Translation of the chinese at the start of the video was (thankfully) done by my girlfriend who is fluent. It also revealed that there will be two DLC's, one in 2016, one in early 2017..and also this line that I omitted:
"The existance of the unkindled can be said as inheriting the path of the past. Using the accumulation of history as an ending."

I always underestimate how long these Lorethrough videos take to make.
If this one doesn't get a great response, I miiiight come back to them later. I'll be honest - they're tiring to work on because it's like writing an essay instead of a short story, if that makes sense. The videos I like to watch are succinct, entertaining, and don't waste your time..but with Lorethrough I go in-depth on EVERY aspect of an area - whether it's entertaining or not. As a result, they're a bit more.."soulless" than something like "lore: explained" or "prepare to cry".
However - they bring out just how much detail there is in the game..and they're a documentation of the huuuuge notes document I have on every item description / area of the game, so I also think they're important to make!
So if I do take a break with these - I think i'll come back to them after I have all the really entertaining videos done.
Feedback appreciated, as usual. I've always loved you guys for how honest you are and I don't want to lose that
+VaatiVidya Thanks
+VaatiVidya The more the better, love them and good job :)
+VaatiVidya Dont you dare stopping those videos! They are just as great as the others you do! :D
+VaatiVidya bruh you have no idea how long and anxiously we wait for these videos! Amazing content really... keep up the great work!
If Im into souls games, its tour fault. Thank you!
I really wish he'd have continued this. I loved this series so much man ;-;
such a cool and unique playthrough, i was really enjoying it and then i realized this was the last one :'(
Definitely a different take on a playthrough fitting of this series. It's like we're being told a story as opposed to being subjected to the mindless chatter and childish screaming that usually accompanies other CZcamsrs' playthroughs/Let's Plays. Vaati actually seems to care more about the game and lore rather than getting audience reactions to his overreactions.
Sadly... I love this kind of content.
Vaati's content is great but he constantly never finishes series he begins
Recently when i tried to continue playing my character, the game said something like ''the latest files is corrupted, delete them to continue'' so i did. My whole save is now removed, but is there anything i can do to restore it?
Each lord represents a thing that makes a lord a lord.Watchers are unity, yhorm is selflessness, Aldrich is power, and lothrick is birthright.
+robert pike (Godzilla2014fan) That's very interesting.
What about Ludleth, then? He's probably one of the most interesting characters to me. He seems wicked out of place: his English is old, he is old, his ring parallels him to a "Defeated a demon with an endless hunger for souls which still manifests its influence" Slayer of Demons sort of history (especially with his knowledge of soul transposing "arts"...), etc
He represents duty of a king
Duty
Robert Pike do the watchers Represent unity? Fighting each Other? More like dedication to their duty, to fight Their Own Kind to fight the Abyss
“In the next episode...”
There was never a “next episode”.
Sad shit
To be a little bitter: Vati has a really annoying habit of this. He alludes to projects and then doesn't ever do them.
Was looking forward to learning more about the Cathedral of the Deep too.
So much for the being the so called king of dark souls 😂 lazy cunt
My initial impression of what the Abyss Watchers were fighting over was that since you're unlocking the path "to the wolf's blood," and the wolf's blood is drying up, then the Watchers are probably fighting over what little remains. Endlessly slaughtering each other for one another's wolf blood, but reviving and continuing to lose it to one another, forever. When you finally manage to put them all down, the small amount of blood they each have congregates into a single vessel, which challenges you in one final defense. Or, that's my impression. Who knows.
That's surprisingly simple yet totally understandable and probable.
I didn't even think of that Plague. Very insightful.
I think that the Abyss Watchers were corrupted by the Abyss, went insane, and thought that the other AW's were beasts from the Abyss.
thumbs up
I'm not very happy with this game, not enough chances to look at bird asses through binoculars, needs more piles of bricks too.
Hey Vaati if you notice the only abyss watcher that the others turn on always has glowing red eyes. This implies that they are following in Artorias' footsteps, knowingly or otherwise, as they seem to be corrupted by the abyss. Also notice that on the Legion set you can set small, black veins creeping up the armor around the edges. This can support the fact that they are being corrupted or this could simply be a result of their fight against the abyss, or maybe both.
