SNES Review - Was Mega Man 7 Unfairly Overlooked?

- I finally sat down with the Mega Man game that eluded me in my youth, to see if I missed anything. Well, yeah I definitely missed something! Mega Man 7 sticks with the charming aesthetic of the original series, but uses the 16-bit horsepower of the Super Nintendo to create a truly unique entry.

Being my first ever Megaman game, 7 will always have a special place in my heart.
My first was Mega Man 2, like most people. I didn’t play this one until literally when I decided to review it for this channel haha.
That’s how it usually is.
I can say the same thing. Being able to invoke Rush is the best thing about this game.
Correction: Skull Man in Megaman 4 does the same as Freeze Man. He will only move after you do. If you jump he will run towards you, if you shoot, he will jump on you.
Yeah a few people pointed that out in the comment section, along with the mega man clone in the first game. Oops! 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah when I found that out I was like oh that's pretty cool I got a comment that and then yeah someone beat me to it
@@KBXband I got some bad advice off Reddit!
In Shade Man's stage, not only do can you press B to switch the music, but also the way you defeat it affects which path you take. Defeat it by destroying the outer shell and it will send you on a path where you can dig up the Energy Balancer with Rush Search.
Yup I would not have thought to defeat it by shooting the outer shell to be honest. Seems against typical game logic.
Graphically & musically Megaman 7&8 are my favorites. The bass line for Wily Castle 1 still gives me life to this day.
It’s like the Seinfeld theme, but serious!
I rented this game as a kid and loved it. I wish I bought it off the video store and kept it now. X3 was one I wanted to play badly but never saw it anywhere. I did not get to play it until years later on an emulator.
Short Answer: Yes.
Long Answer: This is honestly my favorite classic Mega Man title. It's probably one of the most creative in level design next to 10 and has some really fun weapons to use, as well as the Super Adapter. Not to mention it introduced Bass.
It's amazing that a title this well made was developed in only three months. I feel the only sign of it being rushed is the outrageously difficult final boss.
For sure! You know they also wrote that ending expecting it to be changed, but the bosses probably went “no time! Run it!”
The final Wily capsule being this difficult was by design. Inafune once stated in an interview that he wanted to make it really really difficult. Why? No idea. He probably just liked the thought of it being brutal.
The best classic megaman, period.
It deserves this comment
Omg, it's the legendary Snake Sanders!!!
A friend down the street had the SNES and a bunch of cool games. We played Mega Man 7 to death, this is a brilliant game. Take everything which made the NES games good and improve it further, with a much, much nicer visual upgrade, sound effects and music. I feel it's better than Mega Man 8, even. Probably the best classic Mega Man game in the series. In my opinion.
The endboss sucks so much, they couldn’t make it good even in the homage to 8 bit goodness that is the bonus mode of ZX Advent.
The chiptune remix of Green Grass Gradation really works hard too…
czcams.com/video/IYCnI88tkfw/video.htmlsi=m6ZxT-LRTXrJVpXG
I really need to dive into some more Mega Man games because I had a blast with this one. I’ve only played 1,2 and 3 (plus the X games).
Oh wow yeah that last boss is almost exactly the same, except you can actually shoot him with the buster shot, and he doesn’t shoot the 4 projectiles EVERY time he appears.
@motrongames 4 is a classic when I was a kid, it was like the 1st game I ever rented!
@@osurpless why the endboss sucks?
4:15 Actually, Skull Man did this long before he did, literally doing nothing if you stand still. His moveset is also dependent on what you do during the fight.
Yeah this was brought to my attention. I got some bum info from someone on Reddit!
I could never get into the X series but was so stoked when I saw the ad's for this in magazines. I remember the secrets in this being worth the trouble and were pretty fun finding all the upgrades.
I got into X but also remember being sad they were changing Mega Man. The original series has arguably outlasted the X series now!
During the SNES era, I didn't know this game came out in the US. But I did know it existed. Somehow a friend had a Japanese copy, and he brought it to me. So I assumed it never came out.
Didn't get to beat it till the GC release.
It's a fun game, good visuals. And one of the hardest wily's.
I had a Nintendo Power subscription and still missed it!
13:33 The Wily music sounds like something you would hear in a Sigma stage in X
Mega man music always goes hard after the robot masters are defeated
The cart being worth 200 bucks is good news for _me_ since I have one.
Not that it matters: you'll have to pry my old game carts out of my cold, dead hands. I wouldn't part with them for anything.
Same! All my gameplay capture is from original carts on an original SNES, including the brief clip of Mega Man X3 (which is by no means a cheap game either).
