    Ive been a teacher for twenty odd years and louis is an amazing coach/educator. So much of what he does matches educational theory, its like hes been trained. Ive even used clips of him to show student teachers what they need to be doing...
    I got such a lot from this video...anything with louis in leaves me desperate to get on the wall and try it, especially as the rockover advice is directly applicable to one of my current projects...

    On the red V5, when jumping into the position, you're also able to grab the hold with the shoulder already engaged, which is massively helpful for control.

    The other thing I noticed specifically in the cutting loose section is how much committing to the ‘bit’ matters. In the first example it’s almost like you don’t want to cut loose, and so end up flying off the wall from the swing. But by actually intending to end up in a position with your legs off the wall the motion becomes far more stable.

    The editing has improved so much recently, loving the voice-over style explanations. It was hard to picture the climbs when we just got a straight shot of Louis talking on the ground without any climb shots.

    For the cut loose portion it’s important to note that the best beta is usually keeping the foot on but the worst thing you can do is try to keep the foot and then lose it in which case you’d have been better off intentionally cutting to end up in the better position.
    Have to be intentional in your climbing and practice both ways (or just accidentally cut all the time and eventually get monstrously strong like Louis to hold any swing you get haha)

      Agree, you need to work out whether you can do the move with your foot on or whether the foot it out of place for this, thus the cut loose is needed. This video really shows the half way house, with foot slipping off really is the wrong way!

    Louis' tip for how to fix the swing while cutting loose blew my mind! As a short climber this is so helpful. I'm definitely gonna try this out in the bouldering gym tomorrow.

    The timing of this video is perfect. I am projecting a boulder which has a rockover move like this that I struggled a lot with. Definitely trying these tips next time I get to the gym

    Interesting moment at 11:30ish when Nathan says something like "you're not using a different beta but there's still a big difference". They don't say it here explicitly, but seem to strongly imply that beta is more than just which holds are you using and in what sequence. I think it is useful to think about beta as how your body moves as you move through the climb. What is the path your hips take throughout, how are you pushing and pulling and weighting yourself throughout, not just the sequence of hand and foot placement.
    Excited to use this frame of mind when route-reading!
    Also, I wish that whenever I finished a project, I could just hear Louis saying "wooow!!"

    i coach this all the time, i love talking about body positioning because as yall said its an instant take on. you dont need to come back with stronger anything. (except maybe knee joints for the first example) one way i always describe it that seems to help is making sure (generally) your hips are under the hold you're trying to grab next. also hannah feel better soon!

    Wonderful video Hannah, I'm always looking forward to your videos!
    I'm not an experienced climber but I do notice the differences in how I climb and how my friend (who doesn't watch any climbing content) climbs. Of all climbing videos on youtube yours (and Louis) are unmatched in what I learn and gain from them. (also I love when my friend and me succeed when I share the tips I have learned from you)
    Just watching your videos makes bouldering even more fun, especially now where I start to notice that I actually tend to climb more dynamically and not just purely static, something I probably wouldn't have picked up on for a long time if it weren't for your content.
    I tried a double dyno the last time on a 6B+ (which is my absolute limit) and it went really well although it was really scary. If it weren't for your videos I wouldn't even have thought twice about trying it.
    Now I think about it this video is actually a nice addition to me being able to hold the dyno better.
    I'm writing to much but what you do is really amazing! It's so clear that you put a lot of work into it and I just want to say thank you!

    Something that I would add on the cut loose is to actively bend the legs backwards while catching the holds. Making the legs move further is compensated by the hips moving less, which in my experience makes it even easier to catch the holds. This helps me on really bad holds or if I have to do a jump like that in a roof.
    It's like deliberately overpronouncing the swing of the legs, which takes momentum away from the hips. I swear this makes it easier on the hands and shoulders.

    Great sesh! On the cut loose technique, this way of visualising the move is super helpful, something I've never thought of before. Usually I'd be thinking catch the hold, arms bent, pull up - 3 or 4 different steps basically, often fumbling on one of those. But by simply visualising where you want your hips to be, the rest can kind of happen automatically.

