- "The second set-opening Touch Of Grey is a triumphant rendition, one that Dick Latvala, when he first heard it, commented 'that's the best Touch Of Grey I've ever heard!' This was the Dead's first full stadium tour as headliners (they played stadium tours in 1986 with Dylan and Petty, and in 1987 with Dylan), and they played so well during this tour that they made these massive venues feel intimate." - David Lemieux

Grateful Dead thank you for sharing that little story 👍🙏
Happy 4th, all!
Grateful Dead Hey Dave, how bout the desolation row from alpine , 89 !
Thanks David for the nice backstory
We remember. It was glorious but then we always did sing this song with conviction : )
Just found out that my cancer is back (had 16 months in remission)this song truly touches me in ways you wouldn't understand..I Will Survive✌
You will mate, you will.
Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way...
Hang in there man...🎸👍
We alll wiill
Godspeed brother!
If you’ve been to hell and back, this is one of those songs that always lifts your spirits when you need it the most.
I will get by...
I agree one of my favorite songs ever!$
Like, now? I think this may b a good time for it, because I'm pretty sure we have entered hell but not so sure about the "and back" part.
@@m_christine1070 LIsten to the words: We will get by; we will survive.
Amen
I’m a simple man. I see Brent Mydland, I click.
Amen
100% accurate. I can confirm.
His organ colors the music SO nicely. The voicings he used for chords are just so rich and he dials it in well. Damn I wish there was a Berths from this show we could watch
Brent is awesome
Brent was awesome
The greatest American band of all time
fluffhead 710
You r damn right
Amen
Ditto!! Some happy times! Garcia had the “it” factor!
Hard to argue that ..
Not the greatest American band of all time. - THE GREATEST BAND on planet earth. - And beside this: not only a band but an environment (think Bill Graham said it). - The Dead keep me live.
phil dropping those bass bombs
Effing shredding it!
Jerry looked very happy here
Agreed
Triumphant a cup full of love
He's in Buffalo NY, how could he not be happy?
This song is a conversation between Jerry and Robert, Jerry moaning about life and work(in his head, we don't hear that), Robert replying in the lyrics and saying sing this and remember the "WE" moment :) you miserable old git
Less heroin I loved jery but what a stupid fucking drug hate it and the fucking idiots on it
Jerry would be proud these videos are being shared and so the younger generation can get a taste of the beautiful music
Michelle Honyumptewa I think so too. They were so generous to their fans and because of that a whole new generation is discovering them and feeling the love!
This Era of the dead was fucking amazing,Jerry looked so happy and Brent just killed it..miss Jerry and the music a lot
I don't know why some Dead fans dislike this song. It's a great song!
Amazing band, amazing song .
my favorite one
It's too accessible to non deadheads it's just gatekeeping how dare they like something GD
@@davidsardi835 😂
I love this song ❤
The most American band ever ❤️❤️
World
Brent pushed Jerry beyond the limits of musical freedom. What a combination
35 short years ago! Miss you Jer!!!
Anyone else tear up and simultaneously get really fired up when Jerry put his fist up at the end of the last chorus? Hairs standing up right now haha
Yep. Put me down. Nice to know I’m not the only one. One of life’s many true beautiful moments.
The most amazing moment of unity right there
Maybe he was leading defiance of a pig like Lyndon. I was in graduate school 1965 to 1968, and I did survive. I've made my feelings known clear to the top, and they don't like it.
It amazes me I don't hear more about the genius bass guitarist Phil Lesh.
As a kid just getting into the mysterious LSD dropping band the Grateful Dead, this was the song, (of course), that first called to me. After that it was listening to my dad’s vinyl of American Beauty one summer long ago. I listened to it all summer as I “courted” this girl I was in love with at the time. But it was Touch of Grey that first got me, and it’s a super important song for that reason. It’s also a damn great song in its own right, and I’d call it an anthem really cause it’s BIG, if you get what I’m saying.
A happy , healthy Garcia, saw the whole summer in 89, good times, even better music !
Year of my birth born June 30th
Nice I was only 7.
Curt Linkous conceived on tour? Just wondering , )
Yep it was.
Garcia, such a sweet soul. Great to see him in fine shape and happy.
Impeccable bassing here
This is as great a version of Touch that they've ever done...
Jerry and Bobby raising their arms during the chorus....chills.
that’s how you know jerry was feeling it!!!! all smiles
WOW,how forguet that two faces, alwalls, smiling and jocking. Both loved each.Im shure.
That was indeed a great moment.
