Hiking With Our Horses (plus, River gets stuck! 😱)

For River's birthday we did something special! Happy 6th birthday River!

How do you encourage/'allow' investigative behaviours like River's without turning it into like, I sniffed the ground and got food, now i"m going to sniff the ground forever? If that makes sense? Or, I guess do you have a 'cue' or an indicator for the horse that says you do whatever you want to do and you will get food, I'm not asking or trying to modify your behaviours?

I have cues that indicate when she’s “in the lead” and I’m following her (but she still has to stay on the lead line and within a certain distance of me.. think of it like loose leash walking a dog) , and cues that indicate when she needs to stick beside me and follow my lead (like a heel position with dogs). I also have cues for grazing and then stopping grazing and resuming walking.
