- Saturday's NBA Playoffs action saw the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder play game three of their second round series while the Boston Celitcs once again faced the Cleveland Cavaliers. Led by Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and PJ Washington, the Mavericks moved up 2-1 on the Thunder despite great play from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and big moments from Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren along the way. The Thunder are getting close to having their backs against the wall and the Mavericks are finding ways to win even with Luka hobbled which is a great sign for their hopes of an NBA Finals run. Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the Boston Celtics annihilated the Cleveland Cavaliers in game three even though Donovan Mitchell continues to be insane in these playoffs. @@TruthAndReccap. Stats aren’t everything. Luka played better defense, got more boards(offensive rebounds that led to second chance points) and created for his guys despite only having 5 assists. He was moving the ball but he wasn’t always getting an assist for it. He was creating plays. Shai got some good buckets but he didn’t help his team as much. Mostly with just scoring.

Dallas has gotten in okc’s heads a bit. Hack a lively was not the move imo, the thunder need to get back to their game, it feels like un the 4th shai isn’t trusting his teammates and is looking for cheap fouls or they are overpassing and looking for the perfect shot. If the middy is open for shai ir jdub take the shot.

The only problem is that when your team does it you say "aw yeah look at that physicality, great toughness and grit boys" but when the other team does it you scream "NO DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY SWEET TUBBY PRINCE!!! Kleber is a good news bad news thing. His shooting and ability to play on the perimeter defensively is greatly missed but Kidd overuses him and we’re seeing better rebounding and defense in the post with Lively and Gafford playing more. Where it will really hurt is if they made the finals. You need every 3 point shooter and perimeter defender to have a chance against them.

Luka is on one leg man. So he is playing like Jokic in that he isn't trying to do it all. Honestly we expected the thunder to show their age in this series. What no one talked about was their coach showing weakness. He has been getting outcoached big time by J kidd. The hack - a lively was weak move when the game was relatively close. Your coach showed that he doesn't trust his team to handle the adversity and get the lead back without that strategy in game 3 of a series when you are tied. Your coach showed a level of weakness in this series that will come back to bite you. Thunder lost the mental game going into game 4, a must win game.

Seems like Donic is the workhorse and Kyrie is the closer. Luka is a bit younger and can take the punishment even if he's not putting up great scoring numbers. Luka obsorbing some of the Thunder's defensive effort frees up Kyrie to operate more effectively and he can exercise his precision against tired opponents or at least lineups that aren't as defensively stacked.

Thunder have done this all year. Win 5-10 in a row then play poorly and drop a couple. Do I like them being down 1-2, of course not, but the only time they've lost more than 2 in a row was when they were without both SGA and JDub. They shoot their normal 39% from 3 instead of 33% and it's 2-1 Thunder right now. But the reason they average 39% is because they balance those 33% games with 45 and even a few 50% games.
The real problem is what I've said (and many others have said) all year, and that's rebounding. They won that in game 1 and won by 22. Except against PJ in game 2, they've played great first shot defense like they always do, but you can't give them 7 opportunities to make it. They actually out-shot the Mavs in both losses (except from 3 in game 2), but they're just giving up too many second+ opportunities. That would still be survivable if they were winning the turnover battle (what their usual primary focus is on defense) but they've only tied in these last 2.
I can't speak to what the Mavs are doing worse or better than usual (other than PJ Washington obviously), but those are my main takes for the Thunder.

It’s not just that. Kidd is making more adjustments (surprised me) and got PJ some more touches outside of 3s. He started handling the ball more and taking more shots in the paint which he’s good at. EVERYONE was attacking the paint more which opened up a lot. That was huge. It wasn’t just PJ but go cope some more cuz we’re coming into game 4 with the same intensity

You're tripping thinking that regular season head to head means anything. The Suns were 3-0 against the Wolves, the Thunder was 3-1 against Dallas, but games played 5-6 months ago mean nothing in a playoff series format.

What do you guys think Shai was doing in that late offensive foul? He had Jones I think on his hip, could’ve tried to ride that and finish to the left, but instead exposes the ball to a second defender going for a reverse (I guess) and elbowing him in the face, and missing wildly. My best guess is he was counting on a bailout whistle by flailing into two defenders.