I have a 3 year old beagle named Sara. She's ornery. This song reminds me of her when she's playing in the back yard. A catchy 👏 beat!
Man phil is an outstanding bass player!!!
Great day --- hot, the A was clean, I still couldn't dance but didn't care and I got to hear Bertha to open and US Blues to close.
Happy as pie --- so I've been told!
Fuck you tube censorship
I was 17 when this concert happened. My journey with the Dead started two years earlier. It blows my mind that I’m now the same age as Jerry is in this video. These uploads are amazing. The band was in top form. Feeling blessed
I’m a lot younger but very jealous hahaha!
Same blows my mind to think about it. Cheers 🍻 from cleveland
You are blessed. We all are!!
Hard to not smile cry to this one
On this independence day let us celebrate America's greatest creation: The Grateful Dead.
CCR IS MUCH BETTER
@@danielisaguirre3171 Great band but no.
2020. Whos listening?? Rip Jerry Garcia. ❤
The acid brought me here. It is a good pleasant place.
Man, Jerry is easily one of the best and most honest/likeable guitarists ever. What makes him so great is that he didn't have the ego of being known as a "rock star;" a title that has undoubtedly been a factor responsible for numerous band breakups over the years. Jerry doesn't front with wild outfits or stage theatrics, and he doesn't need to.
Jerry seemingly let his guard down up on stage, and had confidence in really letting the music itself speak for him, which is why his playing/singing seems so personal and really connects with you. He just goes up on stage in plain clothes and just casually plays his music as if he is your long-time friend just sitting in your living room. That's really how he seemed to act. Even in front of sea of people, jerry could make you feel like he was performing just for you. No material or visual things like you find in 80s hair metal and the outrageous "rock star" outfits that were the rage back then, which were a large part of any band’s success during that period. He just comes across as being a happy person in any videos that you find of him playing, singing, or grooving during a song. He is just such a positive light that really touches me very deeply here, nearly 30 years since his death.
Garcia just had it and knew exactly what to play at any given moment.
Jerry, was Jerry, he knew he had no use for an ego!
One of my favorite hour and a half
Jerry and Carlos just those two, jamming while the equipment was changed, Las Vegas
@@richardparker644 I'll have to check that out!
Jerry never looked like he was trying to be a rock star, constantly hopping, grimacing, pulling a Hey!LookatmeplayingTHISlickaren'tyouimpressed? look, he was always "in touch" with his fellow bandmates on stage and in constant rehersals because they had been through mind bending experiences together, paid many dues and had a VERY unique history. Not so with the lame "cover band" at all.
So well put! 1,001 reasons why people like us are drawn to this band. Sure they had their hang ups and faults but through all the bs there was something real and sincere that is sadly very rare.
@@richieboy6825 the music was entirely nothing but sincere throughout their entire career. None of their songs feel phoned-in at all, and most feel completely timeless as if they’ve always existed. There is just a great aura around the band and their music that is entirely unique in the history of “rock” bands. No one acted like them, no one looked like them, and no one played like them. Maybe the coolest thing of all was that they were breaking that ground as they went. There was no such thing as a “jam band” (in rock music, at least) until they invented it. No one was using rock instruments for long improvisational passages back then; the only thing close being the improvisational aspect of jazz. One of the most important bands in history by a long shot and for so many different reasons.
Tasteful move on Brent's part to save his signature high harmony for the final "we will" verse. Nice to see Jerry happy and engaged while performing this song live.
Strategically done!
He must have gotten a good fix.
The crowd once Brent started singing, gives me goosebumps.
Every silver linings got a touch of grey. Fucking poetry man
Everyone had tears in their eyes when they played this in Vegas in 1991...who knew we would lose Jerry so soon? I still mourn.
Carrie Berry or Brent
Yep, I was there. Intense
I was at those shows. But I don't remember them so they must have been really good!
I was there 30 years ago today. Half a lifetime ago. The whole show is available on DVD. Get a copy now!!!!!
Thanks for sharing about the DVD, Didn't know. I just bought it online. :)))
As was I
Good old Jerry, we loved you more than words can tell.
What a barn burner, Jerry and Brent are on fire 🔥😻😻😻
From a long time Deadhead to the rest of my Deadhead friends, happy 4th to you all!
⚡️💀🌹
Damn those were good days.
Amen
Worked that show as a,rookie cop for extra cash.. just walked backstage before n after soundcheck AWESOME day GREAT crowd and great fans !!
We will get by... we will survive.
Whoever needs to hear this YOU WILL GET BY
The Grateful Dead liked America and so do I!