*see
+jaharned1 Wish I could give double thumbs up, I was thinking the exact same thing
+ZalaDa3rd i'll do it for you, because i had those thoughts as well
Also, the reason they are fighting each other during the boss fight could be that they sense the abyss in each other and just want to destroy it in turn, even if they can't sense it in themselves
+jaharned1 In short, Undead Legion is doing their job, fighting the abyss, untill the player comes and fucks it up
Now that you officially know the context of what an Unkindled is... It's really sad. Damn Miyazaki. To reach the Kiln and attempt the linking of the Flame, only to be incompatible and burn to ash in the process... That's rough man. Hawkwood's opening dialogue with your character makes even more sense in this context now. "Can't even die right..."
Yeah...thinking about all the shit that you put your character through to get there and to link the flame. To be the one to get all the way down there, went through all of that only to have the Kiln reject your ember. It's a giant middle finger, "Nope sorry you're not the chosen one...fuck you." annnnnd then after being put through that, the person who already was rejected from kindling the flame the first go around, is brought back to life and basically told, "Well it turns out we need you anyways....so you get to do it all over again and hope it doesn't reject you this go around." That's just a soul crushing dauntless task if you ask me. No wonder so many refused to do it. Turned away from purpose and went hollow or killed themselves. I don't blame them whatsoever....and with that in mind, my dude is a mad man for wanting to do it all over again.
And that is why we choose the End of Fire ending.
@@thechosenundead2718
Free the Fire Keeper from the fire-linking curse.
Lothric's refusal already foreshadows this ending.
@@StudlyFudd13 Well, the Flame didn't really reject you. That's not really how it works. The reason you don't become a Lord of Cinder is because you are not strong enough and burn too fast. And so you turn to Ash. And you don't necessarily remember the previous cycle exactly. You may have a general memory, but the "Champion" memories are kinda erased. At least that's the case with us, the MC. Like... The MC doesn't really have a personality and doesn't talk. Like...The only reason why we're so obscure may be either because the flame erases the memory of the Champion cycle, or because our case is special and there is some other reason for not having a backstory, maybe it was cut out for the sake the RPG character diversity.
The best theory about the Abyss Watchers' infighting that I've heard is that some of them became infected by The Abyss after fighting with it for so long, and so every time those infected watchers are revived, the others will kill them instantly to keep The Abyss from spreading. I think most people got this idea because some of them have red, glowing eyes and others don't.
Yeah, monsters with red eyes tend to be affected by the abyss that turns people into black goop monsters. The abyss watchers with red eyes attack the other abyss watchers while the still sane ones are trying to attack you
not just some members of legion but all that goat demon hybrid type creatures protecting watchers from intruders which video is saying was acolytes of legion look exactly like abyss infected natives in city of oolacile so it makes sense that both region and legion is infected
So in a way the abyss watchers that locked themselves up were doing a good thing
Lots of people were clamoring for lore in the last video - so I pushed this one forward. Got a Soulsong and a "lore explained" type video in the works :)
thanks for the vid really enjoy these 😁
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the princes
+VaatiVidya For me, the Abyss Watchers fight each other because they were corrupted by the Abyss. Notice that the only Watcher that fights other Watchers has red eyes which could imply that he has been corrupted. Also on the three altars that you use to extinguish flames in the keep are engravings of Four Kings, Witch of Izalith and Nito.
+Jan Bejma Yeah I commented on the red eyes but removed that bit of narration because there are so many enemies with red eyes. The abyss thing is a good point though - I only noticed this after the video was done, but there are black vein streaks coming up from the bottom of their attire - maybe that's a reference to the abyss seeping up - maybe from the catacombs. Hm.
I think you said that you'll make another video about NPC's and their quest and how to complete them, will you make it or skip it?
The blood of the Abyss Watchers converging is reminiscent of the sorcery Gnaw. I think one of them was infected by the Abyss so they locked themselves in, endlessly fighting eachother to contain the corruption.
i know its been a year but i just watched the vid. Anyways i belive the same thing you do. In DS3 when an enemy has red glowing eyes, it means they have been consumed by the abyss. And in that boss fight, you will see at least one abyss watcher with red eyes
gavin vick honestly, one of those red-eyed ones, made the first part a bit easier :P
Ever taken a look at the black veins coming up on the armor's cape?Looks like abyss to me. Also farron is directly above the catacombs of carthus where you make wolnir fall to the abyss.
@Cerason Like most questions regarding fromsoft games, there is no clear answer to that question.
Edit: But the veins climbing up the cape look similar to other abyss related things.
@Cerason Sounds pretty fitting regarding the fight against the four kings (ds1) which takes place in the abyss.
Why did you stop doing this Lore Through series? I would love to see you pick up where this video leaves off and continue through the rest of the game explaining the Lore.
I wondered that myself.
