Grateful Dead - Box Of Rain (Philadelphia, PA 7/7/89)

- "Box Of Rain's return to the live repertoire in 1986 after a 13 year absence was one of the most welcome re-births of a Dead song. Since its March 20, 1986 return in Hampton, VA, Box Of Rain was a song that could appear anywhere in the show, sometimes opening the second set (as it does here), sometimes an encore, occasionally ending a first set, random middle of the first set placement, and even an occasional show-opener. Box Of Rain would be the last song the Grateful Dead ever played." - David Lemieux

This is a poor version of this fine song
Isn't there a term for Dead songs with long period of time between playing them? I can't remember. Thanks.
memorable. one of my very favorite songs
A long long time to be gone and a short time to be there?
@@horseyhorselips3501it sure is
I wish America was still like this .
it never was. this was always counterculture stuff
People were less selfish.
@@oliverfine1943
people were less selfish in the 1980s? I see you are too young to remember the abundance of yuppie culture.
@@tripsaplenty1227I thought I found it for a little while, until prescription amphetamine’s brought out the darkness in the hearts of many people I loved. It was good until it wasn’t.
make America Grateful again
Life passes in the blink of an eye. Every momemt is a treasure.
No question about it
That point at about 3:16 when Bob and Jerry join in….. Priceless!
Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there
The sad truth about life
Phil Lesh: "It's not a question of letting me sing but making me sing". Audience to band: "Make Phil Sing!!!" LOL.
We want Phil!!!!
Ain’t that the truth!!! LMAO. Sing it brother. Love this song.
Phil was on fire the whole show, especially Scarlet>Fire. Very nice version of Box of Rain
My first show. Unquestionably the single most impactful musical event in my life. Nearly 30 years ago now!
My first Dead show (a few years after this) was probably the single most impactful musical event in MY life as well. I'm not a jamband dude per se but nothing changed my life more than experiencing the Dead at MSG from the skybox directly across the stage. I barely knew their songs and a friend's mom had a pair and said friend's gf backed out at the last minute, paving the way for a love affair with the GD and the magic/camaraderie that followed them wherever they went. I find myself here today after a songwriters' circle I host weekly on Zoom and one of my talented colleagues told me that I 'can't' end a song on (sorry for musical jargon if you're not familiar) a suspended chord, and coincidentally I had on a GD shirt and my response was, "the band on my shirt ends one of their most precious songs on one!" HAHA apologies for the novel, I'm getting misty eyed just typing this... I am so fortunate to have seen Jerry about 20 times as a teenager.
Nice. Funny how that happens.
The last song they would perform together ❤
What is this in Philadelphia with Bob Dylan opening at JFK? Because it was my first show as well. If that’s the same show it was amazing.
@@rcranky64 Dylan was not at 7/7/89.
Was at this show, Love Box of Rain..reminds me of my Dad,who passed away in 2011.
Back in the day a good friend of mine had a "Let Phil Sing" bumper sticker. This is why.
The song always kills me, in a very sublime way❤
When you know the back story, so much respect and love right here...
Me too so many tears - was here - and now totally ❤❤❤ when PL&F bring it out. So much love 🙏
@@lynnchristopher569 yes that’s the truth right well
I love you Phil! This song has had a very big impact on me, and has helped me while my father has been dealing with throat cancer. I found out, after connecting with this song in particular, that Phil wrote this song to/for his dying father, and now especially this song resonates with me, and holds a special place in my heart
Music pure and simple. The language of the world. Grateful for ever and ever
I’ve always said Dead music feels like my musical DNA
This song means so much to phill, it’s obvious
Deadhead for life after attending that show!
This is a beautiful song, and it took me a few listens on American Beauty to realize what a great song this really was. The second time I heard it, I was hooked.
Loving Phil's voice on this version... made me smile !!!