What an excellent upload for the fourth !! 🇺🇸✌️
Have a Grateful 4th Deadheads ✌️🇺🇸✌️❤️
This must the hymn of these Coronavirus Days. "I will get by, I will get by, I will survive. We will get by, we will get by, we will survive!"
I was thinking the same thing, Juan Carlos. How appropriate for today.
@@markgross8701 Totally agree!!!
Absolutely!
Coronsvirus is a joke
Yes!
Now this is the real Dead everyone knows and loves, Jer Bear especially. 89' was a great year for them and Jerry was happpier and healtheir then. I'd give up a $20.000 winning lottery ticket to get a few more years of that!
Peace and Love deadheads! Have a grateful fourth, spread love, and remember- every silver linings got a touch of grey!!
Too bad Jerry wasn't always this happy. He might still be with us.
I love seeing Jerry so vibrant and bouncy like that. Man, he was having a good time.
Some of the percussion is blowing my mind
When they were on their game, there was no band on God's green Earth tighter than the Grateful Dead.
I was there for this show! A little rain never hurt anyone!
It made Terrapin into church, if you ask me. It felt great!
Played my national anthem on the Fourth of July!
The song that started it all for me at the age of 12. Tattooed "I will get by, I will survive" on my arm last year. Brent rocked on the keys in this performance.
Incredible concert tune and solo 😊! 🎸
stuff like this puts a smile on my face seeing the whole band enjoying themselves just having a great time and just blasting on through.
Keep these Brent shows coming! My absolute favorite era. Happy 4th everyone, have a grateful day!
Mine too. Brent was my favotite member..after Jerry.
Brent is my second favorite after Jerry. The man had so much soul and emotion he put in, you could hear the pain and love at the same time in his voice. RIP to these legends.
And 100% Donna-free 👍
Happy Independence day! Long live the greatest American band!!
Goosebumps man! I'll be wearing this goofy smile all day.
What a long strange trip its been. Listening to the Dead since late 60's. Boy was Jerry right.
Phil is ripping!
Bring her home brent!
Love seeing jerry so happy
I feel so fortunate to have seen Jerry and Brent. Happy 4th y'all!!

Amazing band, amazing music.
Seems like 89 was such a nice year for them it brings a tear to my eye thinking about the next 5
Great song for when you're feeling down
When Brent died not only did part of the Dead die but part of Jerry died too. I don’t think Jerry ever recovered musically, emotionally, or spiritually from Brent’s passing.
I've often thought that if Bruce had joined the band on a permanent basis it could have had positive results.
True story. Jerry lost his Jammin' buddy and was alone again.
I agree Jerry was never the same after Brent died
There sure was a magic connection between them that fueled the band
@@philippinto9780 And Vince was Never the same when Jerry Died...They were friends when Vince was in the Tubes and lived only an hour from one another. I knew Vince during the Tubes and ran into him again his 1st year with the Dead, and all he talked about was getting to play with Jerry in the dead...a few years later Jerry died, 2 years later Vince dies...2 great Jamming musicians in a few years time....I still miss Vince's laugh at my jokes...
30 years ago today! My first show.
The harmonizing between Jerry and Brent on the final choruses is unreal here. Never heard them do anything like it on anything else.
Too bad Jerry can't sing in tune!
@@oceanhedonist265that’s what make the harmony - jerry and Brent’s voices!
@@oceanhedonist265I mentioned it because yes, during these years his voice had declined past the point of being salvageable, unfortunately. But to my ears this was a rare moment where he actually sounded pretty good.
I was there! It was a perfect summer day and night.
This is why i love Jerry man
Heres one thing I love about The Dead! Despite the shit ton of money they made they still dress like they hit the Salvation Army on the way to the show!
Last year they made $250,000,000..🤔👍
Learned this week I'm facing redundancy. At 62, it's a frightening, numbing prospect. I've been leaning on the Good Old Grateful Dead as a result, and this song in particular..
I hope everything turned out well for you. ❤
They’ve got me through some tough times too. And I did, in fact get by, in fact, I’m flourishing!!!Hope you are too!!
Sue the bastards. They don't want that.
Happy 4th all you heads!
Probably the best Touch Of Grey live performance ever... Jerry is having so much fun.. love it :)
My favorite Dead song. I love the lyrics as much as the music.
This just so happens to be the very day I was born.
Nice
My favourite Grateful Dead song.