.... A Bots Master reference? Wow. I did not see that coming despite how true it is.
I knew there would be a small group of people who would get that, but they would appreciate it.
@@motrongames How long until a Mummies Alive reference? Lol
I got X for Christmas and my friend got 7. They were basically the only two megaman games I played until the collections started coming out
Not bad ones to start with! One from each series.
@@motrongames True. Except at the time we just thought X meant 10 and wondered why they were so different. Lol
I love this game, despite it's numerable flaws (specially the slowdown on the snappy action from the NES games). One thing that might have been already said: The MegaMan trying to kill Willy because it has "become more than a robot" is a translation thing only. On the original japanese game that line was originally a simple "..." meaning that MegaMan can not go against it's program and rules despite trying to. For some reason the localization team decided it was a great way to add (because reasons). It greatly changes the character and it's never addressed on subsequent games or any other media.
Yeah I think they kept it in the rereleases as well. Fun fact, the reason the text scrolls so slow during the “I am more…” line is because it’s going at the same speed as the “…” in the Japanese version.
First time seeing the channel. Great production quality! Mega Man 7 is without a doubt one of my favorite classic titles. I share a lot of your same sentiments!
Let's see...likes Mega Man...has Labyrinth poster in ending, so also likes my favorite film? Subbed!
Glad to have you! I saw your name and avatar and went “hooooboy this guy probably knows his stuff”. Hoping I did the game justice for ya!
Id love to see 1-6 remade to look like this.
They would need to shrink the sprites though, since 1-6 had a generally bigger field of view
Yeah. And since Capcom just likes to be lazy and just continue to make ports it'll never happen. @@motrongames
Me too
Great video for a forgotten masterpiece! :)
Thank you! I knew there were folks out there who loved this game!
Whoa man, that smooth jazz version of Earthen Womb is legit! I poured myself a glass of malbec and ran a bath.
Hahaha thanks! It’s been an inside joke between my brother and I for decades until I finally decided to make it a reality. Might extend it and throw it up on Spotify.
@@motrongames I swear I posted this on the appropriate video, but if nothing else I guess it shows that you've got a new subscriber. Keep up the good work!
It's a great game. A lot of people can't seem to tell you exactly how they think it's flawed. They usually just bring up things like "sprite is too big"
Brentalfloss did damage to that game's reputation that it is just now starting to heal from.
I thought we all liked big sprites? Big sprites are only an issue if it’s so closeup that you can’t see things zooming in from offscreen, and in my experience, that isn’t a problem here.
Mega Man 7 is definitely an underrated title. The music may not be the best in the franchise, but the Wily 1 theme is one of my favorite tracks in the entire franchise. As you mention, it's a great tune to get you primed for the rest of the castle. I also love the Slash Man theme, and that salsa arrangement you put at the end is kind of fun (even though the instruments sound synthesized and not played live).
Yeah there was no way I was gonna put live instruments in there. It’s all for the kitsch so not worth the insane effort. I put live instruments in my Sunset Riders song and it took me over 2 weeks to complete. Never again!
@@motrongames No worries. I didn't realize that was your arrangement of it. Nicely done.
How does this channel have so few subs!? Can easily see this one getting big. Subbed!
Thank you sir! Love hearing words of encouragement like that! Haha any tips for getting more subs?
Woooow, the not knowing that the buster can be charged and that the store existed felt so 8yo me in the 90’s 😂😂😂
Renaming the channel “Moron Games”
Fun fact about the versus mode ( at least I read this a long time ago): They wanted to make it larger and more expansive, but due to the short deadline, they decided to not include it... that is, until one "vigilante" coder made the version we have in the game more or less over night and secretly snuck it in. So even if it was not the complete vision they had, they left that small mode in, because: "why not?"
That’s pretty damn ambitious of them to try and cram in a versus mode in a 3 month development cycle! Still a kooky Easter egg.
Great review! Mega Man 7 can feel a bit slow and clunky, especially compared to X, but it's still still a better game than X2 and X3. Fight me!
Thanks! I’m glad it keeps the general pace of the originals. Why fix what isn’t broken? And the X games are a little bit too chaotic and bouncy at times. I remember my fingers hurting because I was trying to dash jump off a wall and around onto a ledge to get an energy tank.
MM7 suffered from coming out after X and X2. Games with a "darker" appearance, heavy-metal sound tracks, and fast paced action. Not to mention the body armor upgrades and introduction of the Ultimate Bad-ass, Zero. Going from playing the X titles to MM7 back in the day just felt like taking a big step back.
As an adult, I appreciate 7 a lot more than i did back in the day. There are truly some gems in the soundtrack, and I always thought Bass was an awesome character.
