What a legend man. Never did he say "I" but always "we". He gives credit to everyone who works on the scene and is humble enough to appreciate every single detail
Harry Pachchala the movie still sucked tho
@@tomnascimentovassao7400 90 percent of critics, even the dc haters agree that the movie was really good and an experience for the eyes
Harry Pachchala I agree the movie was great. The unfortunate thing is that over 30% of critics (RT) didn’t like it.
FrugalFellowsFashion most people did tho and that’s what’s important.
I always said "we" during an interview and got hated on for it
Yeah. The camera works in this movie is my favorite thing about the movie. I wish more superhero movies were like this.
Agreed
Iya pas adegan atlanna berantem di rumah kameranya keren
Well they had the similar thing in civil war
@@wvttie nope. Civil War got shaky cam.. bad shaky cam. Just like the subway scene in Captain marvel.

I absolutely loved the shot where Aquaman and Mera are diving with the flare and the trench people are chasing them.
omg that sequence was beautiful
Best part of the movie.
That kiss scene also !!
Too bad there were no music .
That was awesome. I'm a marvel guy but i gotta say, this was DC's best film in years. I enjoyed it better then Spider-Man homecoming and Black Panther.
We critique CGI so much but the amount of talent it must have taken to make a car park scaffolding look like rooftops in Greece. And the pure genius to marry the real with the CGI and have those camera movements as well. Just amazing. James Wan I'll support anything you do.
Ramona Flowers :’D exactly my thoughts.
Italy*
Scaffoldingman the movie coming soon...
Italy *
Ramona Flowers it’s Sicily but you’re right
I'd watch him break down the whole movie for 12 hours.
Me too
Director commentary with the blu ray release 🤔
clever guy-the movie feels like a video game
I think Director Wan's history with horror movie visuals really shined there. I was both in terror and awe during that scene.
Yaaaasss
James Wan Thank you for a Great Aquaman movie. This had so many cool moments and story and love the way Atlantis looked and staying true to the comics
It sucked
Sea Demon Kraken was created by Zeus, Poseidon and Hades to kill Kronos. Based on myth only the trident can control it.
@@GerardoTostado like your mom?
Gerardo Arreola you suck!
This movie was so awesome.. I have to sea it again 😂😂😂
this dude had alot of fun making this movie i can tell :D.
ikr you can tell he's very passionate about it
Cause wb gave a lot of freedom this time around
Definitely can see James had a lot of fun making Aquaman and having cast who all got along and and had fun on set without any dramas I remember when he directed Fast 7 there were stories printed about how not all the cast got along
I imagine he had fun with Fast 7 considering that movie was way more practical than we'd think.
The way the camera moves in this movie is awesome. It doesn't feel stagnant but it's subtle enough to not be annoying. The wide shot for action made it the easiest to follow in recent memory for a superhero film. And the scale of the film always reminded you how big the environment was. Really fun to watch
I know, the way James Wan does it, he not only lets the audience see the action, he lets them be part of it.
Dude I agreeZ Marvel films especially are SOOO choppy and confusing, almost headache causing. This was just simple and great
I felt like I was in the movie at one point, but I have to admit, at the start the camera kept zooming in on characters and it felt like a parody, it was still amazing.
I'm not a film buff, but I hate when the camera zips around or Batman v Superman style weird cutaways, I just realised that the camera didn't once distract me in this film.
Man he seems like such a cool, humble guy, and he is very talented, im glad he is getting recognized
he is actually a really known director. He directs famous movies like the conjuring series, fast&furious7, and many more
@@JoeMama-sd2kl well you are right lol, i meant in the last years he has been killing it
I’m pretty sure people know who James Wan is, give him the more recognition he deserves and put his name in the title
Totally agree with you.
Dude co-created the saw, insidious and conjuring franchises and has directed a fast and furious movie so I'd definitely have to agree with you on that one, it's not like the things he's involved with have become global box office phenomenons...oh wait
They do that with all of their breaking down videos. Even infinity war's video included "infinity war's directors"
@@chiara2973 Not all of them, they credit Tommy Wiseau, Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone, Hero Murai, Jonathon Nolan and John Krasinski by name to name a few.
Watching this breakdown makes me even more annoyed that Aquaman got snubbed for the VFX Oscars noms
Tracy Low It’s a shame !
They haven't announced Oscar nominations yet though
@@Natsirt39 the shortlist is already out
@@readandrant I'm an idiot! I had no idea.
