I'm convinced the people who shout about laying them down on the side don't actually use planes. As long as you're setting it down on wood you're fine. If you're setting it down on metal or rubber or melamine then yeah, you probably want to lay it on the side.
I could see some reason for it if your bench is like mine. Well used but probably has embedded grit and crap. But do I lay them on their side? Not intentionally. 😂
@@neilstutely3147 exactly, unfortunately my planes rattle around in my van most of the time but I'm not creating beautiful guitars or even great pieces of furniture but if I had a choice I'd lay mine on their side or on a bed of duck feathers to preserve their very keen cutting edge.

The hook should be at the top of what you're hanging, and the body of what is hung will act as a brace against the wall stopping the roll forward that you are experincing. If you have to use screws to secure the french cleat to the wall, you are missing the point of a french cleat. This is meant to be helpful, so please take it that way. You basically made the tool holders upside down.

Another way to do those is to have the actual accessory overhang and the cleat at the top back; thusly, the center of gravity will be below the edge and it becomes very unlikely to drop off. Nice job on the organization there.
My dad passed away a couple of weeks ago, and he and I had an ongoing joke since 2005. I would climb on our kitchen counters and place a plastic Psyduck toy on top of our cabinets. Psyduck is still there until this day. Seeing you put Psyduck on top of your tool wall is one of the most surreal and oddly comforting things I’ve ever experienced. I would have loved to send him this video. It would have made his week.

Something I've done to protect chisels since I don't have your board, is take some thick rubber hose - cut it wider than the chisel head - add a slit to the hose - slip it over the tip of the tool.
Great build. That number 7 is bloody gorgeous. As for the whole putting it on it's side business - it being best practice to avoid damaging the blade is largely misunderstood by 99% of people. Something the old boys did and everyone assumes the motive and still seems to emulate. Bending the ears of some experts over the years, it developed from being the approach when teaching kids to use planes in school environments. It was simply to stop them plonking it down on bench clutter like chisels, files, stray nails, etc. As far as resting it on a wooden top, you will not damage your edge (can't say the same for your benchtop). If anything, putting a finely tuned plane on it's side can knock the blade out of alignment and it being exposed on it's side makes it even more likely to get bumped and dinged. It also fatigues your wrists more picking it up from a non-neutral position with any degree of frequency. Best of both worlds IMO is keeping it sole down but on something like a bed of shavings (in use, not long term due to acidic PH) or a coffee stirrer to lift the front if you want piece of mind. I fixed some fabric to ply pads and saturated them with a non-oxidizing oil. Planes sit on them when in storage and I keep them on the bench for the plane to sit on in-between strokes. Keeps them upright, off the bench (to protect the wood, not the blade) and lubricated. Typically storing steel against leather is a no-no (another rabbit hole you can go down if you start chatting to bladesmiths especially). Veg tanned leather itself should be fairly harmless to steel. It's chrome tanned that has high acidity content. Both are still moisture magnets however. Maybe loading it with enough oil would counteract this? Different strokes for different folks ultimately, but keeping it upright on wood will not impair your edge at all, especially with harder steels like 01, A2, PMV11, etc. We put these things down on and drive them through our timber enough! If periodically putting it down on a wooden surface knackered your edge, you should be asking for your money back from Mr Nielsen! Really good vid though mate - subbed :-)
It goes further back than that. The idea of putting handplanes on their sides started in the late 1800's with the invention of the "gentlemen woodworker". By that I mean that in the mid to late 1800's workers of the day began to have more leisure time than the generations before them. Another factor was the rise in popularity of books and magazines, with some of these promoting hobbies such as woodworking. It was during this time (say the 1880's onwards). that the notion of placing a plane on its side took off. There is no better protection for a plane's sole and cutter than to have it completely inaccessible to anything that might damage it, such as other tools. The ONLY exception to this is if your workshop is prone to moisture to a point that any surface you have is, basically, waterlogged. In which case it really doesn't matter which way you put the plane down. It's doomed from the start - as is any other iron-based tool you have. Also, just for clarity, I have been a plane maker (as in woodworking planes, not the flying kind) since the 1980's and my family have been involved the woodworking tool trade for well over 100 years.
The tool wall looks great! But the tool holders need a front panel that sits over the front of the cleats on the wall to lock them in to the cleat wall properly. That stops them being able to rotate forwards and fall out of the cleats. I noticed you put a few screws in here and there but hopefully you get it worked out before any tool falling disasters!
Father was in the REME. He painted the shadow of the tool on his tool wall. That way when he was packing up he could see what tool required finding to put away. I guess it was an Army organisation thing.