I wish that he (Bass) would have gotten his own game in the style of the X games. His double jump ability was almost a cheat-code in Mega man and Bass; the game was too easy playing as him.
It’s funny how everyone wanted more gritty and mature games, and then we hit a point where we were all like, “you know what? Those old cutesy games were actually pretty good”. Zelda Wind Waker comes to mind. Far better than the more “mature” Twilight Princess that everyone lost their mind over.
7:42 I believe that was there since the first megaman. Not sure if it had that much of a delay, But I do remember it having that.
It’s possible, I haven’t played them in a while!
@@motrongames The only reason why I remember it's because my friend pointed it out. He was tapping the forward button and said "Look at his toes!!!"
Good video! Growing up, I loved the classic Mega Man series on the NES. When Mega Man X came out, I thought Capcom had completely abandoned classic Mega Man in the 16-bit era. A couple years later when Mega Man 7 was released, I was incredibly excited to finally see classic Mega Man on a 16-bit console. Mega Man 7 is a great game! Although, I equally love the Mega Man X games (well, most of them).
Haha I was about to question that last sentence. I haven’t played the “bad” X games, but from what I hear, they are quite disappointing. The main series thankfully has remained rock solid!
@@motrongames Yeah, the main series is pretty strong. I usually stick with Mega Man X, X2, and X4 in the Mega Man X series. Mega Man X3 is decent, but definitely feels rushed. Mega Man X5 is mediocre at best. I honestly would recommend skipping Mega Man X6 completely. I can't comment on Mega Man X7 or X8 as I never played them.
My first megaman ever. From the music to the story to the gameplay. Everything felt (and still feels) perfect to me 💙
Awesome! Hope my video did it justice!
Great review dude!
Hey man thanks for stopping by! The feedback is much appreciated!
Mm7 is awesome, Proto-Shield , Rush adaptor it’s amazing!
Proto-shield LOOKS cool, but the no running and blocking thing is a bit of dealbreaker for me!
Very nice review, and thank you for unlocking the memories (wow, that sounded so old-timer). Made me realize this is one of the best SNES games and one of the best Megaman games as well.
If I'd pin the most core identity elements of the SNES in regard to its games, I'd say this: heavily exploration-oriented gameplay with insane environment variation in levels. And this game got this at the maximum.
Y̶o̶u̶ d̶i̶d̶n̶'t̶ e̶v̶e̶n̶ m̶e̶n̶t̶i̶o̶n̶e̶d̶ t̶h̶e̶ s̶e̶c̶r̶e̶t̶ v̶e̶r̶s̶u̶s̶ m̶o̶d̶e̶ or the brilliance of the museum stage (although you briefly showed some of it). The 3 month thing is incredible for a so polished and complete experience; I tend to think that part of it is just BS. Back in the days (old-timer again) they used to have those Robot Master Contests and I think that getting all those submissions earlier made their creative juice flow and allowed them to plan ahead the overall aspects of the game.
BTW, Cloud Man is basically Raijin from the Japanese mythology.
That’s a fun little fact at the end there! Yeah I try to keep the videos short, but I don’t always succeed. That’s why I leave out a few details. I would love to break down each of the levels and enemies and weapons more, but it took me almost a month to make this as it is! Thanks for the support!
Nice video, but I am surprised you didnt mention the idea of an intro stage, how initially only 4 robot masters are available, the extra stage afterwards, and the final 4 robot masters being unlocked then. As someone who ignored Megaman X and just played the main series chronologically, I was really surprised by these inclusions. Still, i dont mean this like I'm upset that you didnt. Its not that important. Good job covering the game
I have a problem keeping these videos short, so I will omit some details just to be quicker. I do believe I mention that you fight 4 at first and 4 later though. I’m not against it, but I prefer all 8 at once.
@@motrongames No problem, I respect youtubers who do try to keep things short. I see the 4-4 divide as an interesting experiment, but one that didn't stick around, and even the developers must have had mixed feelings on, as there are cheats to start the game with all 8 robot masters available
this game feels like it had so much development time that it shocked me when i learned it was made in three months
Yeah I would understand if there already was a mega man on SNES that used the same assets, but everything was built from scratch. I guarantee no one saw their family for those 3 months.
@@motrongames lol
Recently completed this game and had NO idea there was a shop.
You’re an incredible player then because I could not have done it without that shop.
@@motrongames just lots of save states. :P
I feel like people overlooked it for 3 reasons.
1. The X series was already 3 games in by the time 7 dropped, so it looked antiquated.
2. The Classic Series was supposed to end at 3 or even 6. Mega Man fans debate canon selection to a greater degree than even Marvel or Star Wars fans.
