Watched this as a 15yr old.....became a Mod the following weekend.....Parka, Target Tee Shirt, Lewis and Hush Puppies..and a trip to see the Purple Hearts..great times!
JSP came at this from a completely elitist and snobbish perspective, totally looking down on it as a plastic movement. the mod revival was totally valid, I still have my vinyl... the chords, purple hearts, secret affair, the crooks, the lambrettas - still sound great!
The Revival was strong from 1979-1984 but even in the National Scooter Rallies split you still had kids in Parka's in 1985/86 in northern places like Newcastle and Hartlepool but not a strong Scooter Boy presence.
I Agree re comments on Quadrophenia and the jam, I was more into the 60s mod than the 80s scene amongst numerous night's out two come to mind Vespa's under the arches at Charing cross and cheeky Pete's Richmond..
it was commercialised in the early 80s, the early revival mods became scooter boys until acid house was born.... a lot of what JSP spoke of was bollocks too many early revival mods went to RSG gigs or northen soul all nighters
Some Mod music was very similar to punk !! (if you rule out Ska and two tone beat ) .Just listen to the Jams early stuff !! It had a slight punk feel !!
As l remember it didn't last long, the mod revival ! l think it was largely over by the end of 1980 !! definitely gone by 1981 ( If my memory serves me right ?) Was There was a slight punk revival Adam and the Ants ,Toyah wilcox etc ?. Then the New Romantics appeared from no where?
The real mods at the time would have been the soul boys and casuals, as they were wearing the latest fashions and listening to the latest music. These so-called 'mods' were nothing more than 60s revivalists.
Janet Street-Porter had no clue. Watched the 3 clips to make the whole programme. The Jam was only mentioned right at the end. She said Mod would die out. Weller is still going after 40yrs!
i was 10 in 65 my sis was a modette had boyfreinds that were 60s mods i did buy a parker jacket with white fur round the collar along with the shirts hush puppys but 79 mods nahh it wasnt the same
It's a bit of a generalization " these young mods are mostly unemployed " ! Rubbish ! My elder brother was a mod around this time and was working in the meat industry !! Most of his mod mates were working as well !! he and they always had plenty of money to splash around !! Handmade suits just weren't the fashion and took too long to make .Off the peg was much better !

I remember watching this as an 8 year old in 79. I was fascinated by the whole Mod thing. And then later in 79 along came 2 Tone!
1979 Great time left school started work in the Post Office and Fantastic music
great stuff. brilliant kids. holds up against all the crap of the day... then and now.

Cool love all gr8 subculture s 4 ever😊😊😊
The jam never sold out lol ha ha ha.
I was a mod in the early 80s but used to have punk rocker rockabilly skinhead friends used to mix was fun
NICE! great rare live band footage....

Janet street porter always full of it….Mod never disappeared.
Couldn't stand her, always thought she was so "hip"
" the new Mods are mostly unemployed "...what a silly cow 🤣🤣🤣
tbf jobs were like rocking horse s,,, when i left school in 79
@@paulbarrett22 maybe but mods had money..how else do you get the scooter and the clothes and records.
Typical period Street Porter lazy dismissal and assassination in one. Very Daily Mail Janet.
:0/
great live chords footage during the closing credits

& in 88 ecstasy came along
🤣😂 indeed it did sir/Madame, it certainly did 🙌
@@glenndouglas8822 yep killed the casual movement for a good five years
would have been nice to see anything about the Two Tone bands because they were pretty mod and this was made in 1979...
Thankyou for posting this.
Have you got any more early (1979) Mod Revival stuff ??
I love Mods
after the mods came the casuals. They started roughly the same time but the casuals became more popular
That's when it all changed !!
As l remember it didn't last long, the mod revival ! l think it was largely over by the end of 1980 !! definitely gone by 1981 ( If my memory serves me right ?) Was There was a slight punk revival Adam and the Ants ,Toyah wilcox etc ?. Then the New Romantics appeared from no where?
new romantics were just the posh punk dying off
I don't why people are hating on JSP , thanks to this documentary , I m sure it turned on a few kids who took the Mod culture seriously
ALL subcultures require a uniform of sorts.
By the mid 80s, being a mod was hell. It had become a tarnished word...
Selling the product 😏🏴☠️
I went from a scooter skin to peaker 😷😂

I remember it well.

Mods rule, OK?
And then along came the Rude boys 😎

Mod is still going strong and gave life to many subcultures
Was that a teenage Nigel Farage?
Thought the same 😱
@droog1967 'Fraid not, sorry. But I'll post any more that I come across.
‘Start of Mod’ don't think so!
JSP, doesn't get it at all!! .. if it was down to her ,Mod would have died in the 60s!
THE MOD SQUAD.1968 .1974

Mod for it 😉
Always never liked bikers.
football fashion culture soon put paid to this fashion faux pas the music was pretty cool though
The Jam not sophisticated. Janet Street-Porter really being posh middle class didn't understand working class sub cultures!
