    That looks really, really good. With using the air brush it has made the paint look 3D. I have to say though that just before you cut to the finished painting with the initial big areas on I thought looked a little better as that really gave the 3D impression. Great project, well done!

    That bowl looks great, Keith. Although I've seen some other very nice pieces that use these paints, I share your taste for fewer colors. Yours is a great choice of colors.
    One minor thought, you commented about truing up the face even though you'd later be reshaping it. I find that if I don't get my blanks balanced by truing them up, then the vibrations tend to transmit to the other parts I'm working on. Maybe if I had a more substantial lathe, I wouldn't have this problem, but truing up early seems to be worth the effort for me.

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  Před 7 lety

      Thanks barry. Yes,like I said in the video,by trueing up the blank it makes it so much easier (and safer) to work on. It's not necessarily the lathe,I had no problems with my little Axminster 1218.

      Hi Johnny. The possibilities are endless,but the colours aren't. They are very limited at the moment,and the red isn't a vivid red. I think a solid acrylic might be better suited.

    That a really nice effect mate, I wonder if while the colour is still wet, putting it back on the lathe at a moderate speed so the colour runs outward might look interesting, but no so fast that it coats your lathe and shed lol.

  • @gilgrace1915
    @gilgrace1915 Před 7 lety

    Love it! Wow, you even stayed inside the lines! I always have trouble with that part. ;-) I don't know if you ever use lacquer as a top coat, but I discovered a simple way to achieve a dipped in glass look. First lacquer based sanding sealer then I sand with 400 to 600 after each coat of high gloss lacquer, after the final coat I use automotive polishing compound to make it very smooth then a coat or two of furniture wax. Like glass. :-) Probably old news to some but a new idea to me...and its cheap too.

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  Před 7 lety

      Gil Grace Hi Gil. I made a tea-light holder and used car laquer spray on that,and it turned out well,but have never tried the polish on top of that,so I'll give it a go on the next painted thing I do😀

    • @gilgrace1915
      @gilgrace1915 Před 7 lety

      Mine was clear lacquer as a top coat. I like to show off the grain. I see I failed to mention that I lightly wet sand with 400 or 600 grit between coats. 600 grit on the final coat then polish. sorry, I should have made that part more clear. Again, love the bowl.

    Another excellent go at wonderful project idea, I wish those colors could be had here in Italy, but why should I expect for anything like that to happen, ahh? I mean, freaking Italy, Rome, center of the world art and history, to have something simple as iridescent paint... They don't have anything other then pasta and pizza here man, maybe I should try turning some pasta and pizza.... Anyway, rant over, super job!!

      The paints actually come from Australia,and are imported to the U.K. Try e-bay,I've seen them advertised on there. If you have no luck let me know,and I will order you some and happily send them over to you.
      Cheers,

I have never done a platter and never played with colors but I will give it a shot! Where would I get Iridescent color's you think? Also when you do your platters what are the woods you like to use? Sorry about all the questions I did subscribe and will look forward to watching more of your video's! How long have you been turning and do you sell some of your turnings?

      Hello Larry,This is the website where you can get the paints,and they sell on e-bay as well.www.josonja.com/If you're going to colour a piece with iridescent paints you have to paint the thing black first,so it doesn't really matter which wood you use,but I do prefer a medium hard wood,like tulipwood,maple,cherry,ash.I've been turning for 3 years now,and have just started selling one or two pieces on my website. www.woodturningat54a.com Hope this all helps! :) Keith.