Them nominating Black Panther for VFX over this is just annoying. It seems like people will hate or avoid anything that are not Marvel it's quite sad.
wtf is this not nominated for an Oscar in VFX. The guy is a genius.
Because this is fairly standard CGI it's nothing groundbreaking or outstanding, you clearly don't understand the art of film making but I'll try to be helpful, watch this
czcams.com/video/bL6hp8BKB24/video.html
You'll have a much better understanding about how a film/movie is made
SujeshRK what, and black panther, and Mary Poppins does?
@@SujeshRK
Thanks man, but i am not referring to this scene alone. The underwater scene, the creatures and monsters, the weapons. You cant say that all those elements are in tis movie dont deserve at least a nomination.
@@SujeshRK u haven't watched Aquaman yet I can tell.
@@matmath5914 I can partially agree with Black Panther, the water fall and the final third act is poor, visually, however it also has some good CGI because you can't deny it builds an afro-futuristic world where the CGI builds on top of the world enhancing the story. Same again for Mary Poppins Returns. It's about story, world building and seamlessness. Mary Poppins Returns, is also a musical which therefore adheres to the academy. The CGI in Aquaman is just purely spectacle, it's a fun spectacle but laser Sharks don't warrant an Oscar nomination.
I loved the action scenes, they felt so natural, especially this one.
great observation, he's amazing, he keeps the scenes and action moving without any of the stop and start that cause the loss of momentum in most and are too often clumsy in so many superhero movies. He never stalls long enough to make the viewer bored but gives enough pauses in the story for the change of pace that gives the action more impact... he's amazing. The overblown fight scenes in so many superhero movies become boring, James... has perfect timing...
There has been better comic book movies, but I don't think there has ever been one to look better than this. It's a visual masterpiece and deserves credit for it.
Only one that comes close to it was the watchman,,, which is also dc
Honestly this was one of my most favorite superhero movies in a long time, but it helps that I love the director, the actors and aquaman has always been my favorite superhero
@L true
@L but they weren't as bright and bold, my main problem with these two will always be how grey/blue they look
the transition in this movie are just priceless
OMG yeah... Nobody mentioned it but I think its genius.......
yes the transition were smoother then butter
Please just have him direct all future DC films
James gunn is directing suicide squad 2 i heard...
Stefanus Immanuel dc’s future is bright.
And I don’t wanna be that guy, but with Spider-Man 2 and Avengers 4 being the only
Two anticipating MCU films for me, I have to say dc could make one helluva comeback.
James wan and patty jenkins
I want him to do a batman horror film
What other DCEU movies are confirmed?
I don’t really like Shazam’s trailer. Probably not gonna watch it
The way the camera moves through the scenes in this film are fantastic. I cant wait to see what they do in the sequel. James Wan rules!
The geographical awareness in the Sicily fight was magnificent!
It’s a shame the Academy jacked Aquaman for a VFX Oscar nomination!
Robin Karlsen True haha
This movie gets alot of hate by the industry for some reason its only 68 on rotten tomatoes but fans absolutely love it
Idk I loved the movie but I wouldn’t say the VFX were groundbreaking I often found it distracting but I would say it should be nominated for costume design (idk if it has been nominated I’m waiting to see it on tv)
Is there not still time to nominate it before they announce the final noms?
@@danielm7412 lol but black panther got nominated
C'mon Vanity Fair give some respect to James Wan's name and put it in the title
Please stay on for the sequel, James: the movie was engaging, action-packed, and fun!
Aquaman 2 2021!
As soon as James Wan was announced as director, I knew this film would be great
how many director DCEU needed to make a good DCEU movies ? only Wan

With the conjuring movies , Furious 7 and now aquman
James has proved himself as expert film maker
Jason wait... He made conjuring???? No way a dude that smiley face made them
@@abyssalzei552 not just conjuring but some earlier saw films too
You forgot Insidious man. He's good on makin horror movie before.
@@saveourearth4050 yes , that's why the trench were so good and scarry in the movie
Dude, he is also behind the first Saw movie, which had one of the best twists I've seen.
I would literally watch a 10 hour movie about the behind the scenes about Aquaman, ALSO I WANNA KNOW HOW THEY MADE THEIR HAIR FLOWING UNDERWATER LOOK SO REALISTIC
I want to know that too!!