Always a sucker for Tool Walls. However seeing a young person wax poetic about hand planes put a huge smile on my face. Finally someone that was not 75 or older that appreciated good quality tools. I also have a very large collection of hand planes that I treat with loving care. I do see from the tools on your wall that you know quality also. Keep it up and maybe win a lottery or two. Buy one of everything Lie Nielsen has then.
I'm currently at the beginning of the process of turning my one car garage in to a comfortable luthiers/makers space, and being just me I understand having to be resourceful in order too get some two person jobs done.
Enjoyed your video, it’s just a suggestion, but the way I’ve seen cleats done, and the way that I’ve done them myself, is to have the upper potion of the cleat mount on the back of an additional front board, that extends down the face of the lower portion of the cleat. This way there is no way that the upper portion can pivot out of the slot accidentally, and there is no need to use screws for example to secure the heavy planes. I hope this makes sense! Sure which I could sketch in the comments here.
You can make the accessory stable by extending the back of it to the cleat below. No need to screw it in place. I’m still moving mine around after six years.

French Cleats! They have saved many a job from going south and turning into a money pit! I've used them for hanging cabinets, display cases, tool storage walls, and like you show; specialized tool hanger walls like you built for your new shop. Keep on shining and making the wood sing!

Hi, Good to see you getting organised. Just a friendly word of advice, if the metal component of your socket chisels fit through those hole on the rack, you may wish to reconsider that design. I only mention it as you say you love your chisels and I’m sure you would hate to find them on the floor one day after a temperature change, and the friction fit letting go as a result of the metal expanding. And as mentioned, having weight below the cleat helps it self support. Cheers
I'm in the middle of organising my workshop and have just added a piece of 18 mm ply to the wall and have been staring at it wondering where to hang the different woodturning chisels, etc. You have given me some great ideas and I can use up the scrap pieces of plywood that have been hanging about the workshop waiting for a little job to be used. Thanks once again.
Holders with holes require you to lift the tool (screwdriver) all the way up. This limits what you can store above them. If you change the holder so you can pull the tool towards you with minimal lifting, you'll improve the ergonomics of the wall and allow more layouts.

Great video, I really appreciate the voice-over commentary which adds a lot. It appears from the video that there are only four bolts into the cinderblock holding your tool board onto the wall. It's probably just me, but I wouldn't be confident that that would be enough to hold it. If you've put in more, all the better.

Mine has opening doors with additional cleats on the inside of the doors so I can use vapour phase inhibitors to prevent rust in my unheated wood shop. I've stabbed the back of my hand too many times lifting out chisels, gouges and other long pointy sharp edge tools from the lower racks with others in higher racks, so I'm making a version with pairs of shaped supports so the tools can be lifted up a little then come out forwards. No more hand injuries I hope.
The irony of someone not using french cleats to mount their french cleat wall, though the one thing about FCs is they do narrow the space. Never an issue in the first months of woodwork, sure adds up over time.

French cleat idea is really genius. With things like your drill and fretting hammer get some plastic or rubber tubing and sleeve it over the threads of the screws. It will keep your tools from getting scratched and it will give you a little more grip and stability 👊🏼

Really like the tool wall with French cleat attachments. Might just do this myself and organise my tools a little better. Don’t listen to people who scold for resting your planes on their faces. If this really blunted the blade, then every time you placed a plane on a piece wood to, well plane it, the blade would become blunt. It doesn’t and those people are simply repeating an oft heard woodworking myth. I’d also be careful with leather. It’s hydroscopic and will absorb moisture. This could possibly cause the plane surface to discolour and corrode where it contacts the leather and the tannins react with the ferrous metal. I learnt this the hard way! I’m guessing your workshop is humidity controlled so this may not be an issue but keep an eye out. PS I’m most envious of your expansive workshop space.

There are a few seconds where a wood chip is visible on your lip. Thank you for reminding us that we are the most amazing tools and that the mouth can be used as a mobile vice, chisel, saw, clamp, etc. loving the slow reveal of the new studio.
I have racks of chisels and the way I make them is to run a minor diameter hole, then I run a reamer into the whole. I have a machinist one, but had I had one of the ones made cheaply out of a saw blade, it would have been as good or better, and cheap. I ream each hole so that the chisels sit at the correct height in them for a neat display. The tapered hole fits the sockets on a lot of my chisels (and also works fine with a lot of parallel ferules, I then run the strip through my table saw so that the sockets in the wood are exposed. That way I only have to lift the handles up an inch to get the chisels out, and yet they are earthquake solid.

