I saw the film this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. Like The Holdovers, it deftly explored relationships and family dynamics. The character of Monk's brother showed a lot of shadings - you wanted not to like him, but he showed a sensitive side. The jazz music score was great - understated and sophisticated. Leslie Uggams is 80! I remember her back in the 60's, and here she is in 2024 landing that performance.

I agree with you, and I wish I mentioned how much the Jazz score really worked with this film. I made a note about this for my future reviews because of your comment, thank you. Also, I'm glad to see this film get a score nom for the Oscars too, but it might be a tough one against Poor Things (review coming soon). Leslie Uggams, is on a role in the 2020s with Deadpool appearances and now this, she hasn't slowed down one bit either.

Great review. Love all the point you made. I really enjoyed the storyline with him having to deal with his family and his mom's dementia. Him having his work life, personal life and family life to deal with at the same time made the movie so real to me.
And I totally get what you're sating about the white characters! It works for me too!

I'm reasonably sure the language in _We Lives in da Ghetto_ and _Fuck_ are both sort of an inaccurate sketch of Ebonics. I'm not knowledgeable for details, but neither or them sounds right. they might even be different wrong versions of Ebonics.
Also Monk doesn't just feel he should be getting more money for his literary books, he also thinks he should be getting more respect.
The pseudonym is Stagg R. Leigh. Stagger Lee is a gangster in a folk song.
Note the stuff about Monk's father being very angry, and lying a lot, but badly.

yah, I did forget to mention that part of his drive in this movie is also respect as a black author who just writes books... But, greed does creep into it as well, but maybe not greed in the traditional sense, but more for providing for his mother long term care. I was thinking about his book name yesterday actually (i saw a trailer for the film at the art house theatre I frequent) and I was wondering if Stagg R. Leigh from something... it was on my research to do list.
I need to watch the film to go deeper on the father aspect, cause its talked about, but its also kinda forgettable, until the you know what reveal... but I always felt like it was background noise to the bigger picture... Still great film, warrants another watch, thanks for your comment. :)