I was 4 years old when this came out! Legend
Happy 4th.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💥💥🎉🎉🍻🍻🍻🍻👶🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love the dead. Born in 1999 and will live my life to a beat of billy and Mickey 🍻 long live the dead ✌🏻❤️🌎
This was the best show I was blessed to have seen. Awesome setlist, Jerry clean and happy and the band just so tight. Space into Brents I will take you home>Watchtower so awesome. Jerry at his best!! He was so happy with it they played a beautiful Morning Dew after that for us. Every show I saw with a Bertha or Jack Straw opener was amazing for some reason and this one didn't disappoint for sure.. We miss you Jerry......
Jerry with his lone solos always makes me so emotional
Amen brother
God Bless the Grateful Dead !! 😊✌
Great live version of Touch of Grey! The late, great Jerry Garcia!
RIP Jerry Garcia
I LOVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD so much!!!!!!!!!!! 20 years ago today they blessed us with this great concert. R.I.P my brothers Brent Mydland, Ron Mckernan and of course Jerry!!!!
I will get by! I will survive. Grateful Dead thank you for everything
Thank you Garcia! 🇺🇸
Wow... Love a crystal clear Jerry... it shows. Bright eyed and bushy tailed!!!
Well what can you say folks,, it sure did bring a SMILE , to my face,,, brings those years rushing back like it was yesterday.
I keep returning to this song for hope during the pandemic. Oh, Jerry, we miss you. And Phil, thanks.
Watching these videos is literally bringing on LSD flashbacks for me.😁😁 I was a teenager in the Northeast at this time and enjoyed shows from '87 onward. The amount of drugs at shows and surrounding scenes was kinda spooky looking back on it. We were Blessed and Cursed. My Gratitude continues to expand.
Celebrating 22 years of sobriety this month. 🙏🙏🙏
I miss The Grateful Dead. They are resting in a peace of my mind.☯️
A moment before this clip starts Jerry gestures to his beard and top of his head to signal "touch of grey" to his bandmates. Brent responds with the same gestures. Such a cool moment that always amused me. Check it out on the full show which is on youtube. One of the best Dead shows of this era in my opinion!
What a fun day that was 🎶
I'm in the audience somewhere! I was 17, this was my 3rd show but 1st without my parents... now I'm 52, with a touch of grey, and unfortunately unable to get my own kids to appreciate this music 😢
same here my friend
great show
😊
I’ve tried introducing my 18 yo daughter to my music U2 (went to the Sphere w/ me), VH, Talking Heads, Rush, etc. She often tells me to turn down my music bc she can get it upstairs in her bedroom. Girl, that’s the point. You’re welcome. 😂😂
3-16-20 We will get by.
Great to see all the ⚘Love⚘ pouring in. Can't believe it's been 30 years since this Sweet Show ? So glad I made it up to Rich for this one, that sweet CRS among others. I had a great time on Dead Tour 89' ! I miss being on Tour, best job I never had ! Happy 4th of July to my Dead Family & yours... Ours ! Much Love, Enjoy the Holiday & Be Safe... N3's👣⚘⚘⚘
89 was a great tour, I caught the midwest & east coast part. A long dream ago... How blessed we were: great shows, great community. ✌
@@jeffreypetro3803 You said it Jeff, we were blessed & fortunate to have been Touring in 89' !!! Made so
many great memories, met so many incredible people & got to hear so much wonderful music ! Anyone should be so lucky Brother. Probably the best time of my life was spent on Dead Tour ! Riding the highways of America w/ one common goal, to get to the next city to see that next show... I suppose it's just not something you can explain, you were either there or you weren't but man what a feeling !!! Wouldn't trade it for the World ! Nothing like a night spent w/ Brent & Jerry⚘⚘⚘👣
It's truly a fantastic blessing that we can still tune in & hear Dead & Co... Admittedly it isn't what we had in the late 80s & 90s, beloved members have passed, but that spirit, it still turns on, tunes in & dances.... a younger generation catches a glimpse of the unique blessing we shared in another time's forgotten space. And the doses are remarkably close to as potent. Blessed Be brother... Did U happen to attend the last tour at Alpine Valley? Seems like it was 89 as well... So many heads converged that state of Wisconsin called it an emergency. Bid ye GoodNight closer 3rd night. The whole experience/community of Dead tour community, tuned in & taking part, sharing, sum total greater than the sum of its parts experience was miraculous & probably unique in all of human history. A spark still shines as long as there's memory of the time. Let there be songs to fill the air!
This lineup was probably the best in the Grateful dead career. And this was a good concert.
I’ve always loved that organ part and he brings it out so much better live.
I love the studio version but that's the one thing that always bugged me about it. From the first time I heard it I thought, "That's not Brent's normal keyboard sound."
Man it's great to see Jerry and the Band energized and having a great time!