Although you already have loads of lovely tools i would recoment a Knipex Pliers Wrench (86 03 180) which can act as a quick efficient adjustable spanner or grip things very tight with flat jaws. One of my favourite tools
Nice build. If you need more space for more future tools, you can triple or quadruple your wall’s capacity by building accessories that extend out from the wall. The plane of the tool line would then be perpendicular to the wall. Try it with one accessory. It’ll change your life. Deep wall.
You may want to consider a plane till for your planes. You do have room on the left side of your board there. Slope is 15 or so degrees, can be more for sure. They take up far less room that way,. Rather than leather, though it can be had cheap from the scrap bins, they sell 'router' and/or 'sanding pads, which are perforated so it breathes around your plane. Also, since they are stored more upright, there is pretty much no pressure on the cutting blade.
Hiya Daisy, Another multi-dimensional video, thank you. Please, not just woodworkers, though. I'm making jewellery and even helping one of my brothers to do the same. We will set up a tool wall in front of our benches, and 'French cleats' look like fitting the bill for a flexible system for various equipment weights. I appreciate this quick reminder about the procedure. Using a nail gun in any part of very high-end lutherory? I would never have envisioned such a thing; yet there you were, firing in the steel nails with precision and, if I may say so, gusto. Stay safe, Steve.
I'd strongly recommend that you add screws to secure those cleats to the panel. Over time nails can work loose under load, especially if, as here, the load keeps changing. Guess how I know this...
I'm going to mirror many other people's comments about the center of gravity... but you've heard them. Another option is to cut a small rectangle piece that fills the gap above the units you made that press against the hanger above. I think I typically see something like a dovetail or tight fitting rabbit to keep it from torquing.
Ooohhh! Nice chisels… I’m about to attempt a binding project but I noticed a few of my neglected chisels have chipped tips. Great idea to keep them hanging up!

Setting your plane on its side is passé because the sharp edge is exposed. Better to put it down sole down on your bench. I usually leave a few shavings to put it down on.

& he repeat/redo things too, & thats clear, we see many cycles of different things in life, also in summer for example the desert land becomes like empty and is filled with only sand, and when rain falls in abundance in spring or winter, after that small flowers & wild plants grow again, also, we see how humans and animals grow and how their body is formed from the elements which were in the sand which plants feed on which they eat, and after they die they go to the sand and their atoms/elements are taken by plants which humans & animals eat and their bodies grow from those atoms & elements found in the sand which came from previous humans & animals which died before, so God can bring us again after we die even if our atoms became in the sand he can make us from the same atoms we were made of or from other atoms if he want or make us be in a spirit form or like ghosts, any ways, everything in this life is recycled, learn if you want about the different cycles in life in nature, the food cycle or food chain, the water cycle, even the gas cycle that makes the air the oxygen &carbon dioxide &nitrogen cycles, even the energy is like recycled but only changes from form to another form.

I'm convinced the people who shout about laying them down on the side don't actually use planes. As long as you're setting it down on wood you're fine. If you're setting it down on metal or rubber or melamine then yeah, you probably want to lay it on the side.
They certainly don't earn a living using them....
I could see some reason for it if your bench is like mine. Well used but probably has embedded grit and crap. But do I lay them on their side? Not intentionally. 😂
Also. Want to store the planes right side up but want to silence the critics? Just cut a shallow dado in the shelf for the blade.
@@neilstutely3147 exactly, unfortunately my planes rattle around in my van most of the time but I'm not creating beautiful guitars or even great pieces of furniture but if I had a choice I'd lay mine on their side or on a bed of duck feathers to preserve their very keen cutting edge.
@@MooCow2X2 Or put a "rail" at one end of the shelf to rest the nose of the plane against, and a piece of wood under the "heel", having most of the sole of the plane hanging free in the air.
The hook should be at the top of what you're hanging, and the body of what is hung will act as a brace against the wall stopping the roll forward that you are experincing. If you have to use screws to secure the french cleat to the wall, you are missing the point of a french cleat. This is meant to be helpful, so please take it that way. You basically made the tool holders upside down.

Another way to do those is to have the actual accessory overhang and the cleat at the top back; thusly, the center of gravity will be below the edge and it becomes very unlikely to drop off. Nice job on the organization there.

My dad passed away a couple of weeks ago, and he and I had an ongoing joke since 2005. I would climb on our kitchen counters and place a plastic Psyduck toy on top of our cabinets. Psyduck is still there until this day. Seeing you put Psyduck on top of your tool wall is one of the most surreal and oddly comforting things I’ve ever experienced. I would have loved to send him this video. It would have made his week.