I wonder how many people actually realize that he's the director of The Conjuring series, Furious 7 (the only F&F movie that I didn't forget immediately after), Annabelle and a lot more. He's a genius of a director and deserves to be well-known.
He didn't direct Annabelle. He was one of the producers.
tbh Saw jumpstarted his career
This scene was dope. Black Manta was giving him the business.
Please break down the trench scene hands down it was scary af!
That was not scary at all.
It was glorious.
Also the last shot of the movie was orgasmic.
They used real costumes with stunt actors and put cgi on top
TitanPlay's 17 everyone have a different view on things
When the Trench was standing behind Mera I actually jumped out of my chair
I love James Wan because of his enthusiastic fan boy type personality that he has.
This movie deserves a oscar win for vfx.
Aruroxs007 I agree
maybe next year
Tough fight against 1917.
It's an amazing movie. Everyone should watch it at the theatre. The action, cinematography, the story is all good. And the villain is so effective and there is a reason behind his villainy.
The whole sequence seems so fluid, like on continuous take. Amazing!
Thats is james wan's signature style one flow shot sequences.
I can listen James' voice for hours. His accent is so soothing.
That’s not an Asian accent. I know an Asian accent when I hear it. Dude sounds... British and Australian lol i don’t know. 😂
Punk Paine He’s Australian.
@@Loxer150 He's Malaysian, but he grew up in Australia (I'm 90% sure on that). Sorry if I sound rude.
Marc Tang Yeah but his nationality is Australian and he also has the accent.
@@Loxer150 True.
The only thing I learnt is that directors need more credit and are TALENTED .
*Some directors. Having to sit through interviews of Rian Johnson and J. J. Abrams during production, especially in the presence of Kathleen Kennedy, and having to appease her tokenism ideals made me churn inside out. She has now made it even harder for legitimately skilled women to prove themselves as producers/directors in the industry, without her stain attached to them.
At least it made it obvious why some movies are popular and why some are a producer/directors personal million dollar twisted fantasy.
James Wan is the saviour of the DCEU.
Spike Spiegel he also advised marvel on blade but no response came
He is no saviour. He is salvation itself.
@@shanksingh7613 he should advise them on how to give a great action sequences
ItzNatasha_ Playz did you see winter soldier?
I've seen it twice in IMAX. I recommend you guys enjoy the same, it's like you're in the aquarium itself. Love the photography, the action sequences, the score. Just enjoy it
mah man
I brought my ticket to see the movie however Aquaman doesn't open here until Boxing Day 26th December super excited to see the movie
True, in the opening sequence with the submarine, when they showed the dark ocean, I was low-key spooked. It felt like I was in the dark and deep ocean.
The low amount of cuts during action scenes was one of my favorite aspects of the movie, it helped it standout against the billion other hero movies that do like a dozen cuts per second.
This is really interesting and really helps me as I wish to become a movie director in the future James Wan is great 👍
Wish u luck
Fabian Ellis I wish you all the best in your future I really hope your dream of becoming a movie director happens for you
Love the movie so much, thank you James Wan!
I had no doubt that James Wan was gonna nail this movie. Especially the action sequences. After seeing Fast 7, I knew he was gonna do a TERRIFIC job of executing the action scenes. The visuals are just so beautiful as well. And the story was a great start for Aquaman. I loved the overall movie, personally. If it weren't for Wan, I'm not sure if this movie would've been as great and as successful as it is. So I'm glad he's directing the next installment of Aquaman.
Props to the director, the cinematographer, the cameramen, the stunt doubles, the sfx artists, the vfx artists, and the actors for pulling this movie off.
Finally DC in safe hands.
For now..
@@thecreator4333 It is man, trust the directors. Shazam and The new Joker starting Joaquin Pheonix both look very promising. Birds of Prey has an amazing cast and it will be rated r with dark humour. And Wonder Woman 84' is directed by the same director of Wonder Woman (2017). Looks like things are looking pretty good for DC/Warner Bros.
It’s almost as if when WB keeps their ignorant greedy little hands outside of the films and let these highly competent artists do their thing, it gets results...
Not really. He isn't interested in getting involved with the rest of DCEU. He's be down to do Aquaman 2 though.
@L True

HOLY CRAP!
The first good videogame movie would finally be here.
I see uncharted, especially with the bell (and the lost-magical-artefact-searching stuff)
Aquaman was such a delight and fun - a pity the people around me couldn’t get into it. James Wan & Co. deserve making more epic movies like this.