He explains this at the end of the episode, the lorethrough series became other videos like Lore of the Bosses, Soulssong, and the more in-depth character series Prepare-to-Cry.
As for the exact why I'm not sure, as I enjoyed the walkthrough style of these videos as well, but Vaati always enjoyed looking at the story as a whole in his videos instead of this piece-by-piece fashion so I'm sure that has something to do with it. He covered the abyss in other videos like he promised he would at the end of this video, on top of the fact that everything that could be covered in the next part of this series has been covered to death by both him and other channels so he probably saw the lorethrough series as a waste of time.
Not my opinion, but my best educated guess as I would love to see him return to this.
You bring up some good points. In the end I agree that he wanted to do more of an overarching series than a play thru explanation run.
It is a shame, he did these videos nearly blind as he had an early access copy of the game due to the success of the channel. I try to watch his videos and learn as much about the game as possible, but every time I play through the game I forget bits and pieces and the true lore of the world sometimes goes right over my head. It would be fascinating to see Vaati do the walkthrough now given all that we have learned about the game up to this point in time.
But alas, I'm sure he has other projects he is devoting his time to, so this probably won't happen.
He does this a lot, barely ever finishes what he starts which is annoying for people contributing to him being able to do it.
The reason the abyss watchers are fighting each other:
The chest piece of the armour gives the first clue - "They acted in the dark, Seeking out any sign of the abyss, fighting constantly with it's abominations".
Just as the firelinking renews the cycle, so too does it link the cycle of souls. Though they take new forms, or their legacies are passed on, they are doomed to the same fate.
The abyss watchers swore the oath to follow in Artorias' footsteps, and, like the great knight, fall, corrupted to the abyss.
Each death brings them closer to hollowing, the dark curse, and you can see the difference as they fight each other.
There are A few main points to note during the fight.
- You will hear a bell chime (Not the one in the music), whenever an abyss watcher rises again. It is always the same 3 abyss watchers (should you let them keep respawning after killing them).
- You don't see it in the cutscene, but if you look carefully, the betraying abyss watcher who fights against his brothers in arms has the glowing red eyes of a hollow. He is lost, and finally fallen to the abyss, so his brothers "Seek him out", due to the seeing "Any sign of an abomination". Evidence is also suggested by the fact that the rogue watcher will also attack you, should you hurt him, indicating that he is no longer human, and more a monster, as Artorias became.
- The red eyes transfers over to the leader, once the blood of the fallen revive him. As would be custom (beginning a new fight), He "Should" salute you, as is legion etiquette. But he doesn't.
About the Abyss Watcher that "helps" you in the fight: he has red eyes.
My theory is that he's been consumed by the abyss, and the other watchers are fighting him to stop the spread of the contamination.
Once you beat the first phase all of the blood is absorbed by one of the watcher, and in the cutscene you see him assuming a sort of "wild" pose, in contrast with the respectful and dignified pose with which you are greeted at the beggining of the fight. This might suggest that the abyss is finally taking over.
The Abyss Watchers are so damn cool.
agreed one of my favs in ds3
+ImAGrateSpellr 💀😂
ImAGrateSpellr the breakdancing move is hilarious though lol
Vaati,
My son has a Dark Souls 3 addiction. DS3 is a fine game but my boy is but a tiny child, not even two years of age. When I get home he yells "Wach! Dok soes!" which I've come to understand means he wants to "watch Dark Souls."
Yesterday before bed he was demanding "dok soes" again so I threw on one of your vids to keep him still enough to get him changed and ready for bed. Long story short I think you have a very tiny fan now.
What's the potential for a "Dark Souls bedtime stories with Uncle Vaati" series?
+NebirosKnight I second this motion.
There's more than dark souls 3 here, so you have some videos to catch up to. I second the motion too, that would be awesome!
+Usual Rain Totes serious. He'll get up and raise his arms if we ask him to praise the sun. #raisingkidsright
Give him Prepare to Cry for bedtime stories, next best thing until this is a real series. His childhood is awesome.
thats so cute
I report a Theory from SabakuNoMaiku.
The Abysswatchers are attacking some of them because the ones whit red eyes are corrupted by the abyss. You can see that the ones whit normal eyes don't attack the boss, only the red eyed ones do
+matboi120 yep. And their armour tells that they swore to kill everybody who corrupted by the abyss
If someone wants to kill you, then its likely you want to kill them 1st.
Wasted Thats because the watchers are a lord of cinder. They know why you're there.
still patiently waiting for episode 6
4 years later...
Well...
Merrrrrr
damm
Managed to sneak in some of that Edwad footage I see.
really? I missed it! where at?
