He says “it’s not ideal, but it’s all I have room for, so I make it work”. That’s the point in which that saying really kicked in, it’s in the craft-person, not the tool.

1:40 Not to mention when you're shopping for a whatever new tool, you generally don't quite understand exactly what certain specs translate to in real life, or what features are important for your application. After learning on the cheapo kit, you know pretty darn well exactly what you're looking for in your next workhorse tool.

If you're looking for a much better manual lathe with a similar footprint (rather than getting a large, free standing machine), I cannot over-recommend getting an old South Bend Model A, B, or C. They can be found for only a bit more than a new chinesium eBay lathe, and they're about the same size (9in), but the quality is *massively* better.
Unlike any current-production lathe in that size range, South Bend lathes were designed to be used in professional tool rooms, highschool shop classes, or in production making small parts. They're industrial-grade machine tools which happen to be quite small, rather than low cost tools made for hobbyists.
There are a ton of parts still available for them as well, and a number of upgrades you can make to bring them up to modern standards. I have a Model C which was made in 1936, and I updated it with a serpentine belt, a quick change tool post, modern carbide tooling, and a DRO.
Seriously, don't be put off by the fact that a good chunk of them were made before WWII. They absolutely slap, and they'll machine circles around any 9in lathe made today.

I am creating (3 levels of) makerspace checklist, and for that I need a lot of samples of different folks' setups... your personal shop itself would've been more than enough (rockets are made here, it's not as trivial as you make it sound like... you know), but add a industrial scale shop (glimpse of floor layout to workbench setups) and it's another level of awesome, because it's so hard to see any of those unless being invited to in-person & generally without camera. So, thanks a lot!