James just seems like such an uplifting positive guy
Masterpiece by the master Wan
Max Müller it was the worst movie I have ever watched
Tom nascimento vassao Why?
Wasn't interested in seeing this movie at all, but this action sequence change my mind. Looks awesome.
Daniel Larsson this move absolutely sucked
Tom nascimento vassao no it didn’t
Tom's right. It's a 90 hour long pointless and predictable video game cut scene.
Harold thank you! Someone has actually seen the movie
@@tomnascimentovassao7400 they made it cheesy and cringey on purpose
Never seen a director explains his shots in this detail. He must be very proud of these shots.
I've been saying for ages now that James Wan should direct a Mortal Kombat film. He would absolutely kill it considering the fact that he did such an amazing job on Aquaman. Especially the visuals and action sequences. He'd be a perfect director to direct a MK film.
The mix between practical and CGI blends really well in this shot.
Black Panther tried to do the same thing during the casino fight, but failed to deliver. The cuts were too obvious.
@@vsingh8078, um, yes, you can. Both scenes are meant to be one-shot and cut back and fourth between different characters. In fact, the scene in Aquaman was much more complicated to execute, because it was shot both on the inside and the outside.
@@vsingh8078 No, he can critique it and point out it's flaws and I agree. Black Panthers scene was not smooth at all and lackluster delivery at best.
BP getting nominated for VFX over Aquaman is a disgrace.
@@bigmastermind1 Aquaman came out after the Oscars for VFX got selected.
@@amy_yoshikawa nope. Mary poppins and another unreleased film are on the list.
If you guys notice, his way of directing is very similar to that of Jackie Chan's , no cuts during an action scene. It engages the audience way way more.
Matthew So cool. I love fewer cuts during the action.
The one shot scenes in this movie were freaking awesome
But am I the only one who thinks sound mixing in this movie deserves an academy award?
Not sure who should I give this credit to but the cinematography is amazing. Both James Wan and the cinematographer did an amazing job
I love you James wan! Aquaman was amazing!!! So happy you made it!!!
James Wan is always showing his perfection in all types of movies ( horror, Action etc..) .. He is a solid person...
Waw, this guy is the real deal. I could listen to him describing his action sequences for hours. I am glad that DC got a solo movie right one more time. I can bury the Justice League properly now. The world is ready for new heroes and Aquaman delivers. Way to go. I probably won't go see it in theaters but looks like it is going to have insane ratings at the end.
I saw Aquaman, and honestly it deserves way more than a 64%.
deserves 80%
Not really, it's bad.
LG1201 unpopular opinion
I just watched Aquaman and I thank you i can't wait to watch it again till I go broke. It was amazing, magnificent, awesome, legendary, worthy, phenomenal and unique. And James thank you for giving us this amazing Christmas gift. Merry Christmas to all of us (DC fans specialy). 😚
Seriously, I was saying 'wow, who is the director' while I was watching this movie yesterday!! Amazing!!!
Wan seems such a sweet and humble guy, a truly masterful diretor
My biggest compliments for the movie were amazing cinemetography, beautiful costume design, essentially flawless CGI unlike justice league and perfect fight choreography with great one shots that dont have jump cuts that are nauseating. THANK YOU JAMES!!!
Most mind-blowing breakdown ever. The integration of practical and visual effects is...!
Honestly, thank you Mr Wan for not giving us a shaky cam high frame rate quick cuts fight scenes. People who have seen the movie know what I am talking about. NO SPOILERS but the whole movie and especially the third act has probably the most beautiful epic scenes I have ever seen.
I need director's commentary on the whole movie when it comes out on the Bluray. Would be amazing to listen to how each "experience" was crafted :-)
Its amazing how you can hear his english/Australian accent as well as the southeastern asia accent
Omg this made me appreciate and love the film even more! The action, world, special effects, and art direction were all amazing. The actors fit their roles perfectly but they do need to improve the script a bit more, that’s all.
This is what we need more of, a director who proudly uses both visual effects and practical effects.
literally my favorite scene in the movie
Edit: trench dive too
Mine was octopus playing drums. So childish that it's funny. The movie is so self-aware. It knows what it's doing and it delivers it beautifully.
Was better don't in Tintin
this has to be the first action movie i've seen with the most dynamic and smooth camera movements and usage along with special effects! truly amazing and visually stunning. james wan never fails! love this man!