+McBehrer 4:37
+S4 Official oh yeah! a good chunk of it, too! I don't think we've actually seen that part yet; I've definitely never seen that cool looking pyromancy
+Bordje omg, vaati is edwards fat bodyguard!!!! how did i not noticed before *mindfucked*
So technically this is somewhat of a edwad lore video :3
How do you miss the fact that the Abyss Walkers attack each other for being tainted by the Abyss, they only attack the red eyed ones.
instantly subbed. love this content
+Foxmars Thank you for subbing! A lot more to come.
+VaatiVidya When you make the lore video involving eyes of a firekeeper or whatever, look at the opening cinematic when the firekeeper puts on the visor. You can see the inside and it looks to be the reason the fire keeper sees stuff like a world without fire and all that stuff when you give her eyes.
yeah he's really good, accurate and matter of fact
"Every Lord of Cinder has a second phase where they become imbued with flame..." 13:58
All of them do... except High Lord Wolnir. I think that's worth looking
into.
+TriiiKill Wolnir wasn't a Lord of Cinder, however.
Dunno if Vaati actually reads the comments, but here's what I think is going on:
The Profaned Capital was hit hard with the Abyss, so much so that Wolnir and Yhorm seem consumed by it. The Profaned capital is one of the only things we see utterly buried. My theory is that the Abyss Watchers buried the profaned capital for it's connection to the Abyss, and ended up finding it again in the Catacombs of Carthus. They sealed the catacombs but due to exposure the 3rd Watcher became corrupted by the Abyss and led to the in-fighting. Hence why they guard the only entrance to the Catacombs and Irithyll that we know about.
+Derr Mann it seems that the profaned capital was destroyed by flame though. darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Profaned+Flame (look at the item description). The abyss watchers guarding the catacombs may still be true though.
+Derr Mann That's pretty good.
Emberpants clip was awesome.
Great video as always.
4:55 EDWARD THE CHOSEN ONE!
Edwad**
Edwad Ember Hands.
Justin Castro I can't believe you called my king edward
I think the reason why they fight each other is because they one day detected darkness among some of their members, and to keep it from spreading, they locked themselves in the keep. Because it's their duty to purge darkness, they continued fighting each other in a never-ending cycle in an attempt to eliminate the darkness that persists within themselves.
I always watch your videos till the end Vaati, that's how much immersion I find in them.
DaiZ of NB Same man
I imagined the Farron Legion soldiers were fighting each other because they thought the others had been corrupted by the Abyss. When you have such an unyielding ideology, it is easy to see black in shades of grey.
+Tristan Seaver Exactly! That's why there are black veins of abyss on their cloaks as well.
Vaati can you make a lore video about Edwad Emberpants?
My theory why the Abysswatchers are fighting have to do with itemdescriptions. The Watchers seem fanatic in their quest to prevent the spreading of the Abyss (understandably) and will destroy anything they suspect of harbouring it, probably to defend Farron from falling to the Abyss as Oolacile did so long ago. The problem is that with their ascension to Lords of Cinder Farron fell, and when the Watchers returned they where without their task of defending Farron. So as undead they had to rely on purpose to remain sane, annd their last remaining purpose is to fight of the Abyss. But they are undead and the Darkness is part of them. Slowly the madness of Hollowing makes them see the Abyss in the Darkness of their compatriots and they end up in an tragic, endless loop of slaying each other to fight the Abyss.
Great lore episode as always!
Love the Edward Emberpants cameo :)
Finally, Vaati makes a lore vid.
I've been seeing them everywhere on CZcams but I don't plan on watching anyone else's videos.... These ones are just better.
Hey Vaati, just wanted to say, I really enjoy your videos. It's obvious that you put so much effort into them, and that effort pays of immensely. They are very well made and thought out and incredibly entertaining. Keep up the good work man.
At 4:39, The clip from when you where playing with Criken during his Edward Emberpants series stole the mood of the video. The seriousness of the Dark Souls videos you post we instantly taken when I just thought of Criken's voice asking what everything is and then you and Bedbananas trying to find where he ran off to.
+Azog The Defiler yeahhh I didn't have another piece of footage of the watchdogs invading.. So edwad had to steal the show
+Azog The Defiler OH HI. I'M ED-WAD. ED-WAD EM-BAR-PANTS.
+VaatiVidya umm vaati you do know gough is not pronounced (gof) right? gough him self even says is gough as in (go)
So I was making an Artorias build and I thought to myself, "doesn't his Greatsword have a sort of boosted effect against a certain type of enemies?" I went online and checked that it deals more damage against "*Abyssal foes*". "Just what the hell are abyssal foes?"- I thought.