    19:59 Another example on this topic that Louis can teach is this black V10 climb. I couldn't help but notice how he gets his body(=hips) positioned high enough to get the underclings comfortably. As everyone knows, underclings are much more secure if you hold them lower relative to your body but in many cases you get a bad grip and struggle up. Louis definitely focuses on getting his body in a position that can softly hold those underclings and this is efficient, effective, amd elegant.
    I feel this would be for more advanced climbers but I love the flow he shows when doing so. I had trouble just today with a problem with an undercling and basically wrestled my way up bu I am going to go back and check if I can apply what Louis showed in this climb.

    One insight I'd like to offer on the low low flag with the rockover ; you do need a lot of strength in your legs to push yourself up from that deep position. For my current body type at least it can be a challenge, especially when the foothold is a bit smaller

    Something i'm loving about the rock climbing community is that it doesn't seem to have much elitism. CZcams comments are friendly, videos are supportive.
    I've alwayd loved playing on rocks and climbing out on hikes and stuff, but never really realised until recently that theres a community for that. I'm going a rock climbing place for the first time sometime in the next few weeks and i'm really looking forward to it.

    I read in a German book a good tip:
    Never try to climb diagonal, always move left/right and than up or go up first and than left/right.
    In other words: either stand up and than grab or move to the hold or move your hips and than grab the hold.
    The first boulder is a perfect example.

    Always great to see another session with Louis! He has such a great way of breaking down and explaining things in a clear and comprehensible yet detailed way. The cut-loose section was particularly interesting - and while it wasn't mentioned explicitly, it really made me take notice of the difference of a swing taken in a fully extended position (some great acting by Louis on those!), vs. a swing where the body is slightly more bunched up - alongside getting the hips into position before the momentum takes over, of course. Definitely things that can be applied to my own climbing!
    (Oh, and seeing the overpriced, overhyped please-don't-call-it-a-multivitamin ad is a bit of a let-down, but you do have to make a living, so that's hardly anything you can be blamed for - more of an indictment of the sports/fitness industries overall)

    Small suggestion when doing a side-by-side BAD vs GOOD comparison: our brain can't process both videos simultaneously (at least mine can't), so it may be better to pause one of them while the other video plays. This way, we won't have to rewind the video to catch the difference.

      I actually prefer seeing comparison videos played at the same time too, but only if they're slowed down a bit, and/or paused at a few points to highlight the differences. If they're playing one after the other I can't just change the playback speed or pause the video to spot the important details at every phase of the movement.

    I'm struggling with dynos. Some say that my hips are too far from the wall. but when i intend to pull my hips to the wall and stand up before i jump, some say my hips are too close to the wall so i fall away from the wall. What sould i do!?

    At 18:57, Nathan also dropped his right foot off the right foothold before going so when he hit the hold he had less swing from that leg. Easier to spot from my coaching keyboard lol.

    when cutting loose, the core muscles must dampen the movement to aim at nullifying the balancing or keep just what's needed to not lose the hand and/or for the next move

    So moving the hips is good advice, but most boulders I struggle with don't have a foothold underneath the grip I'm trying to reach, so I can't really use that technique, sadly.

    I get this sort of advice given to me frequently, especially on rock overs - don’t assume it’s just “hip positioning” and doesn’t require going away and getting stronger, this type of hip flexibility can be a real physical limit for some beginner (ish) climbers, like me, which may take months or longer to train to fix - advice go “just” do what Louis did and practicality put his heel in his bum crack, a move I genuinely would break something if I attempted. It’s definitely better, but don’t assume it’s a quick fix, some climbers climb with more arms and less leg mobility because they have….less leg mobility.

    Always a treat to get tips from Louis, however it is a shame hannah didn't climb even once. I find it super hard to "feel" or gauge the boulders in videos, like it's lacking depth, but I've seen so many of hannah's videos that I get a much better grasp of the moves difficulty when she climbs it.

      @@hannahmorrisbouldering Hope you fully recovered, back injury are no joke. I just got back to climbing too after badly tearing muscle in my hand and being barred from using it for almost 2 months. Felt quite miserable the entire time, but now it's all good, and I've got a lot to catch up to!
      Don't worry about the content, it's helpful regardless and I leaned a lot from the coaching session you showcased