This might be the peak of the band. Maybe not the best but it’s putting everything they have ever meant in one moment and you get Phil Lesh singing a song he doesn’t sing often with the absolute pinnacle of musical communication onstage live with the dead! Wow we have found it hiding in plain sight!
This song was apparently written for by Phil and Bob Hunter while Phil was watching his Dad battle terminal cancer. I had no idea, but they just shared it on Instagram and that brought me here. It makes it so much more beautiful.
I'm in the same boat as you man, seeing Phil talk about how he sings it in other stressful situations tore me up. I love these guys so much, they make me feel the whole spectrum of emotions. Just such beautiful, impactful music.. so many songs to ease my soul.
He talked about it in his book too.
Emotionally satisfying during these trying times
I was so lucky to be at this show and hear this absolutely gorgeous song, one of my all-time favorites!❤
Beautifully done, was great to see Jerry smiling in appreciation of Phil doing his father right.
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago
this is great but the real magic was in Philly 1986 when Phil broke out the Box of Rain. they did it in Hampton the show before and I was fortunate to be at the Spectrum in 86. people were in disbelief, crying, and so happy to hear Box of Rain. one of the most memorable moments of my touring career!
86
thanks I corrected it. @@Stonecrow25
bryan tartus #metoo !!!
It makes me cry every time. I miss Phil with Dead and Co. He brings a loving vibe and gentleness to shows that is lacking now. Bobby and the boys are special don’t get me wrong, just miss Phil.
Wish I could have gone to The Capital
I was there! Over 100 degrees and the stadium was shaken apart and later condemned! What a day!
The Spectrum was “shaken apart and later condemned”? Huh?
This is a great performance . The story behind the song really gets to me
This show is fire I wish they would release some 70s stuff though. Rip Jerry and Brent you are sorely missed
Not on this channel but if you haven't heard/seen the video from Duke 78 check it out,it's on CZcams and the band is firing on all cylinders. Bertha/Good Loving and Eyes of the World to die for. It's in black and white and Jerry takes flight (literally he jumps).
@@buckodonnghaile4309 The Truckin at that show is crazy Jerry doing arm windmills
I was there for this performance and it still fills my soul to this day
Love this song. Evokes strange emotions, mixed feelings.
Jerry did a masterful job of making Phil's tribute even more special.
Ex Bucks County resident listening to this song with my COCHLEAR IMPLANT’S for mine bLOVE Michelle Kane-Calorio so Michelle is surely DANCING with mine bLOVE Mom Dottie… I LOVE / MISSED you Mom / Michelle 🤟🤟🫶🫵🏼🙏🙏
Lightning in a bottle. Forever Grateful.
Rip Robert Hunter wrote some of the best songs ever
A truly great lyricist. Dylan doesn’t work with jerks
I’m a sucker for a Phil Box of Rain not even gonna lie LOL
IWT. Up front a few heads back 1st set. Second set We stayed back and sat down. A REAL HOT one, on multiple levels!
Happy 82nd birthday Phil!
This video has gotten me through so much. Whoever made it... I owe you in the next life. I vow to repay you!
Love me some Phil!!! One of 3 songs I saw him sing in Chicago in '95! Box of Rain, Childhood's End and Broken Arrow! Jerr died one month to the date later.... 😥
Incredible performance by Phil!!!
well sung phil, pretty bloody good version of one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded
Very good musicianship. Very good song.
I was at RFK 7/12/90 and that was a very good Box of Rain
It was an appropriate choice because it was pouring down rain earlier. I remember standing in shin deep water on the field. Ahhh, good times.
My first concert ever!!! Can still remember it vividly
That was the best Box of Rain. What a night.
Yep, 7-12-90 was a great show. Dark Star, Watchertower, Dear Mr Fantasy. Touch of Grey with giant dancing skeleton puppet. My all time favorite show.
Find another group of guys as selflessly dedicated to the music as this & I'm there
Still watching, still crying. BEST. SONG. EVER.