One thing that i read about in a forum is how apparently those are the ones that have glowing red eyes. And later on in the forum a guy mentioned one of the most interesting things: Within the Abyss Watchers fight, there will be a crazied Abyss Watcher who will fight against the others. That one has red eyes. It is an *Abyssal Abyss Watcher*. Maybe the reason that they went mad is because they all share the same blood of the wolf and by having it tainted by the Abyss, they started to hunt themselves, that's what we find when we go inside their arena, an Abyss Watcher just slayed his corrupted companion, but as they share the same soul, so long as one of them stands they'll keep coming back.
But why are they guarding that place in specific? Well, because Wolnir, the giant skeleton, *IS* also an Abyssal enemy, who was corrupted himself by the Abyss. I am wondering however, and this is the important bit: What shape does the abyss take in this game? how does it appear?
As a side note, have you noticed how the Sword of Avowal, and the Crucifixes of Crucifixion Woods are extremely similar? And they all also resemble the Blade of the Darkmoon? And that we sacrifice that "one person" with the Sword of Avowal in a very special place that concerns the Blades of the Darkmoon?
And to top it all off, what are the Jailers in Irythil Dungeon wielding? A Soldering Iron with the a symbol of the crucifixes.
Just food for thought. :p
Seems likely
+KRIMZONMEKANISM The abyss is the really strong "faction" in ds3. From the abyss watchers to Aldrich, you fight it. That's 5 bosses.
yo vaati I thanks for video! I think the reason they fight each other is because some of abyss watchers get consumed by the abyss the way artorias was. Then they start to attack everyone they see, as you said, and the other ones try to kill them to contain the spread
Please continue this series Vaati!!!
Has he ever finished series? Dude only got a handful of vids into Bloodborne walkthrough too before he moved on early.
:/
I just gotta say, man, after watching a good chuck of your vids. You show the story in a light not seen by most. Fantastic!
A note on the Abyss Watchers: the one that spawns third has red eyes, and he is the only one that actively attacks the other two. In addition, the other two actively attack him - over you. My lore theory is that everything with red eyes in DS3 = corrupted by Abyss, including that one watcher.
Related to the other two and a cool note: if you back away from them such that the second watcher is closer than the first, the first watcher will recognize that you two are having an honor duel and watch. :D
+OmegaShanic I had figured it was corruption from the abyss myself, and that the Watchers were in a constant struggle to either slow or kill off whichever one of them showed signs of it. Of course, with you walking onto the scene their focus shifted to stopping you, giving the corruption time to fully take over one(Mr. Red eyes).
gotta check this one out!
Ahahaha the last thing i was expecting was Edward Emberpants footage in this video XD
I Love all of your videos, and Artorias being my favorite Character/Boss across all the games, I LOVED this one! Dark Souls has such a wondrous fan base around it and I am so glad to be a part of it. keep up the amazing work!
It's really amazing that I only discovered this whole Dark Souls lore stuff now. I love this so much. It makes this world feel so much more real and immersive.
Great job!
I AM PART OF THE MINORITY
AND I AM PROUD
+Rellik165 Vaati never ceases to amaze with his content. Truly awe inspiring.
The guru beast that uses toxic cloud is wearing a torn xanthous outfit
I love the lorethroughs. I also appreciate how you cite when interpreting the material.
These lore videos are fantastic. I do realize that they are time consuming but I sincerely enjoy them. Dark Souls lore is complex as hell and you handle the task to summarize it so well... Please keep it up!
VaatiVidya, I have a question for you. Had anyone mentioned the depictions/hieroglyphics found in front of the three fires you put out before unlocking the door to the Farron Keep?
I haven't heard anyone finding it yet (and I haven't checked dswiki), but these depictions are the great souls who ushered in the Age of Fire.
One fire is represented by a giant amalgamation of skeletons (Gravelord Nito).
Another fire is of a woman with smaller figures with staffs below her (The Witch of Izalith and her daughters of Chaos).
And the last fire depicts four figures (Perhaps Gwyn and his royal family; I doubt it's the four kings, because these three flames represent the three founders of the Age of Fire) If the four figures do represent Gwyn and his kin, then they could be him, Gwynevere, the Nameless King, and a mother who had never been mentioned before (Gwyndolin wouldn't be among them since his existence was kept a secret).
Where the fire is placed within these altars imply the figures wielded the first flame
I noticed it today and my mind was blown, but this was something of a small detail that I enjoyed finding. I don't know if you noticed though.