Something I've done to protect chisels since I don't have your board, is take some thick rubber hose - cut it wider than the chisel head - add a slit to the hose - slip it over the tip of the tool.

As for the whole putting it on it's side business - it being best practice to avoid damaging the blade is largely misunderstood by 99% of people. Something the old boys did and everyone assumes the motive and still seems to emulate. Bending the ears of some experts over the years, it developed from being the approach when teaching kids to use planes in school environments. It was simply to stop them plonking it down on bench clutter like chisels, files, stray nails, etc. As far as resting it on a wooden top, you will not damage your edge (can't say the same for your benchtop). If anything, putting a finely tuned plane on it's side can knock the blade out of alignment and it being exposed on it's side makes it even more likely to get bumped and dinged. It also fatigues your wrists more picking it up from a non-neutral position with any degree of frequency. Best of both worlds IMO is keeping it sole down but on something like a bed of shavings (in use, not long term due to acidic PH) or a coffee stirrer to lift the front if you want piece of mind.
I fixed some fabric to ply pads and saturated them with a non-oxidizing oil. Planes sit on them when in storage and I keep them on the bench for the plane to sit on in-between strokes. Keeps them upright, off the bench (to protect the wood, not the blade) and lubricated. Typically storing steel against leather is a no-no (another rabbit hole you can go down if you start chatting to bladesmiths especially). Veg tanned leather itself should be fairly harmless to steel. It's chrome tanned that has high acidity content. Both are still moisture magnets however. Maybe loading it with enough oil would counteract this?
Different strokes for different folks ultimately, but keeping it upright on wood will not impair your edge at all, especially with harder steels like 01, A2, PMV11, etc. We put these things down on and drive them through our timber enough! If periodically putting it down on a wooden surface knackered your edge, you should be asking for your money back from Mr Nielsen!

It goes further back than that. The idea of putting handplanes on their sides started in the late 1800's with the invention of the "gentlemen woodworker". By that I mean that in the mid to late 1800's workers of the day began to have more leisure time than the generations before them. Another factor was the rise in popularity of books and magazines, with some of these promoting hobbies such as woodworking. It was during this time (say the 1880's onwards). that the notion of placing a plane on its side took off.
There is no better protection for a plane's sole and cutter than to have it completely inaccessible to anything that might damage it, such as other tools. The ONLY exception to this is if your workshop is prone to moisture to a point that any surface you have is, basically, waterlogged. In which case it really doesn't matter which way you put the plane down. It's doomed from the start - as is any other iron-based tool you have.
Also, just for clarity, I have been a plane maker (as in woodworking planes, not the flying kind) since the 1980's and my family have been involved the woodworking tool trade for well over 100 years.

The tool wall looks great! But the tool holders need a front panel that sits over the front of the cleats on the wall to lock them in to the cleat wall properly. That stops them being able to rotate forwards and fall out of the cleats. I noticed you put a few screws in here and there but hopefully you get it worked out before any tool falling disasters!
This is not a "normal" french cleat, its a squirrel french cleat, i think.
They are standing on and in fact they must hanging in. But if they work its ok.
Father was in the REME. He painted the shadow of the tool on his tool wall. That way when he was packing up he could see what tool required finding to put away.
I guess it was an Army organisation thing.
Got to be careful with those calipers on a magnet, most of them are magnetic encoders and they can be erased by running them across a strong magnet.

Always a sucker for Tool Walls. However seeing a young person wax poetic about hand planes put a huge smile on my face. Finally someone that was not 75 or older that appreciated good quality tools. I also have a very large collection of hand planes that I treat with loving care. I do see from the tools on your wall that you know quality also. Keep it up and maybe win a lottery or two. Buy one of everything Lie Nielsen has then.
I'm currently at the beginning of the process of turning my one car garage in to a comfortable luthiers/makers space, and being just me I understand having to be resourceful in order too get some two person jobs done.

Enjoyed your video, it’s just a suggestion, but the way I’ve seen cleats done, and the way that I’ve done them myself, is to have the upper potion of the cleat mount on the back of an additional front board, that extends down the face of the lower portion of the cleat. This way there is no way that the upper portion can pivot out of the slot accidentally, and there is no need to use screws for example to secure the heavy planes. I hope this makes sense! Sure which I could sketch in the comments here.
You can make the accessory stable by extending the back of it to the cleat below. No need to screw it in place. I’m still moving mine around after six years.

