He grew up in abject poverty during the Great Depression in the Jim Crow South to become one of the most important and influential music artists of the 20th Century. He had more cultural impact than every celebrity on this list except for Elvis. Brown even lived in a brothel for a time as a child.
What about Messi? He grew up very poor in Argentina during the time of their economic collapse, which is worse and more dangerous than being poor in America.

Shania Twain's story is fascinating. Her autobiography is a great read. Not only did she grow up poor, she had to raise her siblings when she was 19 after her parents death.
Great list! My respect goes to people who starts from nothing and succeeded compared to heiresses who only benefitted/living off from their family’s wealth.
kelseyjane Don't forget, the children, of these people, will become the heirs, that you depise much. Go back through the history of any rich family, and it starts with someone in poverty who gets a lucky break in some kind of business.