Holy fuck, I'll have to check that out! Right in front of the torches?
yeah, just use the torch's ability to illuminate the area. It was an interesting find.
The mother of rebirth is actually the daughter of Gwynevere, and the Dancer herself appears to be the Mother of rebirths daughter.
David Borrell I got that feeling, but the three depictions represent the great souls who brought the Age of Fire.
EpicNameBro touched on it for a while in his first playthrough.
Great video, Vaati! Small thing: I think the Abyss Watchers are fighting themselves because they're contaminated by the Abyss. The Catacombs of Carthus, which are connected to the room where you fight them, are contaminated, their ruler residing in the Abyss itself and the Grave Wardens developing Dark Pyromancies. I believe this is why the Watchers were in this particular room in the first place: so they could fight the Abyss back should the Catacombs begin to "leak."
Now let's just take a brief moment to touch on the significance of glowing red eyes in relation to the Abyss. The gooey Abyss Monsters that burst out of I. Gundyr and various hollows have red eyes, Bloatheads had red eyes, manus had red eyes, hell, Darkwraithes, who are born of the Dark, use RED EYE Orbs to invade.
Now let's look at the Watcher that is hostile to the others. What unique characteristic does go possess? Glowing Red Eyes.
Of course that's just a theory, but it's the most likely reason I can come up with.
The editing in these videos are so amazing. The way you fit the voices of npc's to link it to what the npc may be talking about or to make their words have more weight is really smart and awesome.
Your lore videos are on point man. I can't help but listen all the way through.
The Watchers may be fighting each other because they've been influenced by the abyss, hence one rising with red eyes.
2:59 RIP Helpful dude :(
Great video dude! Always love them. Love their length and depth especially. Keep it up!!!
I have really loved this series. During my playthrough I am usually too focused to really dive into the story, which makes it hard for me to piece things together. I miss much on my own. You really bring the story together for me. Thanks for all your work on the lore of the Dark souls world. You helped me out much.
Guess I'm in the minority then :)
Same
Starting to think there's really no minority here. But if so, me too. :3
+Kamoz Me 2
yep same
+Kamoz a Yeeep. Me too.
Holy shit, thank you. This is exactly why I'm subbed to this channel.
This is amazing. Please continue and finish this series. I still want more.
This series of videos is great. I love this game but there are so many details that i've missed so it's great to watch this and understand the lore better. Can't wait for your next video :)
What's the lore behind Edwad. He needs a prepare to cry, he is the one true chosen one.
The undead legion is not just killing eachother randomly, they are killing eachother because some of them become corrupted by the abyss, and you can see that because they got red eyes.
I really love this narrative play through. I hope you continue this!
i really enjoyed how you brung the game and lore together. been hawkwood is talking while your lighting the flames etc and at the thrones viewing the ashes.
some legion was corrupted by the abyss, so the ones who havent must bring em down, but they are undead they cant really die, so the sane ones must keep the corrupted ones in that chamber.. killing each other until all of em corrupted by the abyss..
+Gunawan Wibisono There are always three: Their leader, the "real" boss, then a normal one fighting alongside the leader and a red-eyed one that will attack the other watchers but can also fight against you. For this theory I'd say the red-eyed one is corrupted, since red eyes were always considered to be a sign of some kind of corruption.
+Dragonbasty Exactly. Note how all the very obviously abyss-corrupted enemies(such as phase 2 Iudex, and the similar looking abyss things that erupt from some hollows on the high wall) always have red eyes?
Dragonbasty it's only three maybe for the gameplay purpose.
*you dont want all of them rise arent you? and we dont want to hear anymore ranting arent we?
It's interesting to note that the only Abyss Watchers who turn on the other ones have glowing red eyes. It's possible that the Watchers are trying tirelessly to purge their ranks of Abyssal corruption. Given the pile of bodies littering the boss chamber, it's pretty clear how well that's going.
Can't wait for the rest of the lorethrough's
Keep up the good work Vaati
I love so much that "coctail" of your voice, lore and atmosphere which you create (and your atmosphere is so close with DS). 10\10, I'm here about a year and I am waiting on youtube just your videos. Thank you!
04:38 "Hi ! I'm Edwaaaaaad !"
Also, awesome video, as always.
4:49 Can't believe you included gameplay with Criken and Bed in a lore video lmao
I'm hyped for the new Soulsong... Great video, Vaati. Looking foward to the next one!