My Man james wan just saved the entire DCEU hahaha
@Bagas TV I guess you forgot a movie called wonderwoman
James Wan is one of the best action directors and he knows how to use CGI just right
This is the first time im actually seeing James Wan and he is TINY and ADORABLE
I don’t know much about camerawork but I found it really cool when the camera seemed like it was floating and the scene would do a 360 spin underneath the water. It was simple and subtle but it made it feel like someone was legit down there in the ocean filming a documentary
I do believe that this movie has been well received due to James Wan directing it. I have seen it twice so far (2D and 3D). This chase part is one of my favorite action sequences of this movie.
This movie was pretty good. I just don't understand how it doesn't get any nomination for VFX or any visual cinematography awards this year..
Because it came out right at the end of the year?
@@elin111 Marwen and Poppins returns released at the same time with aquaman, but still got nominated tho..
At 7:00 he talks about how using practical effects primarily makes the scene look better. Just thank you understanding this lol
This really just shows why there should be an Oscar for stunt acting and co-ordinating
*This movie deserve an oscar!*
Watching James Wan since Saw 1.. Im so proud of him 😭😊😊😊
The last act of Aquaman is totally insane. They didn't hold anything back, It was crazy!!
Totally. Just when you thought you have seen the craziest.....the ocean floor starts exploding and out comes...
Love Mera's wardrobe in this scene, it just flows so beautifully when she's running along with her hair as well
James wan is my favourite director
I'm my own favorite director is my favorite
This movie shocked me with how amazing it was! Had me smiling the whole time! I really connected with the emotional weight of each character. Amazing stuff
This was actually my favorite superhero movie of the year. It might not be objectively the best but it is my favorite.
Honestly, hands down this has to be one of the best action/chase scenes ever filmed. I can rewatch this scene over and over and never get bored. Superb cinematography skill indeed :)
Well shot, well directed. Aquaman was very enjoyable to watch.
This is only the top of a VERY LARGE iceberg. Go and watch Aquaman! the action, visuals, spectacle and vision is nothing short of awe inspiring and the characters fully realized people especially the villains.
Great director! All hail James Wan!
Hes honestly one of my favorite directors when it comes to fun movies (and just in general). His films nowadays are usually pretty campy but never in the realm of so bad they’re good. They know what they are and they revel in it. He’s also the KING of dynamic action scenes.
Aquaman has ready made 13.7 million dollars already in previews!
It's been released in China...that's why
Rhys Cropper no it’s made 150 million in China already, it made 13.7 million last week during early screenings for amazon prime members
Even better
@@RhysCropper that's different. It's made 190mil in china alone and something like 330 mil in the rest of the world other than US
Don't be excited they won't be giving you a single.penny
James needs to do more action movies outside of the superhero genre. He has a real eye for it and his style fits it so perfectly
This is so good. I need that with the Atlantis scenes especially the chase sequence when they escaping the Atlantis army.
Better save those pennies for the Blu Ray release then friend
James put Laser Sharks, Talking Crabs and Drum Octopus in this movie and I still love it!
Jason was born the play Aquaman
Was he?
Nah he’s a horrible Aquaman
He studied marine biology and spent half of his life in Hawai, being close to the oceans.
Not really he doesn’t suit this character at all. Doesn’t feel like Aquaman at all
That’s not an opinion. He objectively doesn’t feel like the character. He’s Aquaman in name only
I love people who can appreciate the smaller details in life. That's why I love these types of videos on this channel
I saw the movie it was great and so beautyfull!!! But i don't know why it has a 64% at rotten tomatoes and isn't in the list to get an vfx award🙁so unfair
Chris !!! Because most of the critics are marvel fans and don’t want Marvel to have any legitimate competition. Subscribe to a channel called Film Gob and watch a video he did where he showed Collider reviewing Ant-Man and The Wasp and Aquaman and how there were literally similar things in both movies but the Collider people “didn’t like” them in Aquaman but “loved” them in Ant-Man and The Wasp. Sometimes they just make it so obvious.
I understand if Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad weren’t for everyone and if Justice League felt like two movies melted into one (because it was)... but Man Of Steel, Wonder Woman and now Aquaman are DC’s best films and all for different reasons.
Money.
Put Marvel’s name next to Aquaman and I bet you it would be at 90% rotten tomatoes or over.
I heard that the critics were paid by Disney to make bad reviews to non-disney movies
This breakdown is so appreciated. Absolutely brilliant sequence in this film. Kudos to the entire team that brought it to life.