Hi, Good to see you getting organised. Just a friendly word of advice, if the metal component of your socket chisels fit through those hole on the rack, you may wish to reconsider that design. I only mention it as you say you love your chisels and I’m sure you would hate to find them on the floor one day after a temperature change, and the friction fit letting go as a result of the metal expanding.
And as mentioned, having weight below the cleat helps it self support.

I'm in the middle of organising my workshop and have just added a piece of 18 mm ply to the wall and have been staring at it wondering where to hang the different woodturning chisels, etc. You have given me some great ideas and I can use up the scrap pieces of plywood that have been hanging about the workshop waiting for a little job to be used. Holders with holes require you to lift the tool (screwdriver) all the way up. This limits what you can store above them. If you change the holder so you can pull the tool towards you with minimal lifting, you'll improve the ergonomics of the wall and allow more layouts.

It appears from the video that there are only four bolts into the cinderblock holding your tool board onto the wall. It's probably just me, but I wouldn't be confident that that would be enough to hold it. If you've put in more, all the better.

I love your passion for your planes. It feels like they have a soul.
Mine has opening doors with additional cleats on the inside of the doors so I can use vapour phase inhibitors to prevent rust in my unheated wood shop. I've stabbed the back of my hand too many times lifting out chisels, gouges and other long pointy sharp edge tools from the lower racks with others in higher racks, so I'm making a version with pairs of shaped supports so the tools can be lifted up a little then come out forwards. No more hand injuries I hope.
The irony of someone not using french cleats to mount their french cleat wall, though the one thing about FCs is they do narrow the space. Never an issue in the first months of woodwork, sure adds up over time.

French cleat idea is really genius. With things like your drill and fretting hammer get some plastic or rubber tubing and sleeve it over the threads of the screws. It will keep your tools from getting scratched and it will give you a little more grip and stability 👊🏼

Really like the tool wall with French cleat attachments. Might just do this myself and organise my tools a little better.
Don’t listen to people who scold for resting your planes on their faces. If this really blunted the blade, then every time you placed a plane on a piece wood to, well plane it, the blade would become blunt. It doesn’t and those people are simply repeating an oft heard woodworking myth.
I’d also be careful with leather. It’s hydroscopic and will absorb moisture. This could possibly cause the plane surface to discolour and corrode where it contacts the leather and the tannins react with the ferrous metal. I learnt this the hard way! I’m guessing your workshop is humidity controlled so this may not be an issue but keep an eye out.
PS I’m most envious of your expansive workshop space.

I have racks of chisels and the way I make them is to run a minor diameter hole, then I run a reamer into the whole. I have a machinist one, but had I had one of the ones made cheaply out of a saw blade, it would have been as good or better, and cheap. I ream each hole so that the chisels sit at the correct height in them for a neat display. The tapered hole fits the sockets on a lot of my chisels (and also works fine with a lot of parallel ferules, I then run the strip through my table saw so that the sockets in the wood are exposed. That way I only have to lift the handles up an inch to get the chisels out, and yet they are earthquake solid.

Although you already have loads of lovely tools i would recoment a Knipex Pliers Wrench (86 03 180) which can act as a quick efficient adjustable spanner or grip things very tight with flat jaws. One of my favourite tools
Nice build. If you need more space for more future tools, you can triple or quadruple your wall’s capacity by building accessories that extend out from the wall. The plane of the tool line would then be perpendicular to the wall. Try it with one accessory. It’ll change your life. Deep wall.

You may want to consider a plane till for your planes. You do have room on the left side of your board there. Slope is 15 or so degrees, can be more for sure. They take up far less room that way,. Rather than leather, though it can be had cheap from the scrap bins, they sell 'router' and/or 'sanding pads, which are perforated so it breathes around your plane. Also, since they are stored more upright, there is pretty much no pressure on the cutting blade.

Another multi-dimensional video, thank you. Please, not just woodworkers, though. I'm making jewellery and even helping one of my brothers to do the same. We will set up a tool wall in front of our benches, and 'French cleats' look like fitting the bill for a flexible system for various equipment weights. I appreciate this quick reminder about the procedure.

I'd strongly recommend that you add screws to secure those cleats to the panel. Over time nails can work loose under load, especially if, as here, the load keeps changing. Guess how I know this...
I mention this later in the video but everything is screwed down yeah!
I'm going to mirror many other people's comments about the center of gravity... but you've heard them. Another option is to cut a small rectangle piece that fills the gap above the units you made that press against the hanger above. I think I typically see something like a dovetail or tight fitting rabbit to keep it from torquing.

Setting your plane on its side is passé because the sharp edge is exposed. Better to put it down sole down on your bench. I usually leave a few shavings to put it down on.
