Grooming Persian & Other Longhaired Cats

  • The Persian cat possesses an incredible, long coat which adds to the beauty of this wonderful breed. However due to it's length and thickness the cat is not able to keep it in tip top condition by licking alone. That leaves them a risk of furballs, dangerous intestinal blockages and severe matting.
Daily grooming is an essential part of Persian Cat ownership, keeping you cat not only looking good, but also feeling good. However the tips I give in this video can be used for any longhaired cat, be it a pedigree or a moggie.
Equipment you will require for a basic daily groom is:
A pair of small trimming scissors.
    A good quality metal comb.
A slicker brush, not plastic though as these have a tendency to create static.
Depending on your cat you may also need:
    A wide toothed (poodle) comb.
    A pair of thinning scissors.
    A de-matt comb.
Dry Shampoo specifically designed for pets.
You should also have a pair of claw clippers and a flea comb in your grooming kit.
NB: I have not received any endorsement or payment to use the products in this video. These are products I have used for many years.

So, what do you do if they turn into a flying rage demon when you try anything on their bottom half?

Little and often is key. The skin on the hind legs, rump and tummy areas is incredible sensitive so any pulling of the coat is likely to cause pain and an often vigorous reaction from the cat. If the hair is badly matted it is probably better to get it shaved off by either a vet or groomer experienced with cats, and start from scratch.

Hi. Fellow persian owner here, noticed you skipped right past the rear legs once the cat showed they weren't up for it! Any tips? I find they hate having their rear legs pulled out so I can get into the bits that are hard to get a comb into.

Really it's just a case of doing a bit at a time and not letting it become a battle. It's better to wait several hours or until the next day to tackle the bit you had to skip because the cat had reached their tolerance level. Fern (the cat in the video) isn't the easiest cat to groom, so normally I'd do part of her in the morning then leave her to settle before finishing the job later in the afternoon.

0:57 lol I feel like your cat is going look at the camera and say “ diabetus “
But how do you get yours so well trained my late cat never let pet her belly yet she would roll over by me exposing it then I go to pet her belly only to end up with scratches lol

This girl is normally quite sensitive about her tummy, but she was really good here. She must have known she was on camera 😄