Thanks for the video! I always find your lore-related videos incredibly interesting and look forward to them all the time :)
I'm a simple man, I see a vaati lore video, I up vote
+Silvers Rayleigh Goddamn it. You better not be the final boss to the One Piece.
The Abyss Watchers fight each other because ironically some of them have been corrupted by the abyss. It’s an endless cycle of them fighting the abyss.
just discovered your channel and love your content. very well done and super informative to someone like me who hadn't played any previous souls games. thanks very much.
These videos made me enjoy the entire dark souls series so much more. Thanks Vaati
It is my belief that the reason the Abyss Watchers are fighting each-other is something else entirely. Through-out the Souls games we have seen that the insane and/or the hollowed will continue to follow some patterns. Knights will still guard areas, hollowed sorcerers still cast spells, and so on.
So what are the Abyss Watchers doing?
Well, the Abyss Watcher duty was to cull all signs of the abyss and it's afflictions upon the world with extreme prejudice. But, having become a Lord of Cinder and hollowed, it is arguable that each Abyss Watcher would rise from death, turn to see another Abyss Watcher (now corrupt, hollowed) and carry on the duty that carried them in life.
In a way, it seems as if the Abyss Watchers are continuing to perform their duty eternally upon each-other, each of them ignorant of their own state, as is tell-tale of both hollowing and corruption in most cases. Would also explain the desertion of those who had not yet partaken of the Wolf's Blood, as well as the Abyss Watchers ceasing to leave the realm to hunt for signs of the Abyss, as they were constantly turning and finding the Abyss right beside them, essentially locking them into place.
The 'Final Reward' for Lordship, as Hawkwood puts it, would be the player character putting an end to this other-wise endless cycle, and allowing the tired and well-respected souls of the Abyss Watchers to finally have rest. This would, too, make sense as to why Hawkwood questions why this is to be their final reward, as everyone will one day receive this reward; therefor, what true reward awaits you for the sacrificial act of linking the flame? If followed from this logic, it even fortifies why Hawkwood left, why he stayed away, and a good portion of why he is so crestfallen.
If this is all true, in a way, his shield (which set him apart and shamed him amidst the group he aspired to become a member of), shielded him from the same fate.
Just my theory, but I rather like it.
+NeverSolus My own theory on the last Abyss watchers, this maybe a weak theory but, a theory none the less.
The abyss watcher you fight first in the room, my understanding is that he is still sane and the fighting we hear outside, is him killing off the undead time after time. You walk in and he turns to attack you, as you risk unleashing the abyss, thats when all the other watchers rise up and attack you, except others rise up still insane, but go after the first watcher, thinking he will unleash the abyss. A endless cycle.
It's not the best of theory's but, its one I rather like.
@@360chrisflip That's not a bad idea maybe he wanted to protect you by killing you so you don't get corrupted like his friends did
Can't wait to here about Aldrich!
This was quite lovely, I've been looking forward to some lore. I appreciated the extra detail.
Love you Souls material. Love the way you're doing this play/lorethrough of the game!! I've enjoyed the Let's Plays of the souls series of Scribe, which I love for how he approaches the LPs, but the way you address the lore/world/story through the narrative flow of the game is just wonderful. Thank you for everything you do, and I'm really looking forward to the next episode of this (when?), as well as DS3 Prepare to Cry videos (I think I've watched your DS1 Prepare to Cry videos at least a few times through...)!!
I think it's cool that they needed an entire Legion to replace Artorius.
Artorias was THE Man
+Zack Kerber Not only did he have an unbendable will of steel, but in death an entire ARMY of undead bow to it and are commanded by it.
Can't wait to see a lore video on boreal valley, and how its related to painted world.
+Xerxes Break Yeah all the fascinating stuff is at least halfway through the game. Getting there
+Xerxes Break I don't see why it necessarily is related to the painted world beyond the way in which Anor Londo was already related to the it; Anor Londo in the first game was in a valley not dissimilar from where it's situated in 3, the massive walls and the fact that the buildings are insanely tall gave the impression you were up in the mountains, but that's actually not the case. More to the point, had a city below the massive cathedral area we explore that we never got to visit, in my opinion, we finally got to do that. Hell, we might have already done that if you buy into the theory that Elleum Loyce was on the same site as Anor Londo.
+SteelFyire You do remember a doll is required to enter boreal valley right? And in DS1 you need a doll to enter the painted world.
Xerxes Break It's visually not the same doll as the one found in the first game. Perhaps its the same sort of magic that made the painted world sealed by the doll, which seems to be supported by the fact that Aldritch apparently had some dreams about Priscilla (or Yorksha) while eating Gwyndilon.