Love this song, and this version. 🤘
Very beautiful song. Genuine. Thank you for sharing.
Let Phil sing!
Magic
I was there on the field about 30 yards from the stage. Great show but HOT AS HELL that day! Must’ve been 102 degrees. Last event ever at JFK Stadium too, I believe.
Believe it, if you need it.......LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just so wonderful. Cries' have to stop watching this...
Phil sings... That's all I need
Bobby shorts, Tiger and Phil on lead 😻😻😻
Love this song 🥺
i was born this day! far out!
I'm so thankful to have seen you boys outdoor concert PARK CITY my mother loved you too. Peace.Judy
Crazy how people take offense to a dead song. It's only about the music good or bad it's all great if you feel it! Just positive thought and comments here. We are all here to feel good! That's what the Dead is about
The song I want played #1 at my memorial service... Let Phil sing! Glad this was an encore at my last Dead show, with Chuck Berry...
Beautiful ty
I was at that 3/20/86 show at the Hampton Coliseum when Phil sang "Box of Rain" after all those years off the repertoire. What a treat that was and the audience went wild! Thanks for posting this clip from Philly.
7/7/89 gets my vote for a new holiday every year but only on the days that end with the letter (y)
The LIG is a smoker, Ramble on Rose got heavy spirit and Mydland takes us to church with his great voice schooling those who need and opening eyes for any Fools who r blind by what they're thinking is Love.
🎶What you think your rib-cage is a jail cell mamma🎶
Lovin all these PA shows lately!
That;s a beauty
Great show this was
this makes me so happy
So beautiful
Pleased to say I was in attendance for this excellent show.
Thanksss...
I love when Phil sings one.
LEGENDARY
Awesome :D
Had a Box of Rain Last Friday literally and figuratively in Boston and Tuesday and Now lol
Great!
Still great, November 2023!
Happy Birthday Phil!
Ok, now I am ready for the day! This song = Best Medicine!
Love will see you through
I still miss Jerry.
Long time! See you in Asbury soon!
RIP, Bill Walton.
I caught Jerry looking at Mickey like.... "oh man Mickey is awesome man"
Happy Birthday Phil 🎈
love Phil.
I never knew that phil was singing this song on the record^^
I thought somebody else sang it on the album, but I’m not a Deadhead. I might be correct though.
this is already on youtube man! give us some unreleased 70s video!
Lindo demais...
Wmex Played it out friend Ben played it 1510 AM in Boston
lovely chord changes..
Wow this is totally awesome! I was a young dead head in the Northeast during this time and we would always try together on the floor at shows in what we called the Phil Zone. I sure wish Phil was touring with dead and company right now!
its my understanding that they don't like Phil's wife, and possibly even Phil. How is that even possible?
There was nothing like Phil Lesh bass guitar . I remember feeling those deep notes live in 70’s & 80’s concerts!🇺🇸!
RIP Mr. China Cat Hunter....another great one goes to be with some great company. You and Jerry get busy writing again I know it'll be exquisite.
I.m. Grateful. I. Was. There
RELEASE THE FULL SHOWS!!! Do one a month for the next 20 yrs y'all have so much footage why horde it..
Must say those 89-91 GDP stadium releases are outstanding.
I think they're showing another one at Meet Up At The Movies or whatever it's called.
To make profit off of it
That would be cool. they can even name it "unestimated profits"
My mom, when we were losing her to dementia and it was so hard.
Yes Definitely
I love the Scarlet Begonias from this set and then at a point this also became my favorite Box of Rain. I think because it's messy. And the song demands some imperfection to be perfect if that makes sense.
I feel like I just saw this recently
Jerry's licks at 1:39 sends shivers down my spine
Need a Pride of Cucamonga!
hell yeah that would b great
Amazing song Robert H,n,Jerry for the passing of Phil's dad
Lesh and Hunter wrote Box, not Garcia and Hunter.
huh?
Both versions very good
