :)
Christopher Nolan trying his best not to smile at 4:07!!
What are you talking about?
he's already my favorite, I'm looking forward to this movie
I want your reviews 😂
god damn, this man is BRILLIANT
8:03 look at how he is nervous of the compliment!!! Very humble and truly genius! God bless him!
Yeah, he's very humble and egoless. Great director!
I love Nolan, such a master. Memento, The Prestige, Inception, The Dark Knight... Just can't wait for the next one.
so did you see The Dark Knight Rises?
Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet

Chris Chris Nolan Nolan! :D
Amazing brilliant Best Director!!!!
if it isn't so difficult, why aren't other directors making films like 'inception' that wasn't supposed to even have an audience?
OMG! I'm Glad you have this on Video I Ask the Question at 11:14 It was So AMAZING He Came There!
Who brings a baby to a interview like this? Honestly.
Definitely my most anticipated movie of this year.

no, he's not Mark Zuckerberg

nolan should have won the original screenplay award for memento
Same here, the footage they showed us looks incredible! :)
I give Nolan so much respect for not being a slave to CGI and 3D
YEAHHHH !!! GO Nolan !! I can't wait for Inception to come out
Emma Thomas looks great.
Inception was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four?

@cinemats It depends on the codec it is stored in. Some are huge and preserve the most quality, others are smaller and degrade it slightly.
i loved the part where she says @hitrecordjoe was "just brilliant" =) gave me goosebumps!
holy crap, i had no idea they were at wondercon this year. i would've gone to the panel if i knew. oh well.