Xerxes Break Also, there's the implication from the corvian monsters you fight along the road of sacrifices that things ended up escaping from the painting world. Possibly up to and including Priscilla.
+VaatiVidya Thank YOU so much for doing this series! I always watch each video multiple times and appreciate all the details. It makes my playthrough of Dark Souls 3 that much more enjoyable. Keep up the amazing work
The feels... Oolacile is one of my favorite places in Dark Souls, the atmosphere, the battles, shadows creeping everywhere. The echoing screams. I'm happy that they have some sort of disclosure to that lost place. Thanks for the work, as always it was an amazing video @vaatividiathe feels... I believe they are fighting because they are being corrupted by the abyss, after all the boss doesn't fight every Abysswatcher rising, just the ones with red eyes, so there's something about them, and thinking about what was their duty the red eyes being a symbol for the abyss seems quite a reasonable thesis.
And red eyed enemies in the game are usually also coupled with darker clothing and stronger attacks, just to add onto the abyss theory.
Imagine waking up from your grave and fighting members of your own group, your friends, who have been corrupted by the very thing you spent your life fighting. And they just don't stay dead. Meanwhile your wolf's blood, the source of your strength, is dwindling. It'd be enough to drive you mad.
1080p @ 60fps at the start.
feelsgoodman
+One Man Kebab Remover some people prefer watching at 480p and they have no option for it feelsbadman
VaatiVidya
I'm just assuming it did the better quality encoding first because it took longer and it wouldn't take as long to put out 480p and below.
It's already there as of this comment and it seems like in this same time frame it takes longer to get 720p @ 60fps and higher encoded.
I just stumbled across this because I began searching for Abyss Watcher lore, after becoming a bit fascinated with them again. Damn, you have got a great voice, and your presentation is fantastic.
In my opinion you make the best Dark Souls videos. The professionalism in your content is on a whole different level dude!
Lol, an Edward Emberpants cameo!
Can't remember what video I saw it on but there impression was the abyss watchers are killing each other because they are all tainted by the abyss, as seen from the corruption on the end of the cloak they wear. so the reason they fight each other is because they are attempting to destroy this corruption.
Fair play Vat, thanks for keeping this going, you're so good at these! Loved it!
thank you, and I watched all of the 5 videos regarding ds3 lores. we want more!
Actually Vaati, Yellowinger is a Finger of Rosaria, not a Watchdog if Farron
My theory of why the abyss watchers were fighting is that they were fighting the watchers who are corrupted by the abyss. If you notice, only the watcher with red eyes will attack the boss and 'help' you. Those red eyes I associate with the abyss as it looks the same as the eyes if you fight the abyss serpent/corruption thing from lundys.
Champion gundyr gets them in his 2nd stage too
These are your best videos!! keep them coming!
Hey man I can't stop watching your videos, Im a new fan of dark souls and the 3 is my first but I've been watching all your vids to catch up with the lore
OMG YOU USED THE EDWARD AND GWYN FIRSTBORN GAMEPLAY
+Sot Dot *EDWAD
I dont think the abyss watchers are attacking themselves, im pretty sure they are attacking the red eyed versions which are probably just corrupted by the abyss. Hell even the other abyss watcher wakes up and joins his buddy to fight you and the red eyed ones.
Then why is the third watcher who is red eyed attacking the the first watcher who is also red eyed😑
+yunis abdi The first watcher is not red-eyed. He becomes red-eyed when he gets their power in the second phase.
King Meruem I don't understand
I love the lorethrough series and hope to see you finish it!
your videos have made Dark Souls much more enjoyable, thank you!
Do know part if not the only reason they fight is the desire they have to take all the parts of the soul back into a single body. Or some similar internal conflict maybe a contact to the abyss that's seemingly making each abyss watcher hostile to each other. Whatever it is they locked themselves in there to contain the fighting
Artorias The Abyss Walker was an amazing knight. Stoic and heroic. His legacy built an entire legion to follow within his footsteps.
I feel almost ever so slightly, the Undead Legion, the Abyss Watchers were almost meant to be the in game equivalent to Artorias fanboys. (Such as myself). Even going as far as to use a replica of his greatsword but with some new moves.
Abyss Walker
Abyss Watcher. Heh.
I really love how much Abyss stuff was laid out in DS3.
Unlike DS1 which hypes it up only for you to go there and fight the 4 kings. (And then Manus in the DLC whos creating it.)
I never leave early. I stick around to hear every detail hoping that you never stop talking. Thankyou sir you have really increase my soulsborne experiance.
Fantastic narrative as always