3. A vocal portion of the fanbase will screech at the mere idea of a Mega Man Classic game not having NES-style graphics and sound, and did just that when 11 wouldn't replicate the aesthetic the same way 9 and 10 did.
1: I think X3 had not yet been released, but I think by then people were even tired of X
2: I purposely didn’t dive into story or canon in this video because I knew it would be a rabbit hole to go down. Thankfully no one got pissed at my Hallmark Christmas Movie joke!
3: haha I kind of get where they’re coming from, but also, imagine how abandoned this game would be if it came out on the SNES with NES graphics? The gameplay is very similar to the NES games and that’s good enough for me!
I really enjoyed Mega Man 7, but Dr. Wily’s second form was a pain-in-the-you-know-what. Took me forever to defeat him.
Gotta work that strat I posted in the video! I can beat him reliably in one shot by doing that (you can see it in action in the full game playthrough I posted). Without that strategy it’s damn near impossible.
Fun video. I bought this when new and was pretty disappointed, mostly in the music and huge sprite size. I much prefer the sprites and music style in the SNES X games, but over time I warmed to it as a cute black sheep. Also its the only megaman game I have never beaten and I own a lot of them. That end boss is brutal.
You should give it another go! Use the boss strat I describe in my video and you should be able to take Wily out!
This is probably still my favorite classic series game and I know I'm in a minority. It has my favorite art style and I think as an overall package the soundtrack is one of the best in my opinion.
Quite a few folks in the comment section showing this game some love! The art style is my favourite.
I got this on my new 3ds xl by the eshop (before closure). I may have a look at it now that I have viewed this!
Definitely worth a try! Like a hot warm bowl of comfort food.
Oh, Turbo Man's stage isn't nearly as bad as Quick Man's.
At least you can see where they're coming from and you can slide this time.
I should find a ROM hack of Mega Man 2 that has the slide added, I'll bet it makes those beams way easier.
There were so many spots where I _almost_ made it...
I remember beating that part, but only after intense memorization.
No, Turbo man is way worse. Quick Man stage is awesome
I truly love this game. I was a megaman fan in the nes but to be honest i only player 2 and 3. Later my mom gave me megaman x for the snes and few months later i got megaman 7. I forget about the detaisl of that game until today. During my lunch time today i played and saw all the amazing things. The intro is cool, the joke of the robot, protoman and bass... And ending witn megaman saying that is more than a robot. This is one of the best games in the series and one of the best snes games
I hope this video brought back those awesome memories! Thanks for watching!
I love Mega Man 7. It's probably my favorite game in the series.
This was my first time playing it and it’s safe to say that I’m a new fan!
@@motrongames Great to hear, welcome to the club
I dunno why but that Botsmaster joke hit me just right. Talk about obscure but accurate lol
That was for you then, my guy 😎👉👉
i remember renting this game with a few other games around the holiday one year, not knowing even that there was a mega man 6 since i was already at mega man x3 at that point... needless to say i wasnt having it with this game but after the rental store sold out and i grabbed this title i spent time on it and found all the secrets to it pre internet days... i got so good at it that i knew the secret password by memory at the time and showed it off to a gaming store clerk when the gamecube ps2 versions were out and found out it was the clerks save file that he was using so using the code opened up the secret games and he was still shocked that i knew that 16 digit code password by memory... that and like 3 other mega man passwords at the time, the years that went by knowing all the secrets to this game that is honestly really an easy title of the 8 from that era...
There are a couple folks in these comments who had the same experience. At first, they weren’t big on the game, but grew to like it. It’s funny how certain things stick in your memory from when you were a kid, but today I’ll forget a verification code that’s been texted to my phone in 10 seconds.
Im from Argentina and even here it was well known...
and its an incredibly good game.
and i DID found all the things by myself, it's not that hard...
Did you use rush search everywhere?
@@motrongamesemmm pretty much ^^'
I bought it in 1995, just a few months before X3. Mega Man was my jam
It was a good year for mega man!
Excellent Video! I agreed with a lot of the points here and the editing and general writing of this was great! MM7 is one of my favorites from the series, alongside 10 and 8.
Thank you! Takes a few weeks to put one of these together due to the sheer number of edits and effects. Glad you appreciated it! I still need to try the “newer” mega mans aka 9 and 10.
Its one of the better classic Mega Man games easily, it simply got overshadowed by Mega Man X that released prior and a lot of people considered this game a step down because of how good X was.
Too late for mainstream audiences, too early for nostalgia. Poor Mega Man 7…
It never even occurred to me that the starting gun took too long to charge, but it did start to bother me that charged shots were nerfed to only doing double damage when all the NES and GB games had them do triple damage. This series seemed to have had a hard time balancing the Buster such that it's neither so overpowered that acquired weapons are pointless nor so underpowered that fights become a painful slog when you're forced to rely on it. It is nice that the charging doesn't disrupt the music as much on this system, but I could see its high pitch becoming just as irritating as the text beeps!
Yikes are you on adderall this made no sense
It’s funny because as I was editing the video, I was getting annoyed with the charging sounds in the clips I was including…
But you’re right, the buster is nerfed, and the half charge in some cases does the same amount of damage as the regular shot, which is ridiculous. But I don’t mind that they’re trying to ween us off the buster, the weapons are great. It would be a shame to not use them.
A timeless amazing game, timeless good.
Definitely! This was my first time playing it and I had an awesome time.
MM7 soundtrack and the extremely slow movement didn´t present itself as the MM game we are used to, it was way too "teenie" for my taste, especially music wise.
I like it because it’s a traditional Mega Man to be honest. I remember being worried that the old school way of doing mega man was done when X was released. Oddly enough, the original series is the one that is still being produced!
Awesome 👍 good job 👏 I have just joined your channel and we are connected now 🙂
Thank you and welcome!
Favorite when it comes to classic Mega Man game, and second being Mega Man and Bass. The music in 7 is so damn good. Wily pod is still trash to fight though lmfao.
There was no way I was going to dedicate hours to “figuring out the trick”. As much as I wanted to beat him with good moves and dodges, the tank, wild coil trick is the best way hands down.
The ending of this game is what inspired Dr. Light to make X.
He went "Oh my God, Rock has lost his mind! I gotta build a better one of these robot kids that understands some damn ethics!
Yeah... Just keep looking at the flowers, Rock. ::BANG!:: 😢😢😢"
Mega man 7 was Mega Man’s “Skynet goes live” moment.
I mean, that game have Gutsman in it, that's a game even Wily would recommend
And to be fair, things go pretty well for Wily at the end of this game.
I liked it even after playing X first but my god did I ever get filtered.
I liked it playing it 30 years later!
this is a cool video, I really like your style
Thank you! Still figuring things out, but I’m glad it’s hitting the mark with some folks!
Mega Man VII is one of my favorites of the regular series.
It might be one of my favourites now as well!
4:23 and this is actually wrong because skull man in mega man 4 had this behavior before this guy
Yeah it was pointed out in a few other comments. Time to fire my fact checker!
One of the best. I've always loved it. 😎
Totally one of the best in my opinion as well
hmm best megaman from my memory
It’s a good one!
Megaman 7 visuals and soundtrack always makes me to play it even when there are better megaman games ❤❤.
I dont mind if megaman 2, x is better. I will always love to play 7. Even though i cant complete half of it 😂😂
It’s a pleasing game all around. Except for the shop music 😬
The megaman clone was the first reactive boss
That’s right! I forgot about non-robot master bosses..
What about SkullMan? He also wouldn't move at all until you made a move.
@@BagOfMagicFood i was playing them in order so I haven't got to MM4 yet
Yes. Yes it was!!
Agreed
Megaman felt clunky and slow. Bots were just ok. A prequel sequel less shiny than X wouldnt do well. Shade man had Ghost n Goblins music
X really was the main reason the game didn’t well. Compared to old Mega Man the pacing was just fine.
Buy the Japanese cart its way cheaper you just have to break off the studs where the cart reader is on the console so the game can fit.
Wow I had no idea. Does this work with PAL games?
Not my favorite but i go back to 7 more then 5 7 soundtrack is one my favorite next to 2 3 and x
No soundtrack can top mega man 2 imo
It's a masterpiece!
I’m glad folks feel this way!
The sound and music were very weak. It would’ve been better had they did those two better
I hear mixed reviews. I thought it did the job just fine but didn’t stand out except for a few tracks.
and very nice video btw...
Mega man 7 and 8 were my least favorite classic Mega Man games.
X6 and X7 are still better for me.
I haven’t played 8, but I wasn’t impressed with what I saw on CZcams.
I have this game CIB! It is great. #RETROGAMING4EVER :)
Damn that’s a nice one to have! I was tempted to pick up a copy recently but that kind of cash doesn’t just grow on trees sadly.
4:16 **Skull Man has left the chat**
Yeahhhhh it’s been brought to my attention more than a few times. I’m going to put a disclaimer up somewhere at this point
@@motrongames lol whoops sorry, didn't mean to add to the pile now that I know that 😅
